Duplicate photo, events, and album questions...

I'm trying to better understand my iPhoto album and how to clean it up so I have a few questions that should help me out.
1) When deleting events, do the photos in those events get deleted from the library and from any albums they are in?
2) I am finding there are many duplicates spread out across many events, when I only imported those photos from my phone once. What's the best way to import photos so I don't end up with duplicates?
3) Is there any way to not have any events?
4) When importing, does iPhoto split photos into events based on the day the photo was taken, or based on the day I import into iPhoto.
So far, I think that's all.

1) When deleting events, do the photos in those events get deleted from the library and from any albums they are in?
Yes if you empty the iPhoto trash and the system trash. And if you have a default managed library
2) I am finding there are many duplicates spread out across many events, when I only imported those photos from my phone once. What's the best way to import photos so I don't end up with duplicates?
Are you seeing this in iPhoto?  If so please describe your work flow in detail
3) Is there any way to not have any events?
No. Events is one view of your library. You can ignore events but you must have them.
4) When importing, does iPhoto split photos into events based on the day the photo was taken, or based on the day I import into iPhoto.
The split into events is determined by your settings in the iPhoto preferences

  • IPhoto's Faces has created duplicate photo, events, and small photos capturing just faces

i bought this MBP late last year and import iPhoto Library from old MBP. Faces feature has created many thousands small photos capturing just faces of people in the photos.
It also created lots of duplicated photos.
How to delete these photos in batch?

    Larry,
Sorry for the delay. I have tried copy the iPhoto Library from the old MB via the external HDD as following screenshot.
However, when i plug this exrternal HDD to the new MBP. it turned out to bew the folder as photo attached below. I am not sure if this is because they use different version or not (but i guess not).
    pls advice.

  • How to quickly compare photos in events and albums?

    Hi there,
Was wondering - I have a ton of photos from several years in my iphoto events/general photos, of which the good ones are arranged neatly into iphoto albums.
Problem is, I want to clean up my iphotos and get rid of all the extra photos that aren't very good and didn't make it into an album. In other words, if the photo was worth keeping, it's already in an album, so I just want to delete everything from my events that's not in an album. However, is there any easy way to go through the events and find out which photos are already in an album so that I can delete them if they aren't? I understand that if I delete photos from events, it will also delete it from the album, so that makes it really annoying and tricky.
It would take so, so long to go through every single photo and flip back and forth between events and albums to see which ones are in albums and which ones aren't. From what I can tell (unless I'm wrong), I can't even open two windows of iphoto so I can compare side by side.
If anyone knows a solution, I would be very grateful.
    Thanks,
    Tracy

    File -> New Smart Album
Album -> Is not -> Any
    will find them for you.
Option-command-delete will move them to the trash
    Empty the iPhoto trash.
Empty the System trash and they are gone.
One tip: delete in batches of about 100 or so. Deleting more at a time can cause problems.

  • Move from iPhoto '11 to Lightroom using PS Elements to keep Events and Albums

I am trying to move from iPhoto '11 to Lightroom by using PS Elements as a go-between to keep events and album but it doesn't appear that the option to keep events and albums is possible using iPhoto '11.  However, the instructions for coming from iPhoto '09 show that option.  Is there any way to do this?

I’m not sure about that routine. I’m not even sure events are transferrable and there of lots of things that could go wrong. You may want to think about importing your masters directly into Ligtroom. From finder you need to be in Pictures (not the application) and control-click on iPhoto Library.
iPhoto will have created duplicates and hidden your originals. You need to find your masters from the iPhoto Library - Right-Click and select “Show Package Contents”
Older versions of iPhoto uses an Originals folder and in later versions; Masters. It’s not a good idea to go messing with the structure as it could corrupt the iPhoto Library. Apple has made this structure for good reason; so that you can always use the revert command to go back to an original, even if you have edited in iPhoto using cropping or red eye removal, for example.
However, if you have no further use for iPhoto, you could consider moving your originals/masters to a new folder structure (iPhoto automatically creates dated sub-folders) and then importing to Lightroom. Alternatively if you still need iPhoto, export duplicates to the desktop and bring those into Lightroom. That will keep iPhoto safe.
I do actually use iPhoto for creating events which can then be used to make cool slideshows within iPhoto. However Lightroom is my main management and photo editing tool and I have created an export pre-set for sending jpegs into iPhoto. I have even dragged the iPhoto Library off the hard drive to an external hard drive – but that means keeping it connected when using iPhoto.

  • Another way to look at Events and albums (smart and dumb)

Maybe this will help others, but I had an epiphany regarding iPhoto 08 and the organizational method (or lack there of) in regards to Events and albums, etc.
Here it goes: iPhoto is now iTunes for pictures. I know it has been said before, but this time it truly is.
When you import a CD with iTunes, it creates a directory of songs in your library. When you import a group of pictures in iPhoto, it similarly imports them as an event. Events = CD's, plain and simple.
Think of searching for photos the same way you would search for songs. By typing in the artist, the album the specific title - etc you can easily find a song. With events, all the pictures are linked to the title of the event, so searching is very easy and fast.
Gone are the days of complicated hierarchy systems in Winamp or iPhoto 06. If you want a photo, you type the name of the event - or a keyword tagged into the photo.
But say you want some albums of specific songs, or in this case, photos. You can create albums or smart albums to accomplish this for quick access. Or maybe a Christmas album that automatically updates with every christmas photo entered and tagged.
I am an Aperture user and all my folders are setup like this:
    Vacations --> Beach --> Florida --> 2007
If I switched to iPhoto, they will be created in a simple event, for example:
    Florida Beach Vacation 2007
Now every picture within that event name would be searchable by typing in florida, beach etc. Even deeper, by tagging individual photos by the person's name or any other photo-specific info, these pics would even be more searchable.
Anyway, I hope this helps some people grasp the new concepts of organization in iPhoto 08. Surely it can be done several different ways, but I think this may be the best way to do it.

Events = CD's, plain and simple.
Great analogy! May I then add,
    Albums = playlists
I see people here asking why a photo can't be in an album and in No event; perhaps the iTunes analogy would be helpful to them. If you don't have the song in your library (because you don't have that CD) then you can't put it in a playlist. (Nevermind that you can download single songs now - it doesn't fit the analogy. Remember when you had to buy the hard copy.)
    Thanks for the information.
    Regards.

  • Iphoto, Creating events and Albums

I have attempted to create events and albums on the photo app in Ipad with no success. I have also synced the iPad to itunes and transfered pictures from an existing iphoto (macbook pro) event with no success. How can i create events and albums on the Ipad so i can seperate new pictures into specific areas for viewing.

You can't. Photos on the iPad doesn't have organising features. You can't create groupings, or copy from one event/whatever to another. You have limited features in the 'camera roll' for images you've saved onto the iPad - you can delete them or share them.
Your organising has to be done on the Mac in iPhoto or Aperture. Both create Events based on metadata from the image (date and time and so on). You can make albums and sync the albums to the iPad.
I know that isn't what you want, but it's all we've got. It bears repeating - the iPad is not a completely standalone device - it's dependent on a desktop and iTunes for its full functionality.

  • Aperture-sorted event and album images out of order

I am syncing events and albums from Aperture to my iPad through iTunes. In iOS iPhoto the images within these events and albums have a seemingly random sort order, rendering the application useless to me. The sort order is fine in the iOS Photos application, so I am thinking it is a problem with iOS iPhoto. Anyone have a fix for this? I thought it would surely be fixed in the new update, but it was not. I have uninstalled and reinstalled iOS iPhoto, have unsynced and resynced albums, etcetera.
I know this pertains to old threads, but couldn't find one that was coherent. Hopefully this one is.

I have no fix to offer as I am affected by it too. I posted one of the original threads on this and have used the Apple report a problem system to report it too. I am amazed this issue wasn't addressed in the update. It makes iPhoto on the iPad unusable for me.
I've just submitted repeat feedback on the problem to http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto_ios.html

  • HELP! Recovered iphotolibrary lost ALL events and albums?!

Without a clear reason and absolutely no warning, iPhoto (on my brand new MacBookPro with all current updates etc.) suddenly showed '0' photos in my <80t photo library. After the itinial panic I was able to 'recover' the photos with 'recover library' option by Option+open. To my shock the entire photo library has been 'recovered' in a single 'recovered photos' event. Total catastrophe.. Could someone please have an idea how to get iPhoto to find the previous event and album hierarch? Grateful for ANY tips out there. Thank you!!

You can try rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
If that doesn't help then there is no fix, I'm afraid.

  • Sync Events AND Albums ?

Is there a trick to get both Events and Albums listed on the ATV?
I use allways Events which contain all the pictures available and sometimes an Album with a selection for slide show. Would be nice to see both Event and Album on the large screen....
    kind regards
    Werner

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
I'm afraid there is no way to sync both albums and events.
You could always make smart albums that reflect events or just albums that reflect events, but I guess that's not what your are after.

They should, yes.  You should have a full and complete backup as well, of course.

  • How to remove a duplicate photo from an album.  Photo sweeper says there are no duplicates in photos

how can I remove duplicate photos from albums,  I have removed 2000 duplicates from iphoto using photo sweeper.  still duplicates in my album.

thanks, but in my albums trash is greyed out and hitting delete does nothing..
Is your album a smart album? You can only remove photos from smart albums by changing the smart rules for the album.
If I move the duplicate to another new album, can I then trash the new album?
It is still not clear, what duplicates you are asking about. Photos in albums are not duplicates. Albums are showing you the same photos you are seeing in your events, just grouped differently for easy access. You can delete any album completely and will still have the same photos in your iPhoto library.
If Photo sweeper says,"there are no duplicates", you probably really do not have duplicates in your iPhoto library.
You only have duplicates, if you are seeing identical photos twice in events, but not, if you you are seeing the same photo once in an album and once in an event. You can check that, by ctrl-clicking any photo in an album and selecting "Show Event". Then you will see, what the event is, that is containing this particular photo.

  • Photo Files and iPhoto Questions

I have a few questions in relation to my actual picture files and when they are imported into iPhoto (on my mac).
Intro: Let me catch you up on my situation, I have all my picture files (around 8000 of them!) on my time capsule; most of them are organized in their own folders (such as halloween 2011 and christmas 2010) but some of them are unsorted in their own folders (such as unsorted 2012 and moms cam). I've imported all these into iPhoto, the folders all appear as events, and I have applied faces and locations to almost all of them (about 85%). Now my questions:
1: If I delete/move some pictures from my time capsule around the folders (so I move some picture from moms cam to halloween 2012 and thanksgiving 2012 folders), how do I sync this with iPhoto? (Ex. I have deleted some pictures from "my graduation" folder in my time capsule, but on the iphoto event for "my graduation", all the pics are there even the ones Ive deleted) Will I have to manually delete these from iphoto as well?
    Status: unanswered
2: Is the data saved on the picture file? So If I were to delete the event from iPhoto, and re-import the folder, will all the faces and locations that Ive added on iPhoto still be saved? or would I have to manually add all the faces and locations again?
    Status: unanswered
3: My main photo files are the files on my Time Capsule; If, by chance, iPhoto turns out to make its own file system of the photos I import, where would that location be? Are they individual files (such each pic as a .jpeg file) or is it something more like a single file with all the pictures and data?
    Status: unanswered

1 - is the Time Capsule being used as an external hard drive or as a Time Machine backup drive - you must not use it as both
2 - is the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" is checked ( - a managed library - default and strongly recommended) or have you unchecked i (a referenced library - which it sound like you have - this is strongly not recomended)
for your question 1, if you have a referenced library - iPhoto never does anything outside of its database - the iPhoto library - and it does not "sync" or watch external folders -  if you choose to manage the originals then you must do that  - one of the many reasons that a referenced library is not recommended is that improting is more difficult and deleting is more difficult
for question 2, if you delete photos from iPhoto then they and all of their associated data is gone - if you reimport the "same" photo, its is totally new to iPhoto - you are starting from scratch with it
for your question 3 - this is not a matter of chance - you either have a referenced library or a managed library which you choose - and in a referenced library the originals are not copied to the iPhoto library - for a managed library they are and are stored in the masters or originals folder in iPhoto depending on your version of iPhoto which you do not share as bit for bit copies of the originals

  • Burn Events AND Albums to DVD

I would like to burn a copy of my iPhoto '08 library (which will fit on a single DVD) that will be re-mountable within iPhoto. However, it seems to allow me to EITHER burn all the events, but then no albums are retained OR burn all the albums, but then only photos which have been added to those albums are burned to disc. I would simply like to have a COMPLETE iPhoto library backup. The wrinkle is that most of the photos were not copied into the iPhoto Library folder/package, but rather referenced in an external folder. I would be willing to have iPhoto consolidate the originals from the external folder into a new single iPhoto Library package. Is there anyway to accomplish this?
    Thanks,
    JV

most of the photos were not copied into the iPhoto Library folder/package, but rather referenced in an external folder.
This is the worst case scenario - a mixed library, part managed, part referenced and is a recipe for disaster.
    This thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1356720&tstart=0
mentions an app called AliasHerder which will make the library a referenced one. Then you can simply use the Share -> Burn command to back up the library to a disk that
    will be re-mountable within iPhoto.
Simply make sure you have the Library selected in the iPhoto Window, not a particular Event or Album.

  • Load new pictures to exiting events and more questions.

When I load new pictures to iphoto how can I add them to existing events?
When I create albums do the pictures I put in there get "copied" or are they just linking to the originals in events? I don't want to rack up all my memory creating albums.
If I add, modify, or delete pictures in the events will it update my albums too?
How can I resize a picture to load it too ebay or something?
Where are the actuall files kept on the hard drive so I can copy them to a flash drive or something?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
When I load new pictures to iphoto how can I add them to existing events?
You can't. You can move them once they are imported by drag and drop, or by flagging the pics and then selecting your target Event and going Events menu -> Add Flagged Photos to Selected Event.
When I create albums do the pictures I put in there get "copied" or are they just linking to the originals in events? I don't want to rack up all my memory creating albums.
They are simply referenced. A pic can be in 1,000 Albums and use no more disk space than if it were in 1. A pic cannot be in more than one Event without being duplicated. In any case, it's not your Memory that would get used up, it's your HD space.
If I add, modify, or delete pictures in the events will it update my albums too?
If you add pics to an Event they will not be automatically added to an Album unless it is a Smart Album. As the pics in an Album are referenced, if you edit the pic in an Event it's edited in the Album, if you trash pic from an Event it's removed from the Album etc.
How can I resize a picture to load it too ebay or something?
Select the pic in the iPhoto Window and use the File -> Export command. In the resulting window you have various options, including resizing the pic.
Where are the actuall files kept on the hard drive so I can copy them to a flash drive or something?
By default your Library is in your Pictures Folder. It's called the, er, iPhoto Library. It's a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Want to see inside: Right click on the Library icon and go 'Show Package Contents'. A Finder window opens with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
