Duplicate songs in itunes library

Hy,
I have had some issues with my computer. in that all my music is on an external hard drive. Itunes had located all the music on this. I plugged out the external hard drive for use elsewhere and when i plugged it back in it was given a different drive location. I mistakenly imported everything to itunes again but now i have 2 copies of every song on itunes. one that does not work as the drive is not there and one copy that does work. How do i clean i tunes up of songs it cannot locate

Here's one way of doing it:
Using a playlist to collect dead tracks.
Create new regular playlist – Playlist1
Select whole library and drag to Playlist1
Create new Smart Plsylist with the rule: Playlist is not Playlist1
This playlist should contain all the dead tracks

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • I have lots of duplicate songs in ITunes. How can I tell which ones were purchased vs ripped?

I am trying to delete duplicate songs in iTunes library. How can I tell which ones were iTunes purchases and which ones I ripped from CD's.

If you turn on the Kind column your purchases will read Purchased AAC audio file or Protected AAC audio file.
BTW I've written a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates. See this  thread for background.

Not a good idea! The "show duplicates" feature shows "all" duplicate tracks, but you only want to delete the "extra" copies, not the "originals".
I've written a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates. See this  thread for background, including how to delete the extra tracks manually if you prefer.

  • How to Delete Duplicate Songs in iTunes 8

Is there an easy way to delete duplicate songs in iTunes 8?
A friend of mine with a large CD collection and I share music. The trouble is that in the process of exchanging music we have created quite a number of duplicates.
Is there a way to automate identifying and removing duplicate songs?

    hi,
you aren't missing this. Show duplicates is NOT a tool to allow to simply select all and hit deleted. It is showing you the duplicates, one beside the other, to allow you to discriminate two songs having the same name but that may not be duplicate. For exemple, they may be two different version of a same song and that you want to keep them. For this reason, automated process are somehow risky to loose also song that you want to keep.
however, if you still want to proceed with an automated script, you can find some at http://dougscripts.com/itunes/.
Personnally, I would still discriminate duplicated songs manually by reviewing the list of "show duplicate" to avoid deletion of song I wish to keep. I also have a quite large library and found many songs having the same name and not being duplicates.

How can I view duplicate songs in iTunes 11?

If needed press ctrl-b to reveal the menu bar. Use Shift-View > Show Exact Duplicates to reveal the duplicates. Keep one of each repeated group of files and don't send to the recycle bin unless you are sure that there are multiple files on the disc as opposed to multiple entries to the same file.
There is also my DeDuper script if you don't want to do it by hand. This can preserve ratings, play counts, playlist membership, etc. which are lost in a manual clean up. Please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping. See this thread for background on deduping and the script.

How to delete all duplicate songs in Itunes in one step?

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here: Find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership, or that sometimes the same file can be represented by multiple entries in the library and that deleting one and recycling the file will break the other.

  • How can I delete duplicate songs in Itunes ?

How can i delete duplicate songs in Itunes ?

I have the same problem, where my music library shows duplicates of just about everything I put in iTunes now. It began about a month ago. As far as looking at Date Added, well they are duplicates all put on at the same time. It isn't a matter of the title showing up later, or my having accidentally added the same song twice (say, from different sources or compilations). This is a problem with Apple I think because it just began a month ago and I changed no settings, nor did I do anything else. It just began to happen out of the blue. Anyone know about this?

  • Converting to MP3 without showing duplicate songs in iTunes?

I have a decent song collection on my MBP which I've imported direct from CDs over the years. I've always imported the files in a lossless format (pretty sure its AIFF from memory) but now I want to convert several of the tracks to MP3 so I can fit more tracks on my iPhone and also so I can load them onto a USB drive to be played through my car stereo (which is only compatible with MP3s)
I am familiar with how to go about the conversion but the problem is that I don't want two copies of each track to show up in my library. I usually view my tracks by Artist which lists all artists in the left pane and all songs in the right pane with the tracks displayed under each album. When I convert to MP3 it shows both versions of the track but doesn't say which format each one is in.
Ideally I'd like to display only the AIFF versions of the tracks. Is there any way to only show particular file types or can anyone think of a workaround?
Unfortunately since I would be syncing my iPhone with the MP3 versions of the tracks I can't simply delete them after I've loaded them onto my phone.

There are a couple of methods to accomplish what you want to do.
    1. Connect your iPhone to your computer via USB/Thunderbolt and in the Summary panel for the iPhone in iTunes select the option to "convert higher bit rate songs to..." This will automatically down-convert the lossless files for you without putting duplicates in the iTunes library.
    2. Use Smart Playlists to display the file types you want to see. Set it up like so:
Additionally if you have ripped the in AIFF you might want to consider cross-converting the files to Apple Lossless. Using this script can help with the process: http://dougscripts.com/162

  • Deleting a song from iTunes library and hard drive on Itunes 11.0

how do i delete a song from iTunes library and hard drive on Itunes 11.0 at the same time.

    Hello CleveCo, Inc
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
At some point in time, you may have selected the option to prevent that dialog from appearing again when trying to delete tracks from your library. To reset all of iTunes warning dialogs, click the Edit drop down menu and choose Preferences from the list (on a Mac it is *iTunes -> Preferences* ). When the window pops up, head over to the Advanced tab and click the *Reset Warnings* button. Then quit iTunes and relaunch it. That do the trick for you?

  • HT1386 iPhone won't sync with iTunes. It says iTunes can not add songs to iPhone because no songs in iTunes library can be copied to iPhone. Help!!!! What should I do

iPhone won't sync with iTunes and It says iTunes can not add songs to iPhone because no songs in iTunes library can be copied to iPhone. Help!!!! What should I do. I tried everything!
I need to add my music to my iPhone from iTunes but its not working!

First off try and go into your IPhone manually through My Computer and cut photos or anything you can through the device to be able to free space up so that you can continue to do what you want to do with ITunes. This way you will be able to create a backup or do what you have to do to manage your information, photos and texts on your device a little better.

  • Just got iphone 5-only syncs a few songs from itunes library. some songs on ipad. would like them all on new iphone

Please help!  I have a new iPhone. Have some songs from iTunes library on iPad and only a few transferred to new phone when synced. Tried deleting songs from iPad and they went to iCloud.  So now I have songs in iCloud on iPad and some songs on iPhone. Help! I want ALL iTunes library on new phone.

I hope I'm not too confusing--to clarify: I have iTunes library on the computer. When I got the iPad, most of them transferred to that. I read somewhere on here how to delete those songs and they are now 500+ songs in iCloud...I think. Tried putting the iTunes library onto new iPhone 5s a few days ago and only 149 out of 1100 songs transferred. HOw can I get my whole library from the computer to my new phone?  I don't need them on my iPad.
