Duplicate tunes in library

I have seen this in past posts, but i have not found a solution.
I have duplicate tunes in the library, these files are not duplicated, so wy do they apear twice in the list?
edit>show duplicate, actually duplicates whats in he list already (times 4).
Software reccomended looks at the fle structure, which is fine. it is a itunes issue.
running v6 on win xp.

To clarify the 'duplicate' issue a bit, one needs to understand the difference between duplicate song
i references
within iTunes and duplicate song
i files
on the PC.
You can sometimes wind up with two (or more) song references in iTunes that point to the same physical file on the PC. In this case, you need to keep only one of the references within iTunes. If you happen to delete the underlying PC song file, then the remaining reference will show the dreaded '!' of a broken link. Recovering the miss-deleted song can be easy if you haven't emptied the Recycle Bin, or difficult if you have. Also note that when mass deleting files, if the amount is too big for the Bin, the PC will bypass it and permanently delete the files.
Other times, you have two identical (or close) references within iTunes that each point to a unique song file on the PC. In this case, you need to delete both the reference in iTunes and allow iTunes to send the underlying file to the Recycle Bin. If you only delete the reference, you end up with an 'orphan' song file on the PC taking up space. Some less than musically hygienic folks have ended up with GBs of unwanted songs mingled throughout their iTunes folders. There is a novel method to find and remove them....
The take-away from the above is: Make sure you know which type of duplicate issue you have. Check each and every grouping before you delete the reference &/or the file. You can look at the underlying file of each reference through iTunes by using the 'Get Info' and note the path and file it accesses.
Also note that some song references can appear to be duplicates but are really two different song files, as in the case of the same song in AAC format and Lossless format. Unless you have the 'Kind' column showing, or notice the 'size' or 'bit rate' of the files, you may mistake them for true duplicates.
It seems to never be a clear-cut answer when dealing with iTunes....

As stated above you can still add your artwork manually:

iTunes: How to Add Artwork to Songs
If you have an iPod make sure it is enabled to show the artwork.
A tip for finding suitable artwork is to go to Amazon, locate the album, save the picture to your desktop and drag it to the iTunes artwork pane. Another way would be to locate artwork using Google image search and put the artist or album name and save the picture you find there in the same way. There are also some programs like this one: iTunes Art Importer or MP3 Tag

  • Is there a way to delete all duplicates, other than one by one?  some free program or does itunes have one to just identify and delete all duplicates in the library?

How do I delete duplicates in my library as a group, rather than one by one?

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • HT1451 i have and can find all duplicates in my library - after i find them is there a way to delete the other than one at a time

i have and can find all duplicates in my library - after i find them is there a way to delete them (in mass) other than deleting one at a time?

The only way they would all come over is if your wife had automatic downloads turned on in her store settings on the phone before she downloaded the apps. A popup for this option also comes up when you first sign into an apple id on the phone in the app store. If she didn't have that setting turned on, she'll have to download them one by one.
She could also try to sync them over from a computer that has itunes on it

Final Cut is a separate, higher end video editor.  The pro version of iMovie.
Give iPhoto a look at for creating the slideshow.  It's easy to assemble the photos in an album in iPhoto, put them in the order you want and then make a slideshow of them.  You can select from various themes and transitions between slides and add music from your iTunes library.
When you have the slidshow as you want use the Export button at the bottom of the iPhoto window and export with Size = Medium or Large.
Save the resulting Quicktime movie file in your Movies folder.
Next, open iDVD, choose your theme and drag the QT movie file into the menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Then follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
The reason I suggest iPhoto is that I find it much easier to use than iMovie (except for the older iMovie 6 HD version).  Personal preferences showing here.

  • When I open my itunes it freezes and asks me to downlaod the newest version. I always check the "dont ask me again" box and it always ASKS ME AGAIN. I dont need any more duplicates in my library so how do I stop this feature from popping up?

Im tired of this feature popping up everytime I open itunes. I alwasy check the box that say dont ask again, and it cointinually pops up. I dont want to download new version of itunes so how do I stop this?

Thanks for the reply! Ill try to change the preferences as you mentioned. However, everytime Ive ugraded my itunes it adds duplicates to my library, which I then have to delete (if I have time to waste). With 10,000 songs this gets very annoying as Im sure you can imagine. Im also know that there are even software programs to delete duplicates from itunes libraries as seen here: http://www.tucows.com/preview/507304
I do thank you for your answer and apprciate the help.
    Cheers~

  • After cleaning up "duplicates" in my Library, when I sync any device thereafter some Playlists are missing those songs?

Missing songs from playlists after sync

How did you clean up the duplicates? A playlist is an ordered list of references to tracks in iTunes. If you had duplicates in the library you may have added one version of a track to one playlist and the duplicate to a different list. When you remove the duplicate only the first list contains a reference to the song.
I have a script which would have eliminated duplicates while preserving playlist membership, and merging ratings, play & skip counts etc. More here: Re: When I delete duplicates how do I know which version is the original song and which is the duplicate? If restoring the playlists is important you may be able to restore a previous version of your main iTunes library, itl file that still has the uncorrupted playlists using the techniques in Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash and then run my script to dedupe. If you've updated iTunes regularly however, and don't have some other backup of the .itl, your most recent file is likely to be from last October.

How do I delete exact duplicates from my library?

    @Blouwagie:
You should always make a bootable backup BEFORE you do major updates.
If things go wrong you can always revert to what you had previously.
You can do this with Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. (I use CCC for a long time, and I'm very satisfied about it, I can recommend it)
It used to be donation ware, but now you need to pay a small fee. Not a big price for always knowing you're safely backed up.
If you don't have a bootable clone from before the update, and would like to revert to 10.7, check this:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4560565
    seems to work.
didn't need it myself since I waited to update, I always check this forums first to find out what are the issues/bugs.  When there seems to be none or little problems, I update. I've learned my lesson long time ago. Patience is a good thing...
So, always backup. More important than your changing underwear daily. Time machine isn't enough. Make two bootable clones. One at your place and one at a different location (theft, fire, ...), you can always revert from there.

  • Lots of Duplicates in Itunes library

I recently bought a Seagate external drive to back up my music, among other things, to using SyncToy. When finished I went to look at the results and found that SyncToy had not backed up all my music and those backed up had a lot of duplicates. Not so concerned about SyncToy here but if anyone knows why it didn't back up everything I would appreciate the help.
The problem is the duplicates in the library.. Some CDs had none. Some had incomplete song titles with a correct title included. Some had duplicates of every title with a (2) at the end. Some were duplicated with no indication of any differences. I did check the file size often enough (by hovering over the title) to generalize they were the same size. Sometimes there are 3 files, two duplicates and one with a (2) at the end.
My library is "organized" in the Music under Itunes Media, I use Itunes 10.7 and do NOT want to "upgrade" to Itunes 11.
Any ideas where they came from? And if I can somehow get rid of them, will they come back? I recently subscribed to Itunes Match to rid my old purchases of copy protection, it worked but those matched songs have no more or less duplicates than those ripped from CDs. I have been using Itunes since about 2003, so the libraries have gone through many upgrades.
    Thanks for the help!

I try to open i tunes but a mistake messages keeps apearing, " i tunes new library .

Does the original library file still exist on the computer?  Hopefully when creating the new library it was done in a seperate folder as I do not believe iTunes allows for two library files in the same location.

Photos does not have a duplicate finder tool built in. You would need a third-party application to track them down, if you do not want to do that manually.
