Duplicates in LR 4 library

LR 4
geneerating multiple duplicates in library-8-10 dups of exact same photos that  I have not accessed at all in recent past.Over whelming my hard drive!!  Rendering LR useless. 1.5 TB HD nearly full-started with +/- 300 GB

Rob:
Thanks for your speedy reply!
I “think" you are right.  But since I work with LR infrequently and don’t know the processes that well, I’ve been reluctant to try something, fearing I may make matters worse.
Apparently I did not assign dates to these photos when importing them.  I thought that step was “automatic” or at least “unavoidable” in earlier versions of LR.  Maybe not!  Maybe I skipped a step.
Anyhow, my thought, like yours, is to step through the "un-folderized photos, putting each group into folders and assign dates.  That might get them where I can find them chronologically in the Library?    But I’m not sure how to do that.  Can you explain that for me?
BTW, my photos are primarily from trips so dates will not be hard to establish!

Not a good idea! The "show duplicates" feature shows "all" duplicate tracks, but you only want to delete the "extra" copies, not the "originals".
I've written a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates. See this  thread for background, including how to delete the extra tracks manually if you prefer.

Under the file tab in iTunes, select Display Duplicates. From there you can delete them as well.

    Thanks!

I just ran a test with iPhoto Library Manager, Duplicate Annihilator, iPhoto Duplicate Cleaner, Duplifinder and Photodedupo.  I imported a folder of 5 photos into a test library 3 times, allowing iPhoto to import duplicates.  I then ran the 5 photos thru resizer to reduce their jpeg compression but all other aspects of the file the same.
None of the duplicate removal apps found set that was reduced in the file resizer. That's probably due to the fact that the file creation date was being used as a criteria and the resized photo would have a different file creation date even though the Image Capture date was the same.
They all found the 3 regular duplicates and some of them would mark two and leave the 3rd unmarked.  iPhoto Duplicate Cleaner can sort the found duplicates by file size but if the file was edited to get the reduced file size it might not be found as it would have a different file creation/modification date.
iPhoto Library Manage was able to find all duplicates and mark them as such if the file names were the same the the filename option was selected.  Otherwise it also missed the modified, resized version.  It allowed one to select the one photo to save before going to work on the library.
So if a photo has been reduced in image quality or pixel size it will not be considered a duplicate.

  • Getting rid of duplicates in SoundTrack Pro library

    Hello
I recently installed STP 2 over my previously installed STP, and have a problem with duplicate files in the library. The previous installation was lacking files, so I decided to installed all files again.
How should I proceed to weed out the duplicates? Should I try to fins duplicates by using some utility (recommendations?), or should I delete all files and reinstall install the sound files from the DVDs?
I presume I need to reindex again in both cases?
Also, were are the directories I need to work with located? (Previous STP directiories for library sound files and new ones?)
    Cheers

Hmm, no reactions to my posting. But I may have the answer myself.
The Index file seems to have been corrupted. I tried to reindex the Apple Loops directory, but this did not help.
I the took out the directory from the indexing list, and added the Apple Loops for Sound Track Pro, where the problems seemed to be. I then reindexed.
Now I got back a lot of files. I was previously not aware of that files were missing. The duplicates seems to have been a misunderstanding on my part. Files in the Sound Track Pro browser and in the Finder now seems to match up.
The solution seems to have been to force STP to reindex the problematic sub directory.

  • I have a lot of duplicate photographs in my library. how can i delete the duplicates automatically?

I have a lot of duplicate photographs in my iPhoto library. It happened while our EIS were saving a computer breakdown, but now i would like to know how to selectively delete the duplicates, without doing it individually. That is, can I set up iPhoto to automatically search for and delete duplicate photographs in the library?

How do I quickly delete duplicate tracks in itune library?
I have many duplicate tracks because I uploaded 5 cds twice.
I upload cds to my itune library.
I then made changes to the song names and added coverflow.
So how do I back up these albums to my hard drive or external drive so if I loose it or want to upload these albums to another computer?
    thank you for your help...

Just go to view > show duplicates and delete accordingly. As for backing stuff up, read this:

How to delete duplicate pictures from Photo Library in iPhone 3G 16 giga?

The only way to delete photos from the photo library is by the same way the photos were transferred to your iPhone - via the iTunes sync process.
Are you saying a photo or all photos transferred to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process are duplicated in your iPhone's Photo Library without being duplicated in the folder on your computer where these photos are stored?

    Hi, Abril_Perez17.
This may be related to a new feature embedded in iOS7 that shows all purchased music by default.  Go to Settings > Music, then turn off Show All Music.  See if the issue ceases once the feature has been disabled.  This information is located on page 63 of the user guide below.

If you are on Version 11.0.1 rather than 11 Apple put it back in
    View > Show Duplicates
Option + View > Show Exact Duplicates
so if you are on 11 upgrade to 11.0.1 and you will have it

  • Why do duplicate albums appear on my iPod Classic screen when there are no duplicates in my iTunes Library?

Why do duplicate albums appear on my i{Pod Classic screen when there are no duplicates in my iTunes Library?

It's probably going to be a capitalisation error. In other words, one or more tracks on the album has a lower case letter at the beginning of the album name while all the others have a capital letter. They can be difficult to spot.
In iTunes, examine one of your duplicated albums carefully. You should be looking for a slight difference between the album title name. Look at the screenshot below, can you see the error in the album title?
    It is there...
The title track (Left Of The Middle). Look at the capitalisation of the album name.
Once you find you error in your album, re-type it (or copy-and-paste from one track to all the tracks) and then SYnc your iPod to iTunes. Does that cure it? If nto, let us know.

  • Why do songs keep duplicating in my Library. One song has duplicated five times. If  I delete the unwanted duplicates will it delete the song entirely from my library? How do I get the four unwanted duplicates out of my library?

Why do songs keep duplicating in my library. One song has duplicated five times. I have many that have duplicated up to 3 times. How do I get the duplicates  out of the library without removing the song completely?

As above, Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • 55GB of Duplicates in a 155BG Library... best resolution?

I seem to have 55GB of duplicates (via iTunes>View>Show all Duplicates) in my iTunes Library of 155G - I am wondering what would be the best resolution to fix this problem besides cherry picking every other file within that list that is indeed a duplicate and then having to verify select and "move to trash"
Also I am wondering if someone can clarify for as to how iTunes is treating the various files when I select:
    • file>add to library
    • file>import
    • drag file to source>music
    • drag file to iTunes application
and how does the "copy music to iTunes music folder" preference fits into this (besides the obvious)
I keep my entire library on an external drive, where I move any content that I may have collected while not attached to that drive each time I plug in.
I seem to also have a good deal of !-!missing files! notations -songs that are located just fine within the correct music folder when I spotlight them. Any ideas?
Thanks for your input in advance!

Various options - a good place to start would be here:

I haven't tried any of Doug's scripts personally but think a lot of users use them. Plus he explains some of the technical info you are looking for. I ended up going for Tidy Up! software to find duplicate files:http://www.hyperbolicsoftware.com/TidyUp.html
It's a pretty comprehensive general app, although not 100% foolproof because (as Doug says on his site), 'duplicate' can mean a number of things.
