Duplicate listings in Itunes

When i rip cd's into Itunes, they show up correctly. But when I sync my Ipod, if another artist played on the cd, it will list that one song twice (once with the whole album, once by itself). For example, I have the Genesis cd "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway". Under Geneis, the album appears with all the songs. But in addition, one of the songs (not the whole cd) appears under "Brian Eno / Genesis". Is there a way eliminate the second listing?
Thanks.

Sounds like you added you entire music folder back into the itunes library? If so you can choose View > View Option and tick off the"Date Added" box.
Now in your main library click on the Date Added columns and everything should be sorted together - maybe easier to see all the duplicate items that were added on one day. You can use the control/shift keys to select a lot at once and get rid of them.
You also might want to turn off the option to "Copy Files...."

  • How do I remove duplicate listings in iTunes window?

This is not what it seems. Long story short - I just bought a new MBA and migrated from a MB with most of my iTunes library on second partition of internal drive. Because that music did not "migrate," I just dragged it to the new computer. iTunes did not see most of the tracks. So, stuck with the possibility of "locating" each track one at a time, I chose to "Add to Library" and this added all the tracks to the iTunes library, but now I have duplicates of every track added. However, both titles point to the same file. I can remove the extra track name by selecting it; hitting delete; and then tell it to "keep files."
Is there a way to automate this so I don't have to go back an trash 6000 track names? TIA.

Have a look at Doug's AppleScripts there are a couple of scripts there to help manage duplicates. Search the page for "Corral iTunes Dupes" and "Corral All dupes": Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes
Doug also has a shareware application called Dupin specifically for managing duplicates, you can get it here: Dupin

  • Duplicate songs in iTunes music

I have seen other items of discussion and tried doing as was suggested in the past on this. Part of my problem is that every time I restart my computer, iTunes adds duplicate listings for songs under the place where one clicks on the Music icon on the left.
    1. I tried Araxis Find Duplicate Files. Problem is it finds the files in folders. The problem with iTunes is that it lists duplicates and points to the same file.
    2. I tried adding "Date Added" to the playlist view which wokred to separate the listings, but there is just one problem: it is impossible to know what you are deleting.
    3. I searched for exact duplicates, but one thing that is unclear is whether it shows all the duplicates that match exactly and how to know the one that shows is the one you want to delete. The question I guess is, "Can I select all those that show in the exact duplicates window and delete them?"
It woud be nice if someone at Apple would write a very clear article on the matter that tells one what to expect. That being too much to ask, maybe someone here can give some clear instructions. I think the Exact Dups feature will work, but I just don't know what exactly I am being shown.

My music files were created long befor I had itunes, but I have been usinfitunes for about 10 months. I recently noticed that my music file has gone from about 3,500 tracks to almost 9,000 tracks the change being duplicates. itunes will identify the duplicates but does not have the capability to clean up the database.
getting rid of about 5,000 duplicates is going to be a giant task and before I do it I would like to know how it happened and be comfortable it won't happen again. I just checked my preferences and I have selected "keep ... music folder organized".
My music data base is on an external hard drive and part of a home network. Sometimes I have added music from various computers on the network. when I want to update the library on one of the other computers I have erased all music in the library and then added the music data base to the itunes on the computer attached to the external hard drive. Is that where the duplication takes place?

  • How to Delete Duplicate Songs in iTunes 8

Is there an easy way to delete duplicate songs in iTunes 8?
A friend of mine with a large CD collection and I share music. The trouble is that in the process of exchanging music we have created quite a number of duplicates.
Is there a way to automate identifying and removing duplicate songs?

    hi,
you aren't missing this. Show duplicates is NOT a tool to allow to simply select all and hit deleted. It is showing you the duplicates, one beside the other, to allow you to discriminate two songs having the same name but that may not be duplicate. For exemple, they may be two different version of a same song and that you want to keep them. For this reason, automated process are somehow risky to loose also song that you want to keep.
however, if you still want to proceed with an automated script, you can find some at http://dougscripts.com/itunes/.
Personnally, I would still discriminate duplicated songs manually by reviewing the list of "show duplicate" to avoid deletion of song I wish to keep. I also have a quite large library and found many songs having the same name and not being duplicates.

  • I tried to delete all of my duplicate songs in iTunes and it deleted all of my music. Is there a way i get my music back?

i tried to delete all of my duplicate songs in iTunes and it deleted all of my music. Is there a way i get my music back?

From the backup you maintain in case something drastic happens to your collection as it surely will when your drive crashes, the computer is stolen, etc.?
Are the files in the trash?  I don't let iTunes manage my music so when I delete a track I have to hunt down the file, drag it to the trash, and empty the trash in order to get rid of it.  I don't know how iTunes does it for others.

  • Duplicates in my iTunes

I have duplicates in my iTunes. How do I eliminate one copy?
    Thanks

Depending on the amount of music you have, you can just hold control and click the tracks you want to delete and then click Edit > Delete (or press delete/backspace on the keyboard). You can also select a track, hold shift and press the up or down arrow to select multiple grouped tracks.
If there are too many, you can use the iTunes File > Display Exact Duplicates option.
You can also try one of the scripts or suggestions here -> how to delete duplicated songs all at one time?

  • How do i display duplicate files in itunes 11?

    hi,
does anyone know how to display my duplicate songs in itunes 11 please?

The show duplicates/show exact duplicates features have been left out of iTunes 11. Rumor suggests they will be restored in the next build. In the meantime I have written two Windows scripts to make playlists of Duplicates and Exact Duplicates, either from a selection of tracks or the entire library. Note that, as with the iTunes feature, this list makes no distinction between "originals" and "dupes", you have to decide which is which.
There is also my DeDuper script for automatically removing duplicates copies but keeping one remaining copy of each set. This can preserve ratings, play counts, playlist membership, etc. which are lost in a manual clean up. Please take note of the warning tobackup your library before deduping. See this thread for background on deduping and the script.
If you want to manually remove duplicate tracks use shift-delete to remove selected tracks from the library as well as the playlist. Keep one of each repeated group of files and don't send the others to the recycle bin unless you are sure that there are multiple files on the disc as opposed to multiple entries to the same file. Same advice to backup applies.

  • I can find duplicates in my itunes library but can't figure out how to delete them all at once

I can select all my duplicates in my itunes library but then can't figure out how to delete them all en masse?

    Hi, Abril_Perez17.
This may be related to a new feature embedded in iOS7 that shows all purchased music by default.  Go to Settings > Music, then turn off Show All Music.  See if the issue ceases once the feature has been disabled.  This information is located on page 63 of the user guide below.

  • HT2905 I want to delete duplicates from my iTunes music but cannot see "Display Exact Duplicates" in File menu.

    Hi,
I want to delete duplicates from my iTunes music but and iTunes help says to click on "Display Exact Duplicates" in File men but I don't appear to have this function.  Where else can I look?

Thanks Kappy. I had just found it but thanks reply.  Next question is:  Is there a quick way to then delete the duplicates without having to select each one and delete?

  • Why do duplicate albums appear on my iPod Classic screen when there are no duplicates in my iTunes Library?

Why do duplicate albums appear on my i{Pod Classic screen when there are no duplicates in my iTunes Library?

It's probably going to be a capitalisation error. In other words, one or more tracks on the album has a lower case letter at the beginning of the album name while all the others have a capital letter. They can be difficult to spot.
In iTunes, examine one of your duplicated albums carefully. You should be looking for a slight difference between the album title name. Look at the screenshot below, can you see the error in the album title?
    It is there...
The title track (Left Of The Middle). Look at the capitalisation of the album name.
Once you find you error in your album, re-type it (or copy-and-paste from one track to all the tracks) and then SYnc your iPod to iTunes. Does that cure it? If nto, let us know.

  • Why do duplicates occur in iTunes and how to avoid them

Why do duplicates occur in iTunes. I just moved my Library to a external hard drive to clear up space on my HD. Now I have dups. Sometime 3 of each song, sometimes 6 of each song. All together I ended up with more that 4,000 dups.
I have spend more time researching how to get rid of dups,( without manually taking them out of my itunes library), that the time it took to just manually remove them. I did download and intall the icorraldupes script, but that only fines the dups. If you delete them from the dup playlist they are still in the Library. A good script for reference, though. So, how do I avoid dups in the future? I just finished cleaning up my Libary of all dups. I figured it must have been something I did and would not want to repeat it again. I would hate to think that this is just some kind of bug or quirk within the iTunes program. If so I would not want to trust my collection of music in iTunes without burning up backups all the time.

Hopefully some MAC tech expert with iTunes can clear this up for us. After reading past post about this subject, before I posted mine today, I really didn't get a answer. Maybe I missed something? Maybe these dups happen differently in OS operating systems, verses Windows. If I don't get a answer here, I will call Apple and ask them. One way or the other I want to clear this up, because I don't want to open my itunes a few months down the line and find duplicates again.

  • HT2905 Duplicate items in iTunes

Is it possible to globally delete all duplicate items in iTunes rather than one at a time?

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See thisthread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning
to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.
