Duplicate iTunes database files in Home Folder

Due to an ever-increasing number of songs in iTunes, I downloaded them to an external hard drive -relatively easily(with a lot of help) and successfully for the most part. But....
In order to trash my iTunes Music on the internal drive I had to re-organize the sub-files found in the iTunes file(path - Home>Music>iTunes>). All of the iTunes database files were in the iTunes Music file so I dragged them out and put them in the iTunes file. After I trashed all the music, by highlighting the songs and dragging them to the trash bin, the iTunes Music file(which should be empty) has ‘re-created’ the iTunes database files.
The iTunes seems to work fine. All newly added music is stored on the external hard drive and downloads to my iPod. However now my iTunes window crashes consistently and my external hard drive gets disconnected intermittently.
What should I do about the duplicate iTunes database files and is this duplication causing these new problems?

I would happily assign to you 100 points even now
LOL - just clicked 'Solved' on one of my replies when or if you are happy!
Is it possible that when you create a new library the database files also get duplicated
Well, almost. When you create a new Library, you are creating a new iTunes "window" into which you can import any of your music, irrespective of whether it also exists in another library. So, although the music may be the same, iTunes creates a NEW (not duplicate) set of iTunes Library database files for your new Library. The main one (iTunes Library) holds all your playlists, ratings, etc.
That explains why those new files you found inside your iTunes Music folder were all much smaller than the 4 files you moved out - they were new iTunes Library files. (that's what I meant in paragraph 2; the file sizes of the new set were all wrong - way too small; the set you moved out of the iTunes Music folder, were much more realistically bigger.
However, it may be that the CURRENT set of iTunes Library files is on the eHD with your iTunes Music folder, from what you say. Does the iTunes Library file on the eHD have a very recent timestamp on it? If so, that's the one iTunes seems to be using.
Following your directions in paragraph 3 I couldn't find the main iTunes Preferences .plist file
I'm now inclined to believe that your Preferences are not the problem, though I'm baffled as to how you couldn't find the file. The com.apple.iTunes.plist file MUST be there, I'm not sure how iTunes can run without it. And if it wasn't there, iTunes would create it anew when you run the program. You sure you looked in ~user/Library/Preferences ?
then download iTunes from the Apple site
The problems you describe are from a "wrong way of doing things" rather than a corrupt application, so I'd say no to this, right now.
Could I delete or trash parts or all of the iTunes folders and files somewhere along the path, such as after User/Music and on the external hard drive, without jeopardizing the music located on the external hard drive
{sharp intake of breath} - this is ONLY worth doing once we know which is the Library that iTunes is currently using. Certainly, we haven't got to the bottom of why iTunes re-creates those iTunes Library files in your iTunes Music folder.
One way to track down the current Library file is to add one track only to your iTunes, then quit iTunes. Now, drag each of the "iTunes Music Library.xml" onto TextEdit and then do a TextEdit "Find" for that track name. The .xml file that has that track in it, is part of the set currently being used by iTunes and you should note down where that set is.
Will hear from you again, I'm sure.

  • Lost Music with upgrade 9.2 - Found iTunes Database File???

When I upgraded to 9.2 itunes, I lost all the music I had downloaded from CD's. I found the itunes database file dated October 2007 in the Previous iTunes Library Folder. How do I get that music back on the itunes library dated August 2010 which was the date of the upgrade?? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Are you saying there wasn't an ITL file with a more recent date? There should be one from the date you upgraded to 9.2 if it is on the same PC and same windows userID.

  • ITunes database file question

Starting up the computer I opened iTunes immediately. A box came up-- something about searching for the library, or so I interpreted it. I realized the external hard drive, housing the library, had yet to mount, so I hit cancel.
iTunes opened up anyway, and it was as if it was opening for the first time ever. All settings gone, all playlists gone, no songs present.
Quitting, restarting, etc. did nothing. I eventually used 'add to library' to add all the music back, but still the settings and playlists are gone.
I imported the library xml file, but that file was dated a year earlier when the hard drive library was created. It restored playlists from a year ago, but no info such as times played, date last played, etc., all still blank.
An alleged genius at the apple store said I had to import the iTunes database file, and that would do it, but that file, so says iTunes, may not be imported.
So. Any idea how to restore iTunes to what it was before? To get back my playlists and all the individual song info?

I don't know what you have done since this has happened but all you should have to do is open itunes while holding down the option key. Select Choose library, and point itunes to your itunes library.

  • HT3275 How do I find/restore files from items in secure home folder? How do I find/restore files that crashed when in finder of secure (File Vault) home folder?

How do I find/restore files from items in secure (File Vault) home folder? How do I find/restore files that crashed when in finder of secure (File Vault) home folder?  When I go into Time Machine, I see earlier dates but can't see files in my User File. I have File Vault turned on and see my home folder as a sparsebundle.  Do I neede to restore this in order to see files in my home folder.  When I click on it to restore it gives me an estimated time of over 2 hours.  Also tried to restore an Excel file I was working on when computer hung, so lost it without saving or naming it.  Does it exist anyplace and can I restore it?

Thanks. I had pretty much figured out from other posts that I had better turn off File Vault for my home folder and use a disk utility sparse bundel for little information I wanted to secure. The information about File Vault 2 in Lion was new and useful though.

  • Time machine no longer backs up changes to files in home folder.

My Time Machine seems to be in some sort of weird state where it has stopped backing up any files/folders in my home (~/) folder or below.
This is obviously a big issue since those are the files most needing to be backed up.
It does catch changes to the /Applications folder, the /Developer folder, and the /usr folder, for some examples.
A typical backup where it misses a lot of changes in my home folder is as follows:
Starting standard backup Backing up to: /Volumes/My Backup Disk/Backups.backupdb No pre-backup thinning needed: 1.22 GB requested (including padding), 253.01 GB available Copied 20 files (157 bytes) from volume . Starting post-backup thinning Deleted backup /Volumes/My Backup Disk/Backups.backupdb/My Computer Name /2009-09-11-185523: 253.01 GB now available Deleted backup /Volumes/My Backup Disk/Backups.backupdb/My Computer Name /2009-09-07-124935: 253.05 GB now available Deleted backup /Volumes/My Backup Disk/Backups.backupdb/My Computer Name /2009-10-03-205432: 253.05 GB now available Deleted backup /Volumes/My Backup Disk/Backups.backupdb/My Computer Name /2009-10-03-205215: 253.05 GB now available Deleted backup /Volumes/My Backup Disk/Backups.backupdb/My Computer Name /2009-10-03-204044: 253.05 GB now available Post-back up thinning complete: 5 expired backups removed Backup completed successfully.
And looking at it in TimeTracker it just shows a lot of 0 byte backups, with the occasional backup with only changes to the above-mentioned folders visible.
How can I reset Time Machine and get it back on track?
I'd like to preserve the current backups on it if possible.

    Are you running File Vault?
Besides your TM disk, what's shown in the +Do not back up+ box in TM Preferences > Options?
If nothing there would prevent your home folder from being backed-up, try a "full reset" per #A4 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.

  • Mysterious file in home folder

This may not be a problem, but it would be good to make sure. There is a strange file in my home folder called "Opera 7 preferences.new". Does anyone know what the function of a file with that extension ".new" is? I'd appreciate any feedback, thank you.

    Hi,
I did a quick search on Google, and it seems that it might be related to installing software, like perhaps the Flash Player 8. Opera is a browser, and it seems that some software companies are licensing it for their online help systems...

  • JavaPlugin2_NPAPI alias file in home folder ?? What for

Does anyone know why this file is in the home folder. It is a black arrow alias file. I right click to show original and nothing happens.
I think the original file is  gone, do you think I can safley delete the file.
    thanks

In Yahoo Answers, someone posted that it could be a sign of some type of malicious software
<sigh> someone's always eager to raise that specter, huh?
WebCT is a common educational software tool used by numerous schools and colleges to run courses over an internet connection. Did you, by any chance, enrolled in any school classes around the time this file appeared?
Of course, to some people, schools are malicious, but that doesn't mean to say this file is.

  • No configuration files in home folder.

    Hello,
I am installing x86_64 arch and using my /home folder from ubuntu, but not any of the configs from ubuntu. So i deleted my /home/haxit folder, and installed arch. Now, when i add my user, it adds the folder but not any configs in the /home/haxit folder that arch created. Is this normal?

My home folder now has .bashrc and .bash_profile. Is that all there is on a fresh install?
Well, a fresh (Core) install does not include X11 so obviously .xsession and .xinitrc do not exist in /etc/skel.  If you create your user after you have installed the xorg group then adduser will copy across the .xinit and .xsession files.  Alternatively you can copy these manually if you install xorg afer you have created your user.

  • Mobile Users - Sync Files Outside Home Folder?

    Hi folks,
    Regarding mobile user accounts...
On our server, we have a shared folder as follows:
    /Volumes/Server HD/Business/
I want to configure my Mobile User account to sync this folder, but I cannot because it does not reside in my Home folder.
Presumably I could just move the folder to within my Home folder and then recreate the share point from there. But then, a second user would not be able to sync this folder on their Mobile User account.
Is there a workaround to allow syncing outside the Home folder? I tried using a symlink but this didn't work...
    Thanks!!

Just modify the SHARE POINT setting of your BUSINESS folder. (SA>File Sharing > Share Points > List > Select your BUSINESS mount point folder)
Enable Automount > then tick Use as Home Folder and Group Folder
then go back to your users in WGM, assign the home folder to the newly mounted BUSINESS folder.
    hope this helps.

  • Tried to Copy Files Into Home Folder

I tried to drag all the folders into my Home Folder to clean things up. I copied my Pictures Folder, my Documents Folder, my Music Folder, my Movies Folder into the Home folder.
Is there some place to read about what should be where and how to start to clean up my duplications and alias's
I would like to thank you in advance for your help with this matter.

I am sorry for the confusion...I don't know the correct terminology.
I am calling the finder window the 'dock' and what is the dock I call the docking station.
You are correct. I copied everything into the home folder trying to clean up the finder window
So my trouble is with the Finder
(this is what I see in the first column of the finder window after the list of hard drives on my system)
    Desktop
    Home Folder (whg2000)
Documents (info says it is folder but wierd icon/logo - not a folder with a picture in it)
Applications (with the A logo icon not the folder Icon) (inside this folder is all my apps but also an alias of the applications folder but when I highlight this alias I have a duplicate of all the contents of the applications folder)
Library Folder (with the library logo icon on the folder)
Pictures (just a folder no active logo or icon on folder)
Music (just a folder no active logo or icon on folder)
Sites (just a folder no active logo or icon on folder)
Public (just a folder no active logo or icon on folder)
Movies (just a folder no active logo or icon on folder)
(and then if I click on the home folder this is what I have inside my home folder)
Bill-Work-Folder (folder where I keep all my stuff)
Burn Folder (with burn logo / icon)
    Desktop
Documents ( folder with the active logo icon....the contents of this folder match the contents of the documents folder on the dock)
    home certify.txt (not a folder)
Library Folder (with the library icon/logo)
(and then this is what is in my Trash folder which is in the bottom of the dock, I had dragged stuff into the trash in attempt to clean it up)
    Sites Folder
    Public Folder (withthe logo/icon)
Pictures Folder (just fodler no icon/logo)
Movies Folder (with movies logo /icon)
Music Folder (with music logo / icon)
I hope this can still be fixed and cleaned up, thank you

  • File vault home folder becomes ejectable after QuickTime update

I have two user personalities on my Mac - an administrator and a normal user.
The normal user has an encrypted home directory using FileVault.
I just installed Apple's 9/9/08 QuickTime update and the updater seems to have destroyed a few things. I ran the update from inside the user personality, typing in the admin password.
After the restart, my home folder is now ejectable. That was the first curious sign.
Also, no browser other than Safari works any more. I also have Camino and Firefox on this machine and both can no longer be started. This seems to be related to the QuickTime updater and I assume it is related to running the updater from a non-admin account...
So how do I get my system back to normal? It is very puzzling and potentially dangerous having the "eject" button next to your home directory....
    Michael

looks like you have a number of problems. the best would be to restore your system from a backup to a point before the update. if you don't have a backup you should first of all start backing up. no idea what's wrong with your browsers but for the filevault I would first restart and see if the problem remains. if it does I would try turning filevault off/on. You need quite a bit of free space to do it - at least as much as your home directory holds and then some.

  • File vault: home folder is not located in the usual place...

All of a sudden I get this error when logging into a filevault protected account.
*The home folder for "XXXX" is not located in the usual place or cannot be accessed*
The message goes on to warn me that the folder could have been moved or deleted or is on an unavailable network volume.
I see that the sparsebundle is right where it should be. I tried searching this board, but I can't find anything threads discussing this error. So, none of the data is accessible. If it was a sparseimage I could just mount it under another user and get the data out, but I have no idea what to do to salvage a sparsebundle. Heck, I didn't even know they existed until 30 min ago.

I have had no luck in fixing this. I've tried mounting the sparsebundle from the finder, disk utility, and the terminal and get an "Operation not supported on socket" error.
opening the terminal while logged in to this account brings up a message along the lines of
    no home directory in /Users/AccountName
Logging in with home = /
So I thought it may be a permissions problem and reset them to be read write for user group and others, but still can't login or mount the sparsebundle from another account.

  • Question about pictures file in home folder

I am trying to create more space on my hard drive and have a question about the pictures file.
In addition to the iPhoto Library I have several folders named 1, 2, 3 etc each containing a bunch of photos; plus several hundred individual photo files.
My question is whether these files are duplicates of what is in the iPhoto Library - and is there an easy way to find that out?
And I guess also to find out how they got there in the first place. Could these be imports from disks as opposed to my digital camera?
    Thanks for any help,
    Laura

    Hey laura,
I haven't used iPhoto for a while but from memory i think that i work similar to iTunes. Whne files are processed by iPhoto they are catalogued on the hard drive according to the iPhoto preferences. I would check out the iPhoto preferences and see if you can see anything in here that will tell you what is going on.

  • ITunes Library File in Documents Folder? Mac problem not Windows

    I am confused!
I have several very small iTunes Library folders in my Music/iTunes file which date back to iTunes 4. Some of the files are less than 10kb. I also have a folder titled Previous Libraries in my Music/iTunes file which has two Libraries which are 768kb and 2.6mb in size. My main library which is 10.3mb was in my Documents folder which seems strange. I have now moved it to my Music/iTunes folder which is where I think it should be.
I am trying to tidy up what appears to be a bit of a mess. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Copying script for itunes database files?

    Hi,
I stored my itunes music on another internal HD called Spitfire. The default storage folder for the itunes xml and library files is in my main internal HD /user/music/itunes folder ie. Master
i use superduper to backup Spitfire, but i would like to backup the 2 aforementioned files.
is there a script (I'm using panther latest version) to automatcially copy and paste the 2 files from Master to Spitfire?
    Cheers,
    keebler

    Try this:
    tell application "Finder"
repeat with this_item in items of folder "path:to:folder"
if modification date of this_item is greater than date "Sunday January 1, 2006 00:00:00" then
set the_alias to this_item as alias
    tell application "iTunes"
    add alias the_alias
    end tell
    end if
    end repeat
    end tell
The path to the folder in line 2 and the date in line 3 can be customized as needed. The path needs to be delimited by colons.
