Duplicate library?

Hello everyone:
As a new user to I-tunes, am I correct in saying that I-tunes duplicates all of my music files? i.e. If I have 500 songs in my D drive and then import them to I-tunes, it creates the same 500 songs in its library meaning my memory requirement just doubled?
Steve

By default on Windows, it just creates a pointer to those songs without copying them. This can be verified from the Advanced section of the iTunes preferences. Music imported from CDs is placed in the iTunes Music folder regardless of the setting.

  • Creating a duplicate library in a different audio format (MP3)

My iTunes library is in Apple Lossless format, but as that takes up a fair amount of storage space, I can't store as many songs as I'd like on my iPod. Therefore, I'd like to create a mirror library in MP3 format.
I'm trying to determine the easiest way to do that. The not-so-easy way seems to be to duplicate the entire library, then in the duplicate library, use the Advanced/Convert Selection to... command to convert to MP3, then delete all the Lossless songs from that library (doing the conversion in the original library and having two versions of every song would seem confusing when you want to play stuff). My library is currently stored on an external drive, which works fine.
Am I crazy, is there a more straightforward way to do this? Is it possible to export the actual song files while converting them at the same time?
    Thanks.

There is a way to sort your library by recording type. In the main iTunes window, right click (control/click) on the column headings, then select "Kind", then click on the Kind column to sort by recording type.
Still, wish somebody would answer our question!

  • Duplicate library within Aperture 3

I'm a novice user whose not gonna know all the relevant information the knowledgeable and helpful folks will need to thoroughly answer my question, but here's the best I can do.  Perhaps with specific questions, I'll be able to provide more information.
The problem:  Aperture contains two librarys:  (1) iphoto Library and (2) Project Library.  Project Library is larger and all projects and photos within the iphoto Library are duplicates of projects and photos within the Project Library.
Solution I'm working towards:  eliminate the duplicate iphoto Lilbrary.
Facts:  I do not know how Aperture was initially set up and how the iphoto Library was imported into Aperture, as hubby did that quite some time ago.  My masters are now referenced on an external drive.  My husband and I both tried to figure out how to properly do this and I just noticed that there were two duplicate folders on our external drive.  I effectively housed the masters in a folder on the external called "Aperture Masters."  I just attempted to send to trash the two duplicate folders:  one named "iphoto library" and the other named "TSP photos."  I left the folders in the trash and have not emptied them from the trash.
After I sent these duplicate folders from the external drive to the trash, I opened Aperture again, and the duplicate iphoto Library is still there.  However, the icon that shows that it's a referenced file now has a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark on it.  When I click "locate master," it shows me the external drive and the path to the photo I had selected in the iphoto library within Aperture is in red (indicating there's a problem with it).  I located the same photo within the Project Library and there is no yellow triangle with exclamation mark on it on the referenced icon and when I click locate master, I can do so without the path showing in red.
Question:  Is the final step simply to empty the Trash and then the duplicate library will be gone?  Is there anything else with which I need to be concerned to properly eliminate the duplicate library?
Thank you for your time in answering!

One thing to remember is that Aperture does not contain libraries. Aperture libraries are the places where your images are stored to be accessed by the Aperture application. You can have multiple libraries on your system at any one time but only one copy of Aperture the application.
So if I am understanding your situation: You have two Aperture libraries one named iPhoto and one named Project. The Project library contains everything that is in the Aperture library named iPhoto (bad choice of names BTW as it is easy to get confused with iPhoto itself) plus more.
The two libraries do not share any masters.
You now want to delete the Aperture library named iPhoto. You moved referenced masters that this library was referencing to the trash.
This is what I would do: Open the Project library, go to the Photos icon in the Library tab of the Inspector. Make sure the search box says Showing All, select all the images and open the filter HUD and filter for missing images like so:
If the browser is empty then all the images in this library are accounted for and you can empty the trash and delete the Aperture library named iPhoto. If anything shows up then you need to figure out what's going on before you delete anything.
    good lick.

  • Duplicate /library/ made by mistake

I need some help. My 70+ year old mom called in a panic, as it seems she has created a duplicate /library/ folder. Since this has happened she can log into her account (she has admin permissions), but can not connect to the internet, email or anything else. I am guessing that since there are two /library/ folders it can't locate items to run these. I am 200 miles away trying to troubleshoot for her. What can I do, short of reinstalling the OS? Any suggestions would be great.
Her system: iMac G5 intel, OS 10.4.11
    Appreciate your help in advance.

I need some help. My 70+ year old mom called in a panic, as it seems she has created a duplicate /library/ folder. Since this has happened she can log into her account (she has admin permissions), but can not connect to the internet, email or anything else.
you may have missed diagnosed the problem. Not being able to do e-mail is a symptom of a bad ~/Library because this is where Mac OS saves your mail.
What she mean by not being able to do Internet? I would think you could do Internet but no bookmarks.
Nor would your desktop look the same. Perhaps she is saying she cannot Find the internet browser. This would be a symptom of the a bad user library. It is possible for the user to rename their library folder. It is not possible for the administrator to rename the System Library folder from the GUI interface without some clever use of the getinfo command. Just because your administrator does not mean you can go and change system files without doing some administrator type things. The administrator does not own system files. The system owns system files.
Is so, there is /Library and ~/Library. Which one was change? ~/Library is the more likely. For example, /Users/mac/Library
you will note ~ means the current users directory path. For example. /Users/mac
There is a mistake with these commands.
The commands are missing a sudo and there is the matter of the /.
There is also the matter of two library folders. There is one library folder /Library and there is a another library folder in the user's account /Users/mac/Library. Which one are we talking about?
But my reading of the problem was that it was the user's Library account. If it was the system's library account that is another problem, which I was not addressing. I don't think the system would run at all if it was this one however.
And you need to make any changes to /Library from a single user mode.
You need to get into single use mode for steps one and two that are listed below.
This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.
    http://www.securemac.com/macosxsingleuser.php
Basically, you hold down the command-s key then powering on your machine. The command key has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar. On a PC keyboard, it will be the windows key, I think.
    1) You can change the password on an account. ( Do you know Unix. You are in a Unix single user console. ) The setup commands you need should be listed on the screen. For Mac OS 10.4.11, the commands are:
    # Type the follow two instructions to accessing the startup disk in read/write:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /
    pwd
    ls -lF L*
    mv -i Library Library_new
    mv -i "Library 1" Library
This commands are for a user account...
run these commands from an administrator account that is not the problem account.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    cd /var/root
    pwd
    sudo ls -lF L*
    sudo mv -i Library Library_new
sudo mv -i "Library 1" Library
It is a good that people are reviewing these commands. It is easy to make a mistake.
Than here is what these commands maybe:
    cd is change directory
pwd is a print working directory
    ls is list
    sudo is Super user do
    mv is move
for cryptic comments you can always uses the manual command which is man. for example:
    man mv

  • When I imported from IPhoto to Aperture did I create a duplicate library?

    Background:
I am new to Mac and all its applications having moved from a crashed PC and Picassa to an IMAC and Aperture. I got the machine in December of 2011 and all applicatiopns and the OS are up to date.
Apple store ported over all my files and the pics went to IPhoto. As soon as I got home with no knowledge and my brand new machine I downloaded Aperture.
I assume I was prompted by Aperture to import all my Iphotos but I don't remember how this was done. Since I am so ignorant about Macs I assume that I didn't do anything other than follow the prompts. My 1TB drive is almost full and I was surfing for solutions when I found a post about duplicate libraries.
    Questions:
1 Not knowing how I got to where I am, how do I determine if I have seperate Libraries? I assumed thet both IPhoto and Aperture shared the same Library but I think that is a wrong assumption.
2 What is the procedure for deleting the Iphoto Library if I do have a duplicate Library?
3 I have a gazillion pics in the trash due to multiple imports. I assumed that I was only moving pointers to the trash and that all these duplications were not true duplicates, I now think that this is a wrong assumption. If these are indeed duplicates then dumping trash will free up a lot of space ?
4 Is there any way to globally eliminate all duplicates?

    Blayne,
before you do any restructuring of your libraries, I would recommend to update your software (MacOS X, Aperture, and iPhoto) to the latest versions. Lauch the AppStore to see, if any updates are waiting. There have been some important bugfixes in the past month.
Also make sure you have a current and working backup of all your libraries.
assume I was prompted by Aperture to import all my Iphotos but I don't remember how this was done. Since I am so ignorant about Macs I assume that I didn't do anything other than follow the prompts.
There are essentially three different ways to import an iPhoto library to Aperture. It will depend on the Import settings you choose, where your images are stored:
When you import the iPhoto library using: " File > Import > iPhoto Library" you will see an Import Panel like this:
If you selected  Store Files "In the Aperture Library", then all your images from iPhoto are now duplicated in the Aperture Library package, and you can safely delete your iPhoto Library after backing it up.
If you selected  Store Files "In their current location", then the master image files of your Aperture images are still in their original location - in the iPhoto Library - and you must not delete the iPhoto Library.
If you selected  Store Files "Choose", and selected a folder, then your master image files are currently in some folder outside the Aperture library, but not in the iPhoto Library.
Since you do not remember, what your settings were, I think it would be the safest, to consolidate all your images into the Aperture library, whereever they are now. This will give you a tidy starting point for your future work. To consolidate:
Select the "Photos" View in the Library Inspector panel, and select all your images in the browser.
Then select "File > Consolidate Masters" from the main Aperture menu bar.
This will move all master image files into the Aperture library. Compare the size of your Aperture library before and after. Then you can delete the iPhoto library.
I have a gazillion pics in the trash due to multiple imports. I assumed that I was only moving pointers to the trash and that all these duplications were not true duplicates, I now think that this is a wrong assumption. If these are indeed duplicates then dumping trash will free up a lot of space ?
After consolidating you can empty the Aperture Trash. Thedisk space will only be freed, after you empty the trash on your Desktop as well.

  • Duplicate Library Items?

Hello.  I am VERY new to Flash, although I'm doing quite well on the project I'm having to learn it for.  So far I have been able to figure out what I need.  I have found a very nice tutorial site, but the gentlemen's videos are 20 minutes long (at least), and they are excellent, however I don't have time to go through all kinds tutorials.  I do do them when I can, but the projects I undertake need to be published with expediency and I just don't have time to go through step by step.  I've always been a "learn by doing" person, anyway.
My question is: (sorry if it's basic)
When I open the library, I went through and deleted some of the components that were mistakes. I am using a GIF that was converted to a SWF in one layer, and I noticed that in the library there are duplicate frames of this item.  One group are bitmaps and the others just say "graphic".  They are exact duplicates of each other except that the "graphic" items all have the little edit button on them (the little "bullet-like" circle).    When I imported my SWF, I did have to edit each frame to make it appear and fit on the screen the way I wanted it to.  Are these graphics the edited versions of what I've done?  I don't want to delete them if they're referenced to the original frame.  Obviously, I want to discard any unused library items so I can keep my file size down, but I don't want to delete them if they're supposed to be there (cuz I really don't want to have to do all that editing again if I mess it up). Or are they extras from perhaps I duplicated them accidentally somehow?
    Thanks for the help!
    ~Jessica

In the upper right corner of the Library window there is a contextual menu button. That will open a menu. In that menu, near the bottom are two options for showing the usage of each item in the Library. This will help you to know what is used in the timeline.
Those graphics objects are the representation of the bitmaps that were imported. You use the graphic. The graphic uses the bitmap. Don't delete either one. The size of the .fla file has no bearing on the size of the .swf file that you create. The .swf will only contain and use the items from the Library that it actually needs.
Cleaning up your Library is a good practice, but you don't need to obsess over it.

  • Duplicate images = duplicate library from restore?

I'm very confused. Because of issues in A3, I restored back to A2 and rebuilt, actually restored a couple of times, etc, then REMOVED (I thought) all of my libraries from A3 access so that I could do a clean A3 install and upgrade. (My A2 library was temporarily in the TRASH, and my current A3 library was relocated to a desktop folder, as suggested on another troublshooting thread here).
So, I opened up A3 after this install, and there were all my photos again, and some doubled. Where would A3 have accessed my photos from if they were in the trash and another folder? I was expecting to direct A3 to the folder myself on this "clean install. So now, I'm thinking my huge library is doubled up in here somewhere, and how do I find duplicates from my restores and delete them?

Might be better to start with the clean and empty library you intended to begin with. If you want to recover your library rather than reconstruct one, do you have a good Aperture Vault or backup you trust to do the recovery?
Not sure where Aperture is finding eveything by what you describe, however you might quit Aperture and search for all your current locations of the Aperture Library and rename each one to be more descriptive (at least temporarily). For example, rename various files as appropriate to make each unique, such as *Aperture 2 Library OLD*, *Aperture 3 Library OLD*, etc.
Within Aperture 3, you can create a new *Aperture 3 Library* using the File -> Switch to Library command. That panel will display all the Aperture libraries you have, but you may want to create a new empty library and them Import as appropriate.
Post if I’m not clearly stating this...

  • Duplicate library on iPad

I just synced my iPad today for the first time. As I was in the the iPod app I noticed that some of the libraries were duplicated. I have 4 copies of each library on the iPad. Its not a big deal but is there a way to fix this?

    zackmd1 wrote:
I have checked, they are copies of the same playlist. I've tried syncing with iTunes and changing the playlists that are syncing but it doesn't help. Like I said before it's not a real big deal but it would be nice to just have one of the same playlist.
Now I don't like you any more. I just checked my playlist, and I have random duplicates of about half of my songs. Well, I'll have to figure this out.

  • Duplicate library onto new laptop

I just bought a new laptop and want to duplicate my entire itunes library from my main PC, including playlists, onto the new laptop so I will have the same itunes on both. I will continue to sync my ipod with my PC itunes, so ipod being only able to sync with one itunes will not be an issue. My PC uses Windows XP and the new laptop uses Vista.

    Epaiteia wrote:
Copy how? Should I be messing about with networks or is there a simple way?
Assuming you use the iTunes default settings where iTunes copied added items to your iTunes folder and organizes your library (meaning - everything is all self contained in the iTunes folder), then all you have to do is drag & drop your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes Music folder you find inside the iTunes folder) to the external drive and copy the entire thing.
If you want to test that it worked or would like to actually start using it from that location instead, use these instructions when you start iTunes to point it to the new location...
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one

If you are just testing, then close iTunes after you verify it works, and restart iTunes again with the same instructions and point it back to your internal drive (original) location.
At this point you can either use the library directly off the external on your new laptop, or transfer the library off the external to your new computer and run it off the internal.

  • Deleting entire duplicate Library

I restored my Library from a Hard Disk crash. It copied each song- 1200 entries- twice. How do I delete all duplicates without deleting "one by one"? Thanks.

You can find a duplicate deleting script here:

Or if you prefer a comercial option something like iTsync

  • I merged Aperture libraries, Now I have a duplicate library!

I recently bought and 'am starting to work my way through "Aperture 3" Apple Pro Training Series, book.  In the course of attempting to merge the "sample" library with my already established Aperture Library, I now find that I have achieved this, but I also have 2 identical libraries, Projects, Pictures, Folders, everything, that appear when I open Aperture!  Is there a way to 'delete' one of these without doing damage to the other?  Thanks, Vic

I have one library with everything duplicated in it.
Then the merging did not recognize the original image files as duplicates. Apertures notion of duplicate is very limited - only files with everything identical (name, size, format) are considered to be duplicates.
There is no built-in feature to detect and remove duplicates. You will need to do it manually, and frankly, it might be easier to restore the previous version of your library (before you merged) from the backup and to start from there again.
But if you have invested to much additional work already, create a backup before you start deleting.
It is hard for me to give advice on what you can delete and what not, since I cannot know exactly, how you did merge the libraries and what you see as duplicates.
You cand delete projects, if you see a second project that contains similar images. Compare the resolutions of the images and the states of the edits, to be sure to keep the best versions with your recents edits, when you delete the duplicates. Be careful not to mistake images in an albums as duplicates of images in project. The gray icons in the library Inspector can easily be confused.

  • Merge Library Fails - Claims Duplicate Library

I am attempting to merge to Libraries. When I select the newer library as the file to import into the older Library I get an error message stating: The library could not be imported because it is a duplicate of the library currently running. When in fact they are not the same libraries. The names are different and there are altered images as well as new images.
I tried repairing both Libraries. Each Library are on different drives.

I'm having the same problem Michael reported (running Aperture 3.2.2 on 27" iMac with Lion 10.7.2 or Macbook Pro with Lion 10.7.2).
J.F.'s response looked hopeful although it was a bit vague on some details.
I tried various steps (see below), and nothing resolved the problem.
HAS ANYONE WITH THIS ISSUE FIGURED OUT A SOLUTION?
I had made a copy of my iMac aperture library to a mobile drive.
I then updated the iMac library and wanted to merge those changes back into the library copied onto the mobile drive. It doesn't work: on my iMac I get the error that the libraries are duplicates (NOT true!).
Building on J.F.'s info, I tried a few things in vain (starting with two originally-identical libraries: original iMac aperture library [modified after copying to mobile drive], and mobile aperture library that is a copy of the original iMac aperture library copied onto my mobile drive before I made some further mods to the iMac aperture library):
    * All on the iMac: option-click Aperture icon on iMac and select to create new (empty) library (on iMac hard drivez), then copy over DataModelVersion.plist from this new (empty) library into mobile library; open mobile library and merge into original iMac library: SAME ERROR
    * iMac+macbook pro #1: move mobile library drive to Macbook Pro and open there (even modified one image with an added caption), then moved mobile library drive back to iMac and open there and try to merge in original iMac library: SAME ERROR
    * iMac+macbook pro #2: option-click on Aperture icon on macbook pro and select to create new (empty) mobile library (on mobile drive!), then move mobile drive back to iMac and on iMac copy over DataModelVersion.plist from new (empty) library on mobile drive to original mobile library; open this original mobile library and merge in iMac library: SAME ERROR.
    Looking for help!

  • Importing playlists create duplicate library entries

I re-imaged my system, installed 7.X and added my music files. I then imported my saved playlists only to find that my song count increased my the playlist entry count and every playlist song generated a duplicate appearance of the songs in the library. The playlists were saved as text files but I also tried XML and got the same result. If I create a new playlist, save it, delete it and then import it, everything works fine.
Any thoughts before I regenerate 40 playlists with 700+ songs?
    Thanks!

I'm leaving on Saturday so I'd really love for SOMEONE to cast a bit of light over this...

  • Duplicate Library- need to remove one

I imported by mistake same library twice- how can i remove one of them?

    I don't really understand the question, but it is easy to start again;
Close iTunes and drag iTunes library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml to the desktop.
When you open iTunes you will have an empty library - then you can have another go at adding your music.
If you actually have two library files, you can switch beteen them by starting iTunes with the shift key held down and choosing the other library.
If this doesn't cover your problem, maybe you could clarify your question.
