Duplicates and Deleted Songs

Besides the duplicates problem, has anyone found music - installed from music CD - missing from their music library?
I've found many albums missing from the library since the recently 9.1.1.xx upgrades. The folder still contains the album art, small art, folder art, etc.. but the songs are gone.
I'll always found some links would break, but one could search and repair those. This total loss of songs is new.

If you were too enthusiastic in removing duplicates you may have removed the only physical copy of some of your files.
*Adding new items/removing orphans*
Try iTunes Folder Watch or iTunes Library Updater. Folder Watch is much faster on the adding files front, can be set to run in the background and includes a useful exclusion feature, however it’s really slow at removing orphans. iTLU is better for this although doing it manually after looking at a list of proposed removals generated by Folder Watch is probably faster still. iTLU can also be set to update iTunes when you've used 3rd party tools to change tag info.
You may need to amend the list of file types these programs look for. My list includes
.mp3 .mp4 .m4a .m4b .m4p .m4v .mov .wav .aif .mid .ipa .ipg .ite .itlp .m4r .pdf
Note the last 6 types won't actually be recognised in the library so should either be omitted from the search or you can add (at least for Folder Watch) individual exclusions for files you know are already in your library.

I've copied my itunes library onto an external hard drive.  Is there any way I can do this and delete songs from my PC without also deleting from the external drive? Already lost two songs!!!  I just want a back up - using a work PC and don't want others accessing my songs.  Hope someone can help.  Thanks!

I see. To get a better idea of what is being stored where please download and run the script iTunesInfo which should output something like this:
I'm interested in the block of 4 results starting ITL location. If your profile name shows up somewhere replace it with <Name>.  It is also worth checking under Edit > Preferences > Advanced to see where iTunes thinks your media is supposed to go. My script estimates the setting based on the location of the first media file it can actually find.

  • How to sync iPhone photos with iPad and Mac without duplicates and deleted photos?

I have a MacBook Pro (OS X 10.8.5, iPhoto 9.4.3), an iPad2 (ios 6.1.3) and iPhone (ios 7.0.4).  I take my pictures on the iPhone and use the iPad for viewing.  I use the MBP for storage and backup.  ios 7 seems to organize the photos nicely, so I no longer need iPhoto for organizing.
What is the best, easiest and most efficient way to share, save and backup photos (iCloud prefered versus plugging devices into the MBP) between the 3 devices without duplicates and deleted photos?  With Photo Streaming turned on, I get duplicates and it retains photos that I have deleted.
On all three devices, I turned on Photos & Camera > My Photo Stream and Shared Photo Streams and iCloud > Photo Stream.
On the MBP, I have everything under Photo Stream EXCEPT Automatic Import (I took off recently hoping to eliminate duplicates).
If someone else already asked this question, I apologize.  This is very confusing.

While waiting for a reply, you can read the documentation that was in the box your iPad came in.  It's a book about a Spanish guy called Manual.
The answer is iTunes.  Download it.  Install it.  Read the instructions.  Use it.

    Hi ellafromva,
From your description, it sounds like you may have iTunes Match activated; you may find the following article helpful:

  • Delete the duplicate and delete the song??

almost had it with itunes. please someone convince me that jriver isn't better than itunes if you actually have a collection!! Here's the latest in frustrations:
Thought i would clean up the library the other day and deleted about 30 gigs in "display duplicates" view. Wow! I knew i had some duplicate songs but 30 gigs?
hmmm...the brain starts to work now
"let me see if i can play these" i thinks to myself---after the deed was done.
    gone.
but the tags are still there! wheeee! at least i can still look at dumb ones and zero's display in algorithims on my screen that amount to nothing! cool!!
and here's the best part: i have 289 albums left to go in duplicate mode!!
    HERE'S THE KEY PROBLEM:
all the songs show as duplicate, but 99.99% are...the majority are duplicate song names pointing to the same file.
any way to clean this up would be great!

iTunes seems to work fine on fairly large collections. Haven't played with jriver media center much - isn't it a PC program? In my limited exposure it seemed counterintuitive sometimes, but, that might be because I'm more used to iTunes. Then the poor guy showing off his PC driven stereo to me had to reboot the PC part way through Probably a rare occurance, or so he says. On the other hand when I was showing what iTunes could do, I got the dreaded spinning beachball for about 30 seconds. So neither is perfect.
Dealing with duplicates is tricky business. On my collection showing duplicates mostly shows different versions of the same song by the same artist. Only a very few are actual duplicates that I imported twice by mistake.
You've learned the hard way that if you throw the "duplicate" song into the trash, then it goes into the trash. But wait, if you have not yet emptied your trash the music files may be sitting there and you can put them back where they belong.
Like anything you have to take it slowly and easy with iTunes so you learn how it works as you go. . .
It really is not a bad music player.
There are two parts to iTunes; the iTunes Library file, and the iTunes Music folder. The actual music is in the iTunes Music folder - never trash anything from there unless you are sure you never want to have it again. The iTunes Library file is just a database that points to your music.
If you somehow end up with multiple pointers in the iTunes Library file to the same music file in iTunes Music then when you delete the entry in iTunes Library you do not want to actually delete the music file in iTunes Music.
I haven't tried TP2's tip to search out duplicate/dead/ghost entries in the database - it might work, but before I tried it I'd see what it does on a small sample of the library, and then only if I had a good current backup of both the Library file and the Music folder. A music collection usually represents lots of time and money, it should be backed up (one big advantage of a digital music collection is it is much easier to backup than in the old analog days).

  • How can I remove and delete songs that are stored in iCloud? I really dislike this feature.

I really hate this idea of having all of the songs that aren't on your iPhone being out back in there through I cloud. They aren't on my device for a reason. Thanks a lot iTunes.
How can I remove and delete these songs from my iTunes account in purchased history.

  • Find and delete songs unable to locate

I have a lot of songs in my iTunes that I don't have on my computer anymore. Some are marked with the exclamation point, but others aren't because I haven't tried playing them yet. What is the easiest way to find which songs can't be located and delete them? Thanks!

If it was that simple to do with the hundreds on songs like this littering my library, then I would have done it already instead of posting on here.
Do you have any helpful advice, like the name of program perhaps? I have not been able to find anything through web search. If I had, I wouldn't be turning to this forum to fix a problem I had already solved.

  • Searching for and deleting songs with explicit lyrics

Hello. Over the years my song library has grown a bunch, but my music preferences have changed. I no longer wish to suddenly hear a song throwing the F-bomb around. Since I listen on my iPhone and cannot delete the song immediately, I need to know if there is a way to search for songs in iTunes for explicit lyrics so that I can delete them from my library. Is there a way?
    Thanks for the help!!!!

Thre is not a way to do it directly that I am aware of but you can go down your song list and just look for the red explicit label and delete it that way.

  • Am I the only person who misses the drag and drop method of adding and deleting songs on iTunes devices?

I am constantly getting frustrated with the newer versions of iTunes because my different apple devices have different amounts of storage. I miss the days when I could drag and drop songs to various devices. I don't always want the same songs on all devices, so I don't like to sync because I sometimes lose something I want to keep on that device. I am just curious if I'm the only one who misses this feature or is there a way of doing this that I've just not found? Thanks.

In the Summary tab of iTunes - when the iDevice is connected to your Mac - select Manually Manage Music and Videos. You should be able to drag and drop.
If you don't see the sidebar and the device is syncing automatically, you can enable the sidebar from the ITunes Menu - View>Show Sidebar. The. You can click on your device name imder the devices heading, then click on the Summary Tab.
You can also disable auto syncing in iTunes>Preferences>Devices>Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing autonatically.
I never auto sync and never have. I select Sync Only Checked Songs And Videos in the Summary tab and I can still drag and drop songs. I can also select the albums, playlist, or artists that I want to sync by using this method.

  • Right Click and deleted Song from Playlist and want it back

I had duplicates in my playlist so deleted seconds...Now the one left won't play... Have tried to add the song back to the playlist and it shows up but still won't play.  I've deleted the playlist and then restored but the song(s) still won't play.  I can get another artist's version but not the artist I want.  CAN I GET THE SONG(S) BACK? If so, how?

As a user, you only have the option to restore entire playlists. If you want specific songs to be restored, you'll have to get in contact with the staff via an online contact form; if you get a no-reply, just reply and it will be send to a staff member.

  • Itunes duplicates and removes songs

    Hello all!
I'm having some problems with iTunes for a while now. I'd like to use the feature that all my imported songs are automatically positioned in the iTunes folder i've specified and that iTunes then renames those files and neatly puts them in folders. This seems to work just fine.
However, although I know for sure I have not been importing new music for a while now, sudden duplicate songs keep popping up. Complete albums will duplicate itself and I keep spending time to remove those additional songs. They keep coming back!
Simoultaneously I've noticed that from some albums that are still intact on my iPod (I sync manually...) suddenly some songs seem to dissapear! For example on some albums I'd suddenly miss song 3, 6, 7, 9 and 11 out of 13.
Does anybody else notice the same problems? It doesn't seem safe to use iTunes at all to organize my music collection...

Rule 1. Backup, then if something truly goes missing you can fetch it back again.
    Rule 2. Don't ignore Rule 1.
iTunes doesn't appear to do any reorganizing of tracks except when you actively edit tags or, if some third party tool has made a change, when it has cause to read the data, say during playback. If a file is removed from the drive iTunes should retain an entry to it which it will flag up with an exclamation mark if it ties to access the track. Likewise iTunes doesn't scan your drives for new tracks so duplicates should only be generated if you actively reimport the same content.
To make sure Windows Media Player is leaving your content alone take a look at this post.
For help with duplicates see my DeDuper script and this thread for background on it.

  • Transferring frrom iTunes to a new ipod and deleting songs on the old

    Hi,
I'm new to this forum. My Ipod nano is almost full, so I wish to delete the playlists/ songs on it and give it to another family member, but without deleting anything in iTunes. Them I want to transfer everything in my existing iTunes onto a new, bigger ipod. What's the workflow for doing that safely?
    Thanks.
    Nano   Windows XP

1 - Hand them them iPod and say, "Happy iPod to
    you!".
2 - Plug in the new iPod, watch it load, unplug it
and think, "Happy iPod to me" and use it.
    It really is that simple.
    Thanks.
How do I delete playlists from the original ipod without deleting them from itunes (so that they are unchanged and ready to synch. with the new one)?

  • Find exact duplicates and delete them?

I noticed in iTunes you have the option to find and diplay duplicates.. I have also read that if you hold the option key it shows TRUE duplicates. How do I do this? Do I hold the option key then go to file?

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2905
It seems find exact duplicates extends the comparison from just track name and artist to include album too.  I still would not trust it 100%.  For example, one of Niel Young's albums has two tracks with the identical title of two songs (plugged and unplugged).

  • I loaded the profile song toolbar twice, how do I get rid of the duplicate and profile song will not show when I am on my FB page anymore it gives me a strange security error

1.) Just tried reloading the toolbar for profile song. I now have two and not sure how to get rid or uninstall one of them.
2.) Profile Song used to load within my FB page itself when I logged in and now it doesnt show at all there.
