Duplicating a Sequence renames all clips

All of a sudden, after months of stable operations, when I duplicate a sequence, all the clips in the timeline get their names changed to the name of the new sequence. Every time I rename the sequence, the clips get renamed again to match the sequence name.
Also, Find Frame (f) and shift-f don't work. Shift-f highlights the new sequence in the Bin.
These don't fix it:
trashing prefs
relaunching the app
rebooting the computer
repairing permissions
running Disk Warrior
I suppose re-installing the app is next, but a friend just told me that he got the same thing, and reinstalling didn't fix it for him.
Any ideas?

I found a half-*** workaround: Create new sequence. Copy all from old sequence. Paste into new sequence. This solved the problem of clip renaming on V2, but not V1 .
Also, when I changed the name from Untitled Sequence to >whatever<, it stealthily changed it's name - several minutes later - to the same as the original sequence that the footage was copied from.
I changed the name again, which stuck for a few minutes, but then later, it changed it's name back to the original sequence again!
This is probably the oddest bug I've yet encountered in FCP. I opened other projects, and am not getting the same behavior. So, I'm concluding this has something to do with the footage, or a combination of sequence settings.
In this case all the footage was ripped (legally) using MPEGStreamclip from DVDs to ProResHQ, and put into a 720x480 Sequence in FCP using the ProResHQ compressor.
Another curiosity is that I get the red timeline bar using Safe RT which should not be the case, since the footage codec matches the sequence settings.

  • Corrupt Sequence renames all clips

I've never seen this before but i have a sequence that automatically is renaming all the clips that i dump into it.
If i create a new sequence and copy and paste the clips into it the new sequence takes on the name of the clips.
I tried creating a new project, pasting the clips into it but the same thing happens. all the clips and the sequence all have the same name.
Nothing unusual about my sequence settings, XDCAM HD 422 60i CBR, rendering 8-bit colour, using the Matrox M02.
The original clips in the bins have not been changed, (some were this morning but i changed them back using the rename to file function) just the names in the sequence are all identical.
Is there any way to get the clip names back in the timeline.
The other strange thing is when i hit the match frame key, or the button in the canvas, it doesn't obey, the timeline playhead snaps back to the start of the sequence, and marks a screwed up In and out point. but this doesn't happen in the other sequences.
I'm at a loss on this one, never seen this before.
    any suggestions?

    Hi Rienk,
sorry about not starting a new thread (I wasn't sure if I should), I'll do so next time - hope you don't mind if I continue here for now.
I've linked the muticlips in FCP by selecting the clips in the sequence timeline & linking them (modify>link, or command "L"). I haven't nested the clips at all. I've linked them purely for ease of editing; as I've been cutting out sections of the performance, I wanted to keep all these clips in sync as a group.
I've copied the sequences into new projects - creating a new individual project for each performer (having all ten peformance edits in one edit project was killing my system). However, it doesn't seem to matter if I copy the whole sequence into a new project, or just copy & paste the grouped clips into a sequence in a new project, I invariably get the same result: all the linked clips for the audio (but not the multicam edited clips) are re-labelled with an identical clip name in the timeline, even though they still re-link / re-connect to the correct source files externally from FCP.
My concern is having correct labelling on each track so that my sound mixer can easily identify each track.
And no, there's definitely NO NO nesting involved!
Cheers & thanks for your response!

  • Project renames sequence and all clips in the sequence when a clip is added

My project is renaming my sequences and the clips in those sequences whenever I add a clip. For example, I have a sequence called "dance section 2", which contains 20 some-odd clips with various names. When I add a clip named "drop from above", the name of the sequence is changed to "drop from above", and the name of every other clip in the sequence is also changed to "drop from above" (video, audio, stills, everything). When I add a clip named "spins", all the names are changed to "spins".
The name of the sequence is changed in both the timeline and the browser, but the names of the other clips are changed only in the timeline. In the browser, they keep their old names. The exception to this is the last clip added before the name changer. For example, if I add "drop from above" to the sequence, and then add "spins", the clip named "drop from above" is renamed "spins" in the browser as well as in the timeline, but the other clips are renamed only in the timeline.
The clips in the sequence also keep their original content - so the sequence looks the same as it did before, but all the names of the clips are changed.
This is only happening in one project. All of my other projects are working fine.
I've tried restarting and deleting preferences. I've also looked at the autosave vault for the project. The backup projects saved after a certain time all behave the same way, and the projects before that time all behave normally. I can't imagine what would have caused this, though, since I've been working on this project all day and nothing's happened to my computer or hard drive or anything.
Also, there are no freeze frames at the beginnings of my sequences (I read another thread with a somewhat similar issue and getting rid of freeze frames seemed to help that person).
I'm in FCP 7.0 on a Macbook Pro.
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Welcome to the discussions...
I've had this happen. My guess is that it's related to round-tripping to/from Color, but I can't be sure. IMHO, the sequence is corrupted. I just dealt with it for a while, then rebuilt it by making changes from an earlier version.
Sorry I don't have a better solution, but at least you know you're not alone.

  • Deleting all Clip Markers in a Sequence

Many of the clips in my sequence have Markers. I would now like to remove them all so my sequence is devoid of Clip Markers.
Mark>Markers>Delete All will happily remove any +Sequence Markers+ I have, but will not remove any of the +Clip Markers+. Is there a way to delete all clip markers from the sequence. Preferably, I would like to remove them from the sequence while leaving them in their original master clips.
    Thanks,

Does it, in the process, also remove the markers from the master clip as it appears outside the sequence?

  • Automatic renaming of clips after linking....

Working on a Dual System production, where I roughly line up the videofiles (EOS 5D converted to ProRes LT) including guide audio with the multitracked audiofiles (poly). Sync using Plural Eyes, and some manually. After sync is matched, I link the videoclip with the audio to get a new Master clip. This USUALLY do no harm to the original clipnames, but recently a lot of the audioclips got renamed after the videoclip....all by itself! Or not???! It's not consistent, but I cannot recall I've done things in another way when it happens. It's extremely important that the audioclips keeps their original name after linking, because of audio post i Pro Tools afterwards. When I unlink a new MasterClip, select an audio clip and check the Source - the original filename is there. But how can I revert all these renamed files back to it's sourcename? Found some similar cases here on AD, but with no luck yet. Exported a sequence as XML and imported into a new, fresh Project. Same names on all clips a before.... Exported an OMF 2.0, but it created only new audiofiles based on the NOT WANTED clipnames. Anyone??? Thanks.

Hmm, so to recap, you cannot rename clip names after file names correct?
    correct
have you checked permissions on that disc? you can read and write to it yes?
    yes
and after using pluraleyes the synced sound wavs get renamed to the same name as the video file that your syncing to?
no, it happens either after linking the new (seperate recorded) sound to the video (most of the time), and/or making a cut. This occurs at random; there is a soundfile in the synced sequence that changes its name to the video when I cut it with the blade - first part stays correct, but with second part the soundfile copies its name from the video. Yesterday it was even the other way round. Cleaning up parts in the synced sequence I made cuts and the video after that cut got the same name as the seperate soundfiles.
are you sure that the new sound is actually there? its not just lost the pluraleyesed combination has it and you're seeing the unlinked version? sorry if those sound daft questions but just covering basics.
Yep sound is there, I have a masterdisk, copies everything to the FCP disk
Ive not used pluraleyes, but it sounds to me like either a disc permissions thing or some funny combo of fcp and pluraleyes, have you checked with pluraleyes to make sure of compatability with your vers of FCP?
using both last version but I did not inform Pluraleyes yet if they're familiar with the problem
sorry cant be of more help at the mo, hopefully someone will chime in soon with a solution

  • How to auto fade or dip to black for many or all clips?

I'm working on credits, 50+, and page down is getting old fast. I would love to just select all and apply a dip or fade, any suggestions?

Select all clips, then go to Sequence > Apply Default Transitions to Selection. This assumes you've set your default transition and transition duration.
Can't remember if this is default (I think so), but the keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Alt+Shift+D.

  • Renaming Individual Clips

Hello, everyone. I have no idea how this happened, but whereas before I would be able to cut up a clip and rename each segment individually, now when I name one segment, ALL of them are changing to that name. It's driving me up the wall. How can I get FCP to NOT rename each video clip to the new name I place on another clip? BTW, this is only happening to the video clips. The audio clips are retaining the different names put on them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you very much,
    Javier Calderon

Thank you both Jerry and Nick. Making a subclip is definitely a way to do it, and I remember now. I tell you what, however: I was previously simply control clicking on the clip in the timeline and going to Item Properties and renaming the clip right there . . . and it was working just fine before . . . It's not anymore . . . It seemed sooo easy to do it that way. The subclip method does indeed work, but since I'm renaming quite a few clips, it would be great if I could make it as streamlined a possible.
    Thanks!

  • How do I rename each clip in a new smart keyword colletion (subclips)?

I sometimes have multiple intviews, and I want to be able to pull multiple sound bites from one clip as subclips so I can browse through them as I edit. If you take a clip, command k, create a smart collection, and put multiple clips from the same source clip, if you rename one of these clips it renames all of them, making it impossible to rename the individual clips, thus making it just a shade better than just scrubbing through the original each time. Is there a way to name or tag each clip so that I quickly find an individual clip coming from a group of bites from the same source?
    Thanks!

If you take a clip, command k, create a smart collection,
That's a keyword collection, not a smart collection. Keywords cannot be changed. If you mark a section as a favorite, the favorite can be renamed. These are not subclips and do not behave the same.

  • Saving a sequence and all associated files or travel

I'm working on a project that has 60 separate sequences and would like to save just one of the sequences with all associated files and assets to an external pocket drive. My hope is to be able to leave the main media drive at my workplace (which contains all the project files and content-irreplaceable) and bring home one sequence at a time for evening work. Is there an easy way to do this through media manager???

You can use Media Manager to do this and only keep the files specific to that sequence but the drawback is you won't have the rest of the footage from your project should you need it.
What I normally do in this case is take everything.
Copy all the relevant Capture scratch folders as well as other project related elements (music, titles, graphics etc) to the "home drive" (good to have a backup of that "irreplaceable stuff anyway)
Open the project in question and save it as is, using a different name, to the "home drive", then, if you like, delete all the sequences you don't want and save again.
Take the new project home and when you open it the first time from the new drive, you will likely be asked to reconnect the media. Tell it to look for the footage on the new drive and when it locates it, select Connect all files in relative path, then reconnect.
Again, if you really only want clips specific to one sequence, look to Media Manager. I rarely use it so can't offer advise on how to do so.

  • Analyze ALL clips in project for image stabilization

In older versions of iMovie for Mac (I used iMovie '09 until I finally get myself to switch to the recent version) I was able to analyze ALL clips for image stabilization, which took some time but could be accomplished without me sitting in front of my Mac. Now it seems that in iMovie 10 the stabilization feature only works for the selected clip. That means you select it, click the stabilization checkbox and wait and wait and wait. Then you get to make the right setting (percentage) and move on to the next clip, click the checkbox and wait and wait and wait.
I tried selecting all clips with Cmd + A and click the checkbox, and the wheel started to spin. I was already feeling lucky to have found the solution to the afore mentioned problem, but when the wheel stops spinning and I select a random clip, some of them are analyzed but most are not.
Is there any way to have ALL clips analyzed without user interaction?

  • How can I rename all the images in different folders into a same name ?

I need to rename all the jpgs in my music folders into "cover.jpg" so my mp3 player will recognize them as album covers, I've tried to use Automator but couldn't find a proper way to do it.
Could anybody give me a hint about this? BTW I've kept only one picture in a single folder.
    Thanks~~

I haven't tested this so maybe make a small folder to test on. In Automater create the following workflow
    Ask for Finder Items
Get Folder Contents (Repeat for each subfolder found)
Filter Finder Items (set Kind is image)
    Rename Finder Items
You may need to play with the last one a little but I think Name Single Item should do the trick. This does assume there is only one image file in each folder. I did something similar to change the case of a bunch of random files over multiple directories.

  • My 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

My 2006 - 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV 1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. However, when I open the project on my other Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and FCP 6, the footage works fine as it does on my newer Imac running Mavericks and FCP 7. I have tried a Quicktime update on the Mac Pro that the footage doesn't work on but it says that I already have the newest version of Quicktime installed. I have also tried reinstalling the Final Cut Pro Studio twice, still no fix. I'm completely out of solutions and need to be able to edit HDV footage on this machine. Any help would be great. Thanks.

there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up.  Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests.  But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum.  there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc.

  • How do I move all clips from an event into the edit line...

If I have an event of tons of clips that comprise an hour of footage, how can I select all of those clips at once from the event library and transfer them to the edit line above?
There is no Select All feature, that I can see, and it takes forever to highlight each chunk of clips, one at a time, and drag them up.
I'd like to drag the whole 1 hour's worth of clips in one event in my library up to the edit line at once.
    Thanks!

    Hi Rich,
I am trying to somehow "select all" clips, (not just all shots within a clip), but all 100 or so slips from an entire tape, from the first clip, to the last clip, and everything in between, and move them all up to the edit pane at once.
As it is now, I have to click on a thumbnail, select the entire clip, and move one clip at a time up to the edit pane.
I want to move all the clips up at once.
