Duplicate music files on hard drive

I have recently formatted my computer, and in the backup process of my music in iTunes (built up over many years), i realised that there are duplicates of most of my music files in my iTunes media folder, however they are not duplicated in iTunes. For example, a song might be called "Paint it Black" with a duplicate "Paint it Black 2"
The problem is, i don't know what file of each duplicate corresponds to the one in iTunes. I tried a few of the duplicates to delete either one or the other, and see if iTunes would still play the file, but i didn't get a consistent result.
For this reason I can't use a program like Similarity, or go through and delete them manually without possibly ruining my library in iTunes. The other problem with manually reselecting the files is that the total folder almost cracks 80GB in total.
So, my question is, is there any way to copy my iTunes library directly out of iTunes, put it back in and let iTunes reorganise it, or maybe restore my library from my iPod, while still maintaining things like playlists, play counts etc? Would be much appreciated, thanks

My DeDuper script is designed to help clean up. See this thread for background.

  • ITunes 7.1.1 deletes music files on hard drive

After updating iTunes to 7.1.1, I discovered that my playlist for "alternative" music had dissappeared. OK, no problem, the music files must still be in "music/itunes". Searched through this folder, but ALL the "alternative" music files were gone from the hard drive - all the music burned from CDs, even those purchased from iTunes! Used "find" in various ways, no luck. They are truly deleted.
After hours and hours of reinstalling all the "alternative" music from backups, all was back as before. I shut my Mac down for the night. The next day I opened iTunes and the "alternative" playlist was gone again - and the music I had put back onto my hard drive had been erased again!
I've tried starting iTunes from an old library - the playlists come back, but the music is not, just shows question marks. I've even done a virus check of the whole HD.
As any ideas as to why this is happening, and what to do?
Now I'm worried that other playlists, and their actual music files will be unpredictably wiped.
Has this happened to anyone else's "Alternative" music files and/or playlists?
I can't believe my music files have been erased off my hard drive - twice!
    Hard to trust iTunes now.
    G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thanks for the reply, it's appreciated.
I usually turn off the computer each night. After updating to 7.1.1, just the "alternative" playlist and music files were gone from my HD. I re-installed the music files from a backup HD.
To test things, I quit iTunes and then opened it again and looked in the music file on the HD, a number of times. The replaced music was still there.
The next morning, I turned on the computer [Of course, I know that an off computer can do nothing ]. When it came time to open iTunes, again the music files were gone. I didn't check to see if the files were there before I opened iTunes, unfortunately.
I did use Norton, but only AFTER I discovered the files were gone ...
At the mo' I'm trying to recreate the problem to see if I can further narrow it down. Putting just one song into the Alternatives playlist, shutting down, starting up, etc. See if it's there. Repairing permissions with Disk Utility, etc etc.
Again, thanks for trying to help!

  • HT1751 Restored music files from hard drive to c drive to itunes

Finally got the albums restored but now missing half the artwork.  Even when I click Get Album Artwork, it does not restore all that I had before.

Somehow I got it all back, but don't ask me what I did.  I just clicked things until something worked.

  • Remove Duplicate Music Files, But Keep iTunes Copy

How can you remove duplicate copies of music files on your hard drive but be sure to keep the one iTunes is using and keeping the iTunes Library intact?
I have hundred of duplicate music files, using a tool like CleanGenius or others I can get a list of duplicate files, but I do not want to break iTunes Library and only want to remove the duplicates that are not being used in iTunes.

I have the same issue. If I have a file in my music folder and then click on it and it opens in itunes it creates a duplicate file in my itunes library. Besides sorting in finder and deleting one by one based upon folder location is there a less mind numbing way to accomplish this task.
Or do I have to pay the $10 for a program like Gemini?

  • Moving ITunes Music to New Hard Drive

Hi! I would like to free up space on my internal hard drive by purchasing an external one this weekend and moving the music files to this drive. I read this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748 and I still have just one more question. I am not sure if others ended up having a library that looks like this, but in addition to the organized folders (by artist) in the ITunes folder, in C:\Documents and Settings\Dana Christine\My Documents\My Music there are about 100 MP3 files (not organized, just sitting there) which are a part of my library. How can I go about getting these files moved over as well? Will the process described in the link I attached take care of moving these files also? No tutorials on moving files that I have seen has covered such an issue. I really appreciate your help.

If these MP3 files are in the iTunes library (you can play them in iTunes), they will get copied when you Consolidate library.

  • When you are pulling music from a hard drive and it says music can not be found, is there a way to stop it from doing that every time I play music from my computer? It used to find all music now it only finds 1 song at a time

When pulling music from a harddrive and it say music can not be found, is there a way to stop this from happening every time I play music on my computer? It used to find all music when serching for song but now it only finds 1 at a time. I have over 2000 songs so I can't go through this every time.

    1) However I do not want to move my itunes Music onto the flash drive, only my Movies, and want to keep my music on my hard drive.
    Is this possible?
    Yes
    2) Do the MacBook Air's not have a separate program other than itunes that can play movies? If so, is there a program I can get to solve this problem? I went onto the App Store to see if there was something I could download, but all the apps were for creating DVD's, not simply playing them.
If you can play the movies in iTunes, you should be able to open the movie files using Quicktime, which should already be on your system.  If you have already transferred the files to your flash drive, open the flash drive in Finder, and hold control when you click on the movie file (or right click if you have the enabled) and select Open With Quicktime Player.  This should play the movie directly from the flash drive.
If you want to set all .m4v files to open with Quicktime by just double clicking on the file, you can follow the steps here: http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2573/os_x_how_to_change_default_application_to_op en_file_type/
    3) If 1. & 2. questions are solvable, will it then be safe to delete the movies from my itunes?
You can move the TV shows to your flash drive by dragging them from the iTunes window to your flash drive in Finder or the flash drive icon on the desktop.  When you are sure everything is transferred over to your external device, you can delete the movie from iTunes.  I recommend playing the videos from the flash drive first before deleting them in iTunes.
To delete the videos from iTunes, you can highlight them and press the delete key on your keyboard.  In the next prompt, you would want to move it to the trash so that it is deleted from your internal hard drive.
    I hope that helps!

  • ITunes can not find my music on external hard drive

Had to redo my hard drive; had all music on external hard drive; copied iTunes folder onto external hard drive. Now that my desktop hard drive is clean, and new iTunes downloaded, it can not find my music on the external drive which I have always used. Is there some setting I am missing, do I have to copy music onto CPU?

Hold the SHIFT key while launching iTunes. You will get the option to navigate to the iTunes folder on your external drive. In the iTunes folder point it to the iTunes Library.itl file.

  • I have all my music on external hard drive. It doesn't all import to Itunes

I have about 76 gigs of music on my external hard drive. I just got a new ipod and I need to put the music on it. When I try to put the music on the hard drive into ITunes I only get 60 gigs of music in ITunes. I found a specific album that didn't import and it won't add to ITunes by File, Add to Library, or dragging. I assume thats the same thing it did to the rest of my music. How do I get it to all add?

Launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and specify it. If the external drive doesn't contain the iTunes database files, create a new library there and import that music.
If the library contains any rented movies, they won't play on a different computer.

  • I am using FCPX 10.1.3. and want to duplicate my project, and its complete resources, to a different hard drive.  When I click "duplicate", it automatically duplicates the project in its current hard drive.  How do duplicate to a different hard drive

I am using FCPX 10.1.3. with Yosemite, and want to duplicate my project and its complete resources to a different hard drive.  When I click "duplicate", it automatically duplicates the project in its current hard drive, unlike the previous FCPX that gave you options. How do duplicate to a different hard drive?

Since projects are now stored in events and events are stored in libraries, you need to create a new l;bray on that different drive or open an existing library on that drive. Then duplicate your project and move it to the new library. It will copy the media. Then use the Consolidate Project File command to round up any external assets; there may or may not be any.

  • After update I can't add music on my hard drive to iTunes.

I'm trying to add music from my hard drive to my iTunes library.  Both by opening the library and selecting File to add and by opening containing folder with the song, right clicking and selecting "Open With" and choosing iTunes.  iTunes comes to the front but that's it.  It will not load the song into it's library.  The mp3 file is not corrupt - it's all the music files.  This started after the latest update.  I don't have Match so there's no conflict there.  I've restarted iTunes and the computer several times.  It's almost like a setting has been switched and is telling iTunes to stop getting file as soon as it sees where it's from.
Anyone have any suggestions?  Many thanks!

.WMA cannot be used with iTunes on a Mac.  It is a Windows proprietary format and can only be used by iTunes if it is the PC version.  Your best bet would be to re-rip the CDs.  You can try to convert the .wma files (this may require you purchase additional software unless you still have the PC) but to get the best quality you should not rip one lossy format to another and instead start out with the full quality CD again.

  • HT1727 i copied itune music from old hard drive to memory disk the copied onto new hard drive into itunes and music wont play unless removalbe disk is inserted

i copied itune music from old hard drive to memory disk the copied onto new hard drive into itunes and music wont play unless removalbe disk is inserted

Then your iTunes must be looking at the removable disc, not your hard drive. Did you actually copy the songs onto your computer, or simply tell iTunes to look at the removable drive?
Highlight a song and click on File/Get Info/Summary>Where and check the location that iTunes has listed for the song. What does it say?

  • HELP! updating music from external hard drive

I recently had my computer wiped, but backed up all my music on my hard drive. Now I don't know how to get it back into itunes without going into each artist folder and adding each song. This is not only time consuming, but I would loose all of my playlists. I had previously linked my itunes to this external drive so I know it can read the music there. Any ideas on how to get it into my itunes? Thank you!

Did you b/u and save the 2 files - iTunes Library and iTunes Music Library.xml. These files are located by default in HD>User>Music>iTunes. If those 2 files are not in that location then iTunes will create new ones. These 2 files are how iTunes and other apps keep track of the tunes, location etc. If you didn't keep those 2 files then you will be at square one and have to start over by "adding" the tunes back. If you do have those 2 files then put them into the correct location - with iTunes closed - make sure you have directed iTunes to your ext HD - then open iTunes see if iTunes can "see" the tunes and PL etc.

  • Problems transfering music from external hard drive to ipod.

When I plug both ipod and external hard driver (WD 1600B014) into my Gateway laptop, only 1 device will work at a time with the other saying "usb device not recognised". This means I am unable to copy selected itunes songs onto my ipod.
This is driving me insane as I have 60gb of music on my hard drive which I want to chop and change frequently.
I have tried all manner of solutions including buying a powered usb hub (belkin) and starting a clean sheet with my laptop, installing all manner of new drivers for the usb ports.
I have the same problem with my 5G ipod 40gb.
I have tried the same problem on my dads desktop computer and the same problem arrises.
Does anyone have any answers as this has been driving me mad for ages and ages.
Is this a common thing or is it a problem with Western digital hard drives (although i thought they were a pretty big brand).
Any help would really be appreciated.

if I want to copy all those song files onto my iPod, they have to be copied into itunes first, and there's not nearly enough space on my desktop for that.
No, you don't have to copy the tracks to your internal hard drive. Just turn off the "copy music to iTunes Music Folder when adding" option in the iTunes Advanced preferences. Then use the "Add To Library" menu command and select the appropriate folder(s) on your external drive. iTunes will add the tracks to the Library but not move them to the internal drive.
Once that's done, use iTunes to transfer the music to the iPod. You can then, if iTunes is set for manual synchronization, remove the tracks from the Library if you want to remove the reference to the external drive.

  • How do I transfer music from old hard drive to Mavericks?

how do I transfer music from old hard drive to Mavericks?

    You need only post once.
More information would help.  The simplest answer is drag the files from the old drive to the iTunes window when you have the application open, or the Automatically Add To iTunes folder.  If you mean the whole library that is a different answer.

  • I am trying to play my digital music off a hard drive onto my home stereo.  I would like to know if the mac mini can just hook to my processor and play music through the processor(preamp) on my home stereo speakers?

I currently have a nice home stereo component system.  I also have a 500 GB external hard drive loaded with music.  I am looking for a way to play the music off this Hard Drive onto my home stereo system.  I currently have a WD home entertainment box that I can play movies that I download off the Internet on my TV, of course piped through my home stereo for the sound.  I would like to know if the mac-mini could be used in this form also.  Just have the HD hooked to it, the TV would become my monitor and the mac mini would play the music ... RANDOMLY ... with the use of iTunes.  This of course would be hooked up to the home system with an hdmi cable and the HD hooked up through a USB connection.
Just would like to know if this could work?

    Yes. Is the short answer.
You can directly connect the speaker out port of the Mac mini to an input on the AV Receiver which then feeds your speakers. This would be an audio only solution. If you use a TOS-Link connection this will be a pure digital connection ensuring the best quality (important for audiophiles).
You can if you wish connect the video from the Mac mini to the AV Receiver, and if you have a Mac mini with HDMI or a Mini Displayport you can run the audio and video via a single cable. (Older models would use two cables, the aforementioned TOS-Link pus a DVI to HDMI cable.)
If you do connect the video output from the Mac to the AV Receiver you can then display this on your TV, and have as one possibility iTunes displayed with perhaps one of the iTunes visualisers playing along with the music. Another possibility would be to use FrontRow on the Mac.
A different approach would be to have the Mac mini stream over a network to a device e.g. the Sonos Zoneplayer which is then connected to the AV Receiver. An AirPort Express is also able to do this.
