Duplicate names in artist list?

Several of my artists are showing up multiple times in the artist list of my Nano. For instance the group "Rise Against" appears six times total. Each of the individual Rise Against artists have all the same albums and all of the same songs. I have tried unloading and reloading my play lists but the problem still ensues. Does anyone out there now how to correct this problem?

  • IPod artist list has blank names?

A funky thing is happening with my 60GB video iPod. When I scroll through the artist list, there are two artists that are duplicated... and strangely, the artist name is blank on the duplicated list. This is obviously not what is on my computer. It also happens that I have music videos for those two artists, so this seems to have something to do with associating music videos with artists that you have regular music for.

    Update:
Doing some unrelated things in iTunes, I noticed that the actual files may have something to do with it. Looking at the folders I noticed this....
A Green Day Video is in this folder G_r_e_e_n D_ay.
I checked the dates for all videos that are like that.
    November 19
Wonder if there was an ipod/itunes update around then.
Anyway, I took the video out and renamed it (and updated the info with LOSTIFY) and imported the file back into itunes. It did seem to go back to the correct folder.
    Seems to work fine.
I no longer see the second "blank" artist that contains green day.
I did look at my library (in finder) and did NOT notice a similar problem with podcasts. I think some of this is because the Podcasts do not have the artist field filled out. But that doesn't explain the 5-6 duplicates in the Artists (ipod) menu. From a few random clicks between podcast blanks I see that the lists look alike.

  • CDs loaded, Artist name does not appear in ARTISTS list

Among all the CDs I've loaded and songs purchased, I have 2 Carly Simon
CDs on my video iPod. However, Carly Simon's name does not appear in my
list of ARTISTS in the Music Menu.
I did a sync with my iTunes list and the songs are indeed loaded.
Why is her name missing from the list and how do I get it back?
    It used to be there!
    Thanks-

I just found the answer on the discussion board.
In my SETTINGS I had compilations turned on.
When I switched it off, Carly Simon was back in my
    ARTISTS list.

  • Artist name does not appear in artist list but album name is in album list - Ipod Classic 160gb

For an album I have imported onto my iPod from iTunes, the album name is in the Album list but the Artist name is not on the Artist list.  I have tried deleting the album from the iPod and re-adding from ITunes but the same result.  It is a single artist album, so the artist name is exactly the same for each track; all the tracks are there.  Big nuisance as I use artist name a lot to find specific albums.

    ecb31 wrote:
this did not work for me,
Possibly because your problem (you say) was the album name. The original post was about the artist name and is therefore a different problem.
    ecb31 wrote:
...I had to fill in the Album for each song, then it showed on my ipod, for ones I did ot know, I just put bloody apple.
    Huh?
Let me get this right, you had lots of songs without the album name in them, so you filled in the album name yourself - if you knew the album name. If you didn't know the album name, you then entered the same text on all the rest of those songs. So now, you must have a lot of songs all on the same album, even though they're not meant to be - and - you've put text in to a lot of your songs that will remind you forevermore, of just how unhappy you are.
    Well! &
My question to you is; where did you get the songs from, that they came without the correct information in them?
If you imported them from a CD, iTunes will go and get the information for you.
If you bought the songs from the iTunes Store, or another music retailer, the information is in the digital file that you purchased.
How therefore, does so much of your music appear to be incomplete?
Am I missing something, or have you simply failed to explain the porblem properly?

  • Certain Artists Do Not Show Up On Artist List

I recently purchased a new iPod Classic and everything is lovely, but a few artists just aren't showing up on my artists list. The files are there - I can access the music in question through the album search feature - but the name does not show up. Out of my 50 gigs of music, there are only a handful of artists that I am having this problem with. I've tried reentering the names for each of the albums, but to know avail. Do you know why some artists/discs just aren't showing up on my main organizational menu? Thanks so much for the help.

Alternatively, just turn off the Compilation feature on the iPod -- go to +Settings / Main Menu+ and uncheck Compilation, and +Settings / Music Menu+ and uncheck Compilation.
I'm not sure that will do the trick. Artists not showing up on the Artist menu is usually because the album is marked a "Part of a Compilation" - as you say.
This is why, look what happens in this case; I have only two songs by the artist Oasis, one on the album *Acoustic 3* and the other on *Top of the Pops 2* . Both of these albums are true compilation albums, that is - they have songs by various artists on the one album and therefore the *album artist* is _various artists_ and it's marked as a compilation. As a result, the artist Oasis does not appear in my artist list. However, if I were to add an album where the only artist is Oasis, the *album artist* would be Oasis and therefore Oasis would appear in the artist list _and in that list_ would be all three albums! (The comp albums would only show the Oasis track of course.)
But there could be another reason! iTunes uses Gracenote to provide information about an album. If whoever created the Gracenote entry has listed an album as a compilation album (the compilation box is marked yes) because it is a _compilation of tracks by one artist but from different albums_ , guess what? It's a compilation! The album *The Whole Story* by Kate Bush is such an album. If that was the only album of hers that I had, she would not be on the artist list, but if I had her *Hounds of Love* album, she would be on the artist list and The Whole Story would show up!
I know - it drives you crazy!
The solutions: if a complete "one artist" album - The Whole Story for instance - is missing, go to *Get Info* for the whole album and mark the "Part of a Compilation" box as No . If you are about to import a new album, make sure the "Part of a Compilation" is off before importing it into iTunes. For a true compilation album (various artists) - that's a bit more difficult. Either accept it or, do you have one track (even the same one) from another album, or a CD single or single song that you can import to iTunes and mark as *not part of a compilation* ? If so, import it in order to create an entry for that artist.
By the way, while we are discussing all this - Greatest Hits albums. If you have albums by different artists but with the same album name, Greatest Hits for instance, add the artist name to the album title (Greatest Hits, Santana) so that your iPod can differentiate between their album and Greatest Hits, Alice Cooper. If you don't do this, when you look at Albums /album title you will see tracks from both albums together on one album.

  • How can I change the names of catagories that have been added to my music library?  Is it possible to change names or artists or gendre and how to do it?

How do I change the names of artists or gendre in the itunes list after importing an album?  Is it posssible to change that information?

Yes. Select one or more tracks (use ctrl or shift clicks to add/remove or extend a selection) then right-click or press CTRL-I to Get Info. Use the different tabs of the dialog to make changes.
For general advice on getting things neat & tidy see my article on Grouping tracks into albums.

  • How do i find out what is behind names like"artist - track1"

    hi guys,
i'm new to itunes and i'm using it since a week or so, its simply amazing. the bad side is that i recognized that almost 20% of my music has no id3tags. So itunes list them with names like "artist - track4 - album" and so on. but in my explorer view there are still named, so how can i find out which specific file is meant with "artist - track4 - album"??? i mean, is there any way to get a information about the place where the file was before itunes imported and regrouped it in its library??? in the moment i've about 100 tracks wich are named "artist - track4 - album" for example.
    thx and greetz
    André

i mean, is there any way to get a information about the place where the file was before itunes imported and regrouped it in its library???
Nope. Short of playing it and recognizing the song, that is.
This is why it's a good idea to make sure everything is tagged before letting iTunes reorganize it all.
You can do a Get Info on a track in iTunes and look at the first tab to see what file it's referring to (next to Location:). But that may not be useful.

  • Alphabetical sorting of Music Artists [Name of Artist] All Songs?

When I go to Music>Artists>[Name of Artist]>All Songs, it sorts the songs by album, is there a way to have this sorted alphabetically instead, without regard to album? Basically I want a way to view an alphabetical list of songs by a certain artist without making a million playlists. This would only apply to Music>Artists>[Artist]>All Songs, I want everything else to stay as is. This is for a current gen Ipod Classic. Also, would doing this (if it's even possible) mess up the sorting of artists who I only have one album for (I would want these to stay sorted by track number)?

Regarding the playlists, just click on the NAME column within each playlist to sort the list by name. Make sure the shuffle icon is not selected before you do this. Your playlists will be in Track Name order now. (You must do this for EACH playlist)
I believe when choosing an individual artist, then choosing all albums by that artist, the tracks will be sorted by album name then track number per album, so the ALBUMS will be played in alphabetical order, but the songs will play in the track order of each album. There is no way to chage this, as far as I know.
There may be a workaround for this by removing all the track numbers from all of your files. However, this will mess up your album order if you ever wish to listen to individual albums.
To each his own, I know, but hearing all songs in alphabetical order drives me insane.

  • New iPod update has messed up my Artist list!!!

I would greatly appreciate if anyone could help me out, as this problem is causing a great deal of annoyance & frustration. My iPod recently that there was a new update to download, which I did. However, once I did this, this has greatly messed up my Artist listings. For example, I had the Ozzy Osbourne "Prince Of Darkness" set on my iTunes. Disc 3 of this set is Ozzy with other artists, so the Artist name on these songs are written as Ozzy with Primus, Ozzy with Type O Negative, etc. I have it written as Artist Sort Name: Ozzy Osbourne and not listed as a compilation, so that it still lists under the name of Ozzy Osbourne in Artist List. Before the update download, everything was nicely organized under this one name. Now however, every different name (ie. ...with Primus, ...with Type O Negative) is now listed in Artists under Ozzy Osbourne. This is only one of many examples were this has occured, so as can be imagined, my Artist List is now greatly disorganized. It is very frustrating, especially since I have been spending a lot of time trying to organize my iPod. Can you please tell me how I can get things straight again. Thanks,
    -Colin

  • Not able to find Group/singer in the "artist" list but only by album

After importing a cd, the artist name appears in my library, but then on my ipod I can only locate some groups/singer/artist by looking for the album.
Why aren't all of the artists appearing in my "artist" list on my ipod? THANKS MUCH!!

It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a multiple song info window, and from there you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
If you have, select 'no' instead and click 'ok'. Do this with any CD that has this issue. This will alter the info in iTunes, and you should then connect your iPod and synchronize the changes.
The problem arises because the information contained on the Gracenote CD Data Base (where iTunes gets all it's album/artist/track info from), is sometimes incorrect. It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not.
You should also check that the songs have album name info in their ID tags.
See: Some songs don't don't show under artist on my iPod.

  • Signs "A" and "1 2 3" on a screen while scrolling artist-list

Suddenly I've found out, that strange signs appear on my iPod's screen when I scroll the click-wheel to the very beginning and to the very end of a list of artists: the letter «A» in a black square appears in the middle of a screen, and the sign «1,2,3» in the same black square is on a screen when I’m at the end-point of a list. The signs remain on the screen unless I take the finger off the click-wheel. Theese signs cover the parts of the names of artists, which are in the centre of a screen, where the signs appear.
    What's wrong?

It's normal, and believe me, you'll be grateful for it if you ever get a big music collection.
I have about 4000 songs on my iPod now and I'll have closer to 10,000 by the time I'm done encoding my CD collection to MP3 and when I'm scrolling fast it really helps to see those letters! They let you zero in on the part of the alphabet where your artist/song is located so you can scroll more slowly to find it.

  • You cannot add a job with a duplicate name, as a web service already exists with name ... please rename the job and try again

We are attempting to add a web service job and getting a duplicate name issue.  I believe we have a caching issue where this job name may already exist but we are unable to see it on the web services status page.
Is there a data services repository database table where I can find these web services jobs listed and clean it up from the backend?

There is no option there that shows me if it is being used as a web service.  Here is my issue with some screen shots.
I look at my current web service enabled jobs looking for B_JOB_CP_MDR_to_GW_EMP but it is not in the list.
I attempt to add it from repository DWXDS9
It throws an error and tells me there is already a web service with this name...
Now there has got to be an internal data services table somewhere that has this job listed as a web service.  I am just trying to figure out what that table may be to determine if we can do some type of cleanup on it so we can add this job again as a web service (so it is visible to us).

  • Error Event ID 11 The KDC encountered duplicate names while processing a Kerberos authentication request.

I've been noticing The Error with event ID 11 popping up a lot on our domain controllers:
The KDC encountered duplicate names while processing a Kerberos authentication request.
When running setspn -X it says that it found 111 groups of duplicate SPNs. However, when going through the list, it references domain service accounts that are used to run our SQL Server services. We have about 50 remote locations and each of them has 3
machines participating in a SQL mirror (principal, mirror, witness) and they all run the SQL Server service on the same account (1 account per location).
We haven't experienced any issues at all but I was wondering if this could cause problems or if we are straying from best practice. Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

I believe what you should do to follow best practice is to provide unique SPNs for each SQL server, which will also provide increased security, and to do that you must create individual service account for each SQL server so it can associate that
    account with that server's SPN.

  • Artist show in recently added but not in artist list

I have an imac, early 2012 model with the most recent updates (Maverick I think it's called). And an iphone 4S with the most recent update.
I recently added two cd's into iTunes. One cd shows the artist and all info in the artist list. The other does not show in the artist list, but Does show in recently added, complete with all info. This cd was downloaded (and paid for) from the Artists website as an mp3 320. In order to put it on my iphone, I had to make a playlist and add that to the iphone. I also tried making an AAC version, but that didn't help. Any ideas why this might be?
Btw, all the artist info etc... populated on it's own and it looks like All the files imported.

    Hi,
I had the same trouble, and tried various things including a restore from back-up, with no success.
I then had a closer look at the "Get Info" section of the troubled artist.
The 'Artist Name' and 'Album Name' were correctly defined in the 'Info' tab ,
howerver, in the 'Options' tab I notied that the 'Part of a Compilation' dropdown box
was set to "Yes".  So, I changed this to "No" and left the check box selected, and then clicked "OK".
I re-checked the 'Get Info/Options' part again to ensure the change had taken affect(which it had).
I then disconnected and reconnected my Iphone 5 followed by a "SYNC"  which successfully applied
the above changes to my phone and hence solved the problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • Artist list not showing all tracks by same (iOS 5.01)

    Hi
For some reason, I cannot see all the tracks by a particular artist when I select the "Artist" view.
When browsing through the list of songs, or albums, or playsists, the tracks appear, listed with the correct (exact) artist name.
Similarly, I have a few compilations, which have the album artist listed as "various". This casues the tracks to be listed under artist "various" rather than the ACTUAL artist in the artist view under Music in the iPhone, though it and the above are listed correctly on iTunes on my mac.

I don't know if you have resolved this with your iPhone/iPod Touch running iOS5, but I thought I would share a revelation for anyone who tried the "compilation" deselect process and didn't get the desired results...
What I discovered was that somehow during the upgrade to iOS5, my iTunes decided to deselect the "Sync Music" tab under my device preferences in iTunes. So when I was synching my iPhone, it would transfer songs from my phone (where almost all of my purchases are made) to my iTunes, but I never noticed that new information from iTunes was getting back to my phone. After I selected the "Sync Music" tab, it warned me that my iPhone was paired to a different iTunes account (which is impossible since I only have one) and would erase and resync all of the data. But once I let it do that, all of the songs were found under the artist tab on the iPhone.
    Hope this helps!
