Duplicates in iphoto from syncs gone wrong ( will this idea work to fix it?

Hello all, i have recently come back from a month of traveling the US in which i took about 2,000 photos on my iphone, so when i got back home i synced my iphone up to my imac, and during the sync process i launched iphoto and began importing the 2,000 photos. Well the first sync attempt froze, so i pulled the USB out of the phone and re-synced, and that froze, so i tried again this time successfuly importing the pics into iphoto, neatly organized by time-stamped events from 10/22/09-11/20/09. Anyway after the 3rd sync, i realized that the first 2 botched attempts actually imported some of the photos on each attempt but incorrectly time-stamping them to putting them into the July 09' event for some reason (first attempt), and creating a new event incorrectly time-stamped as the day of the import (2nd attempt). Anyway what this means is i have many duplicates and triplicates of most of those 2000 photos, its a mess.
So having said that, i should note that i have never deleted any photos out of my iphone, i have every single photo i have ever taken still in my iphone camera roll, 3,700 to be axact. I have since taken the time to hand select all the photos taken from that trip in iphoto and correcty moving them into the correct time stamped event created from the 3rd succesful import. Rather than carefully guessing which photo is an original and duplicate and risking deleting photos by accident, i had an idea that i hope will work given the fact that i still have all photos still in iphone camera roll, and wanted to get feedback on this before i actually tried doing it,,,,
,,,i was thinking that if i went into iphoto and deleted all the photos and events from right before i left for the trip until now, and then re-synced my iphone to my computer, would iphoto recognize all those photos from that time needed to be re-imported from the camera roll into iphoto again, this time organizing them into their correct dated events? I have a setting for the importing of photos, something about not showing or syncing any photos that have already been imported from camera roll, so by deleting those pics from iphoto, i was thinking that it would detect those photos to not be in iphoto and want to re-import them. So i am taking this extra pre-cautionary step of asking the help forum if this would work or not before just going ahead and doing it. I do not have a digital camera so all my photos in iphoto are from my iphones cameral roll. Thanks for reading this.
Stabb

ok, so i tried my idea, i went into iphoto and selected all the events that were from the dates corresponding to those photos, and moved them into iphoto trash. Then i synced my phone back up to itunes, and after the sync was complete, i checked in iphoto to see if it would recognize those pics would need to be re-imported back in from my camera roll, and they weren't there in the import window. So either iphoto was not detecting those to be imported because all the photos were still in iphoto even though they were in the trash bin, or iphoto won't detect photos for importing after they've already been imported once despite them being deleted from iphoto after the import. I have an external hard drive with time machine backing my computer up every few hours and i am still a bit nervous to just empty iphoto trash with all those photos in it, so i just restored all the events back into iphoto from the trash bin. I really felt like this should have worked. Can anyone confirm if iphoto does not detect photos for importing off iphone camera more than once if they've since been deleted out of iphoto?

iPad requires Wifi (or 3G /LTE) to connect to the Internet. You cannot connect a USB modem to the iPad.
You can create your own WiFi hotspot through your computer for your iPad to connect to, if your computer supports this functionality. All Wifi Macs and many Wifi PCs do. Check your computer manual for how to do it.

  • Will this idea work for recovering a hard drive? Please assist.

My parents Mac stopped working this week. Specifically their hard drive seems to be down. (Flashing ? on startup). They have a beige PowerMac G3 300MHz with an 8GB HD. The HD is formatted into two partitions. They run OS 9.2.2. They have done little if any preventative maintenance in the last 2 years.
What I have done so far:
    1) Booted from OS 9.2.2 CD
    2) Partition 1 (with the System Folder) does not mount. The
computer said it did not recognize the disk and asked if
I wanted to initialize it. I declined.
    3) Partition 2 (no System Folder) does mount. Files are
    visible.
    4) Ran Disk Utility on Partition 1. Disk Utility found
problems but was unable to correct them. Restarted and
    ejected 9.2.2 CD.
    5) Attempted to boot DiskWarrior 2.1.1 CD. Did not work -
perhaps the old machine has difficulty with burned
disks. It has been known to happen.
My Diagnosis: Since Partition 2 mounts, but Partition 1 does not, I guess that the directory on Partition 1 is corrupt, preventing the computer from finding the System Folder.
    Prescription: rebuild the directory.
Problem: how to rebuild the directory if DiskWarrior CD doesn't boot?
My Proposal: I have a slot loading iMac 500 G3(summer 2001, I believe). I also have a iMac 800 G4. My plan is to remove the ailing Hard Drive from their machine, and put it into the iMac 500 G3. I will then start the iMac 500 in Target Disk mode, and connect it to the iMac 800 via FireWire. I will then use DiskWarrior 4 on the iMac 800 to rebuild the directory of the drive in the iMac 500. Does this sound like a plausible plan? Please comment if you see any holes in my plot (ie - will DW 4 even work on a drive with only 9.2.2 and has never seen 10.x on it at all, or will it just mess it up more?). If you have any helpful suggestions or easier ways to do this, please let me know! Thanks.

I have one of the beige beauties, a 300 also. By today's standards they are a little slow in OSX, but in Os9 they really cook! One of the real beauties of these beige wonders is that they are so flexible. You can actually run two ATA/IDE drives on the same buss in a Slave/Master configuration and there is plenty of room, cabeling, and power connectors already installed for the job. If you have a spare 50 pin SCSI drive hanging around you can stuff that in also.
My suggestion would be to leave the iMacs out of the repair loop, get a spare drive (they are dirt-cheap on eBay), put OS9 on the spare, or even the 2nd partition of your present drive (you are still within the boot partition requirements of the 8GB drive in the 2nd partition), and do the repairs on the beige using its own drives.
The suggestion of getting a firewire enclosure is a good one. They really come in handy. Get a good enclosure, ie-pay some money for it. The cheap ones tend to loose their power supplies. The drawback is that the beige won't boot from it like it will from an internal IDE.
Unless there is information on the boot partition of the 8GB drive that they positively have to access, I'd abandon that drive and start over. It's just too much fussing and time spent otherwise, and Disk Warrior occasionally comes up short.

  • Will this idea work in an Apple Store?

I want to get a new imac but am concerned about the screen quality issues. If I bought one in the store either the 20 or 24in, I haven't decided yet, would I be allowed to open the box there in the store and check the screen? And if the screen was having a lighting or gradient problem would I be able to return the system right there on the spot and continue exchanging systems until I found one without a problem? I know apple has a return policy but I dont know the details and whether the screen problem would qualify for a return.
    Thanks

Absolutely! That's also the only to way to avoid getting stuck with dead pixels. I'll never make another major purchase from an Apple store without a pre-acceptance inspection.

If I delete iCloud from iPhone 4 phone will this delete everything from my new upgraded iphone 5 ?

No. You can delete your iCloud account from your iPhone 4  and the information will remain in iCloud either through syncing or through a backup.or through both features.  Just make sure you have a recent backup.

I got factory unlocked iphone5s A1530 model from india with warranty... Now i shifting to regina canada so will this phone work in canada with canadian sim card...with Canadian operators permanently...

Remember though, that although you have warranty on this phone, it is only valid in India and NOT Canada, because you purchased the phone in India and iPhone warranty is country specific, so if you have problems with the phone, then you'll need to take it back to India to get it fixed.
If you will be in Canada for any length of time, then buy a new phone in Canada.  It will be guaranteed to work then and you will also have warranty cover.

Language change is no problem, you can switch to anything in the tech specs.

my birthday events for only some of my contacts are showing up twice in my iPhone. They are not showing up twice tho on my iMac. No, I do not have duplicate names in my address book either. Any idea how to fix that?

I have uploaded the InDesign file so that you can take a closer look at:
    http://www.hsdesign.comuf.com/downloads/
    The file is called "Template_File.indd"
So, as discussed the main issues are:
    1) The TOC doesn't generate all the listings (only those with the applied paragraph style "Heading 1 - Appendix")
    2) When I try to create a new pargraph style and apply it to existing or new text, it reads the pargraph style in the Paragraph Style menu, but the style doesn't actually apply.
Hopefully you can figure something out from this. I really appreciate your help.
    Thanks!

Can I connect my iPad mini to a data projector using a lightning to 30-pin adapter connected to a 30-pin to VGA connector? Or will this only work with a lightning to VGA connector?

The lightning to 30 pin adapter does not support video as per the item description in the Apple online store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD823ZM/A/lightning-to-30-pin-adapter
This adapter lets you connect devices with a Lightning connector to many of your 30-pin accessories.* Supports analog audio output, USB audio, as well as syncing and charging. Video output not supported.
You will need to the Lightning to VGA adapter directly
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD825ZM/A/lightning-to-vga-adapter?fnode=3a
Or the Lightning Digital AV Adapter

If the projector supports HDMI input.

  • Will this drive work in firewire?

I have a 80GB Western WD00BB-OOJKCO drive as my backup. If I upgrade to the new iMac will I be able to use this drive as a firewire and upload all my applications back onto my new iMac? I presently do my backup with Carbon Copy Cloner as a bootable backup.
I know I would have to purchase a firewire case for the drive, but will this drive work in a firewire case?
    Thanks

Don't see why not assuming you have all the files required by your applications fully backed up. Some applications install data outside of the Applications folder. Some record serial numbers into invisible files. If all the data are not properly transferred then you may need to reinstall some applications.
    If you are moving from a PPC to an Intel Mac, then I suggest reading the following;
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode or copying the critical contents to CD and DVD or an external hard drive will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.
Basically the instructions you should follow are:
    1. Backup your data first. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    2. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    3. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    4. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
    4. Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (* This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ copy any preferences needed for third-party applications
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to another forum user for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

I currently have a MacBook Pro running on Mac OS X 10.5.8 and I would like to update to 10.6 or above. Will this update work for my computer or is there other software I need to download first?

You need to install Mac OS X 10.6 from a DVD first. The online Apple Store sells them.

  • Will this battery work for my laptop?

I have a laptop from like 2009. It's going to crap and I recently got a new one, but it still runs, albeit slowly on startup and everything, and I think it's because of the battery, as it says "Consider Replacing Battery" and when I unplug the charger it just shuts off, and it only charges to 51%. So what I want to know is will this battery work for my laptop? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007W1QBO4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AF7ENLFPN87DK
The battery right now says "Replace with HP Spare 593550-001 and says 2010/10. This battery says 593553-01, but it looks almost identical to my current battery. So will this get the job done?

    Hi,
What is the model of your computer ? (HP 2000 is a series, not a model). Please check the compatible list:
       http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?SearchText=593553-001
By the way, slow booting up may not due to weak/faulty battery. Can it boot faster using AC ?
    Regards.
