Duplicate Photo Import

Sorry for the multiple questions as I get up to speed here.
Does anyone know if the Duplicate Photo prompt (don't import/import) is asking whether you wish to import duplicates within that one single import? Or can iPhoto detect that you are importing a photo that you previously imported (which is in another Event) and it is prompting you to ask if you wish to also import this photo into this new Event?
Thanks.

It checks your Library for a duplicate that's already been imported.
There is no way to import to an Existing Event.

  • How to hide duplicate photos that origins from the photo stream and imported photos?

    Hi,
I are using my camera both with an IPad (through SD-card reader) and directly to my iMac.
I want to keep the full photo archive on the iMac.
Now the problem, that I encounter, is that if I use the iPad to look at the photos, those photos will be transfered to the photo-stream.
Then later when I import all my photos from the camera to the i Mac, those photos that I happened to import to the iPad will show up as duplicate in iPhoto.
Of course I only want one copy of a photo regardless if they arrive from the photo-stream or through a direct import to my iMac.
Is there a way to fix this problem or is it simply a bug?
I think it would be rather easy for the iPhoto software to detect duplicates and hide them.

You can use one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find dupicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: i photo has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but the only duplicate finder app that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates was PhotoSweeper.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have diffferent file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

  • Photos - import sometimes re-imports (duplicates) old imports

I was on vacation for a week. Every day or two, I'd put the same SD card into the Camera Connector so the iPad would import the new photos; I was NOT deleting them after import. Sometimes this worked fine - it would ask about importing the duplicate photos, and I'd say no so it would only add the new ones. At least twice, though, it apparently decided that every photo was new, so "Last Import" contained everything, and "All Imported" now has 3 copies of the early photos, 2 of the middle ones, and the expected 1 copy of the last bunch. I haven't tried to isolate exactly what might be going on, but the iPad and the camera were the only devices - the SD card was NOT connected to a netbook, notebook, desktop, etc. during the trip.

iBack up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library

  • When importing my photos from iPhone i see all my photos as duplicates before importing

while trying to import my photos from my iPhone6 to macbook pro using iPhoto i see my pictures as duplicates before importing this the first time i get this problem

    gail from maine wrote:
    Hey Larry,
I have noticed this when I import my photos as well. But I was thinking that for me, maybe it is because I also import my Photo Stream automatically, so when I'm importing my camera roll, they might have already been imported automatically from the Photo Stream?
Is that why I would be getting the duplicates when I import?
    Thanks,
    GB
Different problem - OP sees duplicates in the import window - you are importing twice (once automatically form PhotoStream and a second time by connecting the camera) - importing a photo twice will always give you two copies - do one or the other - not both

  • IPhoto 4 importing duplicate photos without dialog box opening

I often import pictures from my Canon PowerShot SD550 to more than one computer. I do not use iPhoto to delete photos after importing. Occasionally I need to import more recent photos to one computer before I have the opportunity to import older photos to the other computer which is at another location. I used to get a dialog box on this computer asking me if I want to import duplicate photos. I must have accidentally checked the wrong box once because iPhoto now imports all photos every time without the dialog box. How can I regain control to not import duplicates?

It's just me … restating my question. My original wording was not as clear as I thought!

  • Deleting Duplicate Photos once imported

Earlier this year my hard drive failed. I paid to get data recovered and somehow have managed when getting everything sorted to import all my photos into iPhoto at least twice.
Is there any way I can remove all duplicate Photos with having to go through and delete them one by one?

Most likely you imported your previous iPhoto library into the new one - this should never be done - it does not work and creates massive buduplication
the best solution would be to export all of the photos you have imported since doing this to a desktop folder, dragging the bad library to the desktop and dragging the old library to the pictures folder, launching iPhoto and importing the photos you just exported
If this is not possible Duplicate Annihilator is a good solution

  • HT1229 The library folder recent imported duplicate photos, how do you removed duplicate imported photos?

I have had photos , photos albums, or folders deleted in the past, and I have somehow recaptured them by a way that is unknown or clear to me.  Anyway I imported them to the library and it is now in the the library folder recent last 12 months imported.  There are thousands photos are shown duplicate, how do I removed or organized the duplicate photos in a shortcut  without going through all of them ( 23, 000 of photos imported), and secure them in a folder/location/area without loosing them again .

If you're seeing these duplicates in the iPhoto window (and not the Finder) you can use these applications to identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:

DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) -  this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.

  • Protection from importing duplicate photos in iPhoto 5.0.2

    Hi everyone,
It seems that the protection from importing duplicate photos that was present on the 4.x.x version of iPhoto (that came with Panther) has been removed from version 5.0.2. Is it just me or have other noticed this change? I looked around and could not find any settings for this.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Steve, that pref is kept in the iPhoto Preference file. Trash it and you should get the dialog back...I hope.

  • Importing from another catalog hangs up at "Checking for changed duplicate photos" in LR 4.3

Importing from another catalog hangs up at "Checking for changed duplicate photos" in LR 4.3.
I went on a vacation so exported a subset of my main LR catalog on my PC so I could do some work on my laptop.  I added some new photos and also editied some olde ones.
Now that I am back home, when I ty to Import from the smaller catalog into my Main Catalog on my PC, the Import from catalog process gets immediately stuck on the step "Checking for changed duplicate photos.'
How can I work around this?
Is this a new bug in 4.3?
    Thanks.
    John

Yes, the catalogs were optimized, but...the master catalog on my desktop is
    HUGE.  I mean...really, really, HUGE.
So, that probably explains the very long time it took?
But...I was confused at first, and really did think that LR was 'stuck'
while importing from the smaller catalog and "Checking for changed duplicate
    photos".
Next time, I'll just be more patient.
And...in the end, everything went as it should, and I now have all my edits
and new photos incorporated into my HUGE catalog on my desktop.

For IPhoto '09, version 8.1.2:  If I permanently delete the photos from the IPhoto trash, will any of the duplicate photos in the IPhoto library also be deleted?

    1. There are no duplicates in iPhoto unless you imported two or more copies of the same photo
    2. If you are useing the defaults in iPhoto and delete a photo from an event and empty the iPhoto trash and the system trash all versions of the photo will be gone

  • Is there a way to automatically detect and delete duplicate photos in a library

I just imported a load of photos into my main iPhoto '11 Library from several older MAC's Photo Libraries. Despite repeatedly using the "Don't Import Duplicate Photos" dialogue box, I have many duplicate photos. Is there a way to automatically detect and delete Duplicate Photos?
I also have iPhoto Library Manager installed on my MAC, but cannot seem to locate on it anything that would do this.
I have over 4,000 photos, so would really appreciate some help here! Thanks in advance...

    duplicate annihilator - http://www.brattoo.com/propaganda/
And NEVER import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - doing so des not work and creates massive duplication
if you still have all of the original iPhoto libraries I recommend you drag the bad one you created to the desktop (delete it later when everythin has successfully been completed) and start over usin iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to merge the libraries

  • Want to get PSE organiser 11 to recognise duplicates at import

I have recently acquired a macbook pro with mountain lion and bought photoshop elements because I am familiar with the windows version (older). (I want to keep the photos i download in folders i can see, not embedded in iPhoto).
The first batch of photos i downloaded from my iphone with iphoto and then imported into photoshop organiser without a problem.
But for subsequent batches i tried to download directly using import>from camera or card reader, and saving in a named folder within Pictures (and in subfolders according to date). This was fine the FIRST time I did it, but now it does not recognise any photos IMPORTED THROUGH ELEMENTS ORGANISER as duplicates. So every time I download photos from the iphone it duplicates them in my folders.....that is....all EXCEPT the ones that I originally imported from iPhoto.
It correctly recognises these as duplicates and allows me to deselect them before import. But NOT so, for the ones downloaded directly using Elements organiser.
I theorised that Elements organiser is changing the metadata files when it imports and subsequently not recognising the original ones it detects on my phone as the same image. So I experimented with choosing 'none' instead of 'basic metadata' as metadata template, and experimented with checking the option to 'preserve current name in XMP' but it did not make any difference and continued to not recognise duplicates (but ONLY those imported directly from the phone bypassing iphoto) no matter which Elements Organiser options were used when the image was downloaded for the first time. (The size of the file was 1-2kb bigger when 'none' instead of 'basic metadata' was used for the original, though.)
THE MAIN REASON I BOUGHT PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS INSTEAD OF USING IPHOTO WAS SO I COULD SAVE MY IMAGES IN MY OWN FOLDER STRUCTURE.
But if I cant do this without either duplicating everything each time i import, OR having to mentally keep track of all the previously imported photos and manually select only the new ones (and run the risk of missing some), then it is unwieldy and a waste of money.
And there seem to be a lot of people with this problem on other threads and not all using macs. this seems like a very basic problem and surely should be fixed by the developers?????
    LATER....
I have just discovered the SAME THING HAPPENS with my Panasonic Lumix DMC-T27. Files that are already imported are not recognised as duplicates when I take another photo and then try to import just the last photo. PSE organiser wants to import the whole card again. So far I have only tried it once with the metadata options set for "preserve current name in XMP" and "none" for metadata template (as opposed to Basic Metadata template).
I did notice in the info section for the duplicated images that the duplicates have different times. The 'Date Created' under "file properties" for each of the duplicates (.JPG, -1.JPG, -2.JPG -3.JPG) increases by what looks like the time it was added by the organiser.
Does this mean that PSE organiser is modifying the 'Date Created' info to match the time imported and then at next import it is using the modified "date Created" time to check for duplicates?? Of course they are all seen as new files if this is the case!! Can this bug be fixed if it is a bug?? (This would fit with the iphoto ones being recognised correctly as duplicates because the original files for these are still stored in iphoto and haven't been downloaded or modified when saved via PSE organiser.)
I have taken screen shots of an example that was imported 4 times using different options as above and the 'Date created' increases for all of them regardless of the options i fiddled with as mentioned above. I can email them to anyone who thinks it would help solve the issue.
I may be barking up the wrong tree with all of this, but any help or hope of a future fix would be much appreciated,
    Thanks
    Kerrie

I have had this problem of duplicate imports and used the following work around.
In the photo downloader, do not select any option that will in any way change the photo's name or metadata when it is imported. If there is any difference between the previous import and the file still on the camera, the downloader will not recognize them as duplicates and will import the camera file, yet again. In short, select "Do not rename files." "Advanced Options" should all be blank except the leave-pictures-on-camera selection. "Apply Metadata" should have only "Basic Metadata" selected with all other options blank.
Of course, one still has the previously imported "altered" files on the PC or Mac even if future duplicate imports from the camera stop. Solving this is simply laborious and time consuming. Import the photos, yet again, using the settings described above. Then use PSE to identify duplicate photos and, one-by-one, delete all duplicates from the catalog and hard drive except for the most recent import, which should in all respects be identical to the file still on the camera.
This worked for me. Hope it helps you.

  • Is there a way to delete multiple duplicate photos easily?

Is there a way to remove duplicate photos.  I have a hard disk crask and the backup put multipul copies of photos in the photo file.  Is there an easy way to eliminate them?

Sounds like you imported that back up rather than restored it. Do you still have it? If so, it would easier and faster to restore it correctly.
    If not:
Some apps for dealing with duplicates in iPhoto
    iPhoto Library Manager
    Duplicate Annihilator
    Decliner
    iPhoto Duplicate Cleaner

  • How can I identify and delete duplicate photos

is there a way to identify and delete duplicate photo's in I photo?

No one is suggesting that you download third party "crap". What was suggested is that you download a well established and supported 3rd party application. As to why there isn't a "'delete your stupid duplicate photo' option", you'll need to ask Apple that. Apple aren't here. This forum is for Users to help other Users. As to why you import stupid photos, you'll need to ask yourself.

  • PSE10 Crashes when searching for duplicate photos

    Hello,
I recently upgraded to PSE10 and imported my catalog from a different machine (which had been running XP).  Unfortunately, I ended up with a bunch of duplicate entries in the catalog, one with the path c:\users\... the other with c:\my documents\...  These paths both point to the same image on the hard drive.
When I try to Search for Duplicate Photos (from Find>By Visual Searches), PSE invariably crashes.  I am running PSE10 under Windows 7 (full system info at the end of this message).
Any idea why this might be happening, and is there a different way I can remove the duplicate entries in the catalog?
    Thanks,
    Chris

If I understand well, what you are calling 'duplicates' are duplicate entries in the catalog, the same media being called either by its original path+filename or shortcut path+filename.
The organizer will try open two different files to compare them, but when trying to open the second 'shortcut', the file will be already blocked (in use). That could explain the failure of the comparison for similarity.
Try creating a new catalog with similar images, for instance jpegs and png copies. Does the visual search work ?
About backup and restore : If my supposition is right, that should work if you try to restore to a new custom location with keeping the file structure : the backup should create real file duplicates on different paths. If it works, finding visual duplicate should work, although this process may take a very long time.
