Duplicate tracks on ipod

why is the show duplicate tracks unusable (in gray) when i am clicked on my ipod library in itunes?
i want to be able to see my duplicate tracks in my ipod library only - not my whole itunes library. is this possible?
ipod   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

I don't believe it is possible (okay, now someone prove me wrong) to load the same song file with no differences, into the iPod twice.
I specifically wrote "song file" because you could have the same song as two different files such as if you imported the same CD twice. You could also have the same song by the same group from two differnt albums.
I just tried to drag a song to the iPod which is already loaded. Nothing happened.

  • Finding Duplicate Tracks on iPod

Is there someway to automatically find duplicate tracks on my iPod?
I know I can do this in iTunes for tracks on my hard drive, but I need to find them on my iPod.
    Thanks

    Hello bj4mac,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Unless you manually manage your iPod's content, the duplicates in your iTunes library should and will be the same duplicates you will find on your iPod.
You might be able to use a program such as [YamiPod|http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/home> to help you find and remove duplicate tracks. Check it out.
Otherwise, the only other method available for locating these duplicates is to go through each of your songs manually, probably through the Songs section of your iPod.

  • Someone please settle this problem once and for all! (Duplicate Tracks)

I had an iPod about two years ago and ended up getting a different mp3 player. I now have a new 5G iPod and am having the same issue I had 2 years ago for the short time I had my old iPod. Duplicate tracks showing up in my iPod's library. I searched through these forums and found a lot of people having these problems, but none of the suggestions I read in the other threads seemed to do anything.
This seems to be an underlying problem for a lot of people and I don't understand why Apple would make their players this ********. I've had several other mp3 players in the last 2 years and you put in an artists' name and all the songs appear together under one name and are simply organized by Album, genre, year, etc... but, I loaded all my songs onto the iPod and even though tracks all contain the same artist name I get multiple listings for the same artist.
For instance, if I have several albums all of their filenames contain the artists' name, followed by a dash and then the name of the song. The artist name in the iTunes tag all match exactly as well. So why in the **** do names show up multiple times? I had this problem two years ago and it was never resolved, and I checked all over the boards and just couldn't come to a solution. I'll tell you one thing though, I can't believe it's this hard to get all of one artist under one listing on the player. Kinda dumb.
Please forgive me if this topic has been discussed to death. I just couldn't get anything useful out of any previous topics I looked at.

Alright I just checked my tracks and settings and what not and added some more music now I get a bunch of extra multiple listings. This is so ********. lol! Here is a screenshot of my iPod that I just took. Now this is just dumb because there aren't many ways that you can mess up the spelling in the name 2Pac. It's a 2, a capital P, a lowercase a, and c.
    http://home.comcast.net/~johnnybukkake/iPod_Screenshot.jpg
The first listing gives me almost all his albums just fine. Then for the second listing I get another one of his full albums. And for the last three listings I get a single song in each of them. I mean really, Apple... How does a flaw this stupid rear it's ugly head into so many people's players?!

  • Duplicate Tracks - Time Machine?

I keep getting duplicate track listings and even though I delete them they seem to be continuing to appear. It's not consistent though - some tracks have MANY dupes (7 or more sometimes!), some none, and others just a few.
Is it possible that Time Machine is making them or is it something else? I have a new Nano, the last model Nano, an old model Shuffle, and a Gen 2 iPod Classic 20GB model. Is it the many iPods, Time Machine, or something else? It seems like I can never quite rid myself of iTunes dupes!

Why not just use TM to back up to 2 external drives. TM will alternate between the two when it backs up.
Alternately, you could have a 2 back up strategy like others have using SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner. Both are excellent 3rd party apps to clone your internal drive(s) and both have schedulers.

  • Yep a Duplicate Tracks Question,  Again!

I had a problem with the file structure on my Power Mac becoming unstable and took the machine in for repair. Coincidentally I asked for a WD bigger drive I fitted sometime ago to be the boot drive. As the reason for the disintegrating file structure couldn't be found the old drive is physically disconnected but the data files etc are on the new drive. I was told to open iTunes and drag Users/Me/Library/iTunes/ etc into the open app to rebuild etc. The 'fresh' version of iTunes opened empty and I followed instructions. And ended up with approx 4000 duplicate tracks. I've dragged the whole new library to trash and emptied trash and redone but same again. I can't see any duplicate tracks in finder looking in users/me/music/itunes All the band names and individual tracks are in there and if I look at an individual track the original rip date or purchase date is shown. No double listing of names though.
I've started to go through Duplicate View in iTunes but haven't even made it out of the A's yet and it takes ages. Any ideas where I'm going wrong?
I've copied all to an external drive so am prepared to delete all info and start again if there is a surefire way to do that. If that is the best way.
    Many thanks
PS - I don't even want to think what heartache I'm going to get when I try iPhoto.

  • Smart playlist for duplicate track numbers?

    Hi Folks,
With Regard to smart playlists is there any way to identify duplicate track numbers on the same disc?
During the import process the disc numbers (where it was a dual cd) we simply listed as disc 1 on the import process.
    As a result, some albums have 2 x track 1 and 2 x track 2 etc.
So save me searching through the whole library manually, is there a way to create a smart playlist and search doe duplicate track numbers on the same disc.
In the same light is it possible to search for duplicate artists on the same disc?
    Appreciate your help
    Hope this makes sense.
    Thanks
    Simon.

    Hi Simon,
Missed this thread the first time around.. As Chris says this isn't something that you can pick up with a smart playlist. In principle I could write a script that runs through every track in a selection and notices when the same combination of track number, disc number, album title and album artist comes up. A second pass would then add every track from each affected album to a regular playlist for you to go through and fix up.
In practice when I'm hunting for inconsistencies in the library I've found that stepping through the albums using the column browser is quite effective. In my case I'm generally looking for instances where the same album title is reused by different albums, the obvious example being Greatest Hits, as these jumble together on my iPod classic. When this happens I retitle each album as <Album> - <Album Artist> to separate them. Using the column browser I reckon I can scan through the library at about 2 albums a second, stopping only when something looks amiss.
So, are you still hunting for your misnumbered double albums?

  • How do you delete duplicate tracks off your playlist?!

How do you delete duplicate tracks off your playlist - everytime I connect my hard-drive it adds another of every single track - argh!!!!
I remember there being a 'delete duplicate tracks' option on a much older version of itunes - is this still available and if not if you opt for the 'consolidate library' option will this automatically save to you computer as I have too much music for my laptops memory capacity! On top of that how can I stop this issue from contantly re-occuring everytime I connect my hard-drive?! Apologies if im being thick here.... xX*laura*Xx

You are doing something wrong, iTunes doesn't add tracks to the library unless you ask it to, so there is a problem somewhere in your workflow which is creating the duplicates. For example, having iTunes set up to "Copy files to the iTunes Media folder when adding to library" and then repeatedly adding in a folder from an external drive would do it.
Once you've worked out how to stop creating new duplicates you can look at the issue of deduping what you already have. See this recent post for some thoughts and a script that may prove useful.

  • How can I turn off the sound from the original midi  or audio tracks when I turned on the duplicate tracks for editing ?

How can I turn off the sound from the original midi or audio tracks when I edit or listen to the duplicate tracks in Logic Pro 9 ?
I'm using iMac desktop with Mac OS X Version 10.7.3. Pls advise.

    Dan,
It sounds like one of your preferences has changed.
Go to preferences > audio > general, and make sure "track mute/solo" is set to "CPU saving (slow response)". It is probably set to "Fast " at the moment.
This setting (fast) basically causes immediate muting from the channel strip while your song is in play. This is because the audio is still being read from the hard drive, but the channel strip is simply muted.... like a hardware mixer. When set to "CPU saving", the audio from that track, when muted, is actually stopped from streaming from the hard drive, but there is a couple second delay before the audio is actually muted.
One would think that the fast setting is generally preferable, except when you need to do what you are doing. The only way to keep duplicate copies of channel strips acting independent of one another is to leave this setting on the "CPU saving" setting.
    Hope that helps

  • ITunes 8.1 no longer gives option to skip adding duplicate songs to iPod

When I begin to add songs to my iPod or a playlist, I've noticed that iTunes 8.1 no longer gives me the option (through a small pop-up window) to skip transferring any songs that already exist on that iPod or playlist.
This was a great feature: I could drag a whole set of songs and rely on iTunes to weed out any songs from the transfer that would cause duplicates on my iPod or a new playlist.
The option said something like you are about to add duplicates and allowed me to select "Skip" or "Add".
I can't find this option in Preferences. Has anyone been able to re-enable this?

I have this same problem. Did you find the solution? I sat here and played on iTunes for about 3 hours. I even tried uninstalling and installing it. Nothing works for me.

  • Why can't iTunes track your ipod's serial number when it is synced to iTunes?

I was wondering Why, if your iPod is stolen, iTunes cannot track your ipod's serial number when it is synced to iTunes.. I've had my iPod touch almost a year now and it is registered in my name and everything. This past weekend someone somehow got into my car while at a concert and stole my purse, my ipod, my friend's ipod and wallet.  I didn't think to file a police report because I figuered there would be nothing they can do. Since, a lot of people buy and sell iPods all of the time from one another instead of from a store.  I thought to let it go, but it keeps haunting me, someone has access to a lot of my person information. This hit me when at work, I was using Pandora internet radio, and someone deleted all of my radio stations and added their own. They are still using it till this day and I have no clue what to do, I've changed my password to Pandora even.  I know it's being used via my iPod from my Pandora app, I regreat not downloading the new ios5 on my iPod... So, I really have no further idea of what to do. I contacted Pandora in hopes they could change my account password or delete it or something, I just hope they haven't used any thing else important. I really wish it were possible for iTunes to track an iPods Serial number when the iPod is either synced to iTunes / iTunes store.. If it were possible, I wish they could help me out and at least lock my prior iPod or hopefully delete everything from that.. I don't have much hope in this though :/

Thanks for the suggestions... tried tehm but no luck so I've taken it back. I think I'll try a Samsung (only other ones I've found with a Sleep Function) and move to Audible instead of iTunes. A shame after years of iTunes use but I shouldn't have to spend days getting a product to work. Thanks again.

  • Can you track your ipod touch if stolen

my ipod touch was stolen is there any way i can track it i have the serial number

You can maybe only track the iPod if you had already set up the FindMyiPhone feature. The SN will only help idendify the iPOd if it is found.

  • How Can You Track Your Ipod If Lost Using The Serial Number

How Can You Track Your Ipod If Lost Using The Serial Number?

The find my iphone app has nothong to do with it.
That app simply allow you to find other devices using your ipod.  It has nothing to do with fining the device on which it is installed.
If you set up the find my ipod feature that is built into your ipod and the ipod is on and it is connected to wi-fi and it has not been restored, then you may be able to get an approximate street address using icloud.
    Othrewise, it cannot be tracked.

  • Is there an easy way to eliminate duplicate tracks from iTunes on a mac?

All of a sudden I have over 6,500 duplicate tracks in my iTunes.  Not entire albums but many tracks from an album are duplicated.  Is there an easy way to get rid of these tracks or do I have to do this one by one?  Also why would this be happening? I have "Keep iTunes Media Organized" checked as well as "Copy files to iTunes when adding to library".

It is hard to say why.  iTunes is unlikely to do this all its own and there is probably something you did like add a folder that is not part of the current media collection thinking it needed adding, but it had already been added in the past.
There is no simple, universal panacea for duplicates.  You can try some of the suggestions below.
How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2905
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/itinfo/dupin.php (commercial)
Posts by turingtest2 about different types of duplicates and techniques- https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3555601 and https://discussions.apple.com/message/16042406 (Note: The DeDuper script is for Windows)
Frankly, I would do it manually.  As you can see from turingtest2's post, some duplicates are not really duplicates and I would rather do it manually than discover that a script had removed my only copy of a file (yes, I have backups but I may not notice for a year or so a file is no longer there, by which time I would have overwritten the backup because I do not have drive space for storing a year's worth of weeky iTunes backups tens of GB in size).
I would also review how you add media to iTunes.  It should not be producing all that many duplicates.

  • How to remove duplicate tracks on my Library?

How do I quickly delete duplicate tracks in itune library?
I have many duplicate tracks because I uploaded 5 cds twice.
I upload cds to my itune library.
I then made changes to the song names and added coverflow.
So how do I back up these albums to my hard drive or external drive so if I loose it or want to upload these albums to another computer?
    thank you for your help...

Just go to view > show duplicates and delete accordingly. As for backing stuff up, read this:
