Duplicates of my songs

I have duplicates of my songs and they are grayed out, they can not be deleted. What do I do?

I assume your duplicate songs are on either your iPod Touch or iPhone, not on your computer.  I had a similar problem and found this thread and posting by Kerrod helpful in another thread linked here:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/17543444#17543444
Here's his post:
There are a few posts on this with varying views on what causes it what what the solution is.
The problem is caused by having your iPhone set to automatically download purchased music content to this device when made on other devices. If you look at Settings>Store on your iphone, you will probably find that the "Music" option is switched to 'On".
You can turn this off and the problem will no longer occur, but it will not fix the existing duplicates on the iphone.
If you do turn it off, then music will not automatically download to that device when purchased on another device. It will have to get to that device via a sync. I prefer to leave it switched on as I like the feature.
How to fix the existing duplicates on your iPhone:
- Select the Music option from your iPhone
- Delete all of the duplicated songs off the iPhone. To do this, either:
     - (if it is separate songs that are deleted and you want to delete them one by one) select the Songs option from the bottom of the screen; individually select the song to delete by swiping left across the song; a "delete" option should appear; tap "delete"; the song should disappear, or
     - (if it is an entire album that is deleted) select the Albums option from the bottom of the screen; select the album to delete by swiping left across the album; a "delete" option should appear; tap "delete"; the album should disappear
     - At this point the songs have been deleted from your iphone: both the "original" and "duplicate" versions.
     - sync the iPhone with iTunes, ensuring that the appropriate setting are in place to sync music from iTunes to the iPhone
     - the sync should put the songs back onto your iPhone, once only.
     - Check the music library on the iPhone and the songs/albums should have re-appeared but now they are there once only
     - Problem solved.
However, a problem with this that I cannot solve is that this will need to be repeated every time an album is purchased from iTunes (which is messy).
- I could turn off the automatic download feature on the iPhone, but I like this feature.
- Alternatively,  I could alter the settings for music sync-ing in iTunes that will mean that music never syncs from iTunes to my iPhone and will rely solely on the automatic download feature - however, there are times when I import a CD into iTunes and want it on my iPhone: This requires a sync of the music.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what a permanent solution for this is?

  • Duplicates of a song on iPhone 4s but not in iTunes. Unable to delete duplicate. Won't play and won't let you swipe to delete. Any ideas on how to do so without resetting the phone?

I have duplicates of a song on an album. One of the duplicates is grey with no album cover. When you attempt to swite and delete, the track will not delete and will not even play. I've contacted iTunes store and the person I received the support email from told me that it may not be downloaded. I emailed him back and explained that no there is no download for that song in my itunes store on my phone.
One I never received an answer back which shows you how well these people do their job.
Two: I really would prefer to have a solution to this problem without having to delete all of my music from my phone or resetting my phone. Because this duplicate isn't even showing up in my iTunes, it's only showing up on my phone.
When I attempt to find it in my itunes it plays fine. But when I try to find the file to delete it, it is no where to be found. I've tried everything that I could think of to get rid of it. And I don't want to leave the album/artist off my phone because I do enjoy their music... And I have the microsoft sync in my car.
Anyone got any ideas on how to do this without resetting the phone and/or taking my music off?

If you have all your music on the cmputer then i would connect up my phone uncheck the Sync Music option and apply.
This should take all the music off your phone .Then you can resync the music back on to it.
If this doesn't work maybe a restore to factory settings and start from scratch is the way to go

  • I dragged my ext. HD iTunes backed up folder into my new mac. Now there are duplicates of every song!! The problem is both versions seem to actually BE there when I check the info. Now I have no idea if iTunes is playing the files in the trash or not

Hi. I'm in a situation here and would really welcome some guidance. I dragged my ext. HD iTunes backed up folder into my new mac. Now there are duplicates of every song. Both versions seem to actually BE there when I check the info. So, I moved what I thought were duplicates into the trash from iTunes, and resigned myself to the fact that I would have to do this manually for each album. I did this with about 10 albums. I emptied the trash and lost them even though they still LOOKED like they were in iTunes. I repeated the process tonight on a bunch of other albums not realizing yet that I had screwed up terribly the first time. This time I saw what had happened and pulled the files out of the trash, onto my desktop and dragged them back into iTunes, then deleted the duplicate files that had exclamation points next to them. Now I have no idea if iTunes is playing duplicate files from the trash or not, and am nervous about emptying the trash. Anyone dealt with this before? Thank you

I would like to show my available songs that I could download if I want, however the ones I've already downloaded to my computer are showing up still, which results in duplicates of everything (one on my computer, one in the cloud)

    No.
Are the photos in an iTunes backup? If so then:

  • How to delete multiple duplicates of multiple songs?

How to delete multiple duplicates of multiple songs from my library at the same time, rather than each individually?

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See thisthread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning
to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

I need to edit out parts of a song to cut it down to two minutes for my daughter's talent show. I went to info/start time and it will cut down one part but only one part. I need to put three parts together. I tried adding duplicates of the song to the list but if If I change the start time on one it will change it on all of them.

In your library, right-click the song you want to edit.
    select "get info".
go to "options" and select the start and stop times for your first section of the song.
    click "OK".
Find the shortened version of the song in your library. It may take a minute for it to show up. right click it again and select "create (????) version". (the ???? is different for different formats).
The library will spit out a new, second version of the song which you can rename. I suggest you use the original title and add a 1 to the end.
Now you can go back to the other version and repeat the process with a different  start/stop time.
Once you are done editing, you can burn all of your versions to a disk, just make sure your interval time is zero so there are no gaps between edits.
To keep the orginal song on your library, just go back to the original and put the start/stop times back to the original settings.

Trying to load music on a new IPod.  Have discovered that My ITunes Library has a duplicate of every song.  Makes it very difficult to transfer albums.

Why do all songs I purchase from I Tones show up as duplicates in my Song Liabary?  One has a cloud and one doesn't.

Did you possibly do the update for new itunes software ? That may be the culprit. To get rid of the entry with cloud,go to Preferences.Go to Store.UNCHECK show itunes in cloud purchases.Click OK..This does not delete, merely hides.Good luck.

when I import my itunes library it duplicates all my songs . How ca I stop or fix this ?

What do you mean bye exported the library?
There is nothing to export or import.
The correct process to backup the iTunes library would be to copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the computer to the external drive.

Is there any reason why you keep creating new threads about the same subject?
If you stick to one thread, perhaps you may find a solution. ed2345 is the fourth person to offer help, and yet you respond each time by creating a new thread instead of explaining (in the first thread) why the previous solution hasn't worked for you.
But why exactly are you concerned about the genre anyway? A song can be in as many playlists as you wish, it has nothing to do with genre, unless you are creating Smart Playlists that use Genre as a rule of the list. If so, you have already been offered two solutions:
create a second copy of the song and edit that second copy to the second Genre.
use Grouping to cause the only copy of the song to be added to two separate Playlists.
By the way, creating new threads and thereby ignoring those who have offered help in existing threads is impolite.

  • After adding folders to iTunes library, now have duplicates of each song

I store all my music on a separate drive, M:\
I have a specific file structure setup that has worked for me for years, M:\Artist\Album
I recently received an iPod for my birthday, and started using iTunes. After adding my music drive (M:\) for inclusion into the library (without "keep..." and "copy..." selected, as to keep my current file structure intact), when selecting "File->Display Duplicates" just about every song in the library has a duplicate, one in the original folder "M:\Artist\Album", and another in "M:\Playlists\..\Artist\Album". I understand that basically somehow iTunes glitched and started in the "M:\Playlist" directory when adding to the library at some point, however I am at a loss as to how. In my actual folders I only have 1 copy of each song, so basically iTunes is making a symbolic link to each song and adding it into the library as a separate song.
I have over 9000 (must...resist...meme...) songs in my library, and removing and restoring takes quite a while. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to do this at least once now, but any ideas as to why or advice on how to avoid this particular problem in the future?
I am pretty set in my ways of my current file structure, since I don't use iTunes as my primary media software, so I would prefer to not have to resort to succumbing to just letting iTunes handle everything the way it wants (I pretty much hate that).
Thank you for any suggestions you may have.
EDIT: Is there a way to have iTunes rename/move files when adding to its library to specific folders via custom rules based on ID3 information (i.e. WMP rip settings)?
    Message was edited by: kaziekama

If you have "Keep..." and "Copy..." unchecked, iTunes will simply reference the existing file, and will not change your file structure, as you correctly note.
I'm fairly sure that some other program is operating on your files. The "Playlists" folder that you mention has nothing to do with iTunes. On my PC, only Windows Media and Roxio use it.
To your question +"Is there a way to have iTunes rename/move files when adding to its library to specific folders via custom rules based on ID3 information (i.e. WMP rip settings)?"+ the answer is no. When iTunes rips a CD, it names the files as track number and title, with no option to do differently. And as far as placing the ripped files, they go in Artist/Album, with no option to do differently. As full-featured ripping programs go, iTunes is not even in the race.
