Duplicates in iTunes Lib

Hi, I have a fairly large song collection (>120Gb) kept in the iTune lib (iTunes lib on the primary c drive). The song files are kept in a external disc drive (windows pc). Somehow, I must have imported my CDs into the iTune lib more than once. I now have dups listed in the iTunes lib. I only have one copy of the song on my disc drive. I can manually delete the dup song from iTune lib and answer the subsequent question to keep the file (I answer yes).

You can't, deleting duplicates using iTunes alone is a manual process. Did you create the duplicates today or recently on a particular date you know? Right click at the top of any column in your library and from the list choose Date Added. Click at the top of the column and sort it to bring the latest dates to the top. If you did it today all your duplicates should have today's date. Select all the tracks with today's date and delete them. If they were done on a particular date then delete the entries for that date. You could also have a look at Teridon's iTunes Scripts, Robert has a script in there for dealing with duplicates which might be of some help: Teridon's iTunes for Windows Scripts

Cannot add itunes lib to remote app on iPad

When trying to add an itunes lib using the Remote app on my iPad (2) a Passcode is displayed and the ipad2 appears under the Devices list in iTunes; entering the code there does not connect... checked all setups. Any ideas why this does not work?

I too have this problem and made it worse. Under Mavericks and iOS7 everything set up very easily and worked beautifully like Apple stuff usually does. Then a couple of weeks ago I took the dive and updated to Yosemite, iTunes 12 and iOS8 and then I would occasionally lose connection with my iTunes library as described by the second poster. Very aggravating. So I made a bigger mistake and deleted the library from my iPad Remote app and whenever I started it up again it would say 'Add a device'. I clicked and a randomly generated 4 digit number appears with the exact instructions: 'To add an iTunes library, open iTunes on your computer and choose Remote from the tab bar'. I went to iTunes and searched EVERYWHERE for this Remote tab bar and could not find it. I then went to iTunes Preferences: Devices and clicked the button 'Forget All Remotes' thinking this may reset something in iTunes and make the Remote tab appear somehow to start from scratch. Wrong! Now there is absolutely no connection between the Remote app on my devices and iTunes on my computer.
Can anyone point me to this Remote tab in iTunes?? If I can find that then I think I should be able to fix this.

How to move iTunes lib from external HD (used to be internal HD)?

I hit an internal HD failure and didn't have iTunes or iPhoto backed up. Not fun, but no one to blame but me.
I've had Apple replace the HD (320GB for Intel iMac), but I'm back at square one. I put the old HD in an external USB enclosure and can see the file system. Glimmer of hope!! For starters, I've copied as much as possible to a NAS box, but I get errors with some files.
Here's the question(s).
What's the best way to migrate the iTunes content from the external HD to the new internal drive?
Here some details that may help:
- I can see the "Music" folder on the old HD (4.5G, 2000 items)
- I can also see "Library/iTunes" (450 MB, 19 items)
- all music/content was setup for 1 user account
- content is:
imported CD's
about a hundred or so songs purchased from iTunes store
misc podcasts (no need to recover)
playlists, etc.
I would think the best thing would be to:
1) fireup iTunes somehow to open the music on the external HD
2) save/export all the music
3) close iTunes, then re-open iTunes on the internal HD (currently with empty iTunes lib)
4) import the library from step #2
5) verify everything is ok
6) reformat external drive & recycle it
Even if it is possible, the steps above may fail if I hit a drive error. In that case, I'm guessing some sort of file based restoration may be needed.
Any clues on what to do and in what order are appreciated.
No need for extensive details on the instructions (but it is certainly appreciated). Once I know what to do (and in what order), I can search the support site for detailed instructions on the individual tasks.
I'll probably use better protection once I've got this back together. Time machine is a leading candidate.

You create the playlist on the other computer which may require moving or copying of the media from the first computer to the second computer.

Has anyone found a way to automatically delete Exact Duplicates from iTunes 11. As I read the instructions, it can only be done by comparing the songs with the same title, making sure that it is the same album, etc. Then I have been going through the duplicates and pressing CTRL in Windows to select the next duplicate song to delete. I have a very large library and this is going to take hours.
I guess I didn't get the instructions correctly when I backed up my Library to move from an old laptop to a new one. I am going to have to go back and read those again because this brand new HP is having problems like the past few that I have received from HP. I will never recommend an HP Product, I can tell you that.

When deduping use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks. If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin. Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)

Duplicates in iTunes Music Folder but not in iTunes

If this has been addressed already, please forgive me, but in my User>Music>iTunes Music Folder each of over 6000 songs has a duplicate.
They don't show up as duplicates in iTunes or under Show Duplicates.
Is there anyway I can get rid of the 6000+ extra tunes other than clicking on each duplicate and dragging it to the trash?

I started over by trashing everything in my User > iTunes file and relaunched iTunes.
Then I went to iTunes Menu > File > Add to Library where I re-imported all of my tunes into iTunes from by backup file on my external hard drive.
I then Consolidated the library (whatever that means); now, I'm back in business.

I just noticed that all of the m4a music files stored in my iTunes music folder have duplicates. This does not seem to be the case for mp3 files. These are not duplicates in iTunes--when I show duplicates in iTunes, I don't have any, even though the files are all listed twice on my hard drive. Why did this happen?

You probably added the files to the iTunes library with the copy to iTunes library location.
This will leave the originals where they were and then make a copy in the iTunes library.

The show duplicates/show exact duplicates features have been left out of iTunes 11.0. Rumor suggests they will be restored in the next build. In the meantime I have written two Windows scripts to make playlists of Duplicates and Exact Duplicates, either from a selection of tracks or the entire library. Note that, as with the iTunes feature, this list makes no distinction between "originals" and "dupes", you have to decide which is which.
There is also my DeDuper script for automatically removing duplicate copies but keeping one remaining copy of each set. This can preserve ratings, play counts, playlist membership, etc. which are lost in a manual clean up. Please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping. See this thread for background on deduping and the script.
If you want to manually remove duplicate tracks use shift-delete to remove selected tracks from the library as well as the playlist. Keep one of each repeated group of files and don't send the others to the recycle bin unless you are sure that there are multiple files on the disc as opposed to multiple entries to the same file. Until then you will have to resort to sorting by a particular label such as artist and manually scanning, third party utilities such as Dougscripts Dupin to deal with duplicates, or revert back to iTunes 10.7.

You will need a Windows PC with iTunes running and a working copy of Windows Media Player available on the machine. (iTunes calls WMP for the conversion from WMA). Then just drag the WMA file(s) into the iTunes Music window.
iTunes will detect it and give you the dialog shown below, to which you choose "Convert." iTunes will create a new version in the format/bitrate set in your Import preferences (MP3 in my example below), and immediately add it to your iTunes library.
The WMA original will be left in place, so you can delete it if you have no other need for it.

Right-click on this direct link to ExactDuplicates and "download" or "save link as..." to a location of your choice. Double-click to the file to run it. You should get something a bit like this:
If your system will allow it my script will produce a progress bar so you can see what is going on, otherwise you will have to be patient, it will carry on working in the background.
After scanning for duplicates it then adds them to a new playlist. For large libraries this process can be quite slow. (Very slow if you also have old hardware like me.)
Finally you'll get a results window like this (from a different test run, as I didn't have time for the full one to finish when I was grabbing screenshots).
You can use shift-delete to remove selected tracks from the library as well as the playlist. Leave at least one track behind from each repeated group and don't send anything to the recycle bin unless you are sure you have more than one physical copy.
The DeDuper script has several advantages over cleaning by hand. Automating the process allows preservation & amalgamation of ratings, play counts, playlist membership, etc. See this thread for more detail.

Digital PDF's Not Appearing in iTunes Lib

The title pretty much says it all. Had restored my iTunes music files to a new computer along with all the music and any digital PDF booklets that I had. Trust me the PDF booklets are successfully imported on my new pc but for some reason I am having a devil of a time getting them to show up in the iTunes lib. I purchased a new album that had it's own digital booklet and THAT booklet HAS shown up in my lib but for some reason the rest of my digital booklets just won't. Even when I go to the folder in which they are stored and double click on them. They open but I thought that maybe doing so would automatically add them to my iTunes lib but this is not the case. They ARE on my hardrive, and they DO open up easy enough. Thing is for whatever reason known but to God himself they will NOT appear in my lib. Does anyone have ANY clue as to what I should do?

PDF files don't carry a tag so if you reimport them all you get is a title. In fact now that iTunes supports PDFs for iBooks they might even default to being categorised as Books (if so, change the Media Kind to Music) otherwise they're likely to be hiding down in the Unknown Artist/Unknown Album section. The iTunes "form" for digital booklet names is *Digital Booklet - <Album>* so if you type "Digital Booklet" in the search box all should be revealed. You need to edit the properties for each one with its Album, Artist & Album Artist so that it can then appear listed with the album it belongs too.

The instructions here are still basically the same, but the command has been moved to the View menu now and relabled "Show Duplicate Items". There are also third-party utilities that can provide more functionality, such as Dupin:
