Duplicate Networks Being Broadcast from my WRT54G (kind of)

When I search for networks to connect to I see both my SSID/secured network (despite broadcast of SSID being turned off) and I see an unnamed/unsecured network being broadcast with the same router MAC address.  I'm positive that these are the same network, as I was using channel 11 and changed it to use channel 1 and both of these networks now show channel 1.
I have the latest firmware for my WRT54G ver.3 router and I've reset everything to factory defaults and reconfigured the router from scratch and it still broadcasts 2 networks.  Any idea why?
Thanks!

MAC addresses can be faked.  Are you sure the unnamed/unsecured network is not coming from your neighbor?
As far as I know, there is no way a WRT54G can generate two different networks at the same time.  Certainly, it is possible that software might give a network a double listing, but it should not be listed as both secured and unsecured.
In some systems, "ghost" network listings can stick around for a while.  They generally represent some of the "test" configurations you had, before you reached your final network settings.  These networks do not exist anymore, but they continue to be listed.
To get rid of them do the following:
Give your router a new unique SSID.  Do not use "linksys".
Set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled".   (Note:  I used to recommend setting SSID Broadcast to disabled, for security reasons, but newer cracking methods have made this old trick useless.  Also, broadcasting your SSID makes it easier for your computer to find and lock on to your router's signal.)
Now go to your computer, to "Preferred Networks".  Delete the network with your old SSID.  Delete all networks with SSID "linksys".  While you are there, delete any other networks that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use.
Reboot your entire system.
Now reconnect wirelessly to your router.  If you have trouble, go back to "Preferred Networks" and enter your new SSID, encryption method (if any), and key (if any).  (Note:  if you are using WEP, be sure to enter WEP "key 1", not the passphrase)
Now recheck for available networks.  Be sure to click on the "Refresh" button.  The unexplained networks should be gone.
If you still have unexplained networks, then you need to check other sources:
1)  A wireless computer with the wireless card set to "Ad-Hoc" mode.  (Did somebody from school loan your child a computer?)
2)  Another wireless router plugged in. (Is you child having a LAN party?)
3)  Your neighbor (or that guy parked in front of your house!)  has a network with the same name and a fake MAC address.
Hope this helps.
Let me know how things turn out for you.

  • Duplicate rows being eliminated from OBIEE reports...

    Hi,
Duplicate rows are being eliminated from OBIEE reports even though I have not specified the 'DISTINCT' clause under the advanced tab of the answers request.
I read somewhere that this is a bug and the only solution is to include the table key column.
Please let me know if this is correct or if there is another solutiuon to prevent this issue.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi user11935561,
I've also noticed this too. And I did one of two things in the past:
    1) Yes, when applicable, I've added a unique identifier to the report so that duplicates were shown.
    2) Sometimes when I hit this I had a situation of a few dimensions in a report (lets say CUSTOMER and PRODUCT) and a measure (let's say sales $). If the customer 1 bought product A at $10, and he bought it on two different days, I was only seeing the DISTINCT record coming through, i.e. I was only seeing CUSTOMER 1 PROD A $10 instead of $20. Then I went into the RPD and changed the aggregation rule of Sales $ from None to SUM. The sum would force a group by get the correct information back from the RPD. So make sure you have your aggregate measures defined in the RPD and that should help you get around some of these issues.
    Hope this helps!

  • Rename/Reset Network Being Broadcast

I have a desktop iMac with a broadcasting wireless network. I did not set up the network myself, my cousin was visiting and wanted his Macbook to work so he set it up himself, and I do not know the password for accessing the network. Of course, he can't remember it either. My computer is receiving an internet signal through cable, but I want to be able to send out a wireless signal for laptop use.
I would like to reset/rename the network to something else. I have figured out how to create a temporary network, but when I restart or the computer sleeps, then my newly created network goes away completely. I'm not very savvy with the wireless, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks! ;o)

Hmm...from the way I understood it, the wireless router is inside the machine, part of the programming-not an accessory or add on.
it's hardware, a wireless card (and the modem) built into the casing.
So you're saying maybe I would need to physically reset something, as in open the back of this puppy up and tinker?
no. for example, Apple bases stations come with a reset button @ the back of the device. depending on your modem/router combo, there might be something similar. maybe you can restore your device using a software command. do you still have the manual ?

  • No BT FON or BT OpenZone SSID being broadcast from...

I've been using BT for just under a year now. When I first installed my HomeHub2 I had 3 SSIDs broadcast; my own private, BT FON and BT OpenZone.  For some reason I now only have my own private SSID available and I can seem to get BT FON available again.
I've tried opting out of BT FON and then opting back in again to no avail. I've also tried a full reset of the HomeHub followed by an opt out/in, but no change.
Can anyone explain why I've lost the ability to use BT FON and OpenZone. It was quite useful if friends visited and saved them using my monthly bandwidth allowance.

    Hi Spillpot
I can check and see what status we have your for your FON opt in/out.
Could you drop me in an email please with your BT account and telephone number along with a link back to this thread.

  • Duplicate networks

After attempting to change the network channel on my local area network (using a TC as the router, and prompted by an Australian Mac World tip for reducing interference from nearby networks) I find that I have somehow duplicated the network, as indicated by the network name appearing in the list of available networks that appears under the airport symbol. I can see no way of deleting one of the network connections. Can anyone advise me as what I should do next>

Hi Bob, thanks for the response. That problem seems to have resolved itself: suddenly there is no duplicate network.
However, I have the following residual issue in that I can't seem to get the network to extend from a TC , which I use as the base station and have connected directly to the modem. Supposedly on the same network is an older airport express that is intended to be used to extend the network and which is connected to a Sonos amplifier.
When I open the AirPort Utility, with the network selected being my usual home network, the TC appears, with its green light on, but the airport extreme shows up with an amber light and says it has default settings. When I attempt to set up the AE it offers only the option of creating a wireless network or participating in a WDS network, but not extend a network.
The TC settings are: create a wireless network and the box allowing the network to be extended is ticked. I have tried using the reset button on the AE, rebooting the two computers on the network but with no effect. In addition, a new network has appeared named Apple Network F2364. On this network only the AE appears in AirPort Utility and still with an orange indicator.
Is there a way of deleting this unwanted network and getting the AE where it belongs on the base network? Whilst the base network continues to provide an internet connection, the AE no longer provides the link to the Sonos system that it used to do. The extended network worked well until I attempted to alter the channel for the network in order to see if interference could be reduced. In particular, why has the option of extending the network suddenly disappeared?

  • How do I duplicate all my data from my existing Macbook to a new Macbook that I purchased last night?

How do I duplicate all my data from my existing Macbook to a new Macbook?

Easiest way is to connect them together and use Migration Assistant (which comes with all Macs).
To connect them, use one of the following:
    ethernet cable
    firewire cable
Apple Thunderbolt-Firewire Adapter + firewire cable (if your new Mac has Thunderbolt but your old Mac has FireWire)
thunderbolt cable (if both Macs have Thunderbolt)
    network (wired or wireless)
Do not use a USB cable!

  • My MBP doesn't remember my Time Capsule wireless network when waking from sleep

My MBP (OS 10.5.8) doesn't remember my Time Capsule wireless network when waking from sleep.  Thus, every time my MBP wakes from sleep, I need to select the Airport icon in the upper menu bar, select "Join other network", enter SSID and password.  This is very cumbersome.  And, I never had this problem when I was using the ISP's provided wireless router/gateway/DSL modem. Adding the Time Capsule and using it to generate the wireless network has introduced this problem.
It appears that this problem has to do with the hidden SSID.  I don't need the lecture on how hidden SSID provides no serious security benefit.  That's why I have the WPA2 encryption.  I'm interested in a solution that will allow the Time Capsule to generate the wireless network, maintain a hidden SSID, continue to use WPA2 encryption, but have my MBP recognzie and autoconnect to this network.
    Solutions I've alread tried:
    1. Open Network Preferences
    2. Select Airport from left hand column (and ensure Airport is at top of that list)
    3.  Select Advanced
    4.  Delete all Preferred Networks.
    5.  Apply settings.
    6.  Restart computer
    7.  Return to Network Preferences and from Advanced page, manually add my network with hidden SSID and WPA2 password
This solution works fine as long as I don't take my computer elsewhere and connect to another network.  As soon as my preferred networks list gets another network, my MBP stops finding my TC network.  Since I take my laptop to a lot of places (it's a laptop, after all...) this is a problem.
As I say, prior to adding the TC on my network (and using it to generate the wireless network), my MBP had no problem keeping 50+ preferred network names/passwords in the Preferred Network list, but always automatically finding/connecting to my home network without the need to "Join other network."  Thus, I assume the problem lies with the Time Capsule.
    Any ideas?

LaPastenague, thanks for weighing in.  Didn't know that the hidden SSID capability was not IEEE standardized, and thus different devices will handle hidden SSID differently.  With my admittedly limited knowledge of how SSID/hidden SSID works, I'm still a little confused as to why my MBP would remember the generic router/gateway's hidden network, but struggle with the TC's hidden network.
To my knowledge, when an SSID is broadcast by a base station (Airport, wireless gateway, etc.), a connecting device (like a laptop, iPad, etc.) detects this broadcast--this would be a passive reception of this SSID signal.
When an SSID is hidden, the base station does not broadcast its identification.  Rather, a connecting device must transmit the name, and when the base station recognizes the broadcast, the connection is made. That's what you do when you select "Join another network" and manually enter the SSID.
The idea with OS X's Network Preferences is that these steps, whether for hidden networks or broadcast SSIDs, become automated.
Where is the potential for a different chipset between the TC and the previously used wireless router/gateway to alter this functionality?  Shouldn't the selection of an SSID by the MBP to broadcast to seek for a base station be a function solely on the MBP?  And once broadcast by the MBP, the TC should detect and reply?
Basically, the MBP can connect to the hidden TC manually just fine.  The MBP can connect to the old setup automatically just fine.  The MBP cannot connect to the TC automatically.  Aren't these automatic connection functions solely on the MBP?
I'll try un-hiding the network and re-verifying that the problem is exclusively with the hidden network.

  • Can I Stop my Images from being Copied from my Web Pages

On some websites I visit, it prevents you from right clicking on the image and saving it. A message pops up saying the image cannot be copied.
Would any of you kind folk know of a way I can stop my images from being saved from my Dreamweaver web pages?
Many thanks in advance for your anticipated help!

I asked a question. Hans was kind enough to give me a solution, and for that I thank him! I have also learned a little more in the process!
We have already established that the solution stops people right clicking on an image and saving the image (be it in Windows Explorer or not), but it has also been established that it is by no means a fool proof way of protecting images and that there are other ways of copying images from a webpage. However, it is another level of protection.
Unfortunately, I do not want to watermark my images as I do not like looking as watermarked images myself. I also downsize my images for the web. I was just looking for another level of protection.
    Thanks for the input anyway!

  • I am being blocked from my "favorites"on my iPad 2 with the following....... You are not authorized to open this file. What do I need to do

I'm being blocked from my favorites on my iPad 2 with the following........... You are not authorized to open this file. What do I do?

I'm not sure whether you have tried the "usual" things:
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Command+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
    * Firefox menu > Preferences > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * classic Tools menu > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?
In case one of your extensions is involved, could you test the page in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run
After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset).
    Any difference?

  • WLC and syslog broadcast from AP

    Hello,
my wlc analyzer keep on informing me about syslog messages sent in broadcast from my APs.
how can I solve this problem?
    thanks
    Johnny

by default, the LAPs send log infos to the broadcast address, 255.255.255.255. you should set this to your syslog-server, so that can be unicasted.
config ap syslog host global 1.2.3.4
otherwise your LAP-network will be flooded with broadcasts if something odd happens.
see also "Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) Configuration Best Practices" for details on this hint and other things that you possibly "should set".

  • When does a mountet network drive goes from green to red in colour due to low disk space?

    Hi,
I have a number of network shares on MS 2008 R2 servers, that my users have mountet on their Win7 PC's.
What is the limit for when a mountet network drive goes from green to red on the users PC, due to
    low disk space.
My guess is below 10% but I can not
    find any confirmation of this
    anywhere online
    Kind regards,

    Hi,
As you mentioned, the red bar will display when the drive has less than 10% space.

  • Keeping photos from being deleted from folders

I am wondering if there is a way to keep photos from being deleted from a folder if they're deleted from the library, like some kind of safeguard. Here is my dilema: I import, say, 50 photos from shooting a band. I choose 5 of those 50 to add to my 'portfolio' album, and no longer need all 50 photos in my library, as they take up much space. So, I select all 50 photos as a group in the library and delete them, but lose the 5 that I put in the 'portfolio' folder. Is there any better way to clean up my library, and not lose the portfolio pictures, short of going one by one and deleting only the ones from the library that I know I don't want to keep? Any imput is greatly appreciated. Thank you all.

    Hi chado404,
The albums only point to the photos within them, meaning if you delete from the library you are also deleting any of those photos from the album also.
If you take these 50 photos in a photo shoot, do your deleting first then put the remainder in an album. To help you, you can give the photos you want to keep a star rating. When you are done, select all as a group, then command click on the photos with the star rating to de-select just those, then delete the rest.

  • How to get network attached folders from Frontend?

    Hi,
I'm developing a dialog which allows to mass-import files from harddisk or any network attached folders.
On my screen is an alv_tree on the left side which shows the hierarchie and where you can select the required files via checkbox and an alv_grid on the right which shows the selection for Import.
I'm using the GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICE class and am currently checking for all drive-letters (A:, B:, C:, ...) if the path exists and it works fine for all drives that are shown in my workplace.
(By the way I don't like this approach, I would prefer a method which delivers all paths to the mounted drives and devices, if you know one, please let me know)
The only problem is that the network attached folders in "my network places" are variable and therefor I can't find them by using the DIRECTORY_EXIST method because I can't forecast what their names will be.
    So my question is:
Is there a way to get a list of all network attached folders from the frontend?
    Thanks in advance!
    Kind regards,
    Maximilian

...is the solution that difficult or is there none?
    I'm still hoping!
    Kind regards,
    Maximilian

  • I cannot get wi-fi on my iphone - says no wi-fi and is not highlighted despite wireless networks being available

    HELP!
i cannot get wi-fi on my iphone - says no wi-fi and is not highlighted despite wireless networks being available

Hi, my iPhone 4S had a similar problem in February 2011, after several attempts to revive it, and nothing has worked, as I was traveling to the U.S. in May, and was still under warranty at no cost to me changed.
But now a year later the new phone looks similar to make a software upgrade problem. The WiFi only works to no more than 2 meters from the antenna WiFi, then away more disconnects, not a router problem as all other wireless devices will work fine as ever. What happened? my phone will have lost its antenna gain?. I live in Argentina there is no Apple Store here, I do not travel to the U.S., from what I saw on the website of apple change the phone for an equal (which will surely have the same problem) miss u $ s 200. I am really disillusioned with Iphone. I think it must have been damaged wifi antenna that receives wifi signal but low sensitivity or a lot, will this model of Iphone has a general problem with any batch of antennas?, because I happened on 2 different phones
