Duplicate songs message
I sometimes receive the following message when ripping from CDs.
"One or more of the songs you have selected to import have already been imported. Do you want to replace existing songs and import again?"
Where is the option to see which songs are conflicting?
You don't need to compare what you want to import with all songs in your library. Narrow the search by clicking on 'Artist' to see everything you have under artist's name; further narrow search by clicking 'Album'. In either case it's easy to see at a glance whether you already have a particular song.

I've consolidates my music in Itunes 11.01. Playlists are just getting crazy with duplicates.
I want to eliminate duplicate music files, as well as eliminate the references in the interface.
Then sync my new IPad.
When I manually erase a duplicate in Windows Explorer, I'm left with a "!" indication in Itunes that the file cannot be found... duh.
I want to find either an easier way to eliminate duplicates without Windows Explorer, or
a way to select all the "!" references in Itunes interface and delete.
Help please from a completely organized person who hates Apples "intelligence" at thinking it knows what I want, and not providing
adequate help under "remove duplicates" in its help index.

I would do it manually. As you can see from turingtest2's post, some duplicates are not really duplicates.
I would also review how you add media to iTunes. It should not be producing all that many duplicates. -

Try activating the sidebar, menu bar, and status bar and see if this is close enough to the previous version to make you content. It is easier than downgrading and eventually you will be forced to run a newer iTunes unless you have an endless supply of the model computer you currently own.
You may be able to go back with Time Machine but this may involve restoring other items too (https://discussions.apple.com/message/20441404). Alternatively:
Back up your computer first, in case the unexpected happens.
Quit iTunes.
Get iTunes 10.7 from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1576 or the direct download link at: http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes10/041-7195.20120912.d3uzQ/iTunes10.7.dmg
Do a few preparatory steps by making sure all iTunes components are not running and cleaning old files. See https://discussions.apple.com/message/20475394. Do steps 3 and 4. Steps 6-8 may be also useful but I don't know if they are essential. Some of the other steps are not necessary, duplicate steps listed later in my post or are perhaps even unhelpful in the process.
Replace the iTunes 11 application with iTunes 10.7. Simply dragging the application to the trash may not work. Lion (OSX 10.7) and newer systems have iTunes integrated into the operating system and deleting is a bit more involved. Two ways to do this are:
1. (Easier) Use the shareware Pacifist utility (http://www.charlessoft.com/) to install iTunes 10.7 including all associated system files. Details at http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=16400819&postcount=6
2. (More work) Check this reference on how to delete the iTunes application itself:

After deleting the application there may be other files that need downgrading too. See the note about error -42408 at the end of this post. You may want to tuck these away somewhere safe until you have completed the installation of iTunes 10.7. I have not tested this but ideally if newer versions are not found then the installer will put in the old versions. This may include these files in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ which apparently get updated by iTunes 11:

After doing one of the two procedures above you will have to rescue the most recent old iTunes library from your iTunes > Previous Libraries folder. Rename it "iTunes Library.itl" and replace the existing one in the iTunes folder. A newer version of iTunes irreversibly updates your library file so you have to replace it with the old one or you will get an error message. Note, this will revert your library to the version at the time of the upgrade and you will have to update any changes made since. See:

Duplicate songs in iTunes after switching to new computer
I recently changed from an old Win XP computer to a new Win 8.1 computer. While it seems that Microsoft attempted to simplify file management and make a lot of it automatic, I honestly don't understand how it all works.
I'm sure it was probably user error, but somehow now many of my songs - mostly my MP3s - are in iTunes twice.
When I right-click on the duplicate songs, I can see that they're in two locations. But what I don't know is if they're in two "different" physical locations on the hard drive or if they're in two different "virtual" locations that Win 8.1 sees as two different places, though they may be the same. I hope that made sense.
To make it more clear (hopefully), these are the 2 locations:
C:\users\anthony\music\mp3\songname (song name here)
C:\documents and settings\anthony\mydocuments\mymusic\mp3\songname (same song name here)
Are the songs actually on my hard drive twice or does iTunes just see them that way. And how do I fix it so I have only one instance of each song onmy hard drive and one instance of each song in iTunes?
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.It turns out that the problem was that I had reached my limit of five authorized systems on my iTunes user, and had to de-authorize my old system and authorize the new one. The error message could be a lot more helpful....

IPod nano won't sync; dreaded "duplicate file" message
Suddenly, my old but heretofore functioning iPod Nano won't sync radio podcasts. Gets the "duplicate file" message. I have tried resetting multiple times; reinstalled iTunes, changed the port, checked for plug-ins (no iToner) etc. Ran diagnostic; it fails the device sync test, saying no iPod touch found.
I have seen some other complaints about this.
Is there a solution? I have done most of the troubleshooting steps but did not restore iPod to virginity (hoping to avoid reloading songs onto it).

Duplicate Songs On iPod When Adding New Playlist?
Hi All-
I'm experiencing a new problem that is driving me crazy. It seems to have started after the last iPod updater but that could just be coincendence. Now, whenever I copy a playlist from iTunes to my video iPod, it will copy most of the song files as well (not all of them but a good portion) - making many duplicate song entries on my iPod that I then have to go in and delete?

Duplicate songs after moving to new PC
I moved to a new PC yesterday and copied the "My Documents" folder from my old PC to my new PC. When I connected my iPod to my new PC a noticed I had duplicate versions of all my songs. I have LOTS of songs and wonder what the easist way to fix my problem. I really want to avoid deleting the duplicate songs one by one.

when a QuickTime uninstall throws that message at folks, it's usually best to try completely scraping the itunes and QuickTime program files and installation configuration information from the PC, and doing a careful staged reinstall afterwards.

How do I get rid of duplicate songs on iPhone?
I have the iPhone 4 and with one of the recent updates, my iTunes changed. Now when my phone syncs with my iTunes library, it has a lot of duplicate songs showing up on the phone. I went through manually and deleted them off my phone, but then when syncing again recently, they were all put on there again. What can I do to get duplicates off there for good?

Some of my songs are listed twice on my iPod itself. However, when I plug the iPod into my computer, the songs don't show up twice in iTunes when I click on device/music. How do I get rid of the duplicate songs on my iPod?

Are you syncing your songs right off of itunes itself? because it should be syncing over to the ipod however it is listed in itunes. -

Thanks!When you're looking at the "song" section of your iPhone, you want to swipe to the right on the song you wish to remove. A red button should pop up saying "delete". When you click that button, the song will no longer be there.

Not a good idea! The "show duplicates" feature shows "all" duplicate tracks, but you only want to delete the "extra" copies, not the "originals".

How do I delete duplicate songs from my iphone 4s
I have tried re-syncing with my iTunes on my PC and it doesn't work. Just says "syncing" and quickly goes through the steps, and everything on the iphone is still the same. I can delete albums from my collection on my PC and they delete from the iphone, but the duplicate songs are not showing up on the PC and they are in the phone and I can't see any way to get rid of them without deleting the whole album from my collection.
I just had this happen when I wanted "normalized" music on my iPhone because I am no satisfied with sound check. All my songs still had different volumes. I turned off the cloud on my phone and added music with USB. I turned the cloud back on and I got the duplicate issue. Here is what I did to fix it:
Turn off Match on phone
Update match in iTunes from the "store" menu (see below for why this might be REALLY important.
Connect phone
Check "manually manage" in iTunes from the first tab when you click your phone in the left pane
Open the "tree" for you iPhone in iTunes by clicking the triangle.
Select "music" in that tree.
Delete all the Music from the phone.
Sync it.
Eject phone.
Turn match back on and download music via the iPhone but this takes a while.
or I just reconnected it, then went to the music tab for the phone ticked the sync option and checked the playlists I wanted. I synced it. I then made sure "manually manage" was checked in first tab, then went into the left pane and deleted the playlists. This leaves the music on the iPhone but not the playlists. I ejected and turned on match on the phone.
My guess is there is a glitch where identical playlists from the cloud seemed to conflict with the ones physically on the phone and / or iTunes match could not match the physical files on the phone. It seems my metadata for the files "seemed" different than the ones in the cloud. Running RealPlay gain on my library is suspect for my issue so if something happened on your computer that changed the data about your files even without you knowing, this might be the issue. It is merely a hypothesis but it seems logical. Resyncing match then putting the newly understood match on the phone seems to resolve my issue. -
How do I delete duplicate songs
A while back I when I opened iTunes I was prompted to do something relating to how my library was organized. Unfortunatley I didn't read it very closely and just click OK and it began to duplicate almost every song in my library so now I have 3 copies of each song in each folder. Not sure what I did but it's taking up tons of space and I need to get it back to normal. Anyone have any ideas?
EN You could delete all duplicate songs manually or use a software who will do that (but they are often bad or spams...).

After importing my 300 or so CDs into iTunes, I found I have tons of duplicate songs.
Example: I have a song that came in a original album, then in again in a "Greatest Hits" album, then again in a "Hits of the 80's" album, and again in a soundtrack album. I have now have 4 copies of the exact same song.
How do I delete duplicate songs, but keep a link in their original albums back to the single copy of the song left, so it will play in each album in sequence as if it were still there?
I don't think this currently exists, but as my library keeps growing the duplicates keep growing. It would be nice if Apple sees this and adds a way to link songs to multiple albums.
I don't want to create a custom playlist for every album that has a duplicate song or two (I'd have dozens of playlists) - thought about fixing it that way but not really practical.To my knowledge, there is no way of doing what you want. The only workaround is to create playlists for the other albums containing the track, but that isn't practical for most people.
