Duplicate solutions seem to cause more harm than good

Like many other posts I have seen, I also have many duplicates in my library. I have had two experiences trying to delete them and both resulted in a loss of music. I don't want all of these dups, but I sure don't want to lose music I have purchased or taken the time to load into Itunes. Here are the two ways I tried to delete duplicates:
1. On my HP Pavilion a1214n desktop running Windows XP and the latest download of ITunes (8.0.??), I had many duplicates and the following describes how I tried to delete them. I don't understand what I did wrong or why I lost my music/most of my library.
From my Music folder, I sorted by song name and deleted the extra copies of songs I saw. Right after that, the remaining songs started showing up with an apostrophy next to them and I couldn't access them. The error message said I should find the song in the library and play it and then brought up a dialog box for me to drill down into a library to find a song - but I couldn't find the songs in the library. I lost probably half of my library, mostly cd's I had loaded in but also songs I had purchased from the ITunes store.
I did consolidate my library after that as a result of my research on that issue, but I don't understand why my library got so messed up and why I lost much of it just because I deleted songs that appeared in the library multiple times.
2. On my Gateway MC7801u laptop running Windows Vista Premium with SP1 and the latest download of ITunes 64 bit (8.0.???), I also have many duplicates. I did not want to mess it up like my desktop so I followed the instructions in the items I found when I searched on Duplicates in the ITunes Windows forum. Those response referred me to: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1417. If the songs shown when I select show duplicates truly are duplicates, I don't understand why the song whose duplicates I deleted are now gone from my library.
The support link said to go to the file menu, select show duplicates, and delete whatever duplicates you choose to. I don't want any duplicates (I had 275 I believe) and so I selected all of the songs on the first screen and deleted them. I took note of the first song just so I could ensure it was still in my library after deleting the duplicates. I performed the delete, selected show all, and the song was no longer in my library. Why is that?
How can I eliminate duplicates without losing any songs or hurting my library?
Have I done something wrong here? Why did I lose music from my library?
Thanks,

Before you do anything else, go look in the windows recycle bin and see if you can restore the song files you deleted.
The show duplicates does just that - it shows BOTH copies. So by deleting both copies you deleted everything. iTunes is too stupid to just show you just the one good copy you want to save, in other words.

  • Thunderbolt updates do more harm than good

When I got the Thunderbolt on the release date I was lucky enough to get a phone that was functioning perfectly. I didn't have any connection or reboot errors that were being reported from launch. Then came the first update a few months ago...suddenly my phone starts to reboot itself 3+ times a day and dropping phone calls randomly. Verizon kept telling me to wait it out there's an update coming that will fix the reboot issues and all will be right with the world. Well I got the update last week and while my phone hasn't rebooted on its own, my phone no longer holds the network. The new update added a toggle so that I can choose to use the 4g network or just 3g and while it holds the 4g network nice and strong, when I set it to only 3g (because I prefer my phone to make it through the day without having to charge every 20 minutes) it drops the network every few minutes and takes sometimes up to a half hour of reboots and toggling to get it to reconnect...only to disconnect again a few minutes later. So far verizon is 0 for 2 with updates. They seem to cause more problems than they fix.

I do not see a positive outcome when a user install a firmware update / bugfix over a already configured device, the update has to update a large amount of files and if a app makes it not possible to access a required file this can make a good update go way bad, try a hard rest and see if this resolves your issue.

My ipod touch 4g just updates today on itunes and the update caused more trouble than good for me. My ipod will no longer show me the battery percentage in the top right hand corner and I am not allowed to drag other applications to the bottom panel. Also my itunes doesn't allow "enable disk use" anymore. Can anyone help? My ipod now says that it's the 4.3.4 version

    - Unjailbroken iPod never showed % battery.  Just the icon.
    - Unjailbroken iPod Touches never had a disk mode.
    - What happens when you try to drag a wiggling app to a empty space in the bottom? Does it move and snap back?

  • Why have Apple iCloud a solution that causes more problems than it solves?

    Dear All,
Steve Jobs once said that the launch of MobileMe wasn't Apple's Finest Hour" I have a sinking feeling that with the captain absent the ship has begun to drift off course. Why has iDisk been dropped, why has Syncing accross your macs been discontinued, why has there been so much talk about icloud when all it really has done is added Music and Photo syncing (thanks for solving that problem) and dropped all of the other useful features...... having to use a combination of Flickr, Dropbox and Youtube seems ridiculous given the solution was already there..... why not apply some apple brain cells to those services and make them work correctly and keep them.... all of the other 3rd party apps have proved extreemly popular, why not open up these services and make them viable as apple services, icloud has been one step forward and three steps back......not to mention the less than seamless transition from one to the other, lost calendars etc etc.
A very dissapointed, teatering Apple Fanatic.
    J

So you're one of those people who looks at the world and wonders "Why"
So we are in agreement then that syncing is less complete in terms of the services you've listed than before.
You're wrong about the last point; I did follow the instructions and made my backups (luckily) then iCloud decided to delete 2 of my calendars after I did the migration..... Nothing is impossible; don't be naive.
Let me ask you a question: If you sat down with a blank canvas, is this what you would have created as a solution for Apple?
I am very disappointed with what it is and more importantly what is could have been and isn't.

  • Update 7.3.1 causing more problems than solutions?

I'm not sure what the new update was meant to do but once I updated to 7.3.1, my transfer rate lowered drastically
I used to have 4-6 MB/s originally before the update
But on the same day, once I updated it and nothing else changed, it lowered to less than 1 MB/s
Can someone tell me what's so great about the update and if I could downgrade this machine?

Change your wireless channel, 9 or 3 are usually good. What kind of internet do you have, you may need it in bridged mode. Your issue is issolated to your network if you had two of them with issues because mine works fine and so do about 990,000 more. Hard reset the base station, use WPA2 encryption, channel 9, and disable both SNMP and configuration over WAN. All of these settings can be easily found within Manual setup if you play around a little... or just call AppleCare, the mac genious's are there to help to. See if it has the same problem in a different environment, I'd bet it has something to do with your settings, possibly a double nat.

  • I need to transfer my library from my old computer to my new computer (both PCs.)  How is this done?  The process seems to be more opaque than it really needs to be.  Thank you!!

My library (which includes items from CDs and items purchased from itunes) is on my old PC.  I have a new PC and want to transfer the library.  I can't see how to do this.  I've turned Home Sharing on for both computers, but the Share doesn't show up on either one.  I can't figure out how to move the library.  When I try to burn it on a CD it keeps saying the CD isn't blank, even tho it is.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

O.,.k. Maybe this is progress. I transfered the Itunes folder to an external hard drive, connected that with the new computer, and told Itunes to look for the library there. It found the library.
The playlists are not there, but that's not a big deal.
The songs I tried to transfer to the new computer are still there, with the "!" tag, meaning they won't play. No big deal. I deleted all the "!" because the songs were there in files without the "!".
    Final problem, I hope.
I ended up with hundreds of duplicate copies. Both dupes play. Again, no big deal other than the annoyance of having to delete the dupes.
Next step, after I have completed the deletion of the dupes.
    1. Recreate the play lists manually, using my Ipod as the guide.
    2. Then sync the Ipod with the new computer library, and all will be will.
Am I right? Or is there possible trouble?

  • How can I revert to the prior version 9pre-3.6.13 update of firefox, as the new oone is causing more trouble than it's worth?

The 3,6,13 update has disabled real player and occasionally locks up my mouse while in firefox. I don't see the advantages of the update if it's causing this much trouble with other software.

Changing versions often does not cure problems, but it does increase risks.

The first step in troubleshooting that may be to identify the tab or page involved, then try Firefox with only the newtab page and the problem page open.
IIRC Firefox is intended to continue streaming audio even if a tab does not have focus. That enables users to stream audio in the background whilst browsing. What you hear may be intended behaviour.

  • HT2509 Why has apple not ditch font book yet? The software causes more problems than it is worth using.

How can I ditch font book and remove from my computer? It causes nothing but problems and I prefer to use Font Reserve which runs smooth on my Macbook Pro with Retina.

iOS4 has been working fine for me.
    What troubleshooting have you done?
As far as the app, have you contacted the developer to let them know that their game crashes in iOS4?

  • 10.5.4 seems to have more problems than previous versions

i am experiencing a lot more crashes of adobe photoshop (still on cs2) after the installation of leopard 10.5.4. this is very frustrating - random functions start spinning for minutes and then crashes the application. this happens now several times a day.
there are also evidently new issues regarding wireless connections.
anybody who can share these experiences?

CS2 is not rated for Mac OS X 10.5. Consider yourself lucky to have been able to run it on any version of 10.5. You were living on borrowed time while it still ran while you were updating it. CS3 is needed for better (it still isn't perfect) Mac OS X 10.5 compatibility.
As for wireless issues, there have ALWAYS been wireless issues. People just don't know how to isolate them. They have nothing to do with the updates. Data files get corrupted, and make them appear to happen during an update, only because an update expects a healthy system to begin with. If your system is not healthy, don't upgrade until it is healthy. Updates are only for adding new features. They are not there to fix "issues". You need to troubleshoot issues before applying updates.

  • When sending/receiving Mail seems to handl more mails than my traffic

When I press "Get Mail", or when I send a mail, the send/receive activity shows in the lower left corner of the screen.
What makes me wonder is the fact that sometimes "mail activity" for instance says: "getting x mails of 10" although I only receive say, 6 mails in my inbox.
And the same thing happens the other way around. When I send one email, mail-activity could say: "sending 2 of 2 mails" although I am only sending one mail!
Does anybody have an idea as to why this odd behaviour occurs?

I have the same issue. I'm wondering if I'm sending out viruses.
    Is this a common issue?
    Has this been solved?

  • Don't get the iOS 4 upgrade, it causes more problems than it is worth.

-5 minutes ago I was on facebook and my friend called me. I answered the call and then about 15 seconds into the conversation the call crashed and it brought me back to facebook, and the phone marked it as a missed call in the log as if it never occured.
-I tried to go to my texts and the layout of the text interface loaded but the texts did not, ended up having to restart. It still takes almost 5 seconds to load them.
-Tried to play TD Zero and the App just kept crashing. Had to restart. This has never happened before with this app.
-Going between different email accounts lags so bad now it's not even worth the time it takes to use it.
-Pushing home button lags alot, as does going between App menus
-Phone froze while I was on Safari just now, tried to press home button and lock the phone, took about 30 seconds for it to "catch up" with itself. Ended up having to do a hard reset.
This all really does make me want to upgrade to iPhone 4, so I guess Apple accomplished their mission..

  • Is Live Update helpful yet, or still more problems than fixes?

    Hi
my 180 has been running decently for a while now.  The only thing that still makes me want to hang myself is this asinine problem with the sound card occasionally disappearing, requiring an unplugged reboot.
I shut off live update a while back because it seemed to create more problems than it fixed. can anyone confirm whether there is anything in there that addresses the sound card issue?
Also, there appears to be a new BIOS featuring an option to "Enable USB Keyboard Latency".  I am currently using a wireless USB keyboard and mouse with no problems.  Do I care about the new BIOS?
Here's my current version info (mine on the left, MSI's on the right)
    BIOS-   3.3      3.5
    Live VGA Driver-   4467      6681
all other are up to date with live update.  I have been very gun shy about letting it update these, since it seemed to cause so much trouble over the summer.  Can anyojne shed some light on whether these updates are necessary?
    tia!

okay, i guess it is a deluxe model. i initially thought the deluxes were the ones that could run dvds in hifi mode.
anywho, it finally lost the sound card again.  it was an interesting feeling being excited about it for once, because i could continue this thread.
the speaker icon in the taskbar disappeared, and the nvidia drivers vanished from "sound, video, and game controllers"  device manager (both nforce codec and nforce processor). msi live update doesn't find anything new, but just for giggles i clicked "update driver" from the properties tab on both, and windows was able to find new drivers.
at this point, i assume that noone has found a solution, so I'll keep updating this thread for those who are fellow sufferers.
Another thought on the heat issue, the outside temps hit 66 degrees fahrenheit today (who said january?), so i wonder if that raised the temp in the cabinet just enough?

  • ITunes 8.1 Can't Seem to do More Than One Thing at a Time

I upgraded to 8.1 and now, rather than a "faster" iTunes experience as was advertised on Apple's website, iTunes can't seem to do more than one thing at a time without locking up the application completely. For instance, when trying to download podcasts if I choose to hit more than one "Get" button at a time iTunes will freeze up until the first podcast has completely downloaded. During this time I cannot access any other screen in iTunes at all.
This freezing of iTunes also occurred while I was trying to sync my iPhone 3G. I received the Calendar sync error that a few other people have mentioned on the forum and wanted to turn off Calendar sync (since I don't use it and don't understand why iTunes turned it on by default, apparently, after the upgrade) but I had to wait for my iPhone 3G to completely sync before I could gain access to any of the tabs in the iPhone sync window.
So, basically it seems like the new version of iTunes (8.1) really doesn't like to be bothered while it is trying to copy data from one place to another.
    Any ideas?

I'm using Vista Ultimate 64-bit and iTunes 8.1 installed OK, but required a restart of the entire OS after upgrading. It takes forever to launch, clicking on certain items (like applications) causes itunes to freeze for about 15-30 seconds before it continues (this is actually something that's been there since the introduction of the app store), I've had to switch my library view to LIST and avoid any sort of album art. Using album art to view my library causes iTunes to be extremely, obnoxiously unresponsive.
The best part - plugging in my iPhone to sync it... iTunes simply sits there dumbly - doesn't even recognize that I've plugged my iPhone in. So now I can't even sync. QUALITY product, quality. So the app I'm FORCED to use to manage my phone doesn't even work after upgrading. Outstanding.
I'm terrified of uninstalling and reinstalling... the last time I did that with iTunes it jacked my library up... it "lost" all of my music... basically it disassociated all of the music (even the stuff purchased through the itunes store) with the index file so I had to re-import EVERY song and delete the duplicate entry.
I searched a ton of forums looking for any clues as to how I could improve performance... All I run into is apple fan boys flaming any and all forums to the point of PC *****, no Apple *****, and so forth. Extremely unhelpful.
The fact is this - if I wasn't forced to use iTunes to manage my non-jailbroken iPhone 3G, then I'd dump it completely. It is a horrible app. Why punish the customers that haven't gone the route of "jail breaking" their iPhones?
One individual on one of the forums suggested that blue screens, and all the other random errors, including slow performance were due to a lack of RAM. I have 4GB of RAM on my machine I can run a virtual Fedora core 9 machine and a virtual WinXP machine on my Vista x64 box and still not have any performance issues with those two virtuals in the background sucking up system resources, yet with nothing open and less than 50% of my 4GB of RAM in use iTunes performance is abysmal. I have not run into any other application on my Vista machine that performs as badly as iTunes.
And Apple is touting a "64-bit" version of iTunes - it isn't. The applications the 64-bit installer installs are all 32-bit.
So, I'm searching as the two of you are for an answer to horrible performance of iTunes.
Even exiting out of iTunes takes a day and a half... "saving itunes library".... And my "library" isn't that big.

  • It doesn't seem to be as sharp as it is in the "Develop" mode.  This seems to occur more with wide angle than macro.  Any suggestions would be extremely welcome...Norm

Here's my problem: (Lightroom 4)  I will edit a photo in "Develop" to the point where it looks great and I'm satisfied with the results.  Then I click back to "Library" and the photo seems to go a little out of focus.  When I export the photo, it doesn't seem to be as sharp as it is in "Develop" mode.  This seems to occur more with wide angle than macro.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!  Norm

    Okay guys, some good news!
First of all, thanks again to Sean for his suggestion to look inside the transaction log!
Indeed that specific table that I noticed was filling the transaction log, is the largest table in my database. Its size stands at about ~65GB. Like I said earlier, it has no LOB or Overflow columns. But one interesting fact about it is - it had absolutely
no indexes! It was a heap, but it was also partitioned. I didn't know a case like this could cause such problems with shrink? It's weird but it also kinda makes sense in a way.
Anyways, I ran a script to create a partitioned clustered index on that table. That took pretty much all day long due to the table size (almost 7 hours). But once that was finished, shrinking the data file was a breeze!
At least... Until the shrink started "hanging" again because now it started dealing with my
second largest table (~55GB). Like the first one, this one is also a partitioned
heap without any indexes. So I expected this to happen. I guess the solution this time will be the same: Create a clustered index.
Does this make sense to you? A partitioned heap table causing such heavy workload to SHRINK, but when it's moved to a clustered index, suddenly it flies?
