Duplicated files when importing into itunes

Hi,
My hard drive seems to have copies of songs both in the My Music folder and the iTunes folder as well. I gather it means I have two copies of everything. Is this normal for iTunes to do this and is it ok to delete the copies which aren't in the iTunes folder?

Folks, you've posted your question in the iTunes for Mac forum. You will probably get a better response in the iTunes for Windows forum.

i have a couple of wma files that are protected and will not import into itunes because of the protected content. is there any way around this?

If you are able to burn those protected files to an audio CD, then that audio CD will act like any CD that you would purchase in your local store.

  • File Name Encoding resets to Roman from Cyrillic when importing into iTunes

I have added a large number of Russian songs to my library. Many of the file names were not imported using the correct file name encoding. I downloaded the file name encoding repair app and fixed all the file names in my iTunes library, but whenever I add the songs into iTunes, the names are reset to Roman encoding from Cyrillic. Is there any way to set and lock the encoding so iTunes doesn't reset it?

Fixing the filenames probably doesn't do what you need. iTunes uses the ID3 tags. See this note for info on fixing those:

  • No video when imported into itunes yet vid when file outside

    This is really weird
i converted 2 videos i had by using quicktime video player to convert it to ipod format
if i leave these 2 videos on the desktop right click and choose play in itunes they play perfectly in the itunes window or fukk screen
Yet if i import them into itunes when they play in itunes they dont show vidoe only audio
delete from itunes and play from outside itunes again and the video is back!
they play perfectly in quicktime player
Any ideas what the heck is causing this? they are standard m4v conversions.
I tried deleting them completely and reconverting with quicktime and exact same results

ok i think i figured something out
it now does this with all my videos in itunes BUT
if i pause any video and restart it the video suddenly appears and plays
its a pain to have to play stop and then play every-time though

  • How can I stop Compulations CDs from being broken up into multiple different Albums when imported into Itunes?

I am currently using Itunes 10.6.1.7.  When I attempt to import my CDs, any that are Compulation Cds (with multiple artists), the CDs aren't being imported into the same folder and are broken into multiple listing in my Itunes library.
How can change this so that they are imported only by Album?

I think even using Get Info may not reveal the change, though it is possible the behaviour has altered since I last tested it. Playing or updating the tracks location in a script such as UpdateTagInfo seems to get iTunes to re-evaluate the tag.
Assuming WMP is involved it may be best to make the necessary settings adjustments to prevent further changes, use the script to get all of the background changes exposed within iTunes, then correct as you see fit. Alternatively I do have another script called ExportImport that could be used to back up the current state of your tags (you should temporarily rename the media folder during the export phase), after which you would then run UpdateTagInfo and then use ExplortImport in its import mode to restore the corrupted data.

  • How to stop system from freezing when importing into iTunes (version 7)?

Since I have installed iTunes 7, I have been unable to import music into iTunes; my computer freezes after about 10 seconds and the only thing I can do is restart the entire computer. It is extremely frustrating and I can't seem to find anyone who can help me with this issue...I'm affraid that I'm not extremely technical-savvy when it comes to these things, so any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I've found quite a few people in these discussions with this problem and I had the same one myself.
The only thing I could do (the startup disc I have was an earlier version of iTunes - I downloaded iTunes 7 from the net) is uninstall iTunes and then reinstall using the earlier disc and don't upgrade it. Unfortunately this means if you have any music in iTunes 7 you won't be able to use it.

  • ALAC files not importing into iTunes

I'm using the latest 12.0.1.26 iTunes on a Dell Studio XPS (with an intel i7 processor and 2 TB SSD drive), which I use to run three Apple Airports dotted around the house and am having a problem playing ALAC files which I've converted from FLAC files bought from HighResAudio.com.
They play ok with VLC but when I try to add the folder or file into iTunes nothing seems to happen, or if I select 'play with' and pick iTunes, then iTunes starts up ok but the file doesn't appear or play at all.
I've just started re-recording my cd collection in ALAC format which all play fine when recorded directly into iTunes.
The problem is with these high resolution files (Mike Oldfield's new Man On The Rocks album) which I bought to try the supposedly 'better than cd/studio' quality sound which were only available as FLAC files. I then converted these with 'free studio audio converter' and as I said, the converted files play fine on VLC.
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

I tried a different converter and also changed the playback preferences -which was down at 44.1kHz- up to 96kHz as I know the hi res files are supposed to be up at this level.
Not sure if it was one or the other of your suggestions, or both, but it has worked, so many thanks for your quick and effective help!

  • How do I "tag" video files to import into iTunes

I have created a series of .mov files of English learning words and phrases for an ESL class I teach. Many of my students have iPods. I'd like to convert these files into the .h264 format for the iPod. That's not difficult. • Considering buying aperture.  Have raw images processed in NIK NX2 software.  What happens to those files when imported into Aperture?

Understand NiK is discontinuing Capture NX2.  Therefore would like to buy Aperture as host for image management.  If I do purchase and import RAW files previously processed in NX2 into Aperture.  Is old processing retained?  Doubtful.  Or is new processing required?  Have an iMac with iPhoto 10 etc.

You can import the image files converted from RAW and edited by NX2 but they will no longer be RAW NEF files they will be non-lossy TIFF files or lossy JPEG.
Or you can import the original RAW NEF files into Aperture for Aperture to do the RAW conversion.
To my eyes/brain with the Nikon cameras I use (D2x, D100, D5100) I find that NX2 provides the most pleasing RAW conversions, but I still use Aperture for its great workflow.

  • Mp3 files wont import into itunes from external hard drive

I just switched from PC to Mac and have the new aluminium mac book. For my PC I had all my music stored on my external hard drive.I have begun transferring most of it to itunes, but some of the files since hooking my external hard drive to my Mac book have turned into 'Apple Files' which appear to be document files as opposed to music files. Is there a way that i can convert them into the itunes format?

WMA is not supported directly by iTunes. In iTunes for Windows, you can convert (but not play) these files, as long as they're not copy protected, to an iTunes-supported format.
Short of running Windows on your new Mac and handling this with iTunes for Windows, or using another (your old?) PC to convert the WMA files to another format (I would suggest using Apple Lossless, as otherwise you will lose some sound quality unnecessarily--unless the WMAs are WMA Lossless...), your only other option would be to play the files with software for OS X other than iTunes. In that case, you might consider VLC, which is handy for almost countless other audio and video files anyway.

  • Video Files not importing into iTunes Library.

I have been converting my movie file into mp4 format so i can use them on my iPod video. I converted all of the files and then added their folder to the iTunes Library, but only some fo the videos show up. I have tried to add these files individually, changing their names, even moving them to antoher folder and adding them. What can I do to get these files into the library and on to my iPod?

I wish i knew. It seems to be very random in which videos it doesn't add. Is it too much to ask to watch SNL clips on my iPod?

  • Why duplicate files when importing

Why am I getting duplicate files when importing into iTunes? I am dragging and dropping them into iTunes. When I ask to find file in finder, I am sent to the iTunes music folder and there are 2 files for each song added. I don't have that kind of space!
I spent several hours trying to clean this up and deleted duplicates out of iTunes library, then out of the music folder. I tried to test which file of the song I was deleating (orig file, not file1) and now .... iTunes can't find about 3,500 tracks that will need to be reassociated. What is the easiest way to do that?
I'm not sure if this is another subject or not, but when I go to delete a track it does not show up in trash first. I only get one window asking me if I want to delete this - click yes and it's forever gone. Do not pass trash. YIKES. Is there a way to get it into trash -> then empty trash like everything else?
    Thx.
iTunes 11.0.1 on Mac OSX 10.6.8

Maybe I may have figured out part of my question ... these albums have a .mu3 file. Would that be causing the duplicates?

  • File/folder behaviour when importing in iTunes?

I've recently purchased an iPhone 3G. I've also got a substantial mp3 collection (121GB), all ordered in a Genre/Artist/Album subfolder structure. Every file has an ID3 tag properly filled out.
As you can tell I'm an organized person - at least when it comes to music.
I need to know, when I hit the "Import folder", what will happen in the hard drive: Will my folders be modified in any way by iTunes? Or will iTunes create a separate folder with the +same songs+ in it, but just a different order/filetype? Will the new files (or the old files) have some sort of modification done to them, like a format change or a different tag added?
I'd like it if iTunes could "read" my files, but I don't want them modified or doubled-up - that would just ruin all the work I've done and take too much space.
How does iTunes manage the original files and the new files once I import them?

Wow - this was a crucial find for me. I just converted to Win7 64bit with a fresh install of all programs including iTunes. When I went to import my library I checked the "Keep iTunes Media files Organized" not knowing exactly what the impact would be. I found out that it completely re-wrote the native folder and filenames in different scenarios (in windows explorer). Once a file was imported into iTunes it hated special character like hyphens or commas ultimately converting them to underscores. Itunes also combined some albums into a single album/folder like Elton John's Greatest Hits 1970-2002 instead of keeping 2 seperate albums for each disc. Other scenarios I was experiencing was basically rewritten incomplete album names. With nearly 40,000 songs (485GB) on my hard drive (8000 songs on my ipod) it was extremely painful to see names being changed without rhyme or reason.
Simply unchecking both of those boxes got me back to my naming and filing conventions. Essentially back to good with no further conversion of special characters or file names.
Unfortunately now I am going back and re-correcting all of the folders and files that were changed under the "checked" settings. Much happier with the organization of the database now.
    Thanks for sharing the note.

  • Speed variations when importing in iTunes

I'm using iTunes on a HP desktop.  When importing a CD, sometimes it will do it it very quickly (26x), and other times very slowly (4x).  I'm curious why that would be the case?  The CDs are part of a multi-disc collection, so it would seem that the disc manufacturer is the same for both CDs.

  • I have some dts cd's that I want to import into itunes on a windows pc and then play back on my apple tv 3 (i think its 3, about 9 months old) to listen to through my onkyo amp via hdmi as dts, when I play back I just get white noise.

I have some dts cd's that I want to import into itunes on a windows pc and then play back on my apple tv 3 (i think its 3, about 9 months old) to listen to through my onkyo amp via hdmi as dts, when I play back I just get white noise. I have seen lots of old posts which go on about converting files but am wondering wherher at the current time with the latest versions of itunes and apple tv whether this should by now be a virtual play out of the box solution.
I have tried connecting my atv to the amp by optical cable but that didnt produce anything better and am assuming that a hdmi cable should be able to reproduce everything an optical cable does.
Is this something I should be able to achieve without having to recode the files?
Tracks are imported to itunes as apple lossless, have tried setting the atv audio settings to auto and 16 bit, neither works yet I was told some time ago by an apple rep that the atv shoud be able to handle any type of audio as it just passes it to the amp to decode. I am not stupid but not that technical when it comes to audio and bitrates etc so any explaination would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any help

Willy, the procdedure you describe works perfectly for AppleTV G1. In fact, I frequently play DTS music discs ripped to my iTunes library as Apple Lossless (ALAC) and synched to the ATV. What happens is that, as far as iTunes and the ATV are concerned, a conventional stereo 16/44 audio file is being played; however my reciever detects the DTS data stream, and instead of outputting static, it decodes the 5.1 channels correctly. This process parallels the way DTS discs were designed to be played back: a conventional CD player is connceted, via digital out, to a DTS-aware reciever/pre-amp and the two channels of static are recognized as 6 channels of DTS-encoded audio.
However this process will only work if the player (CD, ATV, PC, etc.) sends a "bit-perfect" 16 bit/44.1 khz data stream to the decoding device. In the case of ATV G2 and G3, as has been discussed elsewhere, the unit resmaples all audio - including 16/44 PCM (Redbook CD)  - to 16/48. While this is not a big deal for conventional audio CDs, MP3s, and AAC files, it mangles the fragile DTS datastream and renders it undecodable. The resulting static that you hear is just like the static you would hear if you played a DTS CD on a non-DTS capable system.
Sadly, I'm not aware of any easy way around this. You could use a program like Foobar (and the DTS plugin) to convert your DTS CDs to 6-ch .wav or .flac file. From there you could transcode the file to AC-3 and then mux it into a video container that ATV supports. You may need add a dummy video track, for iTunes/AppleTV to be ok with the file, though I'm not sure. This may be a lot of work.
Sorry for the bad news. I wish that the iTunes/ATV ecosystem had better multi-channel audio support.
    Steven
