Duplicate songs under 'Artists' category

I do not know how this happened with my iPod, but after one of the last times I synced my iPod, some songs under the artist tab were duplicated. I have tried to fix the issue in many different ways.
I went to the songs and manually changed the information in the properties of each song so the artists are exactly the same, ie, no deviate spellings, and also erased the album title so that all of the songs would be listed under unknown album. Also, in the iPod window, I have cleared the album title and made sure that the artists' were all spelled correctly.
My iPod shows that songs are repeated under 'unknown album' and the correct album that the song originates from.
THis is getting really annoying because my OCD is really bad with my iPod and I want it to look all nice and clean and perfect, but with this all happening, it looks like a huge jumbled mess.
Is there some secret solution that I just have yet to discover that will fix this??? Please help!!!

As far as I see it if you want everything organised nicely then each track should have at minimum a name, artist, album title and album artwork. See my previous post on Grouping Tracks Into Albums for tips on preventing multiple covers, multiple listings for the same artist etc.

  • Song and Albums Synch, but Unable to Find Song Under Artist Name

I have a 20GB vidoe iPod. All my songs from my online library, which I purchased on Itunes, synch to my iPod. However, I cannot locate a song under the Artist category, because the Artist name is not listed. I can find, however, the song if I search for the Album or the Song name itself. So, in a nut shell, the songs are on my iPod, but the Artist name is not listed for that song. Help.

It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a multiple song info window, and from there you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
If you have, select 'no' instead and click 'ok'. Do this with any CD that has this issue. This will alter the info in iTunes, and you should then connect your iPod and synchronize the changes.
The problem arises because the information contained on the Gracenote CD Data Base (where iTunes gets all it's album/artist/track info from), is sometimes incorrect. It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not.

  • Missing songs under artist but still in songs

I have uploaded all of my songs and in Itunes all the songs have artists, but they dont show up under that artist name in the ipod. Example in itunes the song is called Charlie and artist is red hot chili peppers but on my Ipod it is not under red hot chili peppers. But if i search for the song under all songs it is still there. Can anyone help?????

    They need album names.
See: Some songs don't don't show under artist on my iPod.
From what I understand, once you add a second album name for that artist even for a single song, ALL the rest of the songs should now show up under that artist, even those without album names.
Providing the spelling for the artists is exactly the same of course.

  • IPod wont show songs under artists

    Referring to this website: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302773
    i have a question:
I am experiencing the same problem as described on that page. Only thing is, it is much more severe for me. I'm guessing that over 100 of my 900 songs wont show under artists.
Yet, most of my songs do not have an album name.
First question, why do only a part of those songs that don't have an album name not show under artists on my iPod?
Secondly, is there no easier way to get this problem fixed than giving the songs an album name? Firstly, it's impossible for me to know what songs do show and which are not shown under artists on my iPod, i only know a few. It's not like im going to go through all 900 songs to find this out. Secondly, i do not know the correct album name for each song. If i fix an album name, i want it to be correct and not made up in my head. Thirdly, it takes ages and ages to name albums for all songs that do not have album names.
So is there any easier way?

"First question, why do only a part of those songs that don't have an album name not show under artists on my iPod?"
It's a bug as far as I know, possibly in the future some update or change to iTunes and/or the iPod software will rectify it.
"Secondly, is there no easier way to get this problem fixed than giving the songs an album name"
At the moment, no there's not.
"it takes ages and ages to name albums for all songs that do not have album names"
Actually you can do it quite quickly. Sort your library by Album to bring all the blanks together. Click on the first song in the list and holding down the Shift key click on the last. This will highlight all in between . Right click on the list and chose Get Info, say yes when you are asked if you want to update multiple items. Put None or Unknown or any title of your choice in the album field and click OK. This should sort the problem out for you.
There's also one other thing that that contributes to songs not appearing under Artist on the iPod and that is if the song is marked as part of a compilation.
If the tracks are ticked in the Get Info>Info tab as part of a compilation, they will not appear under Artist on the iPod. Highlight a song in iTunes that you know is not appearing correctly on your iPod. Right click on it and choose Get Info and click the Info tab (alternatively choose Get Info from the File menu), if "Part of a Compilation" is marked untick it and afterwards update your iPod, you should find it now appears as normal. Compilations are stored in a separate folder in iTunes so the songs don't appear inside the normal Artist>Album folder which may be why this happens.

  • Duplicate songs all over the place!

Ok, first let me give you the layout.
    16 GB iPod Nano
Dell Inspiron E1505 with Vista Home Premium
    Linksys WR310N (GigE switch)
Sony Vaio running Windows Server 2003
I have ALL of my music located on a shared partition on my Windows 2003 server. I have mapped a network drive (M) to a folder containing all my organized music on this server. Organized meaning.........root folders are Genres (Rock, Pop, Country, Contemporary Chistian, i.e.), with Artist / Band folders under the Genres folders. And under the Artist / Band folders, are the album (yes, old school) names with songs under there. Make sense?? ok. Moving on.
I have uninstalled iTunes numerous times in an effort to consolidate and prevent duplicate songs / albums / artists from showing up in my Music list as well as on my iPod.
In order to put music in my Library > Music folder, I have to Add Folder to Library from the File Menu in iTunes. Not only does this take FOREVER since iTunes has to determine each song, then determine some gapless info, but it hasn't even moved anything yet.
Once it is done, I am able to move music to my playlists, and sync. Syncing takes an eternity as well since it is copying all the mp3's to my iPod.
Now in order to remove OR add music to my iPod, this whole adventure has to be repeated, and then duplicates start appearing in my Library > Music folder.
I have verified several albums NOT to be duplicate on my share, but they show up numerous times in my Library! Why is this??? This means I have to go thru thousands of songs to determine which ones are duplicates in an effort to NOT put the songs on my iPod twice.
Why is it that I am not able to view my iPod as a piece of "disk" LIKE IT IS! This is nothing more than a glorified thumb drive with a small OS. I should be able to use Winders Explorer to remove and/or add music with a drag / drop option. Why is that I have to SYNC this thing ever time I want to take 5 songs off, and add 2. This should be a 5 second ordeal, not 2 hours!!!
Now that being sad, is there an easier way to do this??? Is there something I am missing............or not doing correctly?? I used to use an app called Anapod with my older iPod, but they seem to have went 'under'.........as their URL is no longer active. Sad thing..............cuz that app was the BEST!
    Plz advise............Thanks

  • De-cluttering tip: Is there a way to prevent a track from showing up under "Artist" while still being able to view the artist info when I play the song by Album?

    I asked this question here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15312099#15312099
It was suggested I re-post in this forum, seeing as the problem may be specific to the Touch.
So, I have lots of "compilation" albums that include songs by various artists (for example, Pitchfork's top 500 singles of the decade). I usually select my music by "Artist," and now my ipod is super cluttered, because now I have hundreds and hundreds of artists listed, many of which I only have one or two songs by from this compilation.
One solution: simply delete the artist information for these large compilations, and then the songs from the compilations will no longer show up under "Artists." Problem is, I would like to know who the artists are when I play the compilation (I simply don't want to have the artists listed under "Artists")
Another solution: I could manually delete the artist info, but paste that info on to the song name. For example, a track that once looked like:
    Artist: Nirvana
    Title: Smells Like Teen Spirit
    Album: Best of the '90s
After my editing, would look like:
    Artist: [blank]
Title: Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
    Album: Best of the '90s
This would solve my problem...but it would literally take hours to do for each and every individual song. Not practical.
Does any one have any other suggestions? It seems like there would be a way to just check a box for what info you want to be listed (ie, I could un-check "Artist," and then the song would no longer be listed by Artist, even though the Artist information would still be retained for reference). Does this option exist?
In the prior thread, someone suggested I mark it as a "compilation" in iTunes. But that did not prevent the individual artists from being listed under "Artists." Someone suggested that I may need to turn "Compilation" to "On" on my iPod. But that does not seem to be an option on the Touch.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks!!

I usually select my music by "Artist," and now my ipod is super cluttered, because now I have hundreds and hundreds of artists listed, many of which I only have one or two songs by from this compilation.
Why not set the iPod to show Compilations?
In Settings select Main menu (or Music menu) and check Compilations. (You can do so for both if you desire.)
Now all of the Artists that only appear in compilation albums won't appear in Artists.
To get to the Artists that only appear in compilation albums open Compilations in your Main Menu or Music Menu (or either).

  • Songs Not Showing Up Under Artists

So ive put my entire iTunes music library onto my brand new 5th generation Ipod, yet a bunch of my songs arent listed under their appropriate artist. For example, i have a bunch of ACDC songs on my iTunes that are all labelled "ACDC" under Artists with the exact same spelling....yet only one song shows up under ACDC on my iPod. I know that the rest of the songs are on my Ipod because i can reach them by scrolling through by song name, but I'd like them to show up under their appropriate artist too. Any suggestions?
    dunno?   Windows XP

This isn't foolproof but there are usually two things that contribute to songs not appearing under Artist on the iPod, both due to information either in or missing from the Get Info>Info tab against the song in iTunes. 1) the song is marked as part of a compilation or 2) it is missing an album name.
If the tracks are ticked in the Get Info>Info tab as part of a compilation, they will not appear under Artist on the iPod. • Songs not appearing under artists

    Hi,
I'm going to try and explain this the best way I can,
On my Ipod (30GB), some songs do not appear under the artist.
    Example:
I have two songs by Christina Aguilera, A is from the album "Stripped" and the other one (B) I haven't listed any album name (therefore it is Blank). So on my ipod when I go into:
    [ Music -> Artist -> Christina Aguilera -> All ]
    only song A is shown.
But if I go into [Music -> Songs ] I can find A and B...
    So you see my problem,
If you have any idea, please answer,
    Regards,

  • Songs not showing up under "Artist" or "Album" catego

I have a Zen:Vision M 30GB (uploading with WMP0) and when I upload songs into it, I can go into the "Artist" category and see the names of the bands I uploaded but when I click on their name, the folder is empty. I know the songs are on there because I can view and listen to them in "tracks".
Anyone know how to fix this?

It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.

  • Song not showing up under Artist listing

Let's take for example a song entitled "Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out of my Head".
The song is in my iTunes. File name is all correct, all that jazz. When I go under "Artists" to "Kylie Minogue", the song doesn't show up there.
But if I go under the setting of "Songs", "Can't Get You Out of my Head" is listed there. I click on play, it works just fine, has the artist listed as "Kylie Minogue", but still not listed when I go to "Artists".
Anyone have any idea what this is all about?? Thanks!

Make sure it has an album name.
    Also, look in Compilations.
