Duplicates entries in "open with" menu AGAIN....

Hey guys
I have an issue with the Open With Crtl + click menu, i get duplicates of the programs that can be used to open the file, i konw that this problem was there since tiger and leopard, but now with SL i'm dissapointed of this issue AGAIN. I hope Apple its aware of this forum and resolves this problem with an update soon
If anyone knows a practical solution, please post it
Thanks and greetings from Mexico
Oscar

Hi again: OK, I am not really losing my mind, honest. Right clicking on a PDF file on the desktop and selecting "Open With" gave me not Duplicates, but Quadruplicates of each choice. I then selected the same PDF file and clicked "File" from the menu bar and then "Open With" and all was good, only one of each choice. I then go back to the "Right Click" method, all back to normal, one of each. Strange indeed.

  • Duplicate Entries on "Open With" Menu.

The subject pretty much explains the problem.
I haven't made any major changes to my system, but I recently noticed that when I right click (2 button mouse) on something and go to the Open With menu, I now have duplicate entries.
    IE: Adobe Image Ready
    Adobe Image Ready
    Adobe Photoshop
    Adobe Photoshop
I think you get the point.
This seems to only be when I do this to images.
    Any Ideas.
    Thanks

That's handled by LaunchServices and sounds like a corrupt database. See http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/resetlaunchservices.html and
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031215144430486 for details on how to rebuild it

  • Duplicate entries under "Open With..." menu?

I recently exchanged my troubled iMac for a new one and migrated the User Accounts during the inital setup. Now that I've installed all of my old apps, the "Open With" contextual menu item shows duplicates of some (not all) of the available apps. For example, right-clicking on a JPG file shows the following:
    Camino
    ColorSync Utility
    ColorSync Utility
    DivX Player
    Preview
    Quicktime Player
    Quicktime Player
    Safari
    Safari
This is also happening only on my user account, none of the others on the same machine.
How do I fix this problem?

Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. Paste the following command line in its entirety immediately after the cursor then press return:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/L aunchServices.framework/Versions/Current/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain system -domain local -domain user

  • Duplicate programs in "Open With" menu

How can I clean up the menu that shows when I right click and choose "Open With". I have duplicate programs (for example VLC shows twice). Any way to fix this?

Try rebuilding your launch services database.
    run the following terminal command
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

  • Duplicate Items in Open With Menu

Whenever I right / command click to get the 'open with' dialog the list has duplicates of most applications in the list. This happened after I upgraded to Leopard. Any ideas how to fix it?

There are several possible reasons this happens.
One is that you have different versions of the apps on your drive, or that you have other drives mounted, each with a copy of the apps. Each instance you see of an app is actually a different one, & thus you have a choice of which one to launch.
Another is that the launch services database is corrupted & needs to be rebuilt. Several third party utilities make this easy to do without resorting to the command line. If you use one for this purpose, make sure it has been updated for Leopard compatibility. Two such utilities are Cocktail (shareware) & Onyx (freeware).

  • "open with" menu, QT entry is duplicated...

    hi!
i have the following problem with the "open with" menu:
this occurs only with quicktime and .flv, .wmv, .divx and .asf files.
    i´ve tryed following terminal command
    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/
    LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister \ -kill -f -r -domain local
    -domain system -domain user
    without success.

OK, got you on the "Default".
Well, you tried LaunchServices and now, we've tried what usually works for duplicate items in "Save As" or "Open with" dialog. Why don't you create a new account, name it "test" and see how your "open with" works in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.
EDIT: Actually, I'm a bit surprised that LaunchServices command did not clear it up.
Did you restart or log out after the command ran?

  • Open with menu duplicates. osx 10.8.1

It shows duplicates of VLC in the open with menu when I go to open a movie file. I am running osx mountain lion 10.8.1. How do I remove duplicates or fix the open with menu?

If you are nervous about using Terminal forcommand  a you may understand,  not I concur with Bjorn. It is a means of resetting the menu.
Resetting the 'Open With' menu will remove duplicates and ghost applications (ones you have deleted) from the list. You reset the 'Open With' menu by rebuilding the Launch Services database your Mac maintains. There are multiple ways to rebuild the Launch Services database, including third-party system utilities like Cocktail and Onxy.
If you don't own a system utility that can rebuild the Launch Services database, don't worry; you can perform the rebuild yourself using the Terminal command set outlined in Bjorn's post..

  • Why are there duplicate results in the Open With menu?

I own an iMac with the latest version of OSX (I forget what it is). As you can see in this image, I am going to open an image using the Open With menu, and there are a lot of repeats. In addition to the repeats, some apps show up that no longer exist and some apps don't show up that still do exist. For example, I no longer have RockMelt on my operating system. I also don't have the version of Pixelmator listed: I trashed that version and installed a different version, but when I click on Pixelmator in the menu, it reverts to Preview because that version of Pixelmator no longer exists. This is a minor issue but it is really bothering me because whenever I want to open Pixelmator, I have to go through the whole process of clicking Other and browsing my applications folders to get to it. Any help would be EXTREMELY appreciated and I would reward you with imaginary cookies (Yum!).
    Seriously though, I need help.

Boot in safe mode. This will cause certain caches maintained by the system to be rebuilt.
Safe mode is much slower to boot than normal.
When the login screen appears, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test. There's no need to log in while in safe mode.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.

  • GDM no more "open with" menu after last Gnome upgrade (3.16.0)

    Hi,
Using nautilus, I used to have an "open with" menu showing a list of alternative applications to open a file, such as in this picture:
    https://ubuntugenius.files.wordpress.co … .png?w=500
This was quite handy as I could use different applications to open the same type of file without changing the default association each time I use an alternative application.
Since I have updated my system, Gnome has been upgraded and now there is only an "open with another application" entry in the "right click menu", which, if I use it, change the default application for the type of the selected file.
The list of alternative applications is still the same as before, but the behaviour is now different, since these application do not appear directly in the menu any more, and since selecting any of them will change the default file-application association. For me, this is a bit annoying since I wants to use two different applications to open the same type of file.
I could not find anything on the internet related to this vanishing of the "open with" menu.
I am curious to know if anybody has the same problem as me. I wonder if it is a feature or if there is a problem somewhere?

That behavior of nautilus seems to be a new "feature". I really have no idea why they change such things.
At least, there's allready a bugreport for this:

  • Open with menu not showing icons

Hi, since i installed Mavericks i've been experiencing some issues, and the one i need to solve right know is this:
In this example is only with media players but it happens with other apps too, both system and non-system apps. I've tried this command:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain user;killall Finder;echo "Open With has been rebuilt, Finder will relaunch"
that is used to delete duplicated items on "Open With" menu but it doesn't solve this Icon issue.. I also deleted com.apple.LaunchServices.plist  from ~/Library/Preferences/  and it didn't helped. I don't know what to do anymore.
Please help me out with this, i don't want to do a fresh install again.

OS X does that constantly. If you click anywhere away from the contextual menu to close it, then perform the same right click, then they'll show.

  • Divided Open With menu

In Leopard, but never an OS before, the Open With Menu has some dividers in it. They don't always show up, or show up in the same places, and I've not been able to make sense out of it. I don't have any classic apps installed. Any idea why or how this is happening? See http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/3025/picture1vz9.png

On my computer the divider is usually below the default app.
However on a PDF I just looked at, there is a second divider like yours, just above Color Sync Utility.app
There might be primary and secondary apps, to the system, that can open the file.
But since I can duplicate what you are seeing, it's most likely normal.
On most files, I do not see this second divider, but on PDFs (and possibly others) I do see it.

  • Double open with menu

    Hello,
I am getting a double 'open with' menu after right clicking on a file. I am not getting double entries of programs which is fixable by cleaning up launch services database, I literally get a two working open with menus.
    Here's what I am seeing:
    http://yfrog.com/j5doubleopenwithmenuj
For the record: I have already tried to clean up launch services and it didn't work.
I would really appreciate your help on how to fix this .
    Thank you in advance.
    Sincerely,
    Benasbn

Hi, I'm getting the same problem and though I've tried various suggested solutions, nothing fixed the problem. In an last years post in this forum, someone noticed that this is a known issue (a bug or not I can't say). So, the question is there any solution?

  • Contextual Open With Menu shows old non-existent Applications

Open With Menu: Shows multiple applications. It even shows versions of older applications that are no longer on my hard drive. And if I select these older version, those older applications launch! I've checked the About... menu selection on these older versions, and sure enough it says the older version. Example: I only have the latest version of Opera 9.24 on my drive, but 3 older versions, plus 4 of one of them show. I can click each one and they ALL launch with separate windows for each one.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305627
I followed the instructions to trash <com.apple.LaunchServices.plist> file and Restarted and the menu STILL lists all the applications. I then checked the Prefs folder again, and the <com.apple.LaunchServices.plist> hadn't even recreated itself yet.
    I'm totally stummped

I just realized that in my previous post I neglected to mention, that the problem has quickly returned. Sorry for any confusion.
Now after two tries, I notice that some .gif files have Preview icons others Photoshop. Some .gif files are listed to open with Preview, others with PS.
If I use Cmd + i on a wrong iconed file and scroll down to any other app, select it, let the icon change, then without doing anything else, scrolling back up to the default (Preview), the icon finally changes correctly. Change All is now available, but clicking it has no effect on any other files that have the PS icon. Some don't even change over from PS being the default app to Preview.
Same problem with .txt files. Some TextEdit, others Excel. So.. I am just changing them one by one, whenever I need to open one that is wrong.
At least the multiple apps in the Open With pulldown are gone
    I'd sure like to know:
    1) Why are my Library files corrupting and
    2) Why is Dr. Smoke's fix creating icon problems
    3) Out of the 1,000s of threads, I wonder what the possibility of the good Doctor ever finding this on and helping us/me find a total solution. Help us Dr. Smoke, we need youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...

  • Open With menu won't clean up with Terminal command

After upgrading to 10.6 last month I can't clean up my open with menu. I ran the following in Terminal and it did nothing to clean up the duplicates:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
I used to run the following in Tiger and it never failed to clean up the duplicates:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServic es.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Must I delete “com.apple.LaunchServices” file located in Home/Library/Preferences
    OR
Remove launch services preference files, "com.apple.LaunchServices.plist" and "com.apple.LaunchServices.QuarantineEvents" in /username/Library/Preferences/ folder and then run the commands to clear and rebuild the launch services?

Thanks Andy. Running the following in Terminal cleaned up your problem with the Open With menus?
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
In December cnet.com wrote about running that command: "It gave only temporary relief to people dealing with sluggish Save and Save as menus." Using Onyx to clear caches and reset launch services was suggested instead. In October and March cnet.com wrote about rebuilding launch services to stop Finder caused crashes in Snow Leopard by trashing the launchservices preference files from user/library and then running the following in Terminal (custom file associations will revert back to default):
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -seed -rfv -all user, system, local
When I was still running Tiger last year and had a Launch Services problem caused by crashes in the Finder due to misplaced folder aliases, BD Aqua in this forum linked me to The X Lab @
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/resetlaunchservices.html#Anchor-Reset-47857
where I learned all I needed to do to straighten things out was delete the following cache files from HD/Library/Caches:
    com.apple.LaunchServices-0140.csstore
    com.apple.LaunchServices-014nnn.csstore
The information about resetting Launch Services at the X Lab stops with Leopard. There are no cache files in Snow Leopard like those from Tiger above and their equivalents in Leopard.

  • Duplications in "Open With" menu

Sometimes after I upgrade an application, the "Open with" menu item in the Finder lists this application twice. Curiously, it doesn't list the duplication in all accounts. Is there any way I can remove the duplicates?

Esaheiskanen, looking at the screenshot, I understand that it was removed properly.
You can simply go to >>>> Go> Utilites> Adobe Installer's and remove the CS6 App installed, Make sure you put a check on "Remove Prefrences" too.
Alternatively, you run the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool, to remove the CS6 Version.
    Cheers
