Duplicate iCal alarm messages

Since we started synching our machines with Mobile Me I'm now getting multiple alarm notifications from iCal. If I set an notification to email me a reminder about an event on one computer, I get a message from every computer that synchs to Mobile Me... even one from my wife's machine using her email address. We have four computers and an iPad synching to our Mobile Me account, so I get five notifications for every event. Not only that, I get iPhone alarms, possibly because the iPhone is synched with that calendar. So does my wife, and she doesn't want the alarm at all (neither did I want the one that woke me a 4 AM). Is there a way to tame this to get only one email and no iPhone beeps? There must be a simple fix. Either that or Apple has started hiring software designers from Microsoft.

I am having duplicate events on my calendar...EVERYTHING is duplicated.
Fortunately, I don't have alarms set for just everything on the calendar.
It occurs to me that Sync-ing means to do just that. It seems that iCal's definition of Sync-ing is to just just put everything from both devices,(my iPad and my desktop), into a single pile and call it a calendar. If each calendar has the same info, well....it just goes in there twice.
I can't find a "Report Bugs" option in the drop box, either.
As for alarms...can your wife select which calendar she receives alarms from in the settings?
I think that, as long as you have all of your devices synced, you'll get notifications from any device "attached" to your calendar. I think that's the purpose of syncing.
I mean, that is the point of having a sync, so you never miss anything you've placed on the calendar.
So I think that your issue is more about feeling TOO synced.... But I don't know how you'd stop the notifications, aside from turning off the sync on each device that you don't want to receive the info. I am not sure that you can be as selective with how the mobileme service sends your events to your devices so much as you may have to select how you receive those events to each device.
I guess maybe not sending alarms for 4am is a good choice if you don't want to be bugged by that?
Good luck, I am going to see if there is any other thread regarding the Events Multiplicity issue. I also get these VAST duplications of contacts in my contact list and I don't understand that one, either.

  • Duplicate ical alarms using external boot drive

I have an external firewire drive that I boot Leopard from. I carry it between home and work. At both home and at work I have similar, but not identical Mac Pro (Intel) desktop machines that stay put. In either location I can just boot from my external firewire drive and have all my OS environment and files with me. I've been doing this for months.
Every since I've set it up, though, I have had a problem with iCal alarms. If an iCal alarm goes off, say, while I'm using my external HDD at home, and I dismiss it, it never shows up again at home, even if I reboot. But if I then take the HDD into the office and boot from the external HDD there, all the alarms that went off and were cleared at home, show up all at once when I boot up at work. It also happens in reverse -- alarms cleared at work show up the next time upon boot at home. Note that I'm running from the same boot disk in both cases. I don't sync multiple calendars with .Mac.
This is particularly annoying because I have some automator ical scripts that are triggered once/day and if they run at home late at night, I don't want them running again when I boot up the next morning at work.
Anyone know a fix/workaround for this. I searched the iCal prefs, iCal help, this discussion list, and did a google search to no avail.

You can use the hardware, but will have to repartition and reinstall the OS from the disk shipped with the new Mac Mini.

If you create a disk image of the Lacie on your Mini, you can later use setup assistant to restore users and applications from that image.

  • Duplicate iCal Alarms On iPhone 3GS

All iCal alarms show up twice. I do not sync using MobileMe. Searching the forum hasn't brought up this particular problem... Any suggestions?

I know why it wasn't working. What you said did help, but there was a problem when I sync one back to another. No matter which one I set the alarm to go off for it is always off by one. If I set an alarm to go off 2 days before the event it changes it to one day before. If I want it to notify me two hours before it change to an hour before. Anyone know why it does this?

  • ICal Alarm Message Is Almost Off The Screen.

After a couple of years of having a weekly reminder message, I have recently started getting them 90% off the screen.
Although I drag them to the middle before closing them, the next one always appears 90% offscreen.
I did update to Tiger but I am sure I received "normal" ones at first.
    Any ideas?
    Ian.

  • HT2488 How do I create an iCal Alarm to delay send an e-mail in my Drafts folder of Mail?

I've learned how to use iCal Alarm to schedule sending an e-mail.  However, all of the instructions I read say that I have to type the e-mail inside the automator's "New Mail Message". Is there a way to type the message in Mail, save it in drafts, and then create an iCal Alarm to schedule sending it?
I got as far as "Get Specified Mail Items" --> "Display Mail Messages".  This sequence displayed a message in Drafts.  What next to get it to send that message it displayed?  I tried adding "Send Outgoing Message" to the sequence with no success.  And I tried adding "New Mail Message" --> "Send Outgoing Message" to the sequence with no success.
Sometimes there will be several e-mails I want to delay send (some that I started earlier in the day, saved in Drafts and finished up in the wee hours of the morning) and it seems a waste to have to create a new iCal Alarm for each.
    Thank you!

  • Mail not recieving ical alarms from gmail

the only emails that mail does not retrieve from my gmail account are ones that i have sent to myself from mail as well as email alarms sent from ical. would like to recieve the ical alarms! please help

    Nate,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
A peculiarity of POP access with Gmail, is that you cannot send, with the gmail account, a message to yourself, and then have it download.
A Gmail account is a bit odd in its behavior. It is primarily designed to be used with web access, but does allow POP access. The server assumes that for POP access you only need to see what you have NOT read, and further assumes that downloading is the same as have read a message, and the same with a message from yourself. Because of this, you will not download message sent from someone else, on but one computer, without some manual intervention.

  • Not receiving iCal alarm

My iCal alarms are being sent (I can see them in my sent folder in Mail), and they are showing up in my gmail account online. However, they aren't showing up in my inbox in Mail, and I'm not having trouble receiving any other emails.
    What could be the problem?
    Thanks.

  • ICal alarms aren't reliable

Since getting my new iMac (and even after upgrading to the new OS), my iCal alarms don't always go off. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for why this is or which events the alarms go off for and which events the alarms never happen for.
I have one alarm set to go off every day at 10:45 am. Until yesterday it was fine. Now it hasn't gone off for two days in a row. (This alarm was rock solid when I was using a G4. Then I got a new Mac, synced everything, and it worked fine for months afterward. Then, yesterday, all of a sudden, no alarm. Again this morning, no alarm.)
When I set my alarms and appointments for the upcoming week, again, some work, some don't. I've triple checked the settings and I don't think I'm doing anything wrong when setting the alarms.
I live by iCal and really need this fixed. Help!

My experience has been a little different. When I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard 10.5 email notifications of events I had scheduled in iCal ceased to work. (Alert messages to the screen with sound still happened.) Then the 10.5.1 update seemed to fix the emailing notification problem.
But for some reason, recently the email notifications have become unreliable again. I set up a test event yesterday and never got notified. Then today a regularly scheduled (recurring) event came due and it did send an email which seemed to trigger the missing email from yesterday as well.
And unlike the situation when running 10.5, sometimes the event will cause the Mail app to open but not send the email. In 10.5 the Mail app never responded in any fashion.
Later... Since writing the above I have read other threads on this and the following has some interesting thoughts:

  • ICal alarm to send email or open script

I know I can set iCal alarms to send myself an email. What I'd really like to do is:
    1) have an iCal alarm that prompted a script
    2) that would create an email message where I can fill out a template
    3) to send to a pre-addressed recipient to remind them of something that needs to be done.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help!

It looks as though the Mac application I was thinking of was AIM, which is still at version 4.7 from 2004 (and still available for download at aim.com). You simply entered a mobile phone number as the buddy and used the application's text messaging.
But I don't know whether it is scriptable.
There are web sites which provide the SMS send feature for free, and Safari is scriptable, but its a bit more of a task to script a web site that may change its display.
Of course, if his mobile has an email address, an email will work (mine is through O2 and has an address).

  • SMS Question - General and ICal alarms

I'm a newbie to SMS -- yes, believe it!
    A couple of questions:
    (1) Does it only work phone-to-phone or can you send someone a text message via computer. If so, how do you do that(i.e. my sprint was <[email protected]>. Is there a like address with ATT SMS?
    (2) I want to set up my ICal alarms to go to IPhone..how can I do that, or do I just use the calendar function? Do I just put in my phone number or do I need an e-mail SMS address as I mentioned above.
    Thanks!

  • How to keep ical alarms displayed after restarting

I notice that my iCal alarms disappear after quitting iCal or restarting my computer. For example "Call Doctor" shows up today at 8 am when I start work. I shut down for a meeting. I restart and the alarm message is gone. The event is still there. But I might forget to call unless I see the alarm again. I remember Microsoft Entourage did this and I found it very helpful. Is there a way to get this same effect with iCal?

Hi,  This is not related to your question about ical alarms, but to a previous post you made when your iweb crashed when saving.  I also had to use time machine to transfer all info to a new computer and I am having the same problem when I try to save.   I did not completely understand your solution because I am not very savvy with computers. I did go in and change all the permissions to read and write, but I still have the problem.  I don't know how to "add my account name to the File Info"-
I just spoke with a supervisor from Apple for two hours and who did not solve the problem.  (He thought he did, but he did not and he has not called me back).
If you could give me an explanation of your solution, it would be very helpful and immensely appreciated.
Thank you for any assistance you can give me regarding this.  I really need my iweb!
    [email protected]
Here is the solution you posted:
I figured it out. It was those permissions. I simply added my account name to the File Info. For some reason the Time Machine restoration did not copy the permission for the package (however the contents had the correct permissions.

  • Can I permanently keep  the iCal alarm dialog box where I want it on screen

I've switched to iCal completely after living with Entourage for years. What I liked about the MS Office Notifications is that they open in the same position where I last left it. However, the iCal alarm always opens in the center of the screen. What's really maddening is that if I drag the alarm to the position I want it (and leave it open even), the next alarm pops it back to the center of the screen. Arghh!
Positioning it followed by quitting and relaunching iCal doesn't work. Is there any way to keep it where I want it?

This happens sometimes... it is just a bug.
This message is probably coming from your HP update manager.
An explanation:  The Update manager is supposed to (of course) give you the option to download and install any available HP updates.  The lack of the buttons is a buggy bit that shows up in bad instructions - sometimes the result of old code, and sometimes the result of -- the buggy bits.
Try updating your HP Support Assistant
First, get rid of any older version:
Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features >
Scroll down, find, and Uninstall HP Support Assistant.
Restart your computer after uninstalling the existing version of Support Assistant.
Install the Latest Version of the Support Assistant
    HP Support Assistant
    ================================================================================
You can control WHEN update messages shows up,
AND whether it shows up at all.
After the Support Assistant is updated:
Call up (Open) HP Support Assistant > (Launch HP Support Assistant) >
    Tune-up > View Settings > View Notification Settings >
For example:  Set / CHECK "Taskbar Only"  >> to turn OFF popups...
So...Select as desired... > Apply > Close the Support Assistant
    ================================================================================
Another method to qauickly control HP Update:
Start > search / type "HP Update" > Click on HP Update to Open >
Settings > Adjust schedule as desired
    ================================================================================
    I hope this helps.
    Kind Regards,
    Dragon-Fur

  • Location of iCal alarm on screen

My iCal alarms all seem to be working properly except...they pop up almost entirely off the screen. When an alarm 'goes', I get the appropriate alarm sound, and the alarm message pops up...but I can only see the extreme left hand side of the alarm message (i.e. the rest of it is off the right side of the screen). I have to drag it back onto the screen to read it. That's fine...but I'm afraid that if my alarms don't pop up in the centre of the screen (or at least entirely on the screen) I'll not see it, and I'm going to miss whatever I'm being reminded about. Any way to make the messages pop-up in a different location?

  • Ical alarm keeps trying to open file from old location

I have an iCal alarm to open an accounts file each day.
I moved the file to another folder,
and selected the new location iniCal.
    It always gives me this:
Could not open file because 'Old/Path/to/File'  could not be found.
When I look at the alarm section in the iCal event, there is a list of files.
When I choose the file (with the same file name) in the NEW folder, this list of files doesnt seem to update.
Is there of forcing iCal to open my new file path?
or a way of taking the OLD file out of this list?
    Thank you for your help
    Frazer

I just found how to removed the old files from my list
    in the terminal I type:
    open library/preferences/com.apple.iCal.plist
and then delete the entries under PersistentMenu
Would still love to hear a more user friendly way to do this.
And a way to just get iCal to open the new file path, or how best to report this bug to apple
