Duplicated contacts - 174 of them.

In the lead up to the iCloud launch, I began getting duplicates of lots of random contacts on my iPhone. (Some of these contacts are recent entries I use all the time, and some long forgotten ones I haven't looked at in years). Now, some of my contacts have 7 different cards each containing up to 174 of each different entry - mobile tel no's, email addresses, landlines etc. So one contact, which itself may be duplicated 6 times, can contain over 700 different entries. I tried manually deleting over 1000 duplicated contacts on my Mac, but now the iCloud wants to sync them all back to my iPhone. There's not much room left on my iPhone for music or photos. Thank you.

Check you don't have iCloud contact syncing AND iTunes contact syncing enabled.

Duplicated contact cards without visible changes

Hi everyone,
I'm having duplicate entries in address book from time to time. This time I have 47 duplicated informations found. I can merge them and am out of dupes and out of trouble. But it comes back some time and I really liked to know what changes are done. I don't have 47 duplicated contact cards, maybe one or so. Can I see the changes somehow?

UPDATE:
I made a vimdiff between the old card set and the one after the merge. I saw several of these items that disappeared:

It seems the entries came in through the facebook sync app on iPhone. I also wondered why they are not clickable in address book on the Mac, just on the iPhone. Did they do something inappropriate? And why does address book recognise those entries as duplicates?

I don't know if this helps much, but Address Book was basically the same application in a previous version of the Mac OS. Folks still seem to use the terms interchangably though. Similarly, Calendar used to be "iCal."
I believe syncing contacts with Google or iCloud is an either/or proposition - you can't do both. When you sync with either, a copy is saved to your Mac for faster access (like a web browser's cache). I believe there's still an option to save contacts exclusively to your Mac (HD), but I don't think it's either preferred or occurs by default if you have an account such as Gmail/google or iCloud already set up.
I've never played with preferences in Contacts (Address Book), but I do have both google and iCloud accounts associated with my Mac. Under System Preferences:Mail, Contacts & Calendars, you can specify what accounts do on your Mac. If you have multiple accounts set up, a list will appear on the left side. As you select each one, a list of check boxes appear to the right for each service you want to associate with that account. For example, I have an iCloud account for mail, calendars, contacts, and Safari (among others). I have a Gmail account for mail, although it gives me the option of using this account for calendars, etc. For Gmail, the only item I have checked is mail. It's never asked me if I wanted to sync my addresses with Google.
I hope this helps... at least a little. If nothing else, I hope I've solved the "Address Book" mystery ;-)

On your iOS device tap Settings > iCloud. Turn Contacts off.
Reset the device. Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Now tap Settings > iCloud. Turn Contacts back on.

I have exactly the same problem on my ipad. It is happening on only some contacts but, as with you, when I delete one of the contacts on the ipad, the second ipad contact and the contact on the imac are also deleted. This is even the case when I have differentiated the two contacts on the ipad and can see the one I have deleted on the ipad is not the same one as is then deleted on the imac.

Yes, It is possible. You can merge contacts, calendars, and bookmarks between multiple computers.
When you sync the contacts and calendars to your iPhone from the new computer you'll see the option to Merge or Replace, just choose Merge.

Welcome to the Support Communities! It sounds like you have already tried some of the troubleshooting steps below. If your Touch ID is not able to enroll any of your fingers, it may need to be serviced.

Make sure that you're using the latest version of iOS.
Make sure that your fingers and the Home button are clean and dry.*
Cover the Home button completely. Don't tap too quickly, don't press down hard, and don't move your finger while Touch ID is scanning. Make sure that your finger touches the metal ring around the Home button.
If you're using a case or screen protector, make sure it doesn't cover the Home button or the surrounding ring. If it does, remove the case or screen protector and try again.
Tap Settings > Touch ID & Passcode and make sure that iPhone Unlock or iTunes & App Store is on. Also make sure that you've enrolled one or more fingerprints.
Try enrolling a different finger.
If you can't enroll any of your fingers, take your device to an Apple Retail Store, Apple Authorized Service Provider, or contact AppleCare for help.

TS4147 iCloud update today removed my main contacts and placed them in the icloud folder along with my other contact groups.. now they are all mixed together.

Outlook 2010. I had a main id plus several other address books. I updated the iCloud control panel today and it merged all of my address books into an iCloud address book, it removed my main contacts and mixed them all into the other address books.

Restore your backup.

Duplicated contacts - 174 of them.
