Duplicates of duplicates HELP!

A friend of mine asked me to help with their itunes library... I am stunned... there's about 5,000 songs worth of duplicates in their library and simply viewing duplicates and deleting them by hand is far too long to do. Is there any way to eliminate the songs from the itunes library folder or a faster way to delete the duplicates? A lot of these songs have about a total of 3-4 duplicates for one song. Any tricks anyone has up their sleeves to make this an easier process?

I have a somewhat similar problem. I even have a song that I just bought a few weeks ago in iTunes that how has a duplicate - how could that be? I only downloaded it once!
If you have a song in your library that you put into more than one playlist, does it get added to the library for each playlist it's in? And if you delete the duplicates in the library, will the songs be gone from some of the playlists you put them in? And if you delete them from all but one playlist, will the duplicates be gone?
I don't like the idea of having 2 or more copies of all my songs if there's no need for it, but I do have many songs that I have in more than one playlist. Is that what causes it?

  • Duplicate help menu options?

Hey guys, I just wondered if any of you saw duplicate "Help" menu options for some programs. I have this issue with iWork, iWeb, and several other non-Apple programs. Usually the second Help option has a choice to bring up the program's help documentation, but when you click that option, it doesn't work. Does anyone know how to remove the extraneous menus? Thanks!

    Aanidaani,
Have you tried the procedures outlined in Troubleshooting Help Viewer by Dr. Smoke?
Additionally, OnyX has a Reset Help function:"Mac OS Help: This command restore library of the application and deletes certain files that might cause problems when you want to show the Mac OS Help. To find again the Help of an application in the Mac OS Help Library, you must relaunch the Help, at least one time, from this application."

  • "edit in external editor" results in unwanted duplicates - help!

I've been using iPhoto for years. I've also frequently edited my iPhoto photos in Adobe Photoshop Elements and simply saved the edited photos. No duplicates. The original version could still be returned to (just as if I'd edited in iPhoto).
Ever since I upgraded to the latest version of Adobe Photoshop Elements, v. 10, every time I go to the external editor, iPhoto (or Photoshop?) creates a DUPLICATE photo when I save the edited file.
    Any wisdom?
I'll also check with Adobe, but I know I'll get quicker - and better - advice here in Apple Discussions.
    Thanks.

Just in case this was the issue, while wating for a reply from you & others, I did exactly that...hoping they listen to feedback on this issue and act on it soon.
(I'm one of those disenchanted Apple customers who is skeptical that anyone's listening...witness the death of Mobileme and my beloved Gallery and the endless, long discussions on this subject on this website.)
Thanks for the reply, Terence. I suppose it's always good to know the problem isn't me, it's Them.

  • So many duplicates help?

I have thousands of files that i have made duplicates for back up
they are spread across many drives. So I took all the photos on all my drives and combined them into one folder with many sub-folders. My plan is to eliminate all the duplicates from this folder on a single drive. Than I plan to start fresh and import into aperture. A few questions I tried using tidy up
however it doesn't seem to catch all the duplicates. Once I get everything cleaned up do you suggest letting apreture handle my files or do it manually. I am afraid if I use aperture and the main file gets corrupt I will be screwed. Should I add meta data before importing or import everything and than add the data? Or should i load everthing into iphoto first. What a mess I have over 60,000 files.

In terms of legacy Aperture, I think not. It's important to Apple, just more important to us seemingly in terms of RAW support. But I don't see Apple walking away from it.
Even if they did, it is easy to select whole groups of images and export either the original masters (untouched) or the edited versions.
If you hold the original masters in folders on disk and "reference" them from Aperture, then migrating the masters to any other app. is simple. Getting the edited versions to another app., whether managed or referenced is by export version (after selecting the version(s) in the Aperture browser) to a folder on disk. Again simple.
That's the images and edited versions. The camera info. is held in the image file so that's OK.
The really challenging "stuff" is the edit information (+.5 exposure, +.2 Sat, -.1 contrast etc.) and metadata. The edit commands are proprietary to Aperture's engine so are unusable elsewhere. The metadata can be exported. I've never done this but I believe it goes out in XML sidecar files. However, the program you read it into may understand it or not. As I note, probably challenging.
As for Vault, if managed library, it backs up all masters, versions and previews - but not thumbnails to save on space. If referenced, it backs up versions and previews only .... you have to backup the referenced masters yourself.
Deleting dups. is rather simple but tedious. They'll sort together if they are from camera on image date. Then simply <Cmd>-Click on the dups. (I do a page or so at a time) and then delete.

  • Remove duplicate help

I have a Table with no dups on customer_id (as primary key) and some that have a single dup, meaning 2 rows maximum, here is an example of the data:
I want to flatten the dups rows to one row based on this rule:
    customer_id      EMAIL_1                        EMAIL_2
    12345            [email protected]      N/A
12345                  N/A                      [email protected] want it to be:
    12345 [email protected] [email protected]
    removing the N/A
all the duplicates are like that and in no other way, I am not sure how to do this, I tried a mix of len and max() but that did not work.
    Thanks!

If customer_id is a vARCHAR2, then you might have two rows whose customer_ids are hard to tell apart, e.g. '12345' (5 characters) and '12345 ' (6 characters, including a space at the end).
Whenever you have a problem, please post CREATE TABLE (including PRIMARY KEY constraint) and INSERT statements for a little sample data, and the results you want from that data.
Always say which version of Oracle you're using.

    SELECT       customer_id

    ,       MIN (NULLIF (email_2, 'N/A'))     AS email_2

  • Duplicate help

Some How in Trying to merge the I Tunes from 3 Computers i ended up with 4000 Duplicates. Is there any way to erase all the extra copies and leave one copy in the library? My other Problem is when i Downloaded i Tunes it found the music that was on my computer and lists it but wont play it. It shows a little and cant find the original file. is there a way to locate multiple files at once, as in all of them, or do i have to do it song by song?
    Thanks Cat

There is a duplicate removal script here:
    http://mysite.verizon.net/teridon/itunesscripts/
It may or may not work for you, duplicates are determined by exact file/path name.
There is also a script for removing not_found tracks.
But you can also do this with a playlist if your library is not too large.
Using a playlist to collect dead tracks.
Create new regular playlist – Playlist1
Select whole library and drag to Playlist1
Create new Smart Playlist with the rule: Playlist is not Playlist1
Live updating checked – after you run it, uncheck live updating or you may not be able to delete tracks.
This playlist should contain all the dead tracks
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5696793#5696793
It is a good idea to backup your music and library files before experimenting.
The library files are iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml in the iTunes folder.

  • Multiple duplicate calendars

Hey - can anyone help! I’m going crazy here!
I have a G5, and iPhone and an iPad and I’ve been all day trying to sort out a syncing problem. I followed all the Knowledgebase articles, and even chatted to an Apple MobileMe expert - so now I need to turn to the Apple community for help!
When MobileMe (MM from here on) syncs with iPad and iPhone I get six copies of each calendar, although iCal on my Mac only has one of each.
I’ve tried deleting all the calendars, trashing caches and pref files, deleting and reinstating MM accounts on the iPad.
Address Book however sync’s fine - all devices show the same data. So why is calendars showing six copies of the same info?
    It’s driving me nuts!
    Thanx, Andy

Didn't have the duplicate Help menu problem, but in case this helps, here's what worked for me:
1- In the MobileMe preference panel, switch off Synchronize with MobileMe (in the Sync tab) and Sign Out of MobileMe account (Account tab).
2- Restore ~/Library/Calendars folder from Time Machine to the state it was in just prior to installing Snow Leopard.
3- In iCal, delete the duplicate calendars, leaving only the 'correct' one. (Determining which one to keep can be tricky: in my case I deleted the incomplete 'duplicate' calendars, where some appointment entries were missing).
4- In the MobileMe preference panel, sign back into to MobileMe (Account tab) and switch Synchronize with MobileMe: Automatically (in the Sync tab) back on.
5- In the Sync tab of the MobileMe preference panel, click Advanced… at the bottom right. In the resulting sheet, select any existing entry of your newly upgraded Mac's name and click Stop Syncing Computer…, and confirm that you wish to Unregister. (This clears out the old baggage.)
6- Then click Reset Sync Data… bottom left of the sheet, then select Replace: Calendars. The direction of replacement is important: choose to overwrite MobileMe with your computer.
That's how it worked for me. All seems to work nicely now. Note that in the last step, it seems counter-intuitive to me to overwrite a nice, clean MobileMe calendar with the slightly dubious copy, rescued from duplicates, on my Mac. But I could not get the overwrite to work from MobileMe to my Mac. I had to sync from my Mac to MobileMe.
Hope this helps someone… I'm sure there's a cleaner, more elegant way to resolve this problem, but there you go

  • Need help to acheive Duplicate Contacts detector

    Hi All,
I need to develop a feature in which my app would detect all the duplicate contacts of the user. A user can have many contacts. App shall find all his contacts which match on the basis of email, name and mobile number.
I am quite confused as what can be the logic here? Where should I do this work? Should I do it in a stored procedure or will something work in Java. I am using Hibernate as the ORM tool. Can I use some of the features of hibernate for this problem?
If I go by simple algorithm then I would probably have to make n database requests where n is the number of contacts.
Any help will be highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Nitin

You can certainly do it in a stored proc.
Unless you are going to do it a lot then it doesn't matter.
Although "many" might come into play there. 10 is nothing. 100,000 is.

If you want to suppress duplicate values in some of your results columns
I am using toad 9.1 using Oracle 10g version 2

    Hi,
You can use the BREAK command to suppress duplicate values.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14357/ch12009.htm#SQPUG030
    (scroll down for an example)
It's a 'SQL*Plus-ism', not sure if TOAD's capable to handle it.
    Simple example:
    HR%xe> break on department_name
    HR%xe> select l.department_name
      2  ,        e.last_name
      3  ,        e.first_name

      5  ,        employees e

  • Help! Duplicate devices on iPhone with iMessage's Continuity

Hi! After a clean install of Yosemite  on my MacBook Pro (15“ early 2011) my iPhone 4S (iOS 8.1) shows 7 different devices called "Macbook Pro of Niccoló" in Settings - Messages, without the ability to erase the duplicates. I'm used to do a clean install since Leopard. I have also an iPad Mini 2 which is correctly displayed on my iPhone. This is driving me crazy, please someone can help me? Thanks.

In my case this happened when I first set up to synch my contacts with Exchange, at this point it asked if I wanted to keep the contacts on my phone, when I said Yes I ended up with two entries for most people on the All Contacts group listing on my phone, the solution was to use one addressbook or the other.
I suggest you have a look at the Groups page of your Contacts app, as that will list the addressbooks you are currently using and help you diagnose the problem.
Note: If you use Google for email and sync with Google contacts using the Exchange GAL it will show Google's record of which contacts you have EVER used in email among the suggestions that pop up when addressing a mail, even though they are not stored locally in your contacts list.
Hope some of the above helps you, or someone working with a similar problem

  • Restoring iPhoto contents from an external hard drive results in duplicates! Please help!

    Hi Folks,
I have an iMac 2.8Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo computer that had it's DVD fried and I gave it to Apple to fix it. They did and they also upgraded me to the Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4. I am not sure if I am a fan of this OS but that's a different story. I had backed up everything to an external hardrive (not using time Machine). The external drive is a Hitachi and came with it's own back-up software for the Mac. I was able to restore everything except iPhoto properly. By the time I specified the directory that contained my library information, I ended up getting duplicates events/pictures of EVERYTHING to the point where it has eaten up more than 100GB of my 350GB hard-drive
Now I have been looking through all of the duplicate events that iPhoto created, I see that most of them are thumbnails. I also downloaded photosweeper Lite to find duplicate pictures and that didn't help. I am a Unix hack and could write some sort of script to compare the fine names etc but I know that's not a practice that's encouraged and I really don't have the time to putz with it.
So can you please let me know how can I re-restore iPhoto properly please given what was in the back-up hardware? Here is what the directory structure looks like in the external drive:
    Hitachi Restore/Users/mrghoo/Pictures/iPhoto Library

Sorry to hear of your difficulties.
Simply copy the iPhoto Library Folder from the back up to the Pictures Folder on the MBP and launch iPhoto. It will do the rest.
Alternatively, you can leave the library where it is and hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the Library on the Back Up disk.
