Duplicate user folders after reinstalling

So I reinstalled mac osx because I threw away some files that werent supposed to be thrown away.
Anyway, reinstalled, all my files are oke BUT
The user folder that's now being used it called Thomas 1, and Thomas (where all my files are) is now above it, and not being used as desktop for example.
I've been draggin over some files but my apllication support etc cant be moved.
Question, can i set my old folder as the main one to be used somewhere and delete the new one? I wont need that one anyway, there's nothing in it except for the apllication support
Thanks for the help, and i hope i made myself clear, if not i'll make some screenshots or something, thanks

There are some things you need to understand about user accounts that should help resolve this:
1. Each user account has a "home" folder in the root level Users folder. Only the account you are logged into will show the house icon. For example, if you are logged in as Thomas 1, the Thomas account will show a plain folder icon & the Thomas 1 one will show the house. Conversely, if you are logged in as Thomas, the Thomas 1 account will show a plain folder icon & the Thomas one will show the house.
2. Each user account has a unique account name, also called a *short name*, as well as a unique *full name*. The account's home folder uses the short name, & this should not normally be changed once that folder is created -- doing so may make the account unavailable. The full name can be changed at any time in the Accounts System Preference without doing any harm. In this sense, the short name is the primary one; the full name is more for convenience & personalization. Your user account's full name is "Thomas de Rijk." It appears to be associated with the short name "Thomas 1" & the home folder of the same name.
3. Each user has limited access to the home folders of other users. For example, Thomas 1 won't normally be able to open the Music, Movies, Documents, Library etc. folders in the home folder of Thomas. (Remember, the account name you are logged into is who you are from the computer's perspective, so Thomas 1 is an entirely separate entity from Thomas.)
4. Normally, one would expect to see in the Accounts System Preference one account name for each home folder in the Users folder. But you cannot simply add a home folder with a different name to Users & expect the OS to automatically recognize it as a legitimate user account (which sounds like what you have done). As the Advanced sheet of the Accounts preference shows, there are several parameters (user & group ID, UUID, etc.) that the OS must explicitly create before a user account is recognized as valid.
5. Normally, all this is taken care of automatically when you create a new user account in the Accounts preference or use Migration Assistant to copy an account from another Mac or Time Machine backup. (This is what you should have done.)
6. If you are sure there is nothing of importance to you in /Users/Thomas 1 (what you refer to as the new one), you can delete it. BUT, you can't do that if it is the only account recognized in the Accounts preference -- the OS will not allow you to delete the only account it recognizes as valid.
There are several ways out of this dilemma. None is without some risk, so it is important that you have a good backup of everything important to you before you proceed. If that is understood, I suggest you try the following:
• Open the Accounts System Preference while logged in as Thomas 1. Unlock the lock so you can make changes. (Note: Thomas 1 must be an admin account. If it is not STOP here & report back.)
• Click the plus button near the bottom of the preference window to create a new account.
• Enter whatever you want for the *full name*, keeping in mind it cannot be "Thomas de Rijk" since that is in use.
• Enter "Thomas" (or "thomas") for the *short name*. Hopefully, you will see a message that a home folder already exists for this short name & a query asking if you want to use it. If so, this is what we want, so say yes. Important: If you do not see this, cancel the operation & report back.
• If the new account is created, make sure you give it admin privileges by checking the "Allow user to administer this computer" box. Quit System Preferences, log out of Thomas 1 & into the 'new' Thomas account. Check that everything you want & expect is available & works right.
• If it does, you can now (as Thomas) open the Accounts System Preference, authenticate as admin user Thomas, & delete the Thomas 1 account. You may also now change the Thomas account's full name back to "Thomas de Rijk" since that is no longer in use for the now deleted Thomas 1 account.
I believe this is the simplest way to get what you want. Don't be concerned about the Thomas 1 library folder -- every account must have one, but there is nothing useful in it if you aren't using that account.
If any of this is unclear, feel free to ask about it.

  • 2 user folders after time machine backup. Macbook Pro 13", Mac OS X 10.6.8

After a time machine backup my macbook pro runs fine, however the backup has created a 2nd user file. my new user file is now named like my old one, just with " 1" added. I have 2 user folders, can I delete the old one?
After a random check of the content in both user folders I found out that it's not identical. Some files that weren't backed up with the time machine before the re-setup are in the original folder, while the new uder folder obviously only backup what it could find on the time machine disc. (Time machine backed up my whole hdd about 2 days before the crash & re-setup)
Due to this situation my local HDD is almost full now. The original user folder has 205 GB, the new one user 1 has 210 GB, plus applications with a 500GB HDD, I now have only 44GB left.
Can I delete the old user folder?
Can I then re-name the new one (user 1) back to "user"?
    Thanks
    J.

I've never heard of a 'problem' as you're having - and I searched Pondoni's Time Machine Troubleshooting FAQs and couldn't fine anythig similar.
I would be wary of deleting anything manually from your TM backup - the sparsebundles are rather sensitive. If you like, however, you could always erase your TM backups and start anew... that's the only way I would know to 'fix' the problem.
    Good luck,

  • I lost my user folders after the latest Mac Os upgrade

I noticed the change first trying to use Nikon View NX2 to work on my desktop images.  They were no longer accessible.  Looking at the folder list both in View NX2 and in the Mac Finder, I could no longer find my user profiles which allow access to all of my pictures as well as my desktop--all my individual folders.  This happened right after the latest Mavericks upgrade.

It turned out to be a bug in the release of iTunes 11.2. iTunes 11.2.1 supposedly fixed it.

    Hi Nathan:
It never happened to me but I feel that the login data is still lurking somewhere.
Have you already tried "Log out user"... and log-in again? But if you are afraid to touch anythinmg, then here is a link to Applejack that may correct the situation:

  • After refomatting HDD, reinstalling Vista plus service packs, recovering files from Microsoft backup and installing new copy of Firefox 3.6, Firefox will not run. Have deleted all old M0zilla profile folders and reinstalled Firefox again to no avail.

After computer would not boot and could not be repaired, I reformatted the HDD, reinstalled Vista plus all service packs and updates, recovered files from Microsoft backup and installed new copy of Firefox 3.6. Firefox will not run.
I have deleted all old M0zilla profile folders and reinstalled Firefox again to no avail.
After intallation was completed, the automatic startup just placed a small box on the screen "Import wiz". This just sat there with no activity. After I closed this box, none of the Firefox start buttons would open the program -- just the blue rotating icon for about 2 seconds then nothing.

After reinstalling Yosemite 10.10.2 Bridge opens folders very slowly.

Thanks Ian! I see the other topics now, and I did the deauthorize thing, although it said this computer was not authorized (I know it was because I just bought songs on it.) So I authorized it again and now it works fine! Except now it says there are 3 computers authorized, I only have 2. I guess it thinks this computer is authorized twice now somehow? I hope this bug gets fixed.

  • Multiple users in a class room enviroment / deleting home folders after use

    Hi,
I'm administrating a class room environment, where my students log on using Active Directory accounts. I would like to clean up the home folders after the users log out, so their profiles would be reseted when they log in next time. Is there any way to achieve this?
    any advice is appreciated
    thanks,
    M

    The usual way is :-
    Create an account say "default".
Login with "default" and set up that account exactly how you want all the users to get. For example dock settings and browser home page etc.
Tidy up the account, empty the trash, delete recent servers, clear browser caches etc.
    Login as root
Delete the keychain of the "default" account.
Copy all the home folders of default to /System/Library/User Template/English.lproj
    Run repair permissions
Now all new users will get these home folders and settings when they logon.
Now all you have to do is use a script that deletes the home folders of a students when they logout
so they then get the default set when they login again.
Here is an example of one :-
    #!/bin/sh
    rm -r /Users/$1
N.B. OS X uses the variable $1 for the currently logged in user.
The easiest way to get this running when they logout out, is to use Mike Bombich's loginwindow manager. It complains a bit when you open it to set it up, but it still does the job with login and logout scripts.

  • IPhoto Library won't load after reinstalling Mac OSX

I have reinstalled mac i was having some problems and i am a newbie in mac so i tought a clean install would be good at that point
After reinstalling i had my user folder backed up i moved the files back to their original place, and organized everything because it was messy, and then started a timemachine backup on an external drive
    so in short:
    i reinstalled mac
restored my iPhoto Library to the Pictures folder
Updated everything to the latest version ( since the photo library was created with the latest version )
when i tried to open iphoto it stayed reloading for an hour then i gave up and searched online
my pictures are all there i can copy them and start a new library but that is not what i want
i want my events as i sorted them i want my faces as i sorted them i spent a lot of time making these pictures as they were
    please help
    Things i already tried:
    vacuuming the *.db sqlite files
removing the faces.db so that if the faces are the problem i would know
    tried removing all *.db files
tried to import my photos to a new library but that is not what i want
right now i have 2 libraries, a new one wih ****** event names
and the old one that is corrupt

Using your original library try the following:  make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Mountain Lion hangs during boot sequence after reinstall

I am running Mountain Lion on a late-2012 Mac Mini (the newest one at this writing), and my system got messed up after I tried to reset my primary uid to 501 (I know, first mistake) after having migrated the system from an older Mac Mini.  This worked partially, but I continued to have issues accessing some files and got tired of resetting the permissions manually.
I tried reinstalling Mountain Lion and since then, the system fails to boot completely.  I can get as far as seeing the desktop, Finder menu, Dock, etc., but then one or more error windows pop up relating to specific resources (I think Calendar Agent was one of them, I can't remember because I then saw the spinning disk icon and the system stopped responding).  I tried restarting by turning the computer off and then on again, but continue to get similar errors after it gets almost all the way through booting.
Although I have much of my data on the hard drive backed up to an external Seagate drive on my home network, I had not been able to do a complete backup because I have many old (pre-OS X) files that contain slashes or other characters no longer allowed in filenames, and it has proven too cumbersome to update all the filenames to make it worthwhile.  Thus, I am not able to wipe the hard drive and start from scratch.
I know how to boot in Single-User mode, which does work, but don't know enough BSD/Darwin to pinpoint the source of this problem and fix it.
Any advice about how to diagnose and/or solve this problem?  I would like to be able to correct any uid and gid conflicts that may be causing this, which I believe would work, but am not sure how to do this.  I am writing this from Safari after booting in Recovery mode.
Thanks for any help with this.  - Klingon725

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
The first step should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Lost Mail after Reinstall of OS

I had to reinstall my OS 10.4.8 because of some issues with FileVault. Before archiving the system I backed everything up to an external storage device.
After reinstalling and reimporting all my files I realize one of the most important things that I'm missing is my Mail program's database of nearly 20k emails.
I went into my previous user's libarary>mail and imported that, but that only imported the mail folders I had created and not nearly all 20k emails.
Any idea where these emails reside and how to get them back? Is this a possiblity?

  • Installing printers after reinstall of OS

Second problem after reinstall of OS X on a misbehaving drive (drive was wiped clean, then a clean install done).
    We can't install printers.
We know where the printer drivers are located that we want to use. However, we don't know where OS X wants these drivers to be to find them using Printer Setup Utility. Do we have to start from scratch and use the Epson or Xerox driver installers? If we search for a printer that Setup Utility DOES find, our finder does not see them in ANY folder on our system. They are SOMEWHERE...are they HIDDEN? AAAAGGGGGHHHHH. We don't really have time for this. We so seldom delve into the guts of the OS that it's not second nature, like OS 9 was for us.
On another G4, they are located in Home>users>"username">Library>Printers.
On yet another, they are in
    Home>users>"username">Library>Printers>PPDs>Contents>Resources>en.lproj

It sounds like you have a shop with more than one mac.
The first thing that I would do is get Printer Setup Repair from Fixamac. It has saved my bacon more than one time. It also has the ability to properly install ppd's. Just use PSR to find the ppd and press the install button. PSR can be downloaded here and is shareware. You can use it without paying for it but the longer you have it the longer it takes before you get to use it. I bought my copy after it fixed printer services a couple of times when nothing else would.
    http://fixamac.net/software/downloads/index.html
Want to learn more??, If you installed the Developer Package, then you have the best resource for ppd's on X. Just search for ppd on your boot volume.
In the event that none of your macs have the Developer Tools installed here is a quote from the files (there is also a ton of other great info in these files)
How Mac OS X Searches for and Chooses PPD Files
Mac OS X searches for a PostScript printer's PPD file when a user creates a print queue. Mac OS X automatically searches for PPD files in the appropriate localized folder. First, it looks in the en.lproj folder in following locations, in this order:
    • /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/
    • /System/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/
If it finds a PPD file for the printer in the en.lproj folder, it then looks for the localized PPD file in the language folder for the currently active language. See "Installing PPD Files" for information on localized folders.
Note: The active language is the preferred language of the user who created the print queue. If the preferred language is changed, the language of the print queue does not change unless the queue is deleted and then created again.
If Mac OS X doesn't find a PPD file for a PostScript printer in either location, it looks in the Classic System Folder, provided the Classic environment has been run once or the Classic System Folder has been selected at least once in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences. In other words, Mac OS X must know of the existence of the Classic System Folder.

  • Unable to log in to user account after installing windows 7 using Bootcamp

    Hi everyone,
I need help. I have been at it for days, I have googled every which way but I am not able to fix this. Basically my problem is that I am unable to log in to my user account after I used Bootcamp to install windows 7. I will explain what I did up until I couldn't log in.
I backed up my user account using Time Machine(I was logged in as the user). The account had FileVault activated and I neglected to disable FileVault before back up. I just didn't think to, it did not even occur to me! Then I partitioned Macintosh HD, I was doing this with my step son and he thought we were supposed to partition the hard drive first before running Bootcamp! After that was done, I couldn't run Bootcamp because obviously we had whipped the HD clean! Anyway, I reinstalled the OS X using the internet, after which I run Bootcamp and successfully installed windows 7. Then I went on to restore my account using Time Machine, only when I try to log in I get the error message "you are unable to log in to the user account at this time". I tried every possible solution I could find on here, including creating a new admin account, deleting the old account but saving the user folder and then routing the new account to the old user folder. Still nothing. I have tried logging in as a root user, reset the master password and deleted FileVault files from Library/keychain in the hope I would access the user account, but to no avail. What's more is that I can't even see the sparse bundle or sparse image files that people keep referring too. I can't even find it on the Time Machine back up! I then thought I would cut my losses and try system recovery using Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery (cost me £81) but it did not recover any of my photos, music, videos or documents.
I honestly can't come to terms with the fact that I am unable to login to an account with 3 years worth of pictures and documents. I am having a hard time letting go. Is there anyway possible to crack this?
    Thank you in advance.
By the way, I am running Mountain Lion OX 10.8.4 on MacBook mid 2010

I have this exact problem. Installed Bootcamp on a networked iMac running Mountain lion and and can no longer log in to my Mac user account. Would love if any of the pro users on here can shed a bit of light.

All the issues you guys are talking about have been reported in beta stage of these new drivers. I would say none of them has been fixed yet. The only solution for now is to use previous drivers which work fine or use some modified drivers which fixes some issues, but not all. Your choice.

Problem exists on my HP C0mpaq 6720s , Vista operating system.
System restore, restored to version 3.6.3 instead of 3.6.10 . This did not start either. Previously, I used Revo Uninstaller Pro to remove all Mozilla items, checked regedit and removed all Mozilla folders, then reinstalled 3.6.11 from your website. Mozilla would not start and XUL error stated 1.9.2.10 followed by min 1.9.2.11 and max 1.9.2.11 . This was the same error report that appeared after the automatic update.
So I am at a loss and without Mozilla .

I have successfully resolved this issue on my PC by allowing updater.exe through the firewall. This updater.exe is located in the folder where your Mozilla Firefox was installed. The default folder is "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\updater.exe"
