Duplicate songs on disk (not in iTunes)

I have some of my iTunes directories, where iTunes puts songs that I've ripped from CDs - that have multiple copies of the same song.
e.g.
01 Mrs Robinson.m4a
01 Mrs Robinson 1.m4a
01 Mrs Robinson 2.m4a
01 Mrs Robinson 3.m4a
01 Mrs Robinson 4.m4a
How do I trace these down and delete the ones that aren't seen by iTunes?

If you're certain that those songs are no longer on your computer, check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer.
There's also another method I've seen posted. I've successfully tested this across several different Windows PCs.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
However it appears that no playlists or any other info such as ratings/last played etc will transfer.
If this is important to you, you may want to use other options.
There's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer.

  • My ipod has duplicate songs on it, but my iTunes does not.  How do I remove the duplicates from my ipod?

After the last couple updates to my ipod it has created duplicates of songs to it.  My iTunes does not contain any duplicates, but my ipod does.  Is there any way I can remove the duplicate songs from my ipod?

If the duplicate copies all have the same date then you could do show duplicates, then sort by date added, and delete those with the new date.

  • ITunes Match on my iPhone shows songs that are not in iTunes on my Mac and PC.

Yes, I know that deleting songs from iTunes does not necessarily mean they are deleted from iTunes Match, too. Not checking the box when deleting songs is definitely not why this is occurring, so hear me out. My Mac hosts my main iTunes library. What I do there, is synched with iTunes Match. In iTunes in Boot Camp, I have no local files, so all that iTunes on Windows shows me, are the songs that are matched with and uploaded to iTunes Match. As far as I can tell, it's exactly the same as my main library on my Mac.
It's a different story on my iPhone, though. There are songs that show up on my iPhone that I have deleted on my Mac. Some several times, even. A little while ago, I ripped one of my CDs and had it matched with iTunes Match. I made some changes to the metadeta afterwards, though, so I deleted the songs and added and matched them again. And again, that same day. I did the same things with a single song.
And now I'm stuck with three copies of the album and of the song in iTunes Match. But the weird thing is, that only one of each shows up in iTunes on Windows. That library, again, does not have any local music; it only shows what's in iTunes Match. I have tried disabling iTunes Match on my iPhone, I have deleted all local content on my iPhone, I have deleted the album and the song – the files that are showing up multiple times on my iPhone – from my Mac, updated iTunes Match, re-added the files and updated Match again. Unfortunately, none of this helped.
After deleting the files and updating Match, I saw only two instances of the album and the song in question, instead of three. After re-adding them and updating Match again, there were three of each again. That means that there are two instances of the album and of the song 'stuck' in iTunes Match. And yet they don't show up in iTunes on either OS X or in Windows.
Why is this happening? And, more importantly, how can I fix it? In the grand scheme of things, this is obviously a minor problem, but it's annoying me a lot nonetheless.

Is there really nobody else with this problem? Really?

  • Adding songs that are not in iTunes folder on hard drive

I'm trying to drag and drop songs from a hard drive onto by 120G ipod classic. I keep many of my MP3s on a separate drive that is dedicated just to music files, but this means they are not in my iTunes Music folder (C:...\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music).
Basically, my problem is that I can drag some songs over but not others. I don't get any sort of error, but when I drag most songs onto the iPod (using iTunes 8.2.1.6) the status at the top will quickly flash "syncing ipod, do not disconnect", but the songs are never added to the pod.
Can anyone help? iTunes is set to Manually manage the songs (as opposed to syncing) since I don't necessarily want them sync'd!
    Thanks for any help!

It wasn't clear from your post, are you trying to bypass iTunes entirely and drop songs (native files) directly to the iPod? You can keep songs outside of the iTunes Music Folder, and you can drag songs from your iTunes library to the iPod, but you can't drag a song's native file directly onto the iPod -- you have to add the songs to iTunes first, then add the songs from iTunes to the iPod.
You can still have your music in iTunes but keep the native files organized how you want them outside of the iTunes Music Folder. Just de-select the options "Keep iTunes music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" (see your iTunes Preferences on the Advanced tab).
If I mis-read what you're doing and you really are trying to add to the iPod from iTunes, then the problem might be with the native files. Do they play OK in iTunes? What version are the tags?

    Hi,
What is the iCloud status of these tracks?
You can add icloud status column to song view - go to menu > view> view options and tick box. This will tell you what has been Matched, Uploaded, Purchased, Inelligible, Duplicate or Waiting.

  • Songs on ipod not on itunes

I have several old songs which are on my ipod but in my itunes list will not play because there appears to be no original source file for them.
Is there a way to get them back off my ipod onto my computer so that I can then back them up to a CD-ROM?
I've tried to do it with sync but it doesn't work. I've tried to copy and past them but the paste option isn't available on the playlist on my computer after I copy them from the playlist on the ipod.
I want to do this because I am about to upgrade to a new pc and want to transfer my itunes songs to the new one from the old one.

iTunes will only let you copy your purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

  • Songs on ipod not in itunes

The music that is on the ipod is the same on the computer. The only thing is the I can play all of the music on the ipod without any problems, but I can play less then half the music on the computer. Itunes keeps asking to locate the music because the original cannot be found. When I plug the ipod into the computer it updates only what the computer can play. It doesn't touch any of the rest of the songs. The computer shows the name of the song that can't be played that way it doesn't get deleted from the ipod. I hope I made sense with all that. The question is if itunes can't find the original songs to play and the ipod has the originals that do play is it possible to fix the problem by copying the music from the ipod back to itunes? If so would you please tell me how to fix this problem?

  • How to remove duplicate songs from Itunes

I've consolidates my music in Itunes 11.01. Playlists are just getting crazy with duplicates.
I want to eliminate duplicate music files, as well as eliminate the references in the interface.
    Then sync my new IPad.
When I manually erase a duplicate in Windows Explorer, I'm left with a "!" indication in Itunes that the file cannot be found... duh.
I want to find either an easier way to eliminate duplicates without Windows Explorer, or
a way to select all the "!" references in Itunes interface and delete.
Help please from a completely organized person who hates Apples "intelligence" at thinking it knows what I want, and not providing
adequate help under "remove duplicates" in its help index.
    Thanks.

I would do it manually.  As you can see from turingtest2's post, some duplicates are not really duplicates.
I would also review how you add media to iTunes.  It should not be producing all that many duplicates.

  • Using Genius with Songs on iPod but not in iTunes

Of all the music on my iPod, only about a third of it is also on my computer in iTunes. As far as I can tell, Genius only works with the music that is in iTunes. If I try to make a playlist with any song that is not in iTunes, then it can't do it.
Does anyone know if there is anyway to update Genius directly on the iPod, rather than just with iTunes?

can u get genius on an updated ipod or just the second generation?
