Duplicate/phantom folders in Bridge

I'm having a little trouble believing this is a Bridge problem, but its the only place these show up, so...
Windows 7, 64-bit, CS6 13.0.1, LR4, Bridge 5.0.2.4
I do my organizing in Lightroom 4.  And recently, I've reorganized some files in folders, and RENAMED folders in Lightroom.  If you use Lightroom you're probably aware of how bothersome it is to resync everything, so it's easier just to do the fiddling and renaming there.
BUT, I still use Bridge for a variety of things.
Recently in Bridge (within the last couple days is the first time I've seen it), I'm getting sort-of duplicate folders in bridge.  My image structure looks like
IMG_024_20070331 - so it's the 24th folder of images, and the date of the LAST image is 3/31/2007
If I reorganize and move files, I may rename the folder IMG_024_20070413 so it's STILL the 24th folder and the last image is now from 4/13/2007
Its a simple system and it makes it easy to find things when I'm searching 'cause I usually know the date or approximate date...
BUT, even though Windows Explorer KNOWS there's only 1 folder - IMG_024_20070413, as does Lightroom, xplorer2, and as near as I can tell, every other piece of software on the system,
Bridge, still shows IMG_024_20070331 as well as IMG_024_20070413...
I have a half dozen of these folders where Bridge is still showing the old folder as well as the renamed one...........
I've compacted cache.  I've FLUSHED cache.  I've rebooted and completely DELETED the entire fold structure on the partition that holds nothing BUT cache.
I've shutdown and restarted Bridge and pretty much everything else I can think of.
Is there somewhere that Bridge keeps additional information I need to delete?  Is there something I need to refresh?  And I've been renaming these folders intermittently for the last couple months.  WHY is it only showing up now and only with the last few folders?  The update checker SAYS I'm current at 5.0.2.4, but I don't know when it got updated...
What am I missing?

Workflow...  A couple weeks ago I decided it was time to reload from scratch, so I re-installed Windows 7.  Which meant re-installing Photoshop and all that stuff.  Which meant it did all the updates.
I've been doing other stuff, so I'm not sure I've been in Bridge where I'd have noticed the problem in the last week or so, which is about how long I've had all the new installs up and running...
So, it's a brute force "fix", but I opened Bridge and dithe "reset your preferences" thing.  Then immediately un-installed all the Photoshop stuff and re-installed all the Photoshop stuff.  When I restarted Bridge I pointed the cache at a different partition......
I have NO idea WHICH thing fixed it, but no more phantom folders...  Curt, your idea about workflow finally got me thinking WHY was I only seeing recent folders as phantoms rather than ALL the ones I'd fiddled with...  And the ones I WAS seeing were all recent - in the last week or so.  So WHY it'd make any difference I don't know, but it appears to be happy again.  I'll try fiddling with stuff in Lightroom, make sure no new phantom folders show up, then if it's good I"ll point things back to the "cache" partition...
Thanks for your help...

  • Duplicate Italic Keywords in Bridge

    You asked....
In the keyword panel,I have the same keyword in several places in the hierarchy. I think some came in as legacy keywords, and others, I inadvertently created the same keyword twice. These duplicates appear in different parts of the whole keyword list. Now so I don't have all those confusing duplicates, and so I can find stuff, I would like to delete the extra keywords. The duplicates appear in italics. I can make them persistent, but I can't get rid of them. I've tried all sorts of things like finding all the files with the keyword in question, manually deleting the words and then re entering. I can delete the words, but they will magically reappear. What I want to do is consolidate multiple, duplicate kewords. Is that possible? Any ideas? Thanks
Here is the summary of details and how to fix this.
When you create keywords in Bridge, the metadata is stored in the xmp file in unicode 8 format.
While that sounds like software techno babble, a point emerges.
When Bridge reads the xmp file it reports on keywords that already exist within your own keyword library and this is indicated by a floating italic keyword.
While this does not harm anything, it is a mess to read and organize.
    Here is the fix.
You must follow these steps EXACTLY or you may create the need to re-keword files.
    1. Create a new UNIQUE keyword. I suggest capital "AAAA" (no quotes) since this places the keyword at the very top of your keywords.
    2. Do a Find with the keyword of interest. (typically one of the italic keywords that appear but choose the keyword in your Keyword Library and Not the italic keyword)
    3. Once the files are found, check the keyword in the Filter panel ON THE LEFT side of the Bridge screen where the keyword lists appear. (your Keyword Library is the panel on the right of the screen)
    4. Select ALL in the browser window.
    5. On the right side of the screen in the Keyword Library apply "AAAA" (or unique keyword of your choice) to the selected files. (no quotes) WAIT!.... for Bridge to COMPLETELY finish writing the metadata. (thousands of files can take some time, just watch the lower left progress indicator carefully!!!! and if you have tens of thousands consider using this technique to individual folders rather than entire root directories BE WISE!.... too many files can run Bridge out of memory and create a new problem)
    6. On the left side of the screen in the Filter keyword lists panel, check AAAA.
    7. On the right side of the screen in the keywords library panel navigate to where you would prefer to have the duplicate keyword located just so you know where it is.... Do NOT apply.
    8. On the right side of the screen where the italic duplicate keyword appears (alphabetically as it works out) uncheck the duplicate italic keyword and WAIT for bridge to COMPLETELY finish erasing the italic keyword.
    Here's the trick.
What you have done is made a unique selection based a unique find and applied the unique keyword AAAA and have instructed Bridge to show all files within the unique search that NOW have the keyword AAAA and have erased the keyword that you used to do a Find, ie, the duplicate. (you will see that the unique word you used to do the Find will now be italic and "0" in the Filter keywords lists on the left side of the screen.
All the photos will remain selected because they are now identified by AAAA.
    Now for the next step.
    9. In the Keyword Library on the right side of the screen, Navigate to the place where you wish the duplicate keyword to be located in step 7.
    10. Check the keyword and apply the keyword from the place where you want it (step 7) and WAIT for Bridge to COMPLETELY finish writing the metadata keyword. (the keyword lists on the left will no longer be italic and will be the exact number of files you selected)
    11. IMPORTANT!!!!!...... now uncheck AAAA in the keyword library to remove AAAA from the Filter keyword lists on the left. YOU MUST DO THIS AND NOT FORGET.
(verify that AAAA is now italic and has "0" files)
Believe it or not, you are done!
You have now removed the italic keyword on the right permanently.
Oddly enough, you won't see the italic keyword on the right go away, why is that you ask?
The italic duplicate keyword you see is in Ram and will not go away until you Quit and ReLaunch Bridge.
Like magic, the duplicate italic keyword has vanished.
You must repeat this technique for EVERY file that has a duplicate keyword whether you created it or not otherwise the duplicate italic keyword will once again reappear.
I VERY STRONGLY SUGGEST.... that you repeat these steps For ONE duplicate keyword Find at a time, in fact I cannot suggest this strongly enough. One Keyword At A Time.
While you can use this technique for more than one keyword at a time, you will only cause more work as you go through this process.
Sound complicated?..... its not..... do this once or twice and see that it is easier done than said.
    PS
I have more than a million files keyworded and had to use this technique myself. (I devised this technique out of pure necessity and if followed and understood.... it works perfectly)

  • Copyright notice to all folders in Bridge CS4

Hello, everyone.  I also posted this in the Bridge forum, but I think it belongs here.
I entered a copyright notice in the field, under Description, and was able to copy this metadata to all the images in the same folder.
I'm trying to understand how to place this copyright notice to all the other file folders within Bridge CS4, without having to enter it again, in that field.
How might I go about accomplishing that task?
    Thanks.
    Alan

You can use a Metadata template to append information.
I am not at my PS machine right now but the instructions are in the Help files.

I would like to duplicate the folders and apps that I have set up on my iPhone to my iPad.  Is there a quick way of doing this without going through the whole process again manually?

You can restore your iPad with your iPhone backup but items that are iPhone only will not transfer.  It should recreate all your folders.  It can't hurt anything to try.

  • Why the duplicate Applications folders and which one(s) can I trash?

I've tried to disregard the duplicate Applications folders on my HD and double Mail programs in my dock but would like to trash any I don't need (I'm the only user of my machine). I see that there's an Applications folder in my HD icon (under "Devices"); an Applications folder in my Finder window (under "Places"), and an Applications folder accessible by clicking on my name in the Finder window (also under "Places"). Although it appears there are 3 Applications folders / Mail programs, a search in Finder suggests there are actually 2: one is traceable to HD (hard disk); the other is traceable to my name. Which of these is "safe" to trash? (I don't understand why my Finder must contain two Applications folders--frequently resulting in the appearance of duplicate Mail programs in my dock. Any clarification/suggestions appreciated. Cap

Thanks. That helps me with the concept, and I see that there can only be one "real" Applications folder which is under Devices and labeled Macintosh HD. Perhaps what I'm trying to say is that the below that, in the Places area, the programs in the "Applications" of my "Home Folder" (the little house followed by my name) don't agree with the programs in the "Applications" folder right underneath it. The latter Applications Folder agrees with the one on my Hard Drive, it has the new iTunes program, etc. whereas the programs in the Applications Folder of my Home Folder are different (the old iTunes program, etc.). I guess I'm saying that the Applications Folders of my Hard Drive and of my Home Folder are at odds. I'm simply going to try following your idea--drag the Applications Folder from my Home Folder onto the desktop, replace it with the Applications Folder from my Hard Drive, then go through the eternity of trashing the old Home Folder Applications Folder
that will by now be copied on my Desktop. (Wish I new of a faster way of trashing the many programs.) I'll let you know if it works. Thanks again, Cap

  • Phantom folders now corrupted database

I've had the phantom folders problem that has been reported elsewhere, since this happened, I now see all sorts of DB errors in the logs...
    Oct 6 00:58:25 mail ctl_cyrusdb[21899]: DBERROR db4: DBENV->logflush: LSN of 1/22262 past current end-of-log of 1/1099
Oct 6 00:58:25 mail ctl_cyrusdb[21899]: DBERROR db4: Database environment corrupt; the wrong log files may have been removed or incompatible database files imported from another environment
What's odd about this is that I can do a reconstruct in Server Admin, and they checkpoint fine for awhile, then things go bad....any ideas on why?

One other point: the corruption was from a bad mail queue, from spam that was bouncing. Once that problem with fixed, the SirAdmin tool did the trick.

  • Phantom folders after HD format and clean osx install

I was having frequent checksum and other misc errors while trying to mount DMGs or install programs so i decided to format my drive and do a clean install of snow leopard.
After the format and clean install of snow leopard, I did the following..
    Join my wi-fi network
    Run software update
    Installed Xcode
Installed macports, ruby19, python, scala, macruby
installed bbedit, textmate, yojimbo, coda, transmit, omniplan, omnigraffle, omnifocus
    Run mobileme sync
and then i discovered the following folders in my application folder.
    Access Music
    Adobe Bridge CS5.
These folders used to be in my applications folder along with 100+ other applications before I formatted and installed snow leopard.
None of the applications I installed, after snow leopard are dependent or related to these 2 phantom apps even remotely.
    How could this have happened?
I'm not on drugs, I've developed software for over 25 years and I'm currently an Architect for financial site that serves millions of users well, so I guess I'm not a complete idiot and I'm also not senile. I'm not 40 yet
Can someone offer an explanation for this? The apple tech I mentioned this to, thought I was a moron as I expected he would. He did find issues with my drive using Disk Warrior though even though disk utility and tech tool had found nothing after several runs.

I'm sorry you had that experience with the Apple tech.
Files still remain on the hard drive even after a format if not done with several passes
If you formatted in Disk Utility or used Disk Utility to format, the data that was formatted would be converted into "Free Space" and placed near the end of the drive. There are security options in Disc Utility that prevent this from happening.
Most likely the reason was those folders remained was because the "Free Space" was not wiped. Disc Warrior, a data recovery software was able to locate more files because of this. It does a great job of recovering deleted or formatted data.
I hope this answers your question.

  • How do I duplicate the folders in Mail on my Mac to Mail in iCloud?

I have set up a series of folders in Mail on my Mac where I file all of my emails.
During the day I often access Mail on a PC via iCloud and there are no folders set up on my iCloud version.
Is it possible to duplicate my folder set up from Mail on my Mac to Mail on iCloud and to have changes made on one (e.g. messages deleted, new folders raised etc.) reflected on the other?

You should create your mail folders on the iCloud server (under ICLOUD in Mail), not locally on your Mac (under ON MY MAC) for them to show up on other devices and at iCloud.com.
Anything stored locally on your Mac only exists on that specific Mac so leave all your mail on the server and organise it there.

  • Is there a way to display the size of a folder or group of folders in Bridge?

In windows it is easy to click on any folder and see the size of it's contents, whether it is a single folder or contains subfolders.  This doesn't seem possible as far as I can see in Bridge.  The only way I can see to see the size of a folder is to select all files in the folder and then it will display the size. Seems quite a clunky way or working and is frustrating when you want to see the size of a folder containing sub folders.  Strange for a program which is supposed to make managing files easier.  However, I'm hoping that there is a way to do this and I've not discovered it yet.
If anyone knows of a way to click on any folder and display it's contents (with or without subfolders) without having to select all files, I would greatly appreciate them sharing it.
    Many thanks,
    Julie

In the Folders Tab, right click on  folder  then click Reveal in Explorer. This will open an Explorer window with the folder selected.  In Explorer you can right click > Properties or navigate to whatever you want to measure.

  • Problem Moving Images Between Folders In Bridge (Windows 7 Professional)

I have just bought a new computer with Windows 7 installed. I now also have Adobe CS5 Design Premium installed.
When I try to MOVE or DRAG and DROP an image from one folder to another using Adobe Bridge I get the following error message:
"The operation cannot be completed because you don't have sufficient permissions"
When I try the same thing in Windows Explorer it tells me that I need Administrator Permission. I click OK and it works in that programme.I am actually the Administrator
Can anybody tell me how I can configure Bridge to undertake this task please.
    Many thanks in anticipation
    Adrian

    Dear friends
To my great relief I have now sorted this issue and offer the following as the Correct Answer. My sincere and grateful thanks go to Curt and Yammer, above, who have helped me so much in sorting this Windows 7 issue which is clearly very relevant to Bridge users also. Any slowness to grasp what they have been saying is down to me!
The key to solving this issue lies is understanding that in terms of Windows 7 Security, every internal or external hard drive, plus folders, sub-folders and files thereon has an OWNER. Also each OWNER has a certain level of PERMISSION to do things such as moving files to a different folder, deleting or re-naming them etc. If you try to do things that you don't currently have Permission to do, that is when you get an ‘Access Denied’ error message. Also your system has an Admistrator or Administrators and at the outset you need to ensure through the Control Panel that you are listed as one of them. .
If, like me, you didn't realise these things, (and why would you if Microsoft or your computer or hard drive suppliers couldn't be bothered to really make sure you knew about them), then trying to fathom the ‘Access Denied’ problem becomes a stressful and frustrating nightmare as I can testify having spent a week at it!
The steps that I took to resolve the issue and which I believe now constitute the 'Correct Answer' are as follows:
First make sure that you have Administrator rights on your system via the Control Panel
Next ‘right click’ on the Drive whose files you want to gain full access to, for example the drive that your pictures are stored on, and click on 'Properties'.
Under the Security tab you will see a list of Groups and Users on this drive and the Permissions that they have to do things.
Before doing anything to edit these Permissions, first click on the Advanced button. This opens another window with a tab showing the Owner of this drive.
Click on the Owner tab and if you are not already listed as the owner, make yourself the owner by selecting your name from the list. I believe it should appear there if you are an admistrator or user. (In my case at this stage the owner was initially shown as an obscure string of numbers and letters which I believe identified the drive when it was connected to the lap top I was using before I upgraded my machine)
Now be sure to check the box that says "Replace Owner on Subcontainers and Objects" and the click Apply. On completion of this step, the drive in question and all the folders, subfolders and files thereon should now be 'owned' by you. You could check this out by right clicking on a particular folder then clicking Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner. Your name should appear. So far so simples!
Now go back to the Security Tab for your drive (Step 2 / 3 above) and look at the Permissions you currently have. Your aim now is to allow yourself 'Full Control.' If you don’t currently have this level of permission click Edit, select your name on the list, check ‘Full Control’ and 'Apply' the change.
I think I'm right in saying that at this point whilst still working in the Drive directory you are now given the option of ticking boxes which allow you to, in effect, cascade the permission you have just granted yourself to all the files and folders on that drive. Tick the box to allow this and Windows should then take care of the rest.If I'm not quite correct here then in my particular case, for example, all my images were stored on my external drive. The top level, or 'parent' folder in which all my pictures could be found was the 'My Pictures' folder and I had created a number of folders and subfolders ('child ' folders) within that folder. The permissions I gave to the Parent folder – My Pictures – were cascaded down through the Child folders.
On completion of the above step I tested the result in Windows Explorer by dragging a few files back and forth between folders and it now worked perfectly - I was now able to move / delete / rename etc all files without now getting the dreaded access denied message. What a sense of relief! This meant that I could now open Bridge normally rather than having to right click it and 'Run As Admistrator' - albeit that is a very useful thing to do until you get the problem sorted as described.
Somebody said to me the other night that when you buy a car you buy it to enjoy the drive, not to have to tinker with the engine. Microsoft and companies that supply and install Windows 7 on new computers please take note!

  • File printing and icons for folders in Bridge CS5 - too small to read

Got CS5 and am trying to use Bridge. The folders are too small to read and the print with them too small. The slider at the bottom of the page enlarges the space but the files and printing stay the same size. If I open one the images will enlarge with the slider but I don't want to waste time opening each file to see what is in them. I want to be able to read wha the file is and open the right one first try.
Tried calling "tech support" Those jackasses can't speak English. On hold for 3 hours overall after getting someone, getting cut off and having to call again. I hope Pakistan nukes India and solves that problem.
When I finally got through the guy told me my Photoshop copy was not registered. Funny, it was last week when it had problems. Then I try changing the pasword and it says it did it, but won't accept it.
    I hate computers.
So, anyone know how to get this damn probram to make the folders and printing big enough to read without my having to get up to the screen with a magnifying glass like Sherlock Holmes? The screen is a 22inch graphic arts monitor and I don't have this problem with any other programs. Not Breezebrowser, Not Auto Pano Pro, not Photo Mechanic. Just Bridge with this overpriced and overhyped photoshiz crap.

Small, and uncustomizable, fonts has been a com
    plaint in PhotoShop also.
Send in a bug report, they do read those, and maybe if enough users complain they will modify the program.

  • Fixing duplicate/triplicate folders and songs in itunes music folder

The file structure of my music has gotten out of control.
I keep all of my music on a lacie external drive.
I think i used to import music into itunes incorrectly and
there ended up being duplicates of files and folders.
for some artists, i have seven folders that have between
them (typically in an illogical order) all of the music i
    have for that artist.
is there a simple fix for reorganizing everything without
painstakingly going through every artist and every folder?
    please help!

My music files were created long befor I had itunes, but I have been usinfitunes for about 10 months. I recently noticed that my music file has gone from about 3,500 tracks to almost 9,000 tracks the change being duplicates. itunes will identify the duplicates but does not have the capability to clean up the database.
getting rid of about 5,000 duplicates is going to be a giant task and before I do it I would like to know how it happened and be comfortable it won't happen again. I just checked my preferences and I have selected "keep ... music folder organized".
My music data base is on an external hard drive and part of a home network. Sometimes I have added music from various computers on the network. when I want to update the library on one of the other computers I have erased all music in the library and then added the music data base to the itunes on the computer attached to the external hard drive. Is that where the duplication takes place?

  • JUST finding duplicate files/folders

Yes, I did my research.  Solutions are dated or otherwise un-satisfactory.  Does anyone know of a CURRENT app. that will find duplicte files and folders (preferably by name, not necessarily size) and list them without immediately sending something to the trash?  What I need it for is this:  I have an external hard drive that I've manually backed things up to over the years, and there are different "versions" of the same files.  I want to get rid of the older ones and keep the most updated ones.  Does that make sense?  If you need more info, ask.  Anybody got an idea?

Yeah, unfortunately that was how the action was programmed - to only accept two folders to compare at a time.
Honestly, I re-reviewed your earlier posts, and what you want is the most recent version of the files right?
As you have 4 folders, then what I think you should do is the following:
    1. First select the first two folders and run the below workflow:
What this will do is synch both of them so that the most recent files are there. Then all you have to do is delete one of them as they will be DUPLICATES.
    2. Then select the OTHER TWO FOLDERS with the same workflow above and sync them. Then delete one of the folders.
    3. Now you only have two folders left to sync. Run the workflow on those two folders and delete one of them.
There you go, and you will end up with ONE folder that has all the most recent versions of the files.
You should test it first, but it should work.
    Good luck.
