Duplicate icons in Launchpad

Newly upgraded to Lion 2 days ago.
Launchpad shos 3 Pages icons, 3 Keynote icons and 2 Numbers icons.  None of the icons have delete buttons.   How can I get rid of the duplicates?
I can get the icons to 'wiggle', but there is nothing to delete them with.

Try using spotlight to find all instances of the app.
Delete all instances (even if there is only one) of the app.
Recover one instance from trash.
This worked just fine for me on my macbook pro using Lion.

  • Duplicate icons on launchpad screen

I have some duplicate icons on Launcher screen.   I can get them to 'wiggle' OK, but no 'x' appears alongside.   How do i delete them?

    you may try this
    1. go application folder delete the original application
    2. go launcher pad delete the icon
    3. install the application again.

  • When I migrated the contents of my iMac to my new MacBook Pro (both running Lion), I ended up with duplicate icons in the launchpad. How do I get rid of them?

When I used migration Assistant to transfer stuff from my iMac to my MacBook Pro, both running the latest update of Lion, I ended up with duplicate icons in the Launchpad. How do I correct this situation. Some can be deleted using the iPad method of holding down an icon until they all jiggle and then clicking the "X" to delete. However, most do not have x's appear next to them. Otherwise, the migration seemed to go okay.

Launchpad will display an icon for each copy of an application that is currently installed (as well as any aliases to those applications), so you will see more than one icon for an application if you have more than one version of the application installed or aliased. So did you create any aliases of these apps on your old computer? If so, delete them.

  • How do you remove an unwanted Steam icon from Launchpad?

I found an answer to this question online after some extensive searching. The answer isn't on the Support Forums, so I thought I'd post a link to the page (to credit the author) and copy / paste the wording below.
You don't have to download any dirty third party apps to do this...thanks to Joe!
    FORCE REMOVING ICOMS FROM LAUNCHPAD
    http://joegardiner.co.uk/removing-icons-from-launchpad/
The standard method for removing app icons from the Lion Launchpad is to hold the left mouse button [or old the Option / Alt key] over the app icon, wait for the cross to appear in the corner of the app icon, and then click it!
In some cases however app icons can become orphaned, for example if you use on Steam on Mac, deleting local content to uninstall a game will not remove the game icon from Launchpad. This leaves you with an unusable orphaned icon that seems invincible and does not appear in the Application folder along with the rest of your apps.
    The solution is as follows…
    1. Open Launchpad, find the offending icon(s) and drag them to your normal dock.
    2. Right click on the icon that you dragged to your dock and choose ‘Show in Finder’.
    3. Now drag the icon(s) from the Finder windows that opens up into the Trash.
    4. Finally right click on the dock item(s) that you dragged originally and choose ‘Remove from dock’.
Voila, the icons have disappeared from Launchpad and the annoying orphaned icons that seemed invincible have been thwarted.

Maybe this is an issue I should consult my ISP about??
No question about that. If you can "see" Travis's device, then he can likely "see" your Time Capsule.
I'm just concerned that whomever the APExpress belongs to could be changing settings on my computer or Time Capsule that would cause the issues with me not being able to backup.
Make sure that you have a Time Capsule base station password. Unless a user has that password, they might be able to "see" your Time Capsule, but they cannot access any of the data on the Time Capsule or change the settings.
Open AirPort Utility, click on the Time Capsule and click Manual Setup
Then, click the Time Capsule tab below the icons to see the device name and password for your device. Make sure that you have entered the password and confirmed. Click Update if you have made any changes.
The message I get is "The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk.  The problem may be temporary.  Try again later to back up.  If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
I am not sure what this error means, because I cannot duplicate it here to test.
If it were me, I would try this "fix".

  • Why do I have duplicate icons of Safari after Lion install?

I recently installed Lion and later found out that Safar, DVD Player, Photobooth, and Preview all have duplicate icons. One seems to be the older version while the other is the newer version with the new Full screen feature. Just to note, all those apps were in folders before I installed Lion but now I can't even take them out of the folder. I says I can't modify or delete them since OSX needs them. what do I do?

I had the same problem.  Then I went into my applications folder and found older versions for the same app; i.e. Pages and Keynote.  Once I deleted the older versions, (this does not delete anything you created from them since they would transfer to the most recent version) I went into Launchpad and saw that the old icon's were gone.  Pretty simple procedure.

  • Duplicate items in launchpad?

Upon starting with Lion, I noticed that the Launchpad has duplicates of some applications, such as iChat, DVD player, and FaceTime, to name a few. I want to remove the duplicate icons, but when I go to Library/Application Support there is no folder for the Dock or Launchpad so I can delete the database file and force Launchpad to refresh. Does anyone have any tips?

This could help, I have used it and it works great!

  • Duplicate Icons in launch Pad

In Launch Pad - on my iMac 24 - I have duplicate icons for Bluetooth File Share, Activity monitor, Airport utility and others. How do I get rid of the duplicates? They do not go to the trash.  This is not happening on my MacBookAir.

I had a look too and couldn't find anything so started a wider internet search and there is apparently a way of resetting the launchpad, which from reading is closely related to the Dock.
I have pasted the link below but cannot verify it is a safe workaround because I have not got the necessary understanding of Terminal to execute it...

I came to the page above through:

  • Since updating to iMovie '11, I have two iMovie icons in launchpad

I update from iMovie 10 to iMovie '11 today. Since the update, I now have two iMove icons oin Launchpad - one one the first page and one on the second page.
    This isn't a life-and-death matter, but doesn't seem right.
Any thoughts about how to sort it?

I also have this duplicated iMovie icon since upgrading. Anyone know how to get rid of it please? I have tried the old click and hold technique to bring up the cross, but i dont want to delete the app, just the duplicate icon (both icons are linked to iMovie 11).

  • Why do I have duplicate Apps in Launchpad

I just installed Lion this morning and really like the interface. It is really nice.
I have duplicate icons for things like Address Book, App Store, Calculator, iCal, etc.
Is there a way to remove the duplicates?

They may be different versions of the same app. Click on each and make sure that you keep the most up-to-date version.  You can remove the older versions by clicking and holding on an icon, they will all shake and have a big X in the upper right hand corner, clicking on the X will remove the app, both from Launchpad and your app folder.

  • Apps to Install and Uninstall Icons from Launchpad

I have found an application by a third party that installs in the System Preference file that allows you to Add or Delete any Icon from Launchpad with just a click.
I have installed the program and it works very good - no problems.
I also run NORTON Internet Security 5 for MAC and the program went though the filters and checks with NO problems.
Below is the link that takes you to the developer and download sight by a developer named Chaosspace.de
    http://chaosspace.de/launchpad-control/
Good luck and I hope this help everyone, this problem is very frustrating!

Why?  In general this type of setup is handled by using standard Windows authentication.  Normal users cannot install/uninstall programs.  The problem solves itself.  You cannot technically prevent an admin from removing a program.
It simply isn't possible.  As an admin I can remove the folder containing your program and it is effectively uninstalled.  I can manually remove any registry entries you create and it is uninstalled.  I can basically manually uninstall anything
that you install as an admin.

  • Missing icons i Launchpad - apps don't work

    Hello,
Yesterday i discovered that i am missing alot of my icons in Launchpad:
When i open any of the apps that doesn't have an icon, it launches, but i can't do anything. It won't open any documents in PDF-viewer and iBooks instantly stops working. It happened after i upgraded to Mavericks, if it has any relevans. I've looked at several forums, and it seems that I am not the only one with this problem. However, most people fix this by deleting a certain file and using a command in Terminal, but the app isn't working becauase of this problem.. I can open the Terminal, but there's no option for typing in commands.
I hope someone can help me with this problem.
    Thank you in advance.

    HI appleuser1993,
I don't know if this will help you but I experienced something similar to your issue. I had also many icons missed in the LaunchePad, it was after a clen with Clean my Mac wich did its job perhaps in a excess of zeal.
I had to go to App in the Finder and copy all apps to the LaunchePad and then, my Apps icons are back again.

  • How do I delete duplicate icons from the dock of an Imac 8.1?

How do I delete duplicate icons from the dock of an Imac 8.1?

No dragging to trash doesn't work. Just keep dragging them off. If they are stacked, which shouldn't happen, then when you delete one the other is still there.
Just how did you get duplicates? Did you put them there? If not then you have other problems and I'm not sure how to correct it.

  • Blurry/Pixelated Icon on Launchpad - How to Fix?

I, recently, upgraded my Evernote application to the newest version (5.0.0) and, then, noticed that the application icon was pixelated in, both, the Dock and the Launchpad.  I did a "get info" on the application and the preview showed the same, low-res, icon.
I reinstalled the application.  No change.  I rebooted my computer.  Now, the dock icon looks fine.  The preview in "get info" is, also, crystal clear.  I looked at the application switcher (command-tab) with the application open.  Again, nice looking high-res icon.
The Launchpad, however, is still showing the ugly, pixelated icon.
The only other fix I tried was resetting the PRAM (command-option-P-R).  Still, the Launchpad icon looks ugly.
What else can I try?  The high-res icon is, obviously, there in the app, but it's refusing to display properly on the Launchpad.
My MacBook specs are below.  Thanks.

I managed to fix it.  I deleted the icon from Launchpad using command-option-control and clicking the "X" on the icon.  I dragged the application back into Launchpad.  The icon is, now, displaying at the correct resolution.
