Duplicates and preview vs. iphoto

when i try to import my pictures from my camera. I can only do i through iphoto.
im really wondering what's the deference between iphoto and just putting in a folder and using the preview to open things. i noticed that iphoto creates a smaller copy of the picture (if you search in the "all images" folder). which i think its rediculous cuz it just wastes space. i found out how to delete the copies but its a pain. any way of importing without creating that copy. or without using iphoto?

Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
iPhoto is a photo management SQL database system that is very powerful and gives you many search and editing capabilities - if you think it is "rediculous cuz it just wastes space." then you should not be using it - and you certainly do not understand it.
To stop using iphoto launch iPhoto and in the iPhoto menu go to preferences and set the preference for "when a camera is connected:" to do nothing or to open image capture - which ever you prefer.
With image capture you can download photos and do what you want with them - or if you choose do nothng and your camera will mount ot the desktop as a removable disk you can just move your photos from the camera to where ever you want and do what ever you want with them
Not that since iPhoto is a database it is very important that you do not modify the iPhoto library in any way at any time via the finder - doing so will corrupt your iPhoto library and cause youto lose data

  • Deleting duplicates and thumbnails in iphoto or

As a 20+ yr PC user I made the fatal mistake of trying to manage my imac photos as in a PC. Running out of space on my imac, I exported all my photos to a 1TB external. Somehow, I wound up with duplicates and triplicates and even thumbnails. I purchased Duplicate Annihilator, but it looks for an exact match, is unstable, can only handle so many files and slow as molasses. Therefore, DA won't identify my thumbnails as dups. Trying to identify thumbnails in iPhoto is useless. All I want is the file size under the thumbnail when viewing photos so I can select and delete the thumbs. Multiple sort options like by name then by size would help as well. My library is over 100GB as a result. I need some serious help here. Is there another app out there that would get the job done more efficiently?
    Thanks,
    Andy

There are no duplicates in the iPhoto Library. There can be up to three versions of the pics, but no duplicates. iPhoto always preserves your original file, edits are carried out on a copy - the modified version - and there is also a tiny thumbnail for display in the iPhoto Window. Duplicate Annihilator is for searching in iPhoto, not the Finder.
    When you did this:
I searched for all .jpg files and then moved them to the drive. I did not use iphoto to export. So I got every photo from every folder.
You accessed the Library via the Finder and the Finder doesn't understand the Library.
The easiest way to solve this problem is to trash the product of this process and start over.
What exactly are you trying to do:
Want to move the iPhoto Library?
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Or simply export the files from iPhoto:
Select the pics in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export.
Choose the Kind: you want - Original version, Current version etc
    Export
Result a single copy of the file.

  • How can I print multiple copies of the same photo onto one sheet of paper?  Do I have to Duplicate the photo in iPhoto and then select them all?

How can I print multiple copies of the same photo onto one sheet of paper?  Do I have to Duplicate the photo in iPhoto and then select them all?

no - you simply have to select the option to print mucliples of a photo on a page
select the photo and go to the file menu ==> print - select the printer, paper size and print size and click customize - in the tool bar click on the settings icon (the gear looking thingy) and select "multiple of the same photo per page" and the preview will reflect this option showing a full page of the selected size photos

  • I want to know the difference between iphoto master folder and previews folder

I want to know the difference between iphoto library master folder and previews folder.. my pictures is stored in master but part of them is also copied into previews.. it occupied too much space.. if I can't change anything in iphoto library, any way to save the space for iphoto? 70G for almost 15,000 pictures, is it reasonable?
i use mac book pro, ilife 11..

70GB for 15,000 photos is reasonable, yes, if the photo files are large.
DO NOT meddle with the contents of your iPhoto Library in any other way than using the commands available in the iPhoto application. What appear to be duplicate files stored in different parts of the library are NOT duplicates, and if you attempt to save space by deleting things in the Finder, you will wreck your library and land in a world of trouble.

  • I like to manually upload my photo's to my computer, then import them to iPhoto. My problem with this is that now I have duplicates and it's taking up way to much space on my computer. Is there any way to stop iPhoto from creating duplicates like this?

I always manually transfer photo's from my SD card to a new folder under Pictures, and then import them into iPhoto. After doing this for quite some time I know realize that I have all these duplicate photo's between iPhoto library and Pictures and a ton of wasted space. I want to continue to upload photo's to a new folder so I can organize them myself and then access them anytime through the finder, if I upload them through iPhoto then they're stored in "iPhoto Library" which can only be accessed through iPhoto. Is there anyway to stop iPhoto from duplicating photo's and just use it to catalog photo's from Pictures? Also on a side note, when using multiple SD cards in one folder, my camera often comes up with duplicate names for totally separate photo's, anyone have an suggestions for this?

Yes you can set iPhoto to run in Referenced mode but don't. It makes more work for zero advantage, is unnecessary and only storing up problems for the future.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3062728?tstart=0
has how to do, and why you shouldn't.
Using iPhoto makes the question about the filenames moot too... Other than that you'll need to renae the files.

  • Printing in black and white in iPhoto/Preview

    Hello guys,
I have real trouble trying to find how simply to choose print colour document in black and white from iPhoto or Preview. There is simply no option for that. Instead I open document with Chrome, or save photo as pdf and then open with Chrome to print it in black and white.
    Any advice will be appreciated.

anyone know how to print with just the black cartridge. the setting use to be in the tiger print pane, but i cant find it in leopard, all i see is grayscale or color III. did they take it away? or did they just figure that no one used it, and that grayscale was good enough?

  • I've downloaded Mavericks and now I cannot duplicate photos in iPhoto.  I highlight the photo and Photo Duplicate and nothing happens.  How can I duplicate?

Has anyone had the same problem of photo duplication in iPhoto with the new Mavericks OS?  All my stuff is updated and now, with Mavericks, I cannot duplicate my photos in iPhoto.

    Works here.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

  • Photos from iPhoto showing duplicates and wrong dates. Help!

    Hello everyone,
I have been battling my iphone and computer for the last few days trying to figure this one out. No luck. Now I turn to all of you.
The problem is basically this: My iPhone photos app was showing duplicates of many photos taken in the last few months. They would literally be side by side. There were no edits, photostream is turned off... Those duplicates do NOT show up in iPhoto on my macbook.
So I tried a few recommendations from some forums I read. I rebuilt the iPhoto database. I deleted the plist file for iPhoto. I restored my phone.
Now, not only do I still have all of the duplicates, but I also have photos showing up severely out of date order. The thing that makes this obvious is that photos of my sonm, who was born in June, are showing up scattered through random months of the preceding year. I am sure other photos are now out of order as well. I only see this on my phone, and not in iPhoto.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you,
    Bret

    anyone?
by the way, after some restoring, the duplicates are at least gone. Now the problem is simply that recent photos are showing up in months past, and in several past events on my iphone. This is in the photos app as well as iphoto. In iPhoto, I can check the info of one of those photos and it shows a....June date for example... but it shows up in the photo order back in february or march.
If anyone has any thoughts on this it all it would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • NEF files stopped being displayed on iPhoto and Preview

    Hi everybody,
all of a sudden my iPhoto and Preview show Nikon NEF files with weird colors. My OSX is 10.8.4 + Camera Raw 8.1. I have updated my NEF codec and tried to reinstall iPhoto from scratch but I got nowhere. Anyone with the same trouble?
here's an example of what I get:
    Thanks

RAW 4.08 is the newest RAW converter within OS X and is used by iphoto , Aperture and other applications. there are issues with Nikon cameras. You have to delet tho files and go back and install 4.07 as outlined here
    Solution
Delete or restore from Time Machine
    /System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle
    /System/Library/CoreServices/RawCameraSupport.bundle
    Download
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1666
    Reinstall 4.07. Finished.

Sorry, I don't understand this - you don't want Adobe [Reader] not to open when doing what?  On what operating system?

  • I have duplicates and thumbs in my iPhoto

    Hi,
I have at least 2000 files (duplicates) not larger than 30KB (I guess they are the thumbs?) . I deleted a lot of them manually but I think they appear again!
Also, is there a way to find duplicates (full size ones) and trash one of them like in iTunes?
I have a backup of the photos in an external. What do you guys recommend I do to get rid of this mess?
    Thanks!

    Hi tribe,
First I would like to know how you got all the thumbs in your iPhoto Library. did you import another iPhoto Library into the one you have? Did you create a new library and import another iPhoto Library with version 6? iPhoto 6 is not smart enough to only import the full size images like iPhoto 5 was when you used the command file>add to library, and then point to another library to import.
When you say you have a backup of the photos on the external, is it an iPhoto Library folder, or just the full size images?

  • How do you merge iphoto libraries without duplicates and maintaining events?

I have a few iphoto libraries on my computer that I need to merge, without duplicates, and maintaining the seperate events.  Does anyone know how to do this efficiently?

"Terence Devlin" does not work for Apple, for the makers of Library Manager and has no beneficial interest in whether or not you use or purchase this or any other app. If "Terence Devlin" did have such an interest the terms of use of the Forum would require that he add such information to the post. No, Aperture cannot merge iPhoto Libraries. Aperture can convert them to Aperture Libraries and merge them, but that would be of no use to an iPhoto user, as iPhoto can't open an Aperture Library.
And the fact remains that the paid version of Library Manager is the only way to merge Libraries

  • Both iPhoto and Preview left 1 cm out my 4x6 inch (10x15 cm) at the bottom

    Hi,
I test twice (printing) and both iPhoto and Preview left 1 cm out my 4x6 inch (10x15 cm) at the bottom of the photo paper. I'm using 10.5.6 and a HP Deskjet F380. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First try the basic fix:  close iPhoto, delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iPhoto and see if that helps.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • None of my apple apps can export files, including Mail, iPhoto, Aperture and Preview.

None of my apple apps can export files, including Mail, iPhoto, Aperture and Preview. When I try to export a file from any of these programs, the app hangs for a few seconds and then does nothing, not even open an export dialogue. Same thing happens when I try to attach a file to an email. Also, maybe related and maybe not, Photoshop will crash after the splash screen. All of these app function properly when using a different User Account.
I've tried deleting my application preferences in my user library and when that didn't work, I deleted my account and then created a new one that used the same user directory, which still didn't fix anything.
I don't really want to make a new user from scratch and have to re-enter license numbers, re-calibrate monitors, recover bookmarks, contancts, etc. etc. if I don't have to, so I would be grateful for any advice.
    Thanks!
