Duplicates, especially in FACES

Hello. I just started using Aperture 3 and just finished going through all my faces (phew!). Problem is though that when I go into Faces-mode, and see all the faces of a certain person, there are a bunch of duplicates.
I’m not sure but I think I even had to name some faces twice or three times. I can right click on one of the pictures and chose ”Show in project” to see where the picture is, but this only works for one (mostly the first). If I try to do this with the other (the duplicates) nothing happens. So it seems that there really isn’t any duplicates, only that Faces somehow counts them twice or three times.
If I flag or mark one of the pictures in a pair, the others do not change accordingly. If I make some adjustments they don’t change either. Something fishy is going on.
This also happens with some of my Smart Albums. I have a Smart Album set up to detect all RAW-images (File Type - is - RAW), and there are a lot of duplicates, and some of them are images that I have deleted (and emptied trash etc), and when I right-click and chose ”Show in project” nothing happens. However if I delete these files again they get moved to the trash, and I can even ”put them back” from the right-click-menu, but I have no idea where they go.
They are all mixes between RAW, Jpeg, adjusted/non-adjusted so I can’t see any connection there. Maybe I am just overlooking some basic function of Aperture or there is some serious buggyness going on.

Do you use a MobileMe Gallery? I had something similar with a Mobile Me Album a while ago. In some views (e.g. smart albums) I had duplicates, one version was the photo in a project, the other one in the MobileMe Gallery. The function "Show in Project" doesn't do anything on MobileMe Photos as well.
I don’t have MobileMe, and no other extra functions. Just my photos in my library.
Couple of thoughts
you may have your preferences set to create a new version when making adjustments, I would not have thought that this would trick AP but it is possible. I have not tried it sorry.
I have only done some adjustments to try it out, not anywhere near as much so as it could explain all these duplicates. I also don’t have that option on. But maybe somehow Aperture has created extra versions, how can I see if something is a version or a master?

How do I remove duplicate names in faces?

I have duplicate names in faces. As an example I have 6 different versions of "Andrew". I went ahead and merged them together so all the photos are under facebook version of "Andrew". However when I enter Andrew's name while marking faces in new photos, all 6 names appear. How do I remove them permantely so only one shows up in that list?
Also under iTunes, all 6 versions of "Andrew" show up in my iPhone and AppleTV faces sync list. How do I remove those from the list?

Things you might wish to check:
Duplicate entries in the name completion list on entering faces may come from your Address Book. If Andrew has a different name in the Address Book, he will appear twice in your faces list.
Merging stacks of faces is not always effective immediately in the same session - to give Aperture time to write its property lists it is a good idea to quit Aperture and to reopen again.
It is important to do the merging of faces from the Faces view activated by the "Faces" Button in the Library Inspector, not from the Faces button in the toolbar. Faces in the Toolbar View only show a subset of all faces, so it is easy to miss some stacks.
iTunes will show all the faces you have in Aperture. Once removed from Aperture they will disappear from iTunes.

How to stop duplicate entry in faces-config.xml?

hi,
i am facing a problem during working in WSAD 5.1.2 that whenever i open an existing jsp page in my workbench a duplicate entry of that page is created in the faces-cofig.xml file though the server is stopped. this is no problem during development or testing pahse but whenever i deploy the EAR in application server the pages are not running those have the duplicate entry in faces-config. so is there any way to stop the duplicate entry in the faces-config.xml?

With the new update, I can't figure out how to merge duplicate "Faces" files together, so I end up with one location per face.

With the newest update, I can't figure out how to merge duplicate files in "Faces" (iPhoto). I have more than one file going for a face, and use to be able to click and drag them into merging. Can't seem to do it now. Can anyone please help? Thanks

Are you talking about iPhoto or Photos? If Photos, do you mean that Photos has several files for the same person but they are labeled differently and you are trying to merge them as one? If so, then you have to rename one of the files to match the other one with the correct name. If this is not what you mean then could you explain more clearly what you mean. To give an example if I click on Faces and Photos shows me all named faces in the top and on the bottom there are suggested faces that can be dragged onto a face in the top level to merge. If you try to merge two face groups in the top level that are the same person but for some reason the faces are labeled differently you have to label them with the name you want to use and then they will automatically merge.

Duplicate names in AD

I need to create 2 user's with same first and lastname in AD.
We calcualte sAMAccountName, userPrincipalName and CN using rule library.
We are just incremeting a digit to the about all, and the first and lastname remaing same.
Our accountId is mapped to a employeenumber and samaccoutname, userprincipalname and cn are derived values and identity template is used.
I could create a duplicate in IDM but could not in AD.
Getting error:
Unable to set user info: 'SetInfo(): 0X80072035: , 00002016: SvcErr: DSID-031A0FC0, problem 5003 (WILL_NOT_PERFORM), data 0 , The server is unwilling to process the request.
Can anybody tell me why the server is unwilling to process the request.

the only source for duplicate suggestions and entries I ever noticed came from duplicate Address Book cards (synching problems with Mobile Me) and myself accidentally creating duplicate faces. I spend some time experimenting with the Photo Stream and Mobile Me albums, trying to create duplicate faces by importing from this sources, but that did not duplicate anything. Maybe you can create duplicate faces by importing from face book, but that I cannot try.
It is very easy to accidentally create duplicate faces without noticing, if you open the "Faces" from the Toolbar and not from the Library Inspector, especially if you have set "limit suggestions to the project".
If you do that, you will have to enter the full name for a face the first time you use it in this project, and if you type the name slightly different from your previous version, you have created a duplicate entry.
It is useful to occionally open faces from the Library Inspector to see all faces, not just a subset restricted to a project or folder, and to check for duplicate stacks of faces.
I have adopted the following strategy to avoid the creation of duplicate faces:
For family and friends (names I have to enter often) I use very short nicknames and prefix those names with an underscore character and disable "limit suggestions to the project". The underscore character as first character ensures that I only will be presented with the names I want, when I start to type the name. (footnote: I noticed that Kirby Krieger recommended a similar naming strategy for keywords, to prevent duplicate keywords when assigning keywords from the "add keywords" field)
Faces of people I only met once I label with "limit suggestions to the project" turned on, for their faces will only turn up in one project.

when i sync my nano with outlook i get names duplicated and even triplicated...whats up with that???

I recently upgraded my internet service to be faster on myIMac tiger 10.4.11 and that lasted about a day. Now not only do I get TBBFH but even opening up let's say Face book it loads very slowly . It's not the BBFH but next to the facebook it's a circle o

Even when I am using Safari or Firefox the spinning wheel of lines especially for face book just keeps spinning and it takes forever to load my pages. It was faster than this before I upgraded my internet service. I Check the speeds and those are fine (using a internet speed test). I have emptied all of my caches, cleaned my Mac with (Clean My Mac), I've taken out all old files, pictures, cleared my widgits, and I don't know what else to do. Is there some configuration I need to address some where inmy preferences? Do Ihave to just live with it? I do want to upgrade to Snow Leopard but, I can't afford that at this moment. Any ideas please forward. Another issue I have is that my IMac will not accept a DVD+Rdl but will accept any and all other DVD' and CD's what could cause that?

A warm welcome to Apple discussions!
A 2003 iMac cannot support Snow Leopard 10.6; you'd need an Intel processor and that cannot be retrofitted to your Mac. What does "About this Mac" in your Apple menu say for your processor speed? What does it say about how much RAM you have?
If the processor is 1ghz or faster, you can run OS 10.5; otherwise, you are maxed out at 10.4.11.
Also, are you running any commercial ("pay for") anti-virus or security software? They are notorious for slowing most Macs to a fraction of their speed potential.
A too-full hard drive can drag down performance, especially if you don't have a lot of physical RAM installed. If you single-click your hard drive icon and then do command i, you'll see the disk usage. Looks like this:
The value for "Used" should be no more than about 90 percent of "Capacity." In the example image, that drive has about 34 percent of its space used and 66 percent free--more than enough. Please post what you see for your Capacity and Used numbers
There are a few more things we might check but this is a good start.

Duplicate contacts after upgrading?

I started from
a Mac Power Book running Snow Leopard - too old to upgrade to Mountain Lion and afirst generation iPad
Not at all sure how either of those worked wo\ith iCloud
I switched to a MacMini on Mountain Lion and also from an iPhine 4 to an iPhine 5
So I sort of stumbled into iCloud before and after my upgrade
Now I have duplicates in my Contacts on my MacMini, my iphone 5 and my iPad but not yet on my Power book
my iCloud account for Mail on the iPad is empty
My calendar on the iPad has dupplicates. One has 158 duplicates
Obviously I screwed up in my transition if it before and since
I guess I have two problems
First to stop any more havoc probably by cleaning up settings for iCloud and on each device
Second to remove duplicates especially from Contacts deleting one at a time is tough when there over 100 dups

If the contacts are correct and unduplicated on your PowerBook, export them to a vCard by opening Address Book, select All Contacts on the left sidebar, click on a single contact, the press Command-A to select all contacts (they should all be highlighted), then go to File>Export>Export vCard and save it on your desktop.
Then delete all of your contacts on icloud.com (which will delete them from your other devices too.* Go to icloud.com, open Contacts. click on All Contacts on the left, to the right click on any single contact to select it, click on the Actions (gear shaped) icon at the bottom and choose Select All, then press the Delete key on your keyboard.
Then email the vCard you created earlier from your PowerBook to yourself. Open the email on your iPhone and tap the attachment to import the contacts to your iPhone, as well as to iCloud and your other devices.
* If you want, you can make a precautionary backup of the duplicated contacts as they are now before starting. To do this, open Contacts on your Mac Mini, select all contacts, export them as a vCard and save it on your desktop.

Tips For Improving Face Detection Accuracy

These are some rules I have slowly discovered that have helped improve the accuracy of iPhotos' face detection.
a. Don't force iPhoto to recognize *+every single+* instance of an individuals face. (If you need to create a location containing every instance of an individual, then you need to setup a Smart Folder using the persons' name as a Description or Keyword. "Faces" is not the section to do this. See a suggestion below for using "Faces" to do this.)
b. Avoid confirming really poor quality examples of a persons face (low light, pixelated, off in the distance, etc)
c. Avoid confirming only partially visible faces (hair covering half the face, head turned away to a profile, extreme angles too high or too low, etc)
d. Avoid too many instances in which the person's eyes are closed. (Obviously, sunglasses are a real problem here as well)
e. Avoid instances where the persons head is tilted 45 degrees or more, unless the software recognizes the face on it's own.
f. Avoid instances where the face has areas of heavy shadow, and the light source is at right angles to the face. (Outdoors with Sun directly overhead or near horizon.) If face is in an "even" shadow that seems to be OK.
g. Clearly, the more full frontal, clearly lit views of an individuals' face you can include, the better the face detection will be.
h. If you do use the "Add Missing Face" button, then restrict the selection box to just around the eyebrows, nose and mouth. Avoid selecting the whole head since the face detection software concentrates on the features in the center of the face. No need to include the hair as it does not appear to be a factor.
*Gathering Every Instance of a Persons' Face*
Here is how you could use "Faces" to gather every photo of an individual, yet maintain its' face detection accuracy. Mind you, this may only be practical with relatively small libraries, not libraries with 10's of thousands of photos.
1. First, go ahead and name *+every instance+* of an individuals' face (Even poor quality examples).
2. Then, within the "Faces" corkboard section, open that persons' album and "Select All" of their photos (Do this before the Faces scan is complete or you will also select all of the suggested faces under "So-and_So may also be in the photos below")
3. Next, create "New Album from selection..." and give it the name of the person. (Alternatively, you could "Batch Change..." all the selected photos with a "Description" using the persons' name and then use a "Smart Album" to gather all of the persons' photos. This could be handy for adding future photos of the person automatically to the Smart Album.)
4. Once that is complete, now "Reject" all poor quality, or partially visible examples of the persons' face within Faces. This will improve the software's future accuracy at detecting the persons' face in new photos added to the library.
If, at a future date, you add another large group of photos containing that persons' face, you can repeat steps 1 & 2 and simply drag all the photos to the persons' Album. Or "Batch Change..." the Description again to automatically include the newly added photos to the Smart Album you created earlier.
In the end I have discovered that the Faces section of iPhoto is really more a "tool" for creating Albums, rather than a destination for viewing photos.
Hope this helps. Feel free to add any suggestions you have discovered for improving the face detection accuracy.

Apparently you shouldn't worry too much about what you select for the face area when using "Add Missing Face"... From Apple's knowledgebase at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3427:
Note: Only faces that have been automatically detected in your photo library will help iPhoto match faces. Manually identified faces will not aid iPhoto's face-matching ability.
So, unless they later come out with an update that actually uses that data, any effort you make in selecting especially accurate face regions is going to waste. (Though I'll admit I'm still putting in the effort in the hope that the data will someday be used for something in a future version of iPhoto...)

Unify aperture and iphoto libraries: the book (tricky) issue

I had been in the process of migrating from iPhoto to Aperture for a while now.
I imported iPhoto library in Aperture few monthes ago and am now using only Aperture.
Everything is fine for two things:
- I could not import the books (format is not compatible), so i had to keep the iPhoto library
- I didn't want to duplicate the orignals , so they are still in iPhoto library
With Aperture 3.3, the library could be unified with iPhoto
I would like to move all originals to Aperture library and still be able to open from iPhoto (so far, easy) but also keep the iPhoto books (which as far as i know are still incompatible with aperture books formats)
In other words, i want one aperture library, including masters, and I want to be able to open it from iPhoto, and still keep the old books (that were built from the initial iPhoto library) in iPhoto
Any clue ?

You're really full of resources (not sure if this french expression translates well in english, but you get the idea) !
I finally found a way, not the most elegant one, but it's working:
0. Open each book in iPhoto. Delete in the book non-used photos of the book (in project list, choose book, then choose photos in the toolbar in the bottom, display non placed photos, delete). Now books projects only contain photos actually used in the book. (this step may not be necessary, but it speeds the process)
0. bis: Backup your Aperture library. don't forget to stop also any automatic backup process (like time machine)
1. Open the iPhoto library with Aperture (remember i had already migrated to Aperture 3,3 & iPhoto 9, which makes the libraries compatibles)
2. Export each of your books as a phototheque (right click on the book in the inspector navigator/ choose export impression project as a phototheque). Give specific name, for example "project x"
3. Open first created book phototheque in aperture
4. Tag photos of the phototheque with a specific keyword, for example "book x"
5. Close phototheque for "book x" and resume on step 3 for other phototheques
6. Open default aperture Library
7. Import first phototheque, merge with Aperture Library
8. Normally you get duplicates, especially if you have added metadata or edited the photos in aperture since you created the books in iPhoto. At least that's what happened to me
9. You can now grab the recent metadata on the one that was already in Aperture and apply it to the imported one. To do that, create a smart album with the keyword "project x"; then move all new imported events from iPhoto to the event where they belong in aperture. Then in the smart album, for a specific picture when you choose "display in the project" (i have defined a shortcut) you are in the event where the duplicate photo also sits. Choose cmd shift C on the photo with metadata, cmd shift V on the photo with the tag "project x" to transfer the metadata. You can delete the first one, except if you had edited the original differently in the book and in aperture and want to keep both. You still have to re-enter the faces on the imported one
10. You can erase the tag "project x"
11. Go back to step 7 for other books
12. Check you can see your books in iphoto when opening aperture library with iphoto. You can now consolidate the aperture library and migrate all referenced iPhoto pics inside the aperture library
13. you can erase iPhoto Library and other books phototheques created in step 2
You now have one unified library, that you can use in aperture and iPhoto, with your old iPhoto books in it.
(you also have lost a few hours...)

Infoset Creation in BI 7.0 with 2cubes , 1 DSO and a Master Data oBjects

I have a requirement:
To get the Work Order Activity from PM, and their corresponding Work Order numbers, Cost Centers and the Amounts associated from CO module like CCA and WBS6 datasources.
I thought about this solution:
Link the 0PM_C03 with the MD- 0PM_ORDER as a left outer join
and inner join 0PM_C03 with ZTXN_O01 - DSO(based on 0CCA9DSO) and Innerjoin to the ZWBS_C20 .
Is it ok to include 2 infocubes ,1 DSO and 1 MD object in an Infoset. Performance may be worst.. but i cannot think of any other solution.........
Multiprovider does not solve my purpose as it gives 2 records when you identify Work Order number in PM and CO modules. By using an Infoset we can link WO in PM to WO in CO.
Please guide me.....

Hi Bala,
Typically PM data sources are very high volume. Using InfoSets can lead to serious performance issues, as well as duplicates (especially for time dependant objects).
Have you tried using the Analysis Process Designer. There is some ways that you can filter data and have a better performance based on your selection criteria.

My Aperture Wish List for Apple

Hopefully someone on the Aperture development team will read this post at take away some useful information (if there is any here).
I am a long term user of Aperture (tested pre-release v1 and bought at release), have a significant investment of time in the product, and have been a vocal proponent of the product to many users that I can "influence". I purchased version 3.0 a few days after it became available after some quick testing with the demo version.
*First let me make a few comments*:
1. Generally I like the product, but as many with large pre-existing libraries (45K+ images - 260GB) have encountered performance is less than stellar, especially when Faces is enabled. On the other hand I LOVE the high-end photo editing functionality (curves, brush on/off effects, GPS integration, etc).
2. While using the program I have noticed that Aperture, and in particular, Faces makes apparently poor use of the multiple cores (4) in my new i7 iMac. Rarely do I see more than CPU usage even when doing what would seem to be really intensive things like Faces or even regenerating huge amounts of previews.
3. Meanwhile memory usage.... not sure any more needs to be said, but you guys will really need to get a hold on this quickly. I'm waiting from my upgrade to 8GB to arrive in the mail. Hopefully this will improve things significantly, but to be honest I'm not sure it should really be necessary to get decent performance.
4. Based on my experience with previous released of Aperture (1.0 and 2.0), I'm pretty sure that performance will significantly improve with the first major patch. I think this product is a diamond, but still in the rough.
*Specific requests*:
1. For users like me with BIG libraries that are well organized -- PLEASE, PLEASE allow the Face functionality to have much better integration with previously applied keywords and metadata. For instance I would like to be able to quickly search all of the images with unidentified faces (in the usual Face GUI) with certain keywords. So for instance, I could search for all of the images that are marked Betty or Joe in the un-ID'd faces and very quickly tag them. This would make it so much faster than doing it the current way where I might have over a thousand images of a particular person that have not been id'd, one at a time in a pretty much random order on one row of images. Likewise, it would be really nice to view all of the unidentified faces in one window and sort by, say to name one example, year.
2. Not sure if this is my particular GPS unit (a Garmin handheld), but elevation data is not included in the GPS data integrated in the the image EXIF. This would be VERY useful, especially for outdoor and nature photography. For instance for many of the faculty that I work with, the elevation info would provide an amazingly useful tool to analyze their photography - for instance the lat, long of a photo of a plant are great, but to be able to sort by elevation (a key component of ecosystem) would be fantastic.

I think Aperture 3 is a nice software. Apple have improved the DAM capabilities and localized adjustments are welcome.
However, I feel it still falls short on the RAW conversion part, specifically color correction and extraction of detail( compared to Capture 1).
I really want to like Aperture, but with todays high resolution cameras and higher demands from agencies, I just don´t want to compromise on the RAW conversion.

Font Smoothing GONE--Help!!!

I'm running 10.6.2, and I pretty much have ZERO font smoothing whenever I ctrl-mouse zoom on any menu, any text, any program. This is on my MacBook Pro (2 years old) that had perfect font smoothing in Leopard.
I've turned off the CRT checkbox in System Preferences—doesn't help
I've used Terminal to run defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 1 and also tried 2 and 3 and even reverting to defaults—doesn't help
I've used Font Book to validate fonts and remove duplicates (especially after Office 2004 install)—doesn't help
I've also rebooted after all these operations—still almost zilch smoothing on zoom
Even Finder looks AWFUL

That sounds good. A lot of tests to run! Hate to do the new user test, but will if I have to.
I am really leaning toward the Option-Command-"\" having (unintentionally) turned OFF Screen Zoom (under mouse or trackpad) Image Smoothing.
How could it take me so long to learn that there is Font Smoothing, and there is Image Smoothing. TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.
The Chain of Blame here is so convoluted it hurts my brain.
1. Evernote was trying to reinstall web clipping and/or its Safari plug-in ever since I converted to Snow Leopard. (Massive evidence of this in Console error messages, and they are hilarious: "Can't get Elephant!" and "Can't install icon!" over and over and over again. Just give it up, Evernote!)
2. So one day Evernote's interference with Safari messes up my executing the Option-Command-"\" command to log into my bank (it's normally a 1Password keyboard shortcut that works great in Safari).
3. Option-Command-"\" reverts back to its "normal" designation (turn on/off Screen Zoom (under mouse or trackpad) Image Smoothing).
4. I hit Option-Command-"\" repeatedly, trying to get the 1Password HUD to pop up in Safari. It doesn't.
5. By hitting Option-Command-"\" so many times, I unintentionally turn off Screen Zoom Image Smoothing. Only I don't realize it.
If this theory IS correct, then it's a simple fix!
The lesson learned would be:
System Preferences, Personal, Appearance, Font Smoothing
is a DIFFERENT preference from
System Preferences, Mouse/Trackpad, (Two Fingers), Screen Zoom, Options, Smooth Images
Of course, I'll report back just as soon as my SuperDuper backup finishes and I can try this test.
And if this IS the problem, well, I blame it on the elephant.

JSF, tiles, xml and xsl

Good days people, I am employed at an app that wants to integrate JSF, tiles, xml and xsl.
Basically the app receives information of the user's interfaz, builds an url with the above mentioned information and invokes to a service web that a xml returns with the information. The idea is to generate the exit in format html or wml with an insole(staff) xsl and to send the result in this format to every jsp that is going to form a part of the page that it will generate tiles. at first I understand that it is feasible, i�d like to know if someone already has done it and since it has done it.

Has anybody integrated an XSL parser with Forte. I know Forte provides us
with an XML parser but that does not help with parsing XSL. There a lot of
parsers written in JAVA but that will not integrate well with Forte. We
need something that will be easy to integrate with Forte. This parser will
take our XML and XSL to give us a result set. If anybody can comment on the
subject or share some information I would appreciate it.

Photos app did not open my iPhoto library

I searched the forums but didn't find an answer...
I recently upgraded to 10.10.3, looking forward to trying out the Photos app. My understanding is that on the first launch, Photos should open up the existing iPhoto library. However, I had my iPhoto library outside of the Home>Pictures folder. Additionally, while Yosemite was updating, one of my kids plugged in their iOS device, causing iPhoto to open when I previously had it closed. In any case, when Photos opened, I didn't get a dialogue to use my existing iPhoto library, and there was just a blank library. I went to Preferences, and there is an area that shows "Library location", but there is not a button for me to select the iPhoto library. The button just says, "Show in Finder", which brings me to the Finder.
Aside from manually dragging and importing several thousand photos over from iPhoto to Photos, is there a way for me to have Photos use the existing iPhoto library? Thanks for any help on this!

And that is good so. Importing a photo library would create a mess of duplicates - thumbnails, previews, faces ...
You do not import a library, you open it.
To switch between libraries hold down the alt/options key ⌥, while you double click the Photos icon to launch it. That will show the library chooser panel. Just like in iPhoto.
Select your iPhoto Library to open.
Once Photos has upgraded your library open the Photos Preferences and make the new library your System Photo Library. Only the System Photo Library can use iCloud and id visible in the Media Browser in other apps.
After upgrading the iPhoto Library, you will find it renamed with "migrated" in the filename extension. And about the same size as the new Photos library. Don't delete the old iPhoto Library, in case you need to repeat the migration, if their should be issues. First test it thoroughly.
The Photos Library is sharing the media files with your iPhoto Library using hard links. so no additional storage is required for the second library.
