Duplicate Printers on Network

Does anyone know how to find source of duplicate printers on network? First I thought it was because of Mac OS X server and Windows 2003 server on same subnet, both sharing. Turned off Print services for Mac on Win2k3; still had duplicate printers. Then thought maybe someone else was sharing network printers -- looked at my own machine and realized that I was sharing printers and was unable to uncheck the box. Now I have fixed that issue and we still have duplicate printers.....still wonder if someone else has printers shared.
If users choose either "printer" or "printer1" one of them will show the correct printer model and it will print; the other choice doesn't work. The only problem comes when students, who have no admin privileges, try to print -- they can not add new printer.

Hello Roy,
With regards to the shared printers, where are you seeing them? Is it in the Printer Browser > Default Browser or is it via the Print dialog of an application? And does it say Shared Printer or the printers name? The reason I ask is that if you have a printer that supports Bonjour or AppleTalk, it will make itself visible on the network, but not with the name of Shared Printer.
Personally I haven't seen shared Windows printers displaying in the Printer Browser > Default Browser or Print Dialog > Shared Printers of an application (probably because Bonjour for Windows hasn't been installed) so I would say that if it is not the printer advertising itself then it would be one of the Mac's on the network. Finding which one could require a long process of elimination.
For the record, no admin privileges are needed on the local Mac to print to the shared printer. You need them if you want to install the printer 'locally' that connects to a network share. But the student will be able to print to the shared printer (especially if it is provided by Mac Server) without installing it locally.

Paul

  • Duplicate printers

In Adobe reader, all networked printers are showing in the print box twice. One of the printers doesn't work when it is selected. I have confirmed there is only 1 instance of the printer installed on the machine. I noticed that one of the printers is showing in capitals and one in lower case, e.g. \\SERVERNAME\RICOH..... and \\servername\ricoh etc
    So far I have tried:
Uninstalling and reinstalling the network printer - same issue
Adding the printer manually - Reader closed as soon as you selected print
Uinstalling and reinstalling Adobe Reader - same issue
Uninstalling the printer, deleting all instances of the printer from the registry and then readding the printer - same issue
    Any thoughts?

Strangest thing...if you go to your printers and select a different default printer (while in Adobe Reader) and then switch it back to your original default printer it for some reason deletes the duplicate printer. We shut down and rebooted and it was still gone.

  • Windows 7 pro Auto Deleating all printers on Network

Over the past months we have replaced all of our computers from Windows XP Pro to Windows 7 Pro unites. When the last computer was changed out, (it is the computer
that all of our printers are connected to the network through. Printers we use on our network, an Epson Lq 570+ (Connected by parallel port), HP OfficeJet Pro 8100 (Connected by USB port),  HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A (Connected by USB
port) and a Eltron 2844 UPS printer (Connected by USB port) they all get automatically deleted for a workstation at the same time.
We have 6 computers on the network. I have the computers setup on / in both a Workgroup and a Home Group. 1 we store all of our files on this computer
and is not used as a workstation, 1 has all of our printers connected to it and this is not used as a workstation and 4 computers us as workstations.   The network was working great before I replaced the last XP computer with the printers
on it. The next day one of the workstations did not have any of the network printers in device manger so I added them back.  They automatically deleted four time yesterday and two time already today.  Now a second computer
is doing the same thing.  What is wrong, if this continues I will need to go back to the old computer running XP Pro.
    Thanks for your help

    Karen,
Old Network: We have 6 computers on the network. (5 are running Windows 7 Pro) (1 is running XP Pro)  the computer running XP Pro has all the printers connected to
it (4... 1 HPOffice Jet Pro 8100   1 HP Office Jet Pro 8500   1 Eltron 2800 UPS Lable Printer and 1 Epson LQ570+)  in this configuration the network is working great all 5 computers running Windows 7 Pro can print
and the printers stay in "Devices and Printers"
The new network: We have 6 computers on the network all running windows 7 Pro. The only change was to  change out the Last XP Pro computer with a Windows 7 Pro Computer. We set up all the printers on the
new computer (printers same as above) and shared the with all the other computers.   Under this setup we are loosing the printers on all the computers other then the computer that they are plug into. when it happens we loose all 4 printers
on one of the other computers.  I then reset them up on that computer and later a different computer has lost the printers.  this goes on all day and that is why I went back to the computer running XP Pro
I hope this explains it a little better.
I believe it is a Windows 7 problem or it could be that I'm using both a "Workgroup" and a "Home Group".   (I had to set up a Workgroup when I had a mix of XP and Windows 7 computers.)
    Thanks for your help

  • Client printer lists contain numerous duplicate printers

Since upgrading our Mac OS X Server software to v10.4 (now updated to v10.4.4) the printer lists on client computers in our student computer labs (running Mac OS X 10.3.9) contain multiple duplicate copies of the available printers.
There are so many duplicates on some computers that the printer list takes a couple of minutes to open. One printer in particular, a HP Laserjet 1320, seems to appear duplicated more than the other printers but they all seem to be affected to some degree.
I have tried deleting all the duplicates but the problem just recurs. Has anyone else suffered this problem or found a fix for it - it is becoming very annoying for many of our users when they attempt to print.

    Hi Phil,
Check that printer sharing is not enabled on some of the clients, check this link also

  • HP Printer Control app offers only one of the printers on network. How to add a second printer.

The original "eprint home and biz" recognized both printers on my network.  After upgrade, have lost one printer and see no way to add it.  HELP, please?!?

Unfortunately the Printer Control app only supports printers manufactured from 2010+ that are ePrint capable. That is why it is not working with your 2710.
And it looks like the HP ePrint app (formerly the ePrint Home& Biz app) has removed support for some of the older model printers with its most recent update.

  • How to print to two printers via network?

    Hi,
I just moved into a new house with ethernet cabling throughout. I'd love to print to my two printers (HP LaserJet 1012 and a Canon iP3600) via the network without using a computer. However, I can't figure out how to do it.
    So far, I've tried:
Attaching a USB hub to my 1st generation Airport Extreme. Didn't work. Don't think they support hubs. I can print to either printer if individually hooked up, just not via the hub.
A D-Link D-301U USB ethernet print server. Misread the specs. Thought this came with two USB ports. Tried each printer individually, but couldn't figure out how to hook it up. Failed utterly with a USB hub attached.
The issue is NOT the network connection. No problems plugging my computer directly into the ethernet on the wall and getting great connectivity.
Any suggestions how to do this? I've heard that the latest Airport Extremes support printing through a USB hub...
    Thanks in advance.

The drivers provided by HP and Canon for those printers are USB-Only! You will have to use third-party drivers for each, to use the standard network print protocols. Apple has included one set of third-party drivers, Gutenprint, in OS X. To see if your printers are supported by the latest Gutenprint version, check here:

  • Problems Printing Invoice Duplicate in a network printer

    Good Morning.
I'm having a problem in a client, printing Invoices.
Every time I send an invoice to the network printer (HP LaserJet M1522 MFP Series PCL6), in the first page (only in that one) of the duplicate, all the text labels have boxes. But if I send it to the printer directly connected to the pc (HP Laserjet P1505), everything is printed as it should be.
Can anyone help me with this situation, because the client really want to print the invoices to the network printer. Could this be originated by some kind of error with drivers (because I've checked everything in SAP, an it's OK)?
    Best Regard,
    Marta Silva

    Hi Marta Silva,
The network printer you are using is one of the worst reputation printer in the market.  You could try different drivers to see if the problem goes away.  Other than that, I don't think there are other solutions.
    Thanks,

  • Adding shared printers? Network printer not showing up in list

I have a network printer not showing up in the Bonjour Printer Wizard. There is not a place to add a printer to this list. Does my network printer need to be installed under the Windows side as well, or can I share it using Bonjour? I'm confused as to how the shared printer program works. Also, my Adobe "print to pdf" option shows up as a printer, but how do I change the file destination location? It doesn't give me an option to change the "saved to" location. I am using these printers through Parallels in AutoCad, and that should be the only reason I will need to share printers. But I am in AutoCad a good deal of time, so I need to know how to quickly print my drawings.

    Welcome to the forums!
You don't say if you installed after downloading the Printer you deleted, but I suspect it's one not showing, and that you need to reinstall.

  • Install 2 x64 printers on network

I have a 5740e printer connected to my network and working perfectly. I want to connect a second identical printer and before I buy one am a little concerned I may run into conflict issues.
My plan is to change the Name of the second printer from the front panel (before I connect it to the network) then connect and presumably the printer will sit on the network with its new name and assigned ip address. Do I then add it to each PC via windows or as a new printer vis HP Printer assist. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi @NeilGM
From your description, it sounds to me like you are going to change the printers Host name. This is a good idea to avoid confusion between one printer and the other. Once the printer is on the network, you can add it through the HP Printer Assistant. This will help ensure the software on the computer knows to communicate with this printer.

  • Replaced old router, now cannot automatically find printers on network?

Recently replaced old Belkin router w/new Linksys BEFSR41 router. Internet access on all computers is normal. However, the computers on my home network (all Macs both wired and wireless) can no longer print to either of the printers on the network unless we address them with specific IP addresses. The printer drivers are up to date. All connections to the router are correct and the cables are tested and working properly. When printing, the printer window shows an endless search "looking for printer..." Additionally, with file sharing enabled on all computers, I am no longer able to "see" the computers on the network. I am certain the issue is some setting in the router I have failed to adjust. Can someone help me!

I have done the powering down and sequential restart of all components with no solution in sight yet. The network has the following components: Motorola cable modem connected to the Linksys router w/4 ports which has connected to it the following components: an Airport Extreme set to NOT distribute IP addresses but allows the router to do so automatically; Mac Pro; G4 Tower; Linksys Switch via uplink cable to which are attached the two printers (OKIDATA and HP). By the way, eliminating the Switch by connecting the OKIDATA directly to the router did NOT solve the problem, even with power downs and power ups. Thanks

  • Mbp not seeing printers on network...

i'm coming to this setup late (someone else configured everything).
we have 2 epson printers, on an ethernet network, and 3 macs: a G5, a G3 imac, and a new macbook pro.
the other 2 macs see the printers, and work fine. the mpb can connect to the network (and access files on the g5, for instance), but cannot see the printers.
    any ideas?

    Hi fisherKing,
When you say see, do you mean they aren't visible in the Default Browser view of the Printer Browser window? If yes, then this would most likely be due to AppleTalk being disabled in the MBP. Network printers not running AppleTalk do not appear in the Default Browser view. You have to add them via the IP Printer view.
Personally I wouldn't bother with AppleTalk. If the Epson's have an IP address then connect to them via LPR or IPP.

  • Duplicate name on network

I have a network using WRT54G v1.1 router. I have recently restored a backup image of my XP desktop on this network to another desktop also on the network. How do I resolve the issue of "duplicate name exists on this network?"

Right Click on the "My Computer" Icon and go to properties.
Click on the tab labeled "Computer Name" and then click on the
button that says "Change".  You can change the name of that pc
to a different name, it has to be something different than the other
    one.

  • Printers disappeared; network crawling

I'm having two problems on one machine, while several other Macs on the same network are not experiencing either issue.
First, my MacBook Pro can't find either of the two Bonjour printers on the network.  In fact, I printed a PDF to one of these printers, and the moment that that document finished printing, I tried to print a second PDF; suddenly the computer was saying the printer was offline. I rebooted the MBP and restarted the printer hardware. I tried to delete and re-add the printer to my Printer pref-pane, but the computer could find no printer on the network.  Meanwhile, I was able to print from an iMac with no problem whatsoever.
Second, the network connection on my MBP has slowed to a crawl.  It took this Apple Support page about 20 seconds to download.  Again, the iMac has no such problems; websites are snappy.
I am totally blumfustered.  Absolutely no clue as to what could be the issue.  It's not like I made any changes to the computer in the few seconds between printing the first document and trying to print the next one.  Frankly, I wasn't sure whether to put this question under hardware or software, under printing or networking, because I don't have a clue as to what is failing or where.   Anybody have any ideas?

Restart your router and see whether there's an improvement.

  • Wireless printing with 2 (or more) printers + manual network configuring

    Here's my previous question:
Network configuration: Cable modem (Linksys)-Wired cable router (Linksys)-Airport Extreme Base Station. Wired cable router is used for VOIP phone which is left on 24/7. Base station is shut off when not in use. I had 2 printers, HP multifunction and Samsung color laser printer connected to the Airport via a USB hub, but I could only print from 1. The printer I wanted to use had to be ON and then the Airport turned on to recognize it. So, I purchased a dLink DPR-1260 wireless printer hub. It had to be configured with a Windows operating system, which I did with an XP business laptop. The printer hub had to be configured wired and then the Cat 5 cable removed. The IP address: 10.0.1.2 (dynamic) is what Airport gives whenever anything is plugged into that port. MAC address: 001E589D8035 (which is what the printer hub says on it). SSID is correct. Raw TCP port and LPR/LPD enabled. Re-established Firewall and WPA2 security. Both printers work fine (even scan on HP) wirelessly with Windows XP laptop.
However, neither printer works with either MAC (G5 or iBook) Although they both (HP & Samsung) appear to be ready and start the printing process by downloading percentages of the job.
New info: The IP address of the dLink (DPR-1260) print server is now 10.0.1.3 (Airport is 10.0.1.2) I can connect to 10.0.1.3 thru Safari (or Firefox) and see the device info. I can't configure there. dLink told me to manually configure in network preferences. Their instructions told me to manual change the print server address to 102.168.0.x (x not 10). Then make Appletalk active. When I tried to add the DPR-1260 on the network is said IP Config 10.0.1.3 in use by 00:1e:58:9d:80:35 I guess I need to start over. How can I add the DPR-1260 manually to the network?

    xee -
You have two simultaneous problems. Print Server setup, and network-capable CUPS driver required for each printer. Unless either printer is a postscript one, the drivers provided by the manufacturers are Carbon-type, limited to exactly what they programmed it for - probably USB only. That's why Airport Extreme/Express have an advantage over other print servers - Apple has put Mac-to-Mac printer sharing into Extreme/Express, so a USB-only driver works over the network. Other print servers require use of the industry-standard comm protocols LPD or raw port 9100 (=HP Jetdirect) or IPP. Those standard protocols are provided by CUPS and you have to use a CUPS driver with them.
    Make it work:
    1. Allow the print server to get its IP address just as it has.
    2. Install CUPS drivers:
    http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/macosx
    or
    http://www.printfab.net
