Duplicates of Pics in iPhoto

Am in the process of establishing all of my iPhoto pics on an external HD. The problem is over the years I have managed to make 1-4 duplicates of most of my pictures. I noticed when I searched on spotlight, went from 2700 pics on iPhoto to 11900(!), Now some of the .jpg files are associated with program graphics etc but not a significant amount. Any idea on how to delete these w/out having to manually take out the dupes? There is no duplicate functionality like iTunes and there also seems to a ton of alias files as well. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
AJ

How are you seeing these "duplicates" - in the iPhoto program or in the finder? iPhoto will have at least two versions of each photo and may have three - 1 - an original - 2 - a thumbnail and possibly 3 - a modified version - these are not duplicates but are different versions each with its own specific purpose - you should never delete or modify the contents of your iPhoto library using the finder
If you have imported or created duplicated using iPhoto and see them in the iPhoto program duplicate annihilator - http://www.brattoo.com/propaganda/ - is the best way to find and delete them

I am making a calendar in iPhoto, picking photos from a folder, let's call it "2011 Pics," in iPhoto. After arranging all the photos and captions I decided I wanted to insert a new photo -- one that was not in "2011 Pics." So I inserted it into the folder, but the picture does not show up on the scrolling menu of pictures at the left of the calendar-making page. This happened last year and in frustration I started all over again. But surely there is a way to add a new picture to a calendar that is already laid out.

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • I attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded, now computer freezes after trying to load everything.  possible to reverse this?  options?  restore hd from time machine?  pls help!!!

long story short...i attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded to my desktop and now my computer freezes up after trying to load everything, and i'm not able to just drag the photos into the folder.  is it possible to reverse this?  what are my options?  restore hd from time machine?
a further question to restoring my hd from a previous backup on time machine...it says it will erase the hd.  does it actually erase everything or does it just erase anything that may have been added or downloaded since that backup?  this is confusing to me.
another problem which is part of the original problem is it seems that when i connect my iphone to my computer and iphoto uploads my pics...it doesn't just upload new ones, it duplicates and uploads every picture again...which is why i have 45,000 pics...they are 40,000 duplicates!  what's up with that?
I have a macbook pro, and recently updated the os to Yosemite.  the iphoto app is out of date, but i'll worry about that once i can figure out how to get all those pics off the desktop.  also, i recently purchased and installed 8g of new ram, but that hasn't seemed to help.
    any advice would be appreciated!
    thanks!!

    thanks for replying.
the booting and walking away and then attempting to browse and clean method is what i've been trying to do.  it won't let me drag and drop and just freezes up and goes to sleep after 2 minutes.  it's a never ending battle with very few results. which is why i questioned the method of just restoring the hd from a time machine backup.
do you think restoring the hd from time machine will resolve the issue with all pics on the desktop?  and everything will be as it was from the date i restore it from?  sorry, as you can tell, i'm not overly computer savvy.
i have a really old desktop mac...i can try connecting the two...how does one boot a mac in 'target mode'?
as for the iphoto cleaning and organizing issue...that is what i was trying to accomplish with importing them to a folder.  was going to browse and clean from there...but somehow imported to desktop which is what's complicating everything.  once i get them off the desktop i can work on the iphoto issue...which as i mentioned...i didn't take 45,000 pics...i've just taken about 4,500 over the last few years, and they are being duplicated in iphoto.  this was my attempt to clean it out entirely and start over.  it will basically be a lot of deleting.
one problem, seems to lead me to more...which is just my luck.  :-)
    thanks again, for your help.

  • Copying pics from iphoto says can't copy, photo is busy????

Sometimes when I try to copy photos from iphoto to my external hard drive, it comes up with the message 'cannot copy to this location because one or more of the pictures is busy' what does this mean and how can I change it? It happens quite randomly and if I delete the pic or change the name of the pic i'm trying to copy, it will choose another pic to be busy.....what am I doing wrong? it's infuriating. WHat's more, there is nothing about it in David Pogues 'missing manual'. Am I the only one at a loss when it comes to finding solutions to problems that seem so simple?????

*It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss. There is no need for you to ever enter this folder. There are no user serviceable parts there. Period.*
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
is there a simple way to make the pictures in my finder>pictures>iphotolibrary corresponde with the pics in iphoto?
No. The Finder is a File Organiser, iPhoto is a photo organiser. The point is that you let iPhoto look after the files and you organise, edit, whatever in the iPhoto Window - without reference to the files.
To delete pics from iPhoto and the HD, put them in the iPhoto trash and empty it, that's all.
i don't want to have multiple duplicates of the same image
You don't, you have different versions - as detailed above. There is no way to stop iphoto from preserving your original file. If you don't want this use another application.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Again, stay out of the iPhoto Library in the Finder, and remember everything you need to do can be done via the iPhoto Window - and if you can't figure out how to achieve something, post here or even check the Help.

  • Duplicates when importing from iPhoto

When i imported pics from iphoto got a lot of duplicates  Why does this happen and how can I prevent it?

Using both Organizer and iPhoto will create duplicates on your hard drive. You need to stick to one app for managing your photos although you can set up the Elements Editor as your external editing tool in iPhoto preferences.

  • Please help me! I imported my pics to iphoto but I can't open them now. I can't see them on full Screen/edit them like before. All I get is a exclamation mark when I double click on them. I don't have copies, can someone please help me?

I imported all my pics to Iphoto and I can't open/edit them now. When I double click on them, I only get an exclamation mark. Please help me I don't have copies. I tried burning them to a cd but it didn't work. Can someone please help me?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • How can I print multiple copies of the same photo onto one sheet of paper?  Do I have to Duplicate the photo in iPhoto and then select them all?

How can I print multiple copies of the same photo onto one sheet of paper?  Do I have to Duplicate the photo in iPhoto and then select them all?

no - you simply have to select the option to print mucliples of a photo on a page
select the photo and go to the file menu ==> print - select the printer, paper size and print size and click customize - in the tool bar click on the settings icon (the gear looking thingy) and select "multiple of the same photo per page" and the preview will reflect this option showing a full page of the selected size photos

  • How to export pics from iPhoto without losing info such as ratings, names etc

    Hi,
I'm trying to export lots of pictures from my iPhoto library to my mother's. I've got the two computers lined up next to eachother, filesharing on, using the "export" option in my iphoto to export the pics to a shared folder, then importing them into my mother's iPhoto.
But whatever I seem to do, all the relevant additional information attached to the photos gets lost on the way:
    - they arrive with today's date instead of their real dates
    - all the "names" information is lost
    - the ratings I'd given them are lost
Is there any way to preserve this information? It seems ridiculous if I have to again trawl through 100s of pics on my mother's computer to reinsert that data for each picture.
A second, less important question: when I export the pics from iPhoto (setting on jpeg) I have to choose size and jpeg quality - I'm sure these options are great if I wanted to reduce the size or quality, but I just want to export them exactly as they are in my iPhoto. If I choose high quality the exported file ends up smaller than the file in my iphoto, if I choose maximum quality it ends up twice as big. Any idea which settings just leave the size and quality as is?
    Many thanks for your help.

The easiest way to move files/albums/events plus all versions and metadata between Libraries is with
    iPhoto Library Manager
    You're running into a Catch-22.
The setting for leaving the file at the size and quality it is is to export the Original file. In the Export dialogue it's in the Kind dropdown.
When you export using the File ->Export dialogue you can write some of the info to the file on the way out: Titles and Descriptions (which also gets Keywords). You can't write ratings information because this is not standard metadata. A workaround: use a keyword: '5', '4' etc.
The catch is that this info is not in the Original file. So, if you export as anythign other than Original you have to choose a size and quality. If you export the Original you don't get the metadata - because that's not in the original.
Hence my suggestion of Library Manager.

  • How do i find duplicate photos in my iPhoto library?

How do i find duplicate photos in my iPhoto library?

These applications will identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find duplicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) -  this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but there are only twp apps that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates:  PhotoSweeper and Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

  • After upgrading to OS X Snow Leopard, I cannot view my pics in iPhoto

I upgraded my iMac with OS X Snow Leopard early last year (2010). Ever since the upgrade, a lot of my pics in iPhoto cannot be seen, but I still get a dotted border of where the pics are when viewing. All I get is a gray image with a triangle & exclamation mark in the middle of the triangle. I can see thumbnails of the pics, but when I click on the selected image, it comes up as a blank. Make sense? Can someone help me please?
    Thanks

i am sorry - i did do  all of that. But I am hitting a brick wall. The closing comment after I did so said install complete and followed up by saying :
You may have installed Mac OS X software that is older than your current version of Mac OS X, and may not work properly. To ensure the best experience please download and install the latest version of the Mac OS X Combo update from http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/ . You should do this even if you currently have the latest Mac OS X update installed.
BUT when I check to see what version of QT I have it says 10 (not 7) even though I clicked on 7. I think I need to uninstall everything and start again. Sadly, i dont even know how to do that!

  • Moving and Organizing Pics in iPhoto 6

I have an older MacBook Pro (2006), running 10.4.11 and iPhoto 6. My hard drive is getting low on space and I'd like to transfer some of my 30 gigs of pics to a 300 gig portable external hd. I'd love to keep the last year or two on my laptop so I don't have to take the external wherever I go. I've had problems in the past with moving pics to an alternate folder in order to find certain pics faster. iPhoto would not be able to find the pic and I would get a grey box with a question mark in place of the image. I'm hoping to not have this problem with 10 gigs worth of pics if I move them to an external. Also, if anyone can tell me the method to rebuild my iPhoto library and get those missing pics, I would appreciate it. The genius bar told me once, something about right clicking the app icon on my dashboard. I can't remember exactly. I'm obviously not a huge tech guy, so please go easy on me. Thanks for any help I can get.

The iPhoto library is a relational database and has no user serviceable parts - if you have mucked around in it your choices are to put it back - return things to exactly the way they were - load a backup or start over
You can move the entire library as a single entity and you can use iPhoto library manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - to mover photos between different libraries - you can not use the finder to move photos around

  • Pics in iPhoto Disappeared after renaming iPhoto Library File in Finder

    Friends,
I was working on my parents computer in an effort to help them organize their files, etc.
They have iPhoto 6 and I renamed the iPhoto Library folder in Finder. Obviously this is not a good idea since now there is no content (pictures) in iPhoto.
This action made a new folder (with the new name) in Finder's 'pictures' section. So, I tried to copy and paste (or maybe I dragged it, cant recall) the contents of the newly named folder back under the 'iphoto library' folder however, that did not make the photos reappear in iPhoto.
After moving (I think I highlighted & dragged) the file contents of the newly named folder back in the 'iPhoto Library' folder, I deleted the newly named/created file.
It appears as though the images are still in the original & modified folders however, no pics in iPhoto.
And, the irony of the entire action is that I was renaming the 'iPhoto Library' folder to 'iPhoto Library - Do Not Touch' so my parents would not mess with the content as they have done in the past. Apparently, I am the one who needs to stay away.
    Thanks a bunch!

Thanks Badunit, and yes, you are correct about not having the newly named library to choose when holding down the Option key while opening iPhoto.....b/c I drug the contents back under the original iPhoto library folder and then deleted the newly name folder.
The individual pics seem to be in the modified & originals folder but I do not know how to get them back into iPhoto. Importing one by one doesnt seem like the correct option.
I attempted to rebuild the iPhoto library but that resulted in nothing happening when I choose that option.
I know there is a solution but I dont know the smartest next step. I have read related discussions that almost provide a solution.
Currently, I need to figure out a way to:
    1) get what seems to still exist in the modified & original folders back into iPhoto even if it means loosing albums, keywords. I am hoping this route doesnt wipe out dates that the images were taken. If there is a way to get them back into iPhoto this route, I need instructions.
    or,
    2) I have a back up of the entire HD on an external HD. Would it be best to somehow use that to replace what I have on the computer HD? I do not know how to do this so for sure need guidance.
Help! I need to get this fixed today (i.e. father is getting an iPad for retirement at a big reception and I need the computer in working order to make it all happen so he has pics on the iPad to display at the event). I think I may have to page TD or Old Toad....
    Thanks friends!!
