Duplicates in lightroom

duplicates in lightroom

Just imported photos into lightroom and found many duplicates. is there an easy way to get rid of duplicates?
I am looking for an automation method of doing this.
Imac 24, 2gigs ram, 750mb h.d., 2.8Ghz intel processor using Photoshop Lightroom 1.31

I just had to restore from a failed Buffalo RAID unit, and was a bit shocked to find that, when I reimported with 'remove suspected duplicates', it hardly worked at all, and I wound up with all the 'missing' entries still there, and duplicates of most everything.
So I tried 'locate' for a missing one, thinking find other missing nearby. Fails, because it won't allow two images with the same name (although there are two), and won't look for others.
I expect better tools from Adobe in Lightroom. I'm using Mac, and as a pro photographer, this will lead me to see if Aperture from Apple is smarter.
Adobe should provide smart search capabilities to help us weed out duplicates. What is there now is not very helpful.

  • Removing Duplicates in LightRoom

When I migrated from iPhoto to LightRoom I wound up with many hundreds, if not thousands of duplicte images.
I purchased the "Duplicate Finder" plug-in, which indeed finds the duplicates, but ther eis no way to simply delete them. I would imagine many users have been through this at some point and hope there is a relatively simple way to get my catalog under control.
    Thanks,
    Henry

You'll need to decide which are the ones you want to keep.  If you're asking whether you can delete from the Smart Collection, without first finding them in the folders, then yes you can.  You can use the splat-delete (Cmd-Shift-Opt-Delete or Ctrl-Shift-Alt-Delete) to delete directly, but be warned it skips all warning dialogs.

  • Duplicate Folders Lightroom 1.1

I just downloaded and installed Lightroom 1.1. I am seeing duplicate subfolders under the main folder. I organize by year/date. I am seeing many duplicate subfolders with zero pictures. Some folders have 1 or more pictures. I don't understand or see reason for this. Of course there are not duplicates on the disk.

I got a message on dpreview form:
From Jeff Schewe (LR Development Team), 10:44 EST today:
" Guys...not to rain on your parade but what you got was a test stage that has now been yanked (or will be). The final release isn't for a few days yet. It's also not real clear if what you downloaded WILL be the final build (only somebody in LR QE can say for sure). But you all pretty much jumped the gun. Yes, it was a screwup by Adobe IT...(not that that's all that unusual). But what you got isn't "official" until Tom Hogarty says it's official...ya know"
I don't suggest installing Lightroom 1.1 until official release. I also hope Adobe recognizes the was unintentional and supports me to move forward with the offical release.

There's a Duplicat Finder PlugIn, which is supposed to support you in doing so (I have no experience with it myself).

  • Why do I get duplicates in lightroom upon import?

I am getting duplicates in LR even though I don't have any in my orignal files? I am importing from a library on my hard drive. Not everything duplicates itself but at least a third. These are JPEGs, I am using Creative Cloud on a PC running WIndows 7 ultimate.

Are you using Import >> Copy
For images already in a folder on your hard drive use:

  • I am considering upgrading to lightroom 5. But first can I talk to someone to fix a major issue. My catalogue has disappeared and a new one without my chosen images has taken its place.I need to retrieve my original duplicate/ changed images?

    Hi there,
I am considering up grading to lightroom 5. But first I need to be sure I can retrieve my original library, which has been replaced by images from iphoto I hadn't slected. I currently use a lightroom 3 and have spent countless hours as a professional photographer improving my original photographs. Can I speak to someone regarding this matter?
I would really appreciate your help in resolving this matter asap.
    Kind reagards

    Morning Geoff,
Hope you slept well. I have been busy looking into many of the things you
    have told me.
Where should I start so much info.
There are 7 Ircat folders. Some empty some contain approx 7000 images. Some
of the images /altered on lightroom are here few maybe 50. Although they
are missing or offline and now in the CR2 format ( photoshop elements),
which is very strange. I think this an issue as to why it may have all
gone, changed? In another Ircat folder many images are in the condition I
left them although not all of them, the latest 2013 are missing. Also in
another extension Ircat folder many of the images are there I imagine the
same 7000 but cant be seen?
On my hard drive there is a folder I cannot open, it reads in progress and
says no App to open document, search App store for Application. Perhaps
this is the key, I also have little storage space on my hard drive.
Many images under 2012 on hard drive have the tiff image, with altered
version created on lightroom some now show as CR2 version to view the photo
photoshop elements opens up automatically, which I never use. I do feel
this is a major reason/ issue?
Also under certain folders with dates my images appear pixelated or blurry.
Under another heading the jpg version is great approx 73 some are missing
the latest and most important, unfortunately I want in Tiff.
Under another folder on hard drive I have many of the images I am chasing
approx 60 but the size is a concern 2-2.5mb, should be around 40mb?
In another folder all are in CR2 photoshop elements.
Time Machine, which I'm sure was inactive tells me it could not back up
    disk?
Under thumbnails it looked promising all in DNG many missing and in CR2
    format.
I thought I would let you know in case I haven't already that the memory on
the imac is very low, hence why I began trashing/ deleting images yesterday
thet are saved on my hard drive this is when all this mess occured.
Are there short cuts I can use to remove images that are duplicates without
    lightroom becoming tempermental?
Were too next? I am hoping the originals can be found and installed in
    their original form.
I really appreciate all of your help and time, please help me
    Cheers mate

  • How to not create Lightroom duplicate when editing in Photoshop

When I choose to Edit in Photoshop from within Lightroom 3, the edited copy is added to Lightroom. This might sometimes be useful, but I want to choose whether or not the edited copy is added to lightroom.
How can I make this choice?
    David

That's not my experience - maybe I've got some setting wrong somewhere.
I have two categories of images in Lightroom: DNG files originating from digital camera Raw files, and files which are PSD that were scanned from old photos.
Opening the DNG files in Photoshop then selecting "Save As" does not make the duplicate in Lightroom PROVIDED I have "As a copy" checked. But then the copy is not the file that's currently open so I have go find the copy and open it to do any work on it.
Opening PSD files from Lightroom in Photoshop, the duplicate is created immediately the file opens in Photoshop unless I select the "Edit original" option. But even then, if I subsequently use Save As within Photoshop, the copy appears in Lightroom.
My version of Lighrtoom is 3.4.1
My version of Photoshop is CS5.1
I'm on a Mac running Snow Leopard

  • Duplicate finder in Lightroom

Is there any easy way to find duplicates in Lightroom that really works?  Also, my pictures in LIghtroom were identified with the typical Lightroom file extension which in my case was the date etc.  Somehow I did something that coased the market to change to show the make of my particular camera.  Anyway to change that back and what did I do to cause this to happen?

As to the duplicates....I had 3 computers fail back to back.  I backup files every couple of days but on one of the computers files were corrupted and we had to just do a basic data dump so when files were restored a file was created that just contained pictures, no longer attaced to specific folders or even sorted by date.  Then in subsequent failures the files were restored off of the external hard drive.  This created a picture library that now containes over 20,000 pictures.  Most of those are dulpicates, triplicates and in some cases quads.  I have been slowly sorting through this mess and just wonder if there is any easier way do get through the pictures.  Does it make sense to clean up the library in File Explorer and then let the sorted pictures populate Lightroom?  Is any of this making any sense to you?  I am so disgusted right now that I am ready to wipe out the every picture that exsists on this computer and start over by loading every XD and SD card I have saved.  No, I do not reuse my cards specifically due thanks to computer company that provided me with computer that failed all in a timeframe of less than 6 months.
2nd issue- When you are in Lightroom and you have your pictures dislpayed on the screen in Library mode....under each picture Lightroom would assign the date, in my case under the picture would be 20130320-20130320-IMG_3090.jpg but now what is showing under each picture is Canon Powershot SX20IS.  I am sure this is a setting or filter but I am still very new to Lightroom and don't know what I did.

  • Why can't Lightroom import or even recognize images have been (saved as) in photoshop

Lightroom 5 dosn't read photos saved as tiff or jpeg from photoshop cc when importing???

  • I have duplicate images on an external HD (Mac)

I wish to remove the duplicate images and re-import the non-duplicates into Lightroom 5 but still keep the present collections with the approporiate images.  How?

Yes, it is LR in English.  I know why emails have been confusing.  I have tried to simplify the problems below:
For example, a lot of my files are “missing” because I mistakenly formatted the HD that had them.
    For example:
    Previous location: /Volumes/Internal 2TB/Master Photos/PHOTO TO BACK UP/DIGITAL PHOTOS/Sterling 60th birthday/284_8414.jpg
Luckily, I have backed up these files to an external HD where I can locate them (which is time consuming).  Plus, there are duplicates of the same image files on this external HD.
    For example:
The files on the HD that I mistakenly formatted can probably be mostly recovered using recovery software such as.  But again, this is time consuming and the recovered image files may not have the metadata used by the LR catalogue.
So, what to do? Should I first, cull out the duplicates (bmp above shows essentially six images of 284_8414.jpg) and then tell LR that the correct master folder is in Lacie instead of /Volumes/Internal 2TB/Master Photos/PHOTO TO BACK UP/DIGITAL PHOTOS/Sterling 60th birthday?

  • Avoiding duplicaterd photos

    Hi to all ...
When I'm importing photos from disk and rename them simultaneously, having selected " don't re import suspected duplicates ", does Lightroom takes in to account their original file name or the rename one ?
    Ever ?
    Lots of thanks in advance,
    Miguel Garcia

It looks at the capture time and the original filename I believe. Renaming during import doesn't matter. It should still not import duplicates.

  • JPEG + Raw Seperated during Import

    Hi!
I'm just starting out with Lightroom and ran into a problem.  Something makes me think it might be a bug, but not sure so I thought I'd ask.  When I imported files (did the copy) into LR, I created a folder structure based upon Year\Date\<original filename>.  These folders contain JPG + raw files (NEF).  Initially, I had a setting wrong on my camera that just started the filenames at 0 when I deleted all the pics from the card.  So, basically, I have dsc_0001.jpg, dsc_0001.jpg, and then another set of duplicates for the next day.
When I imported it into Lightroom, it worked fine because of the folder structure.  However, I started reading that using dates for pictures isn't the greatest thing.  OK, so, I deleted everything and re-imported based on events.  So, I did...
    Event\<filename>
This worked well until I ran into my duplicates.  Lightroom adds a -2, -3, etc to the find of the file name.  So heres a snapshot of the directory...

Now in Lightroom, it will show the duplicate JPG and NEF files because of the rename.  The "Treat jpeg files next to raw files as seperate photos" is not checked, but I think Lightroom is getting confused after the rename.  If I do a regular folder structure of "Year\Date" so it doesn't rename the files, everything works as expected.
I even tried to rename the file (in Lightroom) with the date-sequence number, but had the same results.
Is there a trick to get it to import both files, but treat them as a single photo after the rename because of a duplicate filename?

If you are talking about including capture date in folder and/or filename, I think it's a pretty great thing.

This is just my opinion, but I've found photo life to be a whole lot simpler by making sure all filenames in catalog are unique. It's not a requirement, but you're encountering one of those occasions when you'd not have the problem if filenaming convention assured uniqueness.
So, consider a filenaming convention like:
    {date-time}_{camera-id}_{camera-file-number}.{ext}
I realize this makes for long filenames (and I've been trying to lobby Adobe for the support needed for shorter (shortest) unique filenaming which also assures alphabetic order same as date-time order, but so far to no avail), but has the advantages:
    * alphabetic order same as date-time order.
    * all filenames are unique
    * "sequence number" associates image to original in-camera number, in case that should come in handy.
    * it's informative.
    * you never have to change naming when exporting (although you can if you want).
    * you can determine which source photo based on exported filename alone.
    I do:
    {date}_{photographer-id}_{time}_{camera-id}_{camera-file-number}.{ext}
So things are naturally organized how I want upon export or when viewing in OS..., even when multiple photographers shoot with multiple cameras.
Anyway, "Events" may be best handled as collections and/or collection sets (and/or keywords...) instead of folders, which would be another way to solve your problem.
PS - If you're more of a minimalist, consider shortest unique naming convention (if tip needed, do tell...).

  • How do I prevent Lightroom from creating duplicates if the edit in photoshop is not saved?

    Hello!
How do I prevent Lightroom from creating duplicates if the edit in photoshop is not saved?
So... Quite often I choose to 'Edit in photoshop' from Lightroom but then end up not saving the result. (for example, because I just wanted to experiment with the photo, or I'm not satisfied with the results)
However, Lightroom always creates a copy of the original photo, which stays in the catalog even if the photoshop changes aren't saved.
Is there a way to stop this, and only add a photo if it has been edited in PS?
    Using LR5 with PS CS6 on a Mac 10.9
    THANK YOU!

Select 'Open the Image in PS as a Smart Object'. The image will be rendered by ACR in memory without being written to disc until you save it from within PS.
