Duplicating a DVD

I have a "universal disk format" DVD. It opens and plays fine using the "DVD Player" app. on this computer. It plays fine on both my Blue Ray disk players and HDTVs.
I've used both the finder 'duplicate' and Disk Utility 'disk image' methods to try to duplicate this DVD.
I end up opening to: AUDIO TS and VIDEO TS icons. Opening the VIDEO TS icon yields 3 movie files (among other stuff) which, when opened, shows parts of the DVD in poor quality. What gives?
Would appreciate any help, and a method to duplicate this DVD.

Duplicate a CD or DVD
1. Insert the DVD/CD;
2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;
5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.

    I am unable to copy a CD for some reason. If I right click on the CD icon and select "Copy", the machine does nothing. If I select "Duplicate", it gives me the following error - "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error code - 8058).
    What is up with this? Why am I unable to copy or duplicate?

    Hi Jim.
    You wrote: " If I select "Duplicate", it gives me the following error - "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error code - 8058)."This is a Finder bug. The same problem will occur if you attempt this with a mounted disk image or other mounted volumes.
    See "Mac OS X 10.4: Error -8058, unable to eject when trying to copy a disc in Finder," which also contains a link to the instructions you need for duplicating a CD or DVD.
    If you select a disc (CD or DVD) or a mounted disk image on the desktop, then attempt to duplicate the selected object using either:
    - Finder > File > Duplicate
    - The Duplicate choice in the contextual menu of the selected object's icon on the desktop.
    Then the problem you reported occurs. If you select the same object in the Sidebar or in Finder > Computer, Duplicate is unavailable by either of the above methods.
    The bug is that Duplicate should be unavailable if the selected object (disc, mounted volume, mounted disk image) is on the desktop.
    One can duplicate an unmounted disk image using Duplicate in its contextual menu, since that is seen by the OS as simply a file.
    To eject a disc or mounted disk image after attempting to Duplicate it, one has to eject it using Disk Utility.
    Good luck!

  • Problems duplicating a DVD

    Wondering if anyone can offer any suggestions on how to duplicate a DVD we just had made from some old family films. The transfer company assures me that the discs they make are protected in any way yet not of the methods I've tried are working. Just so it's clear, this is not a commercial movie DVD, it contains our own home movies.
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Duplicating burned dvd's? any programs?

    i have a ton of dvds burned on dvd-r's and i need a program to copy them. i tried using "burn" but you need an image file to mount and i dont know how to do that. any other programs out there that would work?

    The above answers are correct: Disk Utility can duplicate non-protected DVDs. Note that the process is a bit more complex than the above:
    * Insert the DVD to duplicate
    * In Disk Utility, highlight the DVD
    * click "New Image"
    * Name your disk image and save it
    * Importantly, choose "DVD/CD Master" in the image format pulldown
    * choose encryption: none
    * Create the DVD image.
    Then, just select the DVD image in the utility, and select "Burn." Insert a blank DVD and it will duplicate it.

  • Duplicating Leopard DVD

    I don't know if this is the right discussion group to post this in, but here goes...
    If I wish to make a copy of Leopard (as with all software, I usually either make a disc image or a copy, so I can keep the originals as untouched as possible), do I need to have a specific Mac? I realize that I will need a dual-layer burner. But I'm not knowledgeable about the dual-layer formats (-R and +R). What DVD 'type' is Leopard on? Or does it even matter?
    The iMac I have is the last G5 model, if that helps.

    Hey Slussier,
    It doesn't really matter what kind of DVD/CD/Whatever burner you have. You need to make a copy of the information on the Leopard disc, not necessarily the disc itself.
    That being said, figure out how large the information on the disc is and then you can start to explore your options . . .if it's small enough to fit on a single layer DVD, use that. If it's not, then don't!

  • Copying/duplicating mini dvds

    I've got a mini-dvd camcorder from Sony that, unfortunately, does not have Firewire. I can record onto the following mini-dvd formats: -R, -RW & +RW.
    My questions are:
    (1) As a general proposition, is any one media format better than any other (aside from the ability to re-write)?
    (2) if I pop the minidvd into my iMac (I've got a drawer, NOT slot load), will I be able to simply make duplicate copies to either other mini-dvds or to regular size DVDs so I can distribute to friends and family? Note: I've read the posts about the essential inability to edit the videos so that's not my concern. Rather, I was just wondering whether I can do a straight duplication of the disks.
    (3) If so, what is the process - do I simply drag the contents of the mini-dvd to my hard drive then place the new disk in, drag the contents back to the new disk and burn?
    (4) Is there a software package to simplify matters for me? Toast, perhaps.
    Thanks - sorry for the multiple questions but want to make sure my ducks are in a row before Christmas.

  • Need HELP - Duplicating a DVD (movie)

    Is anyone able to help me copy a movie onto my macbook so I can place it on my ipod? Please!?!?!?
    Message was edited by: DWSLAS

    Hi DWSLAS,
    You may not be allowed to duplicate the movie, but you are entitled to make a backup of it. I use a neat little program called Handbrake follow this link to download it and it will do exactly what you want! Good Luck!

  • First Play Menu doesn't work properly on DVD Recorders

    I am an experienced PC Encore user. Just finished authoring a DVD with Encore CS3. Test results on Toshiba and Liteon DVD recorders yield a failed first play response (no menu appears). Test results on Sony set top players and computer DVD players, first play responds correctly (menu appears instantly).
    I have created and tested DVDs on the same DVD recorders with earlier versions of encore and never had failed first play results.
    Further, if I press the DVD Menu on the remote, the menu appears.
    I discovered a work-around. I duplicated the DVD in a duplicator, tested the duplicate in the recorders and it worked properly. It must have stripped the header information from the master.
    This is a problem with Encore CS3 and needs to be addressed. Many people use their DVD recorder as players, which is one of the reasons we use recorders to test.
    Response . . .

    AS opposed to lyonseye I am a plain novice on Encore - always dependent on templates. Now , I've just recently finished my first proper encore-project. Simple enough - one single menu linking to three timelines and wow my own pictures as static background! Checked and built (+R single layer) without any hickups in the error-report-department.
    The disk plays perfect in various set top dvd's
    but not on my own recorder(s)!!! ( 3 different machines tested with various players).
    I won't go into machinery details (harm :-)) but would be happy if someone could explain to me if this is a common problem or eventually could point to the most usual reason for this unexpected behaviour.
    Another question: the manual states that it is possible to apply motion background to the entire menu. I've tried this , linking video to buttons are easy enough as is linking sound to the menu. But pickwhipping ( did I spell that correct ,wonder) video to the background is a different animal.Short takes of approx 1 min duration was ment looping until buttons beeing pressed. Not working for me , maybe others could tell me the secret?

  • Help - How do I convert raw DVD files to a playable DVD?

    I really messed up. I was trying to copy some home movie DVD's for my family. I put the CVD into my I-Mac and then selected the disc image in the finder once it appeared on the desktop and then clicked 'File - Duplicate' from the Finder menu. It created another image on the desktop with all the same files as the DVD in it. I then would eject the DVD and put in a blank DVD-r and then drag that folder onto the DVD, open the finder window for the blank DVD-r where I saw the files, and hit 'Burn'. I thought that would be duplicating the DVD but it actually just created a DVD with the data files on it and it won't play on a DVD player. How do I take the raw DVD files (with the Audio-ts and Video-ts folders) and create a burnable DVD? Can I do that with I-dvd? Is there a quicker way? Please help

    Click here and follow the instructions, which will work with any unprotected DVD.

  • Sense Code Error 31000 while burning DL DVD Encore CS5 Macbook Pro

    While attempting to burn a Dual Layer DVD on my Macbook Pro I got this error: "Sense Code 31000" just before it started to burn.
    I changed the burn speed, verified my laptop burns DVD+R DL discs. Any help is much appreciated. Must burn a master to duplicated 100 dvds by Friday. Thanks!

    Hi,
    Sense Code errors are hardware or blank media related.
    Try to burn with other blank disc, if it does not work then the problem may be because of burner.

  • Using MacBook Pro running 10.7, how do I copy a DVD that is NOT commercially created, but was created on a Mac using IDVD?

    Having a DVD that I created on a Mac, how do I make additional copies?  I know from reading some instructions, to use the Disk Utility, but from there I don't see the inserted DVD to be copied on the left side, as the instructions say for step #2.  Please help

  • HOW DO I FINALIZE A DVD IN STUDIO PRO4!!!?

    My DVD's always have glitches, but there are no glitches in the final cut project or in studio 4 simulation (w/ an mpeg2). The company duplicating my dvd's said it is because I never finalized my DVD. I used the "build and format" option with "lossless linking" (whatever that means.)
    What is the difference between formatting in "lossless linking" and formatting in "standard DVD-R mode?" Should I switch to standard DVD-R mode? I don't even know how.
    MOST OF ALL.......
    HOW DO I FINALIZE A DVD IN STUDIO PRO 4?
    If you know anything....please tell me...anything.

    That's the problem, finalizing appears to be related to specialized recorders like DVRs and to eraseable recordable blank media like RW. With RW you can create a multisession event and add data to it. This is not case with -R, because they are not multisession or rewritable. Was the blank disc a -RW?
    You can verify a DVD R when burning in Toast, but I've had discs replicated and never had the request.

  • Playing DVDs on players

    I have started to noticed something, that whenever i make a DVD, whether through Encore or anything else, our older DVD player doesn't support it, only our other, newer one does. The DVDs i am making are on DVD+Rs. I always wondered how the big companies like MGM and Disney all make their DVDs able to play on all DVD players but i cannot. Are they using a certain type of media to do so, or is it a setting on their software? If it is a setting, can i do it with Encore? I'm wondering because i'm finishing up a DVD to sell, and i'm putting them on Hp DVD+Rs, and i'm starting to dread if my clients will be able to play them at all.

    DVD+R is a relatively new and unofficial format. Especially older set top DVD players may not support it at all.
    What MGM and Disney are doing is releasing their titles as
    replicated (pressed) DVDs. This is the kind that any set top player can use. You can have your DVDs pressed too, but a replication run usually starts with a minimum of at least 300 copies.
    With duplicated (burned) DVDs the best you can do to make them as compatible as possible with set top players is:
    Use a
    maximum bit rate of no more than 7Mb/s.
    Let Encore convert the audio to Dolby Digital (AC3).
    Use good quality DVD-R media, e.g. Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.
    Keep your burner's firmware up-to-date.
    Burn at the lowest speed your burner allows. (With modern burners that is usually 4x.)
    Never use adhesive labels on your discs.

  • Duplicating a movie on another computer

    Hi all,
    Should I choose "Make movie self-contained" if I want to put it on a disk for my friend so that she can make copies on her Apple?
    I have tried every way I know to send my burned movie to her in a way that will allow her to duplicate it. I made the movie in iDVD and have sent her the archive file, the disk image, the .dvdproj file. I've followed the steps in the Apple Help instructions on "Duplicating a DVD" (in the Disk Utility help menu). Nothing has worked – greyed out options, error messages...I dunno.
    Anyway, I'm all out of ideas and just thought the 'self-contained' option might work. If that is the go, could you explain how to make a copy?
    Thanks in advance,
    Andrew

    To create a video DVD with iDVD, first, from FCE, Export/QuickTime Movie; in general whether you set Make Movie Self-Contained or not does not make a difference. Then import the resulting .mov file into iDVD and create (using iDVD) an image file (.img) instead of burning a physical DVD.
    The image file may be copied for example to a pen drive, so you can transfer it to another Mac and burn it there; or you can burn it right on your Mac using Disk Utility (it's quite simple: just drag the .img to the left pane in Disk Utility, then select it and click on the burn button). This DVD can be played on any DVD player.
    When exporting from FCE you should set Make Movie Self-Contained only if you want to move the .mov file itself to another Mac (or continue editing after export) before importing to iDVD: in fact Make Movie Self-Contained ensures that all media for that movie are in the .mov file; otherwise this will be a reference movie pointing to media files in the FCE scratch directories, and copying the .mov file will break these links.

  • Xtra Error Message on Startup

    About 6 months ago, I published a DVD for a project using
    Director MX2004.
    Everything seemed to work fine at that point, including the
    autorun for the DVD.
    I had published a few dvd's and no problems from any of them.
    The company that I created this for then duplicated the DVD's
    and distributed them to others.
    Now, I received a message from the company saying that many
    users are receiving an error message reading,
    "The appliction or DLLD:\xtras\Budapi.x32 is not a valid
    windows image."
    Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be?
    Again, the DVD works fine for me but not for others.
    Any help would be appreciated.
