Duplicate version looks different than original -- same adjustments

This morning I imported a few photos (D70 RAW), found they looked good with the default processing (no adjustments applied other than the default RAW 1.1 processing), and created duplicate versions to crop to different sizes. The duplicate versions look different -- the dark areas of the photos are lighter and noisier (sorry, still learning proper photo terminology). The duplicate versions have the identical adjustments (none). I tried toggling the cropping on/off, and the duplicate versions still look different.
This is very odd... has anybody else experienced this?
iMac 24" 2.16GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2.0 GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT 256 MB Nikon D70

I did a little more investigation on this issue, and found that when I make the duplicate version, the image still looks identical. It is when I crop the image that things get messed up -- even if I then remove the crop adjustment.

• The way Aperture renders my Nikon RAW (NEF) files look different than...

The was Aperture renders my NEF files looks different than NX...
Ok so I use all the in camera setting/tools to the best of abilities to try and cut my editing down as much as possible but when shooting RAW I end up having to tweak every images to get them back to what they really look like... I shoot often RAW and JPG combined and when I open a NEF in NX and a JPG in PS they are identical and need very little work, when I use Aperture the NEF files are very different looking from the JPG (or NEF in NX) and every single one needs tweaking (I get more redish/pinkish skin, often a hint of green cast to (slightly off WB/tone thing) and more contrast.
Below is screenshot showing the difference between a JPG (or NEF in NX) and a RAW file in Aperture

This is just a silly snap shot in very flat overcast light, and has the least amount of shift or difference of any image type so far, when I use strobes, shoot for a more contrasty image, gel for color and manual WB the differences are huge almost to the point that you would think you where looking at two completely different images and not the same NEF opened in different software.
How do I go about getting Aperture to render my NEF's more like what I shot like NEF in NX, JPG in anything, and even the back of the camera screen?

Thank you, that seems like will work, just having the boost turned down a bit on import has helped tremendously but I cant stop feeling like I am moving towards the "Fix it in post" mentality
I will need to get better at tweaking my images... No matter how I try I cant kill the pinking skin or the very faint green glow in blond hair or bright neutral tones without affecting other areas of the image.. I am sure I will figure it out but anyone having any tips or links that could speed up my process I would appreciate it.
The green is weird its like someone snuck a small florescent light into all my shoots without telling me, not major but enough to be annoying.
I shoot a ton of motor sports (3000 images a weekend) and shoot JPG and have gotten good at using in camera pre sets, knowing what I got and getting it right in the camera, I wish Nikon would give up the code or whatever is needed for all the info to be carried over to Aperture..... I would pay the $100 or whatever to use the NX engine in Aperture

• Colors in FCP looks different than when playing in QT7

The colors of the video's in FCP looks different than when playing back in QuickTime. I wonder if it can be a color management setting in FCP? I have the same problem when playing a clip in AE. I have two FCP machines, but only one of them is having this problem. Any ideas of what I can do to get the right colors back?

Have you enabled Final Cut Studio Color Compatibility in the QT Player preferences?

Do you capture in RAW or JPEG? What software do you use to view your image? Is your monitor calibrated? What is the brightness level on your camera LCD? All of these information can affect your image. And keep in mind that image on the back of the camera is often brighter and more saturated.

• If I open Muse from my dock (grey/silver look), it looks different than if I double click on an existing muse site (opens with a black background and different layout)... are they still the same versions?

The one on your dock is an old version. The darker version of Muse is the newer version. Replace your icon on your dock with the newer one.

• Font in Illustrator prints different than the same font in a different document

I created two pdfs in Illustrator and on the monitor they look the same because they are the same font, character size, both with the same black fill with no stroke but when they are printed it looks different. One version looks grey while the other looks normal. I have double checked settings, cut and pasted the text into the document that prints correctly and nothing seems to fix this error.It's the second file that doesn't print properly aka BuyzFrontv2 copy.
Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance.

One of the problems is that much of the text is in 4-color black, probably as a result of cutting pasting from Word. There is less of it in the second one than the first. You might want to clear this up and then retry.

• IMovie video result different than original.

I purchased the app iMovie as I had 2 videos that I took with my iPad4, iOS7.0.4 and I wanted to combine them into 1 video. After I did this the resulting video looked as if I had taken it from a greater distance than the original videos in my camera roll. I took my videos with my iPad of my computer monitor screen. The resulting video after combining them showed the whole monitor with space around it. I just wanted the resulting video to have the same look as my original videos in my camera roll viewer. Any suggestions on how I can acheive this?  Thank you.....

I can only guess you have some kind of color-management problem on your system, as I just did a test and didn't see any differences between the preview display in the Merge to HDR Pro dialog and the final result.
What color profile are you using for your input images?
Is it the same as your default working profile?
I shouldn't think it would matter what profiles you're using - Photoshop should handle them all properly - but clearly something's causing your saturation to be massively different, which is the kind of thing you might see if a narrow gamut image is being interpreted as though it has a wide gamut color profile (or displayed without color management on a wide gamut monitor).  I do know that HDR processing converts images to your default working profile under some conditions.
Another possibility is that the display of the image in the HDR Pro dialog is misinterpreting (or neglecting to use) the image color profile.
That's a very pretty sunset shot, by the way.

• 'Play Full Screen' looks different than 'play'  (makes timing errors)

In iMovie, 'Play Full Screen' behaves differently than 'Play'  Makes timing errors, cuts off the beginning of commentaries, etc.

You can't disable tap/zoom scaling. What happens if you add a margin and disable thumbnail?
Can you convert them to a Keynote presentation (Hype?)?
One option would be to reduce the original video dimensions and add a frame/mask around it before adding into a book, that way when it is expanded, it sits at a smaller size. Bunch of work, maybe, so unless you have higher rez video, that may be your best option.

• 920 cartridge looks different than the old one

I just bought some new ink cartridges for my Officejet 6500a 710n-z printer.  I bought the same 920 XL cartridges that I have bought and successfully installed before.  However, the most recent ones would not install!
These new cartridges are different than the others -- on the bottom, they only have the gold-colored contact plate.  The others had the gold plate and a little bubble-like item that I think was called an ink window.  Other than that, the cartridges are exactly the same.
Have these cartridges changes?   What do I need to do to make them work in my printer?
This question was solved.

Hello BezaNH,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
Sorry to hear about the issues with the Officejet 6500 not reading the new generation cartridges. I believe I found a document that may help you resolve this.
Some steps you will have done such as, remove and install cartridges, I would still suggest following through with all the steps. The images of the cartridges are that of the older generations cartridges, the steps are the same regardless.
'The following ink cartridge appears to be missing or damaged' Error Message Displays on the Printer....
Let me know how those steps work out, I will be keeping an eye on the thread.

• Embed via systemFont looks different than via source

Hello all!
I'm trying to deal with an odd issue related to embeding fonts... here it is...
I am embeding some fonts into an swf that is loaded by my main swf.
I am embeding them like so:
[Embed(systemFont="Calibri", fontName = "CalibriEmbed", mimeType = "application/x-font", fontWeight = "normal", fontStyle = "normal",
        unicodeRange = "<UNICODE RANGES HERE>",
        advancedAntiAliasing = "true")]
var Calibri:Class;
Now when I assign the embeded font to a textfield (via actionscript) like:
var modifiedFormat:TextFormat;
modifiedFormat.font = "CalibriEmbed";
txtField.setTextFormat(modifiedFormat, 0, txtField.text.length);
The text that is displayed seems to have a different line height than the same text field which has Calibri assigned to it via the properties panel in Flash.  I can somewhat compensate for this by adding some leading to the TextFormat, but that isn't ideal.
The odd thing is if I embed the font by using source instead of systemFont it works just fine... ie:
[Embed(source="<PATH>\CALIBRI.TTF", fontName = "CalibriEmbed", mimeType =  "application/x-font", fontWeight = "normal", fontStyle = "normal",
         unicodeRange = "<UNICODE RANGES HERE>",
         advancedAntiAliasing = "true")]
var Calibri:Class;
Any ideas why it is doing this?
Thanks!

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

• Just bought MSI R5770 and card looks different than expected

I bought this as an open Box from Fry's today.
When I opened it up, the card looks completely different than the pictures I've seen online.
The label on the back says it is a R5770 PMD1G and the serial number on the label matches the one on the box.  But the fan/heatsink combination is completely different.  The board layout (capacitors, etc) seems to be different as well
I'm especially concerned by the small size of the fan compared to what I was expecting.
Before I install it, I wanted to make sure I actually have the correct card that I paid for.  Here is a link to a pic.

She slapped a new reduced price sticker on it and assured me that they'd test it to make sure it worked.  I'm willing to bet that if I go back there in a few days, that it will be back on the shelves and still have the wrong card in the box.
I wouldn't expect anything less from them.  It was probably back on the shelf 15 minutes after you walked out.  If its worth anything, I don't buy anything open box.  The small savings isn't worth the hassle.

• Lightroom Image Looks Different than in Windows Viewer/CS5/etc.

I've seen this discussed elsewhere, but I believe the nature of my issue may be a bit different, so please excuse the repeat inquiry.
I'm currently using Lightroom 3 on a 17' Samsung Syncmaster 920NW on two different desktops. The hardware configuration for each machine is also identical, with only a few minor exceptions. However, the images on one machine display drastically differently in Lightroom, as opposed to any other Windows application. I've updated the video drivers for both computers, reinstalled the monitor drivers for both, and have uninstalled/reinstalled Lightroom on both with no success in remedying the discrepancy.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated in finding a solution to this issue. It's very frustrating to be anchored down to one desktop due to the inconsistencies of the other.
Thanks!

You need to calibrate both monitors to identical settings, the luminance value being very important, using an appropriate calibration tool and software.
Spyder Elite software has a specific settings too enable you to match monitors across machines in a studio setting, or from a desk top to a laptop. Without calibration images in viewed in colour managed applications will always look different. If you do not wish to colour manage you can always set a colour space such as sRGB as a monitor profile on all the machines, the only difference you will see then will be down to the luminance value of the monitor. However this will mean images viewed on other peoples screens may differ markedly from your own. The real solution to colour problems is to use colour management and this means calibration of your monitor as a basic requirement.

• How come that the design mode looks different than preview mode with slideshows?

hello,
I am placing a slideshow on the site. when I look in the preview mode the slideshow is not exactly in the same place.
How come? Am I doing somthing wrong?
thanks for response

Welcome to the medium that is the web. Every browser has it's own text layout engine and "web-safe" fonts are a misnomer. You cannot rely on text line breaking the same in different browsers. Thus creating text frames that snuggly fit the text within is likely to result in what's occurring on your site in some browsers or browser versions.
As a general rule, you should attempt to use Web Fonts whenever you can. Use "Web Safe" fonts as a second choice. And only use System fonts as a last resort and only for small amounts of text (since they become an image when output).
If you want a specific portion of text to absolutely never go to two lines, you'll want to put it in a text frame that significantly wider than the text so when the line length varies the text doesn't wrap to a new line.
"Web Safe" fonts are not a single font but actually a list/stack of fonts where the browser goes through the list until it finds a font that's available on the current viewer's device. The fonts in the list/stack are similar in visual appearance and font metrics, but any difference in font metrics is sufficient to result in changes in line breaks, so when using web safe fonts you need to account for much larger variations in line length and line breaking than will occur when using a Web Font.

• Bridge CC - Content Panel looks different than Preview

Problem - Images in the Content panel look dull and desaturated. The view of the same image in the Preview Panel, as well as Photoshop CC, looks fine (ie, like I expect from working with these images in CS6). This applies to NEF, JPEG and PSD files. In the attached screenshot, note the distinct lack of red in the skin tones in the Content Panel compared to Preview. Blues look a little dull as well. This is a PSD file. This image is tagged sRGB, verified in the Metadata panel as well as in Photoshop CC.
I have read similar threads here (where all of Bridge was dull and desaturated), but I don't see anything that mentions the two panels in Bridge displaying images differently.
Background - 10 years as a pro photographer, and I know what I'm doing around a Mac and color management. I finally "upgraded" from CS6 to CC when I got my new Mac.
System -
Retina iMac w/Yosemite. Second monitor - HP LP2475w (Bridge sits on the HP monitor)
Both monitors have profiles generated with an i1 Display and the i1 Profiler application.
Both monitors are using their correct profiles
Steps Already taken (condensed)
1. Purge cache (multiple times throughout the process).
2. Check color cache and cache permissions.
3. Reinstall Bridge at the behest of Adobe support, even though this was a new install.
4. Check that "Always high quality" thumbnails is checked in Bridge (this seems to have no effect either way).
5. Check color settings - NA GP2 in Bridge. Interestingly, the same behavior is exhibited no matter what I select here.
6. Drag Bridge to the iMac display - everything now looks good. Drag back - now BOTH Content and Preview are desaturated. Will stay like this until Bridge is restarted.
7. Recalibrate the HP (Bridge) monitor. No change in behavior.
8. Verify no sidecar xmp for this image, to rule out ACR in the problem.
9. Open Output module to verify that the content panel looks the same way there (it does).
10. Investigate ~user/Library/Caches/Adobe/Bridge CC/Cache/ folders. Wow, the preview for this particular image in /1024/xxxx LOOKS CORRECT (like it does in the Preview panel). So Bridge IS generating high quality previews correctly.
Thoughts -
1. This seems unlikely to be a monitor profile issue. Bridge itself is displaying the same PSD two different ways. A bad profile would make everything on that monitor look wrong, wouldn't it?
2. Some of my images sit on an external drive, but the screenshot here is from the internal mac drive, to try and rule that out.
3. It's not some strange issue with the HP monitor not displaying color evenly across it's surface - if it were, than the screenshot would not show the difference between the panels. I also moved the Bridge window around the display to further verify that color is the same across the whole panel.
4. Maybe Bridge ignores the profile for the content panel - but in the case of no profile, it assumes sRGB (or does it?) which is exactly what this image is. I have tried this with Adobe RGB images and the same behavior is exhibited.
5. Previews are being generated correctly, but do not seem to be what is read off disc to display in the Content Panel.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. My gut feeling is that for some reason, Bridge is not showing me the saved high quality preview in the Content panel. But why?

Is your file tagged?  I.e. does it have the proper color profile embedded?
Is your monitor accurately calibrated and profiled?
What are your preferences in Bridge re previews and profiles?

• Photos in Library module and after export look different than in Development module

Hello,
I experience a problem.
After I update photos in the Development module, the updates seem not to be shown in the Library module. And when I subsequently export to Flickr, Flickr is also showing the original photo, not the adapted one.
I noticed this the first time after making Blacks a bit deeper, causing a sunflower to become a deeper yellow. I thought that my adaptations were not applied in the Library module. After I checked with cranking down the Saturation all the way back (to almost black-and-white), that adaptation WAS applied in the Library view. So it had to be something else, causing the same color difference between the Library and Development modules.
When I switch from the Library module to the Development module, I see a slight delay in applying my changes, but they are applied. Before they are applied, I can see that the original photo is shown and that looks the same as in the Library module and on Flickr.
The photostrip on the bottom of the Lightroom screen also shows the original photos only, unless I go to the development module and select a photo (adaptations are applied in the photostrip after I select the photo, not before).
After I played a bit more in the Development module, I found something strange in the Camera Calibration menu of the Development module. The Adobe Profile (my default) caused an obvious color difference between the Library (less saturated) and the Development (more saturated) modules. The Camera Standard profile also showed a (very) slight difference, but I was unable to notice the differences using the other profiles.
So I was thinking (but it's only a guess), that the profiles are not applied in the Library view and on export, but they are in the Development module?
I use Lightroom 5.6, Camera RAW 8.6.
Please help me, as this is very annoying. I currently cannot export my photos to Flickr or anywhere else, unless I overcompensate before exporting. And I really don't want to do that. My Lightroom photo is my perfect photo, and I want to keep it that way...
Many thanks in advance for any help,
Peter

Hi ssprengel,
Thanks for your reply. Let me react to each possibility you mention and provide some extra information.
- "Check your Export / File Settings / Image Format and make sure they are set to JPG not Original". Done that, it's not on Original, but on jpg. This would not explain why I see the difference in the Library and Development modules, by the way. But better to know for sure.
- "...the most likely thing that is wrong is your color-management on your computer is not working properly". It is a PC with Windows 7. I have been using Lightroom for maybe 6 years and I never had this problem before. The last time I changed my setup is more than a year ago and this problem only started to happen a short while ago (after the update to Lightroom 5.6? I'm not sure, but that's the only thing that has changed lately). I use a Spider to create a custom profile that is correct for my setup and do a regular update on the profile.
- "what brand and model of monitor do you have?" I have an EIZO FlexScan S2411W and use that for a long time as well. I chose this brand of monitors for its good color reproduction and I have been happy with it for years now.
What I am not getting is why would all this show a difference between the Library and Development module? The only difference is the Lightroom software that is switching from one module to another, and that should deliver the same photo. I'm also stating in my first post that the differences are very noticeable using the Adobe Standard Camera Profile in the Development module. I have a feeling that the profile is part of the problem.
