Duplicate Problem in Playlists

Under my playlist section I don't have duplicate playlists, but folders. For instance, I have three 90's music folders, 3 audio book folders, 3 recently added, recently played folders etc. I've tried to delete them and leave just one like it's supposed to be but once I synced my Itouch, they came back again...
Also when I try to update Itunes, the new things to update are there 3 times too? Has anyone else had this problem and have an easy fix? Thanks in advance...

Holy Smokes:
I appreciate your detailed workaround post. My question is this: I use iTunes to keep everything organized (though I'm well aware of the shortcomings...) and can use the simple solution that Chris from CA posted, but I don't have room to consolidate everything. My read on consolidating is that you copy from wherever you have your music located (and right now my music is outside of the MyMusic/iTunes folder, as that backs up to my work server) and so you have to have enough room for all of your music to be copied (and then you delete it from its prior location). That's how Apple describes it in, e.g., http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748. I ain't go that kind of room. Is there any way to make the move to a completely different PC by following the simple option? From the posting I just linked it sounds like you MUST consolidate whether you use you iPod to move things or use an external drive.
Of course, I can use your workaround, but I thought I'd ask first. Many thanks.

  • HT4527 Problems importing playlists into ITunes on a new computer

I followed directions from "HT4527: iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer" by using home sharing.  The songs transferred without problem.  I am having problems moving the playlists (over 100 playlists).  I exported the library file with the playlists and saved it to the new computer in the same subdirectory with ITunes.  I have typed out the library file to verify the playlists exist, but when I try to import playlists, the lists that appear on the target computer are either empty or duplicates of the playlists that existed on the target computer.  I am using the latest version of ITunes.  The transferring computer is a Toshiba laptop running Windows 7.  The target computer is an HP Pavilion computer running Windows XP.  Thanks for any help you can give. I have spent many hours trying to transfer the songs and playlists.

If you still have the computer with your original library these are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer, without needing to export and import playlists.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have failed to move contacts and calendar items across you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • Way to avoid moving duplicates into a playlist?

    Howdy -
I'm looking for a way to avoid moving duplicates into a playlist. If I have an established playlist, and I come across another song I'd like to add, I just drop it in there. If the song already exists in the playlist, the playlist happily accepts it with no warning. Is there some way to turn on a warning? (This is a duplicate of a song you already have in your playlist. Add it anyway? YES NO).
I do realize that I can scan the playlist for duplicates after the fact, but it would be quite a bit handier to have iTunes alert me when I attempt to add a song that's already there. I wonder what percentage of the time a user would WANT the duplicate song in a playlist? I can see the value of it sometimes, certainly. And in that instance, you'd just say YES to the warning box (or select to never have it ask). Maybe this is a problem that's unique to me, but as I slowly build my playlist over many days, weeks and months - this feature would be very handy. My memory ain't what it used to be.
    Thanks.

Well, there you go. Sure enough, 7.5 (the latest version today) does exactly what I'm looking for. What were the odds of that? Thank you very much for taking the time to reply... and having the answer! Solved.

  • How do I get rid of duplicates on my playlist caused by being in the cloud?

So... how do I get rid of duplicates in my playlist, caused by having my music in the cloud? Wiithout, of course, having to delete several thousand songs individually? Grrr! Arggg!

Connect to iTunes. On summary screen for ipod, hit the "Configure Universal Access" button. Make sure none of the checkboxes are checked in the dialog box that comes up. Click apply, then sync and voiceover should be off.

  • Hi duplicate problem

    Hi,
I have a very big duplicate problem.
I only have +- 1900 contacts but there are now 21500 contacts in my icloud contacts.
I tried to delete all but it does not work,
Then I tried to delete the folders
Then I sat here for almost one day trying to delete one by one, but when I restart my phone and lap top they are all back?
Can icloud support delete all the unnecessary ones perhaps please?
I live in Thailand; does support have an email address?
How does one actually contact them with future problems?

The following link has a section "Troubleshooting duplicates with iCloud Contacts" that may help: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3998
The main support page is https://www.apple.com/support/contact/  -- I suspect but cannot verify that will automatically direct you for your country.

  • Problem making playlists with new Zen Style 300

/Problem making playlists with new Zen Style 300hI follow this procedure from the support page:
    http://support.creative.com/kb/ShowArticle.aspx?sid=804
I also have tried many other options and procedures, but each time the playlist that ends up on the player has only a few of the songs that I put on the play list. all the songs do exist on the player, but seems to randomly select only a small subset of the songs - example: 6 original, 2 get on the list, 30 on teh original, 6 get on the player's play list.
The odd part is if I go back to the player at some later time and connect via creative central, the correct playlist displays on the PC. However, is still wrong (truncated) on the player. So it seems to remember the correct play list, but just does not display correctly on the player.
    PC OS - win7
    creative centrale version .8.03
zen style 300 sw version: .0.07
Anyone get this to work on the zen style 300?
    Norm

?After many attempts? (like 6) with creative support to convince them this was a software bug, the end state response was to send the player back. Using better judgement, I waited for a new software release and indeed the problem was fixed in a subsequent release of the software.
My main frustration here was they seem to not want to escalate problems quickly to the right level of technical support that actually understands the software/debugging? vs hardware? and can look through a set of debugging steps and tests I sent in the first notes and realize it is not something hardware related. Even after citing my degrees in computer science/electrical engineering and having designed/debugged systems much more complex than this, all I got was simple procedural steps to repeat or send it back, it is a hardware problem. Ug!

  • Transferring, converting and duplicate problems.

Please please bare with me with my questions, and keep in mind I'm okay with computers but not an expert by any means.
I have been packing around an external hard drive for several years now with aprox 70gb of music and audio books.
I am on the road all summer and decided I just want all my audio with me instead of being in the mood for a certain genre of music and not having it with me.
So I have recently purchased the 160gb iPod.
I'm excited to get everything transferred over but I'm running into a few hair pulling problems.
A lot of my music on the hard drive was copied onto my computer years ago via windows media. So iTunes needs to convert these.. Which I think is working okay.. But I do get a lot of duplicates in my library. (Copies of the same song will either be lightly texted, and then solid black. They all appear to play. So I'll go through and delete say the lightly texted ones. (This happens if I choose the solid black ones too) I have them removed from iTunes but not perm from my computer...because im too scared of doing perm damage to my music library With not being 100% sure where these are perm removing it from.
HOWEVER, while I was doing this and thinking it was going along great, I started noticing it would delete my entire album I was working on! I was only deleted what I thought was duplicates and leaving a set of tracks in the album and the entire thing would disappear from my iTunes.
THis has also happened when I have deleted the "broken" tracks. The ones with ! Next to the song. I'll have the track fixed under it which plays, but once I delete the broken track, even the good track disappears.
i have several problems but this one is killing me. I have too much music and way to small of a hard drive on my pc to have it duplicating songs. And too much music to go back ripping the songs to Apple from the original cds.
    Help!

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • Duplicate songs in Playlist

Is there a way I can put songs into a playlist, and if it's already in there, it won't put a second one in, it'll just keep one? I remember it not being a problem before, but now it doesn't seem to want to work.
    -NicK

In iTunes, select your iPod, then go to the edit menu and click "Show duplicate songs." From there, just delete the ones that you don't need.

  • Itunes duplicate problem

alright it seems that for some reason or another i have duplicates of every song i have. i have been going and deleted all of the ones with the explanation points but i have over 50gigs of songs and music... this will take a very long time is there any way to delete all the ones with the explanation mark to make my life a little easier? or what should i do can someone please help me?

It looks like the duplicates the mac is showing sometimes are showing multiple entries in iTunes for the same physical file, so If I delete the file, I'm deleting the only copy of the song.
When I use the delete button to delete a duplicate, it leaves the file in place and only deletes its entry in the playlist. If I delete its entry in the main library it still leaves it on the drive. I have to go and hunt down the files on the computer and move them to the trash. Are you sure its working differently for you? Sounds like we should swap "problems"!
I think this is due to the duplicate entries using the same file...
    Yes.

  • Problems updating - 'playlists no longer exist'

Something has happened to my ipod and it's not updating, the on-screen message reads 'The ipod cannot be updated because one or more of the itunes playlists selected to update no longer exists'.
If anyone can help me solve this problem I'd really appreciate it, thanks.

  • I keep getting exact duplicate songs in playlists and libraries, how can you filter this out when upgrading these lists, or sync to the same device again? And how to do it without going through each and every P'list or Library ?

I have Windows XP-Pro SP3, the latest upgrades of Three media players, iTunes being the default player. I keep getting duplicates in playlists, libraries etc., of the same version of song. Everytime i make a change or renew my media to device or SYNC it wants to add duplicates to the computer disk, lists etc. Can you filter out same copies without having to edit each and every song, which in my case is quite large. For instance if you want to convert all mpeg, or mp4-a files to AAC you will end up with duplicates of each file type. Or you sync to an ipod, the library adds to itself---- including copies of songs already in it, if in a different file version.

    Your refer to:
" if you want to convert all mpeg, or mp4-a files to AAC "
This will always duplicate files within iTunes.  I need to ask why you're doing this conversion - all formats are compatible with iTunes, and conversion between mp3 and AAC will always involve some loss of quality.
