Duplicate media files

So i have a pretty large media collection. 144.73 gigs of music, 149.65 gigs of movies, and 49.90 in tv shows. i keep all the files in folders ive created on a terabyte external harddrive. my problem is that itunes has created its own folder with all my files duplicated in said folder DOUBLING the amount media in my hard drive. i now cant add anymore media to my harddrive. how do i corect this. i only want ONE copy of my files. preferablly the files i created. i add media to my intunes by dragging into itunes, not the file>add files to itunes method, if that makes a difference.

  • Itunes, add and remove media files? Playlist and smart playlist

My problem is i have synced all my music into itunes and now i do not know how to delete them.
I only want media that i need in itunes. What i did was sync all my media files into itunes where this has created a mess for me.
I have duplicate media files, i downloaded a software to scan this and remove but that seemed to not work.
I have used  Consolidating option as well but doesn't seem to be working.
I have tried to organise itunes from genres, bpm rating etc. but they won't go in the playlist i assign them to.
I have create another itunes and started again but i am having problems using smart play list and playlist.
Is there a way to uninstall itunes, will all the media be copy onto my account?
Has i want to add the media as i go along putting them into different genres, groups etc?

Yes i do understand sorry just want to solve my problems. Hmmm maybe apple should get a live support going that would be handle for apple customer's.
I wrote this on another thread:
I came on this forum due to a apple assistant on the phone when i rang them for support about a few queries i had. I found that the apple representative to be quite rude with short answer questions and not giving me further resources for further understanding on my topics.
i hope in by be active on the apple community support forums, contribute to the community and others!

  • ITunes Consolidation: Will it create duplicates of media files if they already exist in the new itunes destination folder but arent being referenced by the itunes library?

I have a macbook pro from fall 2010. I have been using my external HD as my primary itunes folder for the past 7 yrs ( i.e it is organized by itunes default categorization, etc). However, there is some overlap between my external HD itunes folder and my comps original itunes folder (probably 20-30% of my current library's media files were already duplicated there from when i first bought the HD and transferred files to the external, however they are mostly referenced from the external now). Also there are files in the comp's itunes folder that are not on my external (probably due to organizational mishaps and podcast downloads when not connected to the external, etc). I do not know how many files this is the case for.
Recently, i decided that i wanted to consolidate all of my itunes music into one concise folder on my macbook's HD to avoid these issues going forward.  I also just bought a new external which i will use to back up my comp's itunes folder once i consolidate everything to the comp. But i plan on using the itunes folder on the comp going forward or at least using the consolidate fcn to avoid these issues.
Here is my dilemma. Prior to learning of the consolidate feature today, I changed the default itunes folder in settings to the original itunes folder on the macbook and then manually dragged all of the media files from my external itunes folder to the macbook's itunes folder. There were a ton of duplicates or overlapping folders with similar artist names, so i opted to have them merge all folders where possible. After doing this, i realized the itunes library still references these files that i dragged and dropped from the external since that is where my default itunes folder used to be. At that point i then read and learned of the consolidate itunes feature which seems like the best way to do this. But i am afraid that if i consolidate my library to my macbook's itunes folder now, will it create duplicates of the 4000 + media files i just dragged to the macbook's itunes folder which are already in the itunes library but being referenced from the old external??
Question: Is there a way that i can make these files i just dragged to the macbook's itunes folder become the ones referenced by the itunes library through the consolidate feature without creating duplicates of these 4000+ files? I want to avoid having  three copies of these files (two duplicates in the itunes and the originals on the external). Furthermore, is there a best way to find out which files in the macbook's itunes folder are not being included in the library after consolidating everything to the computer's HD? Then after that, what is the best way to start backing this all up to my new external, so that this overlapping issue doesnt happen again?  Im assuming i just need to make sure to consolidate first when changing itunes folders going forward. Thank you. I know that was a lot  to read but hopefully someone can help with this issue.

    In general:
    - The best way to check if files are in a library is to drag the whole media folder to the library.  If something was missed it will be added.  If it is in the library is won't be added a second time.
    - If you have a second copy of a file and iTunes does not currently list that specific file in its database then even if it is identical to one already in the database it will add it a second time.  So if you have file xyz on the internal drive and the external drive and add them to iTunes you will end up with two entries for the same thing in iTunes because you really do have to copies of the files.  While this can happen with two copies on a single drive, it will almost definitely be the case when you have a copy of a file on two drives because iTunes really sees them as two different things.
-Unless you know how iTunes works, avoid moving files yourself.  Let the consolidate feature do all the file moving.  Manually moving files can really mess up iTunes unless you know what you are doing and have iTunes set to not try to do it itself.
    - There's no clean and easy way to delete duplicates.  The best thing is to change practice so you don't create them.   Here are  references:

  • Deleted duplicates in media file need restore

i thought i was deleting duplicates but ended up deleting all intoa media file? i have no idea how to restore help!

Meant to add that, if you can, there is probably a recent archive of your library file from the last iTunes upgrade that can be used to restore the entries in your library complete with playlist membership, date added etc. You'd want to rename the current iTunes Library.itl file as iTunes Library (Empty).itl, then copy the post recent library fril from the Previous iTunes Libraries folder into your main iTunes folder and rename it as iTunes Library.itl.
Alternatively if the content is on an Apple device there are ways to extract it.

  • Relinking many media files at once when there is duplicate media?

Has anyone had an issue where they have two sets of the same files (say a folder structure on a network and a folder structure locally on faster drives) and when trying to relink to one or the other set, Premiere defaults to the previous location?
I work with people over a slow network, where they give me files and I update them, etc. I pull media locally to my machine, mimicking the file structure, in order to have realistic playback performance.  This requires me to take the media files offline and relink them to my local drive.  If I select a group of files (more than two) and choose to link media to my local machine, it will ask me to point to the first file in the list.  When I do that, Premiere is SUPPOSED to search that local file structure and find media in a similar location...at least, that's what Final Cut does.  However, what it actually does is relink that first clip locally that it asked me for and then relink everything else I had selected back to the original location on the network.
The only solution I found was to dismount the network drive.  I shouldn't have to do this.
Is this something others have encountered?

when i had and older pc, i have to always work whit proxies. And I found the same problem you say.
when relinking ppro always try to reconnect to the same location where it was. what I did was,
    2 folders.
    proxies
    orginals
when I do the relink, first I rename the folder proxies. It is not the most elegant way.
    But it works !!!

  • Is there a better way to re-render audio waveforms (after changing media files)?

I'm shooting documentary footage on RED cameras at 6K resolution.  That generates a large amount of media.  The RDC format records R3D media files in 4GB chunks, which is actually relatively short compared to my hours-long media captures.  I've discovered that it's very handy to simply delete the R3D files from the RDC folder in cases where nothing is actually happening at that moment.  Since each R3D media file is timecode stamped, these actually stay in sync with my master audio track.  And Premiere Pro sensibly places gray diagonal bars where the underlying R3D files are missing.  All good.
What's not good is that Premiere Pro confuses itself about the starting point of the PEK files.  Instead of simply greying out the part of the audio waveforms that are missing due to the missing media, it shifts the *waveform* to start at the location of the first R3D clip that is present, which is wrong.  If I clean the cache, quit the project, restart the project, and let it rebuild the cache, the audio waveform is correctly drawn.
An ideal fix for this problem would be for Premiere Pro to recognize that if it re-links media it should re-render the audio PEK file.  An OK work-around would be to make it easy to just re-render the PEK file for a given media clip.

A slightly quicker way to do what you described for an images is to select 'Duplicate version' instead of 'New version from Master' and then 'Remove adjustments' from version 1. This will leave you with the first version as the 'before' and the second version as the 'after' without having to use L&S.
If you need to do this for 108 images, it might be quicker to do the following:
Export Masters for all 108 images.
Reimport these into a new project (called 'before', for example)
You will then have a new project with the 'before' images and your original project with the 'after' images. You could then build an album to group all of these together. When you've finished with the 'before' & 'after' images (build your web gallery or emailed them or whatever), simply delete the 'before' project.

  • Time machine on external drive will not back up itunes media file on a separate external drive. Have already reformated itunes media drive, dragged itunes media backup file from time machine (old copy) and removed time machine plist and restarted.

Two external drives, one for time machine backups and a second (daisy chained firewire) for itunes media folder . Time machine fails to backup the media file saying could not be completed, with no error specified. Steps taken already include reformating drive with media, dragging older media backup file from time machine disc to media disc, and deleting time machine plist and starting time macine preferences upon startup. Media folder is approx 200 gb, mostly ripped dvd movies.
    Any help for this??
    Thanks

  • Not all my songs are showing in itunes even though they are in the Itunes Media file directory

Not all my songs are showing in itunes even though they are in the itunes Media Dir.  I have spent hours trying to find out why so I moved the songs out of the Music/itunes/itunes media and uninstalled itunes.  I then restarted my pc and re-installed itunes.  When I opened itunes the same songs are still there (but cannot be played as cannot find location) even though I have not put anything back in the itunes media dir.  To me there seems to be a refreshing problem as itunes is not looking at the directory even through the advanced preferences area is mapped to the correct area.
    Help please.
    Thanks

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here: Find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership, or that sometimes the same file can be represented by multiple entries in the library and that deleting one and recycling the file will break the other.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.
See also Make a split library portable for some thoughts on best practice when it comes to organizing the library and media files.

  • Using Media Manager to Cut up Long Media Files

After reading the chapters in the manually quite thouroughly, I still can't make Media Manager to do what I want it to. I need several long media files broken into smaller files, for use in soundtrack pro.
I captured 17 Tapes worth of footage from start to stop, and then logged them and turned individual shots and taks into subclips. After importing each subclip into SoundTack Pro, I realized that it will import the entire original media, and not just the sub clip, thus I decided that I needed to break up all my actual media files, into smaller files. (If there's a way around this, seeing as how working in SoundTrack with an individual Takes audio is my goal, I'd love to hear about it)
So, I tried to use media manager. I set it up with "use existing" media selected, "Delete unsed media from selected clips" selected, "base media files on" set to clip names, and did NOT select duplicate selected clips and place into a new project. I did NOT use handles.
After it was done processing, it did not break the files into individual takes (the way the subclips were made) like I wanted it to. It did break the files down smaller, but it includes multiple takes and multiple shots in each file.
Can someone please point me in the right direction as to what I need to do? Or, if someone can show me a work around for the using subclips in SoundTrack pro (I know this is not the SoundTrack pro Forum) then I would do fine using the clips how they are.
    Thanks for your time.

You really need to go to the Final Cut PRO forum.

  • Premiere Overwriting Media Files

Having a serious problem. Editing a sequence with video footage from a Canon 5D and 7D, and an audio track in WAV format from a Xoom recorder. Attempting to cut the audio to replace camera audio.
After working with the project for a couple of days, Premiere appears to have overwritten a number of the ORIGINAL audio files on the hard disk. The affected clips in the timeline appear with bold hashmarks through them (the track is not locked, it is only a random selection of clips in the timeline that are effected). When the sequence plays, there is no audio from these clips. They no longer display a waveform in the source monitor.
Further, the link to the orginal media is no longer present (the opotion to "reveal in finder" or "reveal in Bridge" in the project panel is greyed-out.
When I search in the media file folders on the har disk, I find that the original files have been changed at the time the clips became inaccesible. When I attempt to play them in Quicktime or Quickview them, they open showing no contents (0.00 start time and 0.00 duration), though the files still display a file size (i.e. 7mb).
We have replicated this problem storing our project (and its corresponding media folders) both on a shared raid drive on a workstation and on a striped raid drive on a shared server directory.
    Hardware/software info as follows:
Editing performed on an iMac i7 2.93 ghz, 8 GB ram, ATI Radeon HD 5750/1GB, Premiere Pro CS 5.03
Files located on a Mac Pro Server 3.2 ghz Quadcore, 8 GB ram running OS X Server 10.6.7 with a 2 TB Raid 1 (2 x 1 TB Drives Striped).
Previously the files were on a Mac Pro Workstation, OS X 10.6.7 with a shared 4 TB Raid 1 (2 x 2 TB Drives Striped)
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Premiere may be non-destructive, but I have had it break files before, in a manner similar to what you're describing. In my experience, this has been tied to the "Write XMP ID to Files on Import" option in Edit > Preferences > Media.
With that option enabled, Premiere will write some metadata into an imported file which it then uses to keep track of the file as it travels through the Adobe applications. I've had a few instances--both with specific file formats (SWF is an example) and with random individual files--where that process effectively broke files both in Premiere and on the desktop. I've actually rescued a few files by opening them up in a text editor, deleting the metadata (it's visible as XML), and resaving the file--it imports and plays properly, then. Of course, if you don't disable the "Write XMP ID" option, it happens all over again.
Not saying this is specifically what is happening here, but here's a test if you're feeling enterprising:
Find a file (WAV, for example) that hasn't been imported into Premiere yet. Make a copy of it with Explorer.
Import one of the copies into Premiere, making sure the "Write XMP ID" option is checked before you do so.
Grab and install WinMerge, which is a great little program for comparing two files. It will have an option to add an Explorer context menu item to "Compare" files--this makes it easy to do just that.
Using WinMerge, compare the imported and the not-yet-imported WAVs; near the top of the file that was imported, you should see a few lines of XML data, while the file that wasn't imported won't have this. WinMerge keeps the scrolling synced so you can easily see differences between the two files. The rest of the file will be all binary mish-mash, but you should be able to see where the metadata is inserted--make a note of that.
With Premiere close, find one of your "damaged" WAVs (make a copy of it, just to be safe), and open it up in a text editor; I'm partial to Notepad++. Pretty quickly, you'll be able to see the injected XML metadata. Simply select it and delete, making sure to delete only the parts that weren't in the non-imported file above. It should be pretty clear where that is, but just in case, that's why we made a duplicate first.
Once you delete the metadata, simply save the file, and try playing it back in whatever player didn't work correctly before. If it works (here's hoping!), give it a shot in Premiere. If it works there, I'd suggest fixing all your broken WAVs, and then opening them in an audio editor of one sort another and saving to new files (same format). This will basically just repackage the contents of the file in a new container that hopefully won't break again if you re-enable the "Write XMP ID" option (which is a good idea).
If that doesn't work... well... we'll cross that bridge later

  • Duplicate photo files  being created in Bridge

I have a Mac Book pro with sno leopard and use CS5 and am having weird issues with photos from my canon 5d mk II and 7 d. Bridge is creating duplicate photo files after I download them. Sure adobe told me to purge my cache , ok, that works but it just starts re creating them again?

You can set up a scan when you create a new device in System Preferences:
go to System Preferences --> FCSVR Pref pane --> Devices Pane and then choose create new device ("+" sign and the Device Assistant will appear. You choose the type and then you can set up a Full or Add only Scan here.)
Other option is to set up a Scan via the Administration window in the Java Client:
This is not as easy since there is no Device Assistant.
go to Admin window in Java Client --> Response and then create a new 'Scan' response on the device you want to scan. 'Scan Productions' is something different, maybe you want that instead, I don't know. Depending on how you set it up, it can create a Production in FCSVR catalogue for each folder or subfolder and that media will be scanned and placed into that Production in FCSVR catalogue.
Anyways, once you create the Scan Response, go to Admin pane --> Schedule. Create a new schedule and add the 'Scan' response you just created to the "Response List" section. Don't forget to check "Enabled"...can't tell you how many times I created the response but then forgot to enable it.
Once you scan the assets, they are in the FCSVR catalogue with clip proxies, thumbnails and posterframes. If you have existing FCP projects that use this media, you will want to make sure the media in the FCP project is connected to that same media that was scanned. When you upload the FCP project, it will not dup the assets, just add the FCP project to it, unless you didn't set the EIP device correctly. If you look in Search All Jobs, the only thing that should be generated at this point it Edit Proxies (if you enabled them) and Elements.
Now my question to you is the same as Chris' question here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9147105#9147105. How did you set things up so far? What is your workflow? Where is your media?

  • Duplicate video files not working

Random video files don't work when transferred or duplicated.
    One process;
I transfer .mov files from one computer to the local drive on the mac. Most of the files work- others just show the quicktime icon, but fail to open citing "The document “XXXX.mov” could not be opened. The movie's file format isn't recognized."
    Another process;
I already have the video files (.mov, .mp4, etc.) already on the local mac- most files have no issues, but when I duplicate the file some just show the quicktime icon and fail opening with 'The document “XXXXX.xxx” could not be opened. The movie's file format isn't recognized."
One thing is clear- if a file fails, once transferred or duplicated, that file will ALWAYS fail if re-transferring or re-duplicating.

If you click Yes the project file will be updated when you save it. That has nothing to do with the media.
Are the Lesson and Media folders still in the Book Files folder (or whatever it's called)?
Select one of the clips in the browser and use Edit>Item Properties. One of the first lines is Source. That gives you the file path for where your media is supposed to be located. What does it say? If nothing is there, use the File>Reconnect function and point the application to where the media is located.

  • HT5958 Why not leave the choice to let the media files in their place in the update ?

Why not leave the choice to let the media files in their place (in the Final Cut Events folder for exemple) in the update?
All my media files are missing for other software (like Motion) and we loose the control of our raw footage.
This would have the dual space on our hard drives to protect our original files separately.

Ok i find a part of the solution. I can Open the Package on the library in the Finder. I have everything inside. So it's good for me to keep the hand on all my medias. But others software can't open it, it's hidden (for Motion or DaVinci Resolve for exemple). I must search all neccesary files on Finder, duplicate on a normal folder to use it.
    Thanks for the response.

  • Edit C300 footage natively (NO duplicate media) in 10.1.4?

Can I edit C300 footage natively (NO duplicate media) in FCPX 10.1.4? If so, how? When I import it automatically creates new files. This takes up too much hard drive space for me. It looks like from the current update description that you can edit from the C300 source files but in practice that is not happening.

Sorry Al, no that's not my question. I am not trying to edit off my media card, I always backup that card to an external drive. I didn't realize how unclear I'm being, so let me try again.
    Here is my workflow:
After I shoot on the C300 and fill up a CF media card I will dump the contents of that card on an External Hard Drive.
When I open up FCPX and select import and choose that folder (the backup I just created on my external hard drive), the program will start creating MOV files of all that media (essentially duplicating what is already on the external hard drive).
If (INSTEAD OF IMPORTING) I drag the contents from that folder (the backup I created on my external hard drive) straight into FCPX, the program will let me edit all that media WITHOUT creating new MOV files. This is possible because I have the MXF4Mac pluggin.
My ultimate question is if the new FCPX update allows you to edit footage in the same way, that is, use the original backup of the media from my external hard drive and edit those MXF files WITHOUT having the program create duplicate MOV files.
I'm guessing this is not an option.
