Duplicating library on new  computer from external disk on old

Somewhere this has probably been addressed but I haven't had any luck in finding the answer, so I apologize if this has been beat to death.
I have all my photos on a 2nd internal drive on my G5 and just upgraded to iPhoto 7.? after reading that iPhoto '08 didn't require it's own hierarchy, i.e., I could leave my photos in the file structure I wanted and still be able to take advantage of the tagging and album features of iPhoto. I set preference to NOT import photos into iPhoto.
I went through 1,000's of photos and organized them into albums, adding keywords and adjusting date taken since many were scans of film. Everything worked great!
I just bought a MacBook Pro for those times traveling or on vacation to have available all the applications and library of photos on the G5 desktop. I used the migration assistant to move user data to the new system and everything went smoothly, except for iPhoto.
When I open iPhoto it shows all the albums I've set up but then complains it can't find the original. I've tried several things to have it just recognize an exact duplicate of the folder containing the photos on the G5's 2nd internal drive but it just keeps complaining.
My question after all that is quite simply, is there a way to have iPhoto on the MacBook Pro accept that the originals are on the local drive (exact copy of the folder from the 2nd G5 drive) have just moved locations?
I would really appreciate any help so I don't have to replicate all the editing and keywording done on the G5.

DennyF:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There is no easy way to relink an alias based library. Often if the library and source files are on the same drive and then moved to a new drive they can be relinked if their relative position to each other is the same. I take it you've tried, when clicking on a thumbnail, navigating to the location of the source file on the G5 and selecting it? Sometimes I've found that will relink the entire folder of source files. The big gotcha are movies. Unless they are online iPhoto will keep asking to find them whether you're looking at them or not. For that reason I recommend users have a separate library for movies.
Here's a way to create a new alias based library on your MBP and still preserve your events, comments and keywords.
1 - follow the first portion of Tutorial #1 .
2 - create a new alias based library and import the source files from the G5 (again, don't import movies or you won't be able to use the library in its minimal mode when on the road).
This will give you the same events, keywords and comments but not albums.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How do I upload songs onto my new computer from external hard drive

Hello!  I purchased a new computer and I am trying to upload my Itunes libraries onto it.  I was able to download all the files/songs/apps from my old winodws XP computer to an external hardrive.  I can open the exterenal hard drive on the new computer (Windows 7) but I do not know how to upload all info on the hard-drive into Itunes.  I found a way to click one folder at a time an upload one song at a time but that would require 4 or 5 clicks per song and it would take forever to do it this way.  Is there a way to transfer everything (files/folders/playlists/apps etc) all at one time?  I have reaad posts about authorizing new computers etc but have no idea what that means or how to do it.  I am new to Itunes so if you could walk me through the steps I would appreciate it greatly.  I have 5 Iipods sharing music on one computer so I really don't want to have to start my library from scratch.  Thank you for your help.

Normally all you need do is copy the entire iTunes folder from the music folder in your profile on the old computer into the music folder in your profile on the new one. If the library and media folders were split into separate locations then it is much the same, but the media folder should be restored to the same absolute path it previously occupied.

  • How do I import music files to new computer from external hard drive containing them

Have an older computer(G5 iMac) with Tiger 10.4.11 and iTunes that crashed.  Have that computer and older version of iTunes residing on an external hard drive.  I want to import music to new comptuer with newer version of iTunes.  External hard drive is partitioned with just iTunes section.  Any one done this before?

If you want to use the old iTunes library that you have from the ext HD then just drag the iTunes folder to the new Mac.
By default the iTunes folder Is Located - HD>Users>Your Account>Music>iTunes - if the internal HD has no iTunes library then just replace the iTunes folder with the one from the ext HD.
Launch iTunes with the 'option' key down and point iTunes to the iTunes Library that you want to open. It will remember the next time.

  • All songs imported to iTune on new computer from external are not found.  HELP!

I have a new laptop.  I installed iTunes on the computer and associated my external drive's fold with all my music as my main source.  When I brought them into iTunes, they all have a small "i" in a circle and can't be located.  NOW WHAT???
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

You guys are the best - thank you.
Since writing what I did below, Bekha wrote me back from last night (Apple rep I spoke with) and gave me the BEST article to do what I needed to do that I want to share with you:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527?viewlocale=en_US
I did call Apple last night and had a really fun chat with this girl who said she did this three different ways and had trouble remembering how she did it all of them.  But one of her suggestions (which I didn't use and am just explaining for anyone else who reads this) was to move all her music to her new computer's My Music folder.  Then she opened Windows Media Player as they were associated with WMP.  Then she installed her iTunes and when it opened, it asked her if she wanted that to be her default music player and she said yes.  Somehow it transferred the ability to play that entire folder of My Music t iTunes.  HOWEVER, she said sometimes it didn't work and would have to shut down and start again (too much fuss for me).
I found another way to do it.  All my music is in a folder called iTunes Music which I created and have on an external F drive.  I opened that drive and highlighted the single music files and dragged them into the iTunes on the new computer.  Maybe because I choose to use "Manage music manually," that worked.  Now, of course it's time to make all my playlists, drag them onto my iPhone, and back them up -- and I still have a lot more to put in.  But that is how you can do it if you don't have a copy of your old iTunes available due to a HD crash. I never lose my music that way, keeping it on an external (actually, two), even if my computer decides to crash.
Thanks again for all your help.

  • Move iTunes library from external disk to internal disk

    Hello,
I am currently using a Mac Mini with an external disk to store my iTunes library as well as all the media files, apps, etc. The library is managed (consolidated) by iTunes and is also organized by iTunes.
I am about to buy the new Macbook Pro and with a 1 TB drive, I wanted to move the iTunes stuff (library, media, playlists, play counts, ratings, everything) to the internal drive of the new MBP.
    My questions are:
Can I do this migration (from external disk to internal disk of new Mac) as part of the Migration Assistant?
In case I can't do the above, what is the best way to do this after the new Mac has been set up?
How do I ensure that play counts, playlists, ratings, album art are preserved as I have spent considerable time setting those up?
I have 3-4 IOS devices syncing to this library. How do I ensure that when I sync them to the new computer/library, they will continue to work?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    1. See if this support answers your query http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889 and  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
    3. Make sure complete intune folder is copied over. The Itunes Library.itl file contains all meta data.
    4. Maybe someone else can make a definitive comment on this. I used migration assistant and was able to sync my ipad and ipod classic without doing anything special.  I presume that it worked because both were syncing to the same library albeit on a different computer.

  • How do I transfer my itunes library to a new computer from my iPhone. The old one no longer works.

How do I transfer my itunes library to a new computer from my iPhone. The old computer no longer works.

    You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

i just had a new hard drive installed. After loading everything back on my computer from external drive, i came to the "select wireless network screen. I've misplaced the WEP password for my internet. Is there anyway to find it on another computer?

Maybe. What kind of other computer are you talking about? What operating system is it running? What kind of wireless router are you using?
Your best bet may be to just reset the router and set it up again.
Just so you know, WEP is a very old security system for wireless and is considered insecure. If you have it available, use WPA2.

You do not.. the iPhone is not a backup device.
Copy the entire iTunes directory from the old computer or the backup of the old computer to the new computer.

  • How do I transfer imovie projects and events to new mac from external hard drive

    Hi dalbatross,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
Did you set up your new computer by creating a Time Machine backup and restoring from it?
If so, the Events and Projects that were on your internal Macintosh HD would copied to your new computer.
Here is another way to copy the events & projects to the new computer from the external drive:
iMovie Help: Work with multiple libraries
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3fa25bae7
Copy or move projects, events, or clips between libraries or hard disks
Connect a hard disk that contains the target library to your computer, or copy the target library to your computer.
Choose File > Open Library, and choose an option from the submenu. You can choose from recently opened libraries at the top of the submenu, locate an existing library on your computer, or create a new library.
The selected library is opened in the Libraries list, with the first event selected and its contents displayed in the browser.
In the Libraries list, select the event that contains the item you want to move or copy.
In the browser, select the item you want to move or copy.Note:  To select multiple items, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
    Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.
To copy items between events or libraries: Option-drag the clip or project to another event or library by first starting to drag and then holding down the Option key as you drag.

  • Transferring playlist to new laptop from external hard drive and old laptop

I've seen similar topics before but none exactly describing my situation. I currently have itunes installed on my work laptop, but have the majority of my music on my external 120GB hard drive. When I add songs to itunes, I add them from the music folder on my external hard drive, thus the external hard drive must be plugged in to be able to play my music. However, if I import a cd it gets saved to my C drive on my work laptop under the itunes music folder and gets played from here.
I recently purchased a new personal laptop and would like to export my entire music library and all playlists from my current work laptop and external hard drive so that I would be able to have all my music in itunes on my new laptop without having to manually adding songs and changing the song info again. I worried that if I copy my itunes music folder to my new laptop it will look for the E drive (external hard drive) to play them rather than my new laptop hard drive. What's the easiest way to accomplish this task?? Please advise.
    Thanks..

  • New computer has been loaded with old Itunes library but a number of earlier purchases say they are not "authorized" on this computer even though the bulk of my library works-- this is only about 5% of the total but were all purchased 9/18/2008 or before?

New computer has been loaded with old Itunes library but a number of purchases prior to 9/18/08 are not "authorized" when I try to play them.
They are all items I purchased from Itunes but they won't play any longer even though they show in my Itunes library.
Doesn't work when I enter account info and password either.
This is only about 5% of my library and many purchased items play no problem.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Two words, Migration Assistant. It will transfer files between two Macs using a firewire cable automagically.
    http://www.apple.com/pro/tips/migration.html
Three words, Target Disk Mode. Use a firewire cable to connect two Macs and then hold down the T key when you boot the Mac you want to transfer files from, G4 Tower. It will appear as a hard drive on the desktop of your Macbook Pro. Then you can just drag and drop the whole folder.

I Have a Ipod Classic that all my music is on.
After my previous computer crashed I have not had any of my music able to be transfered to the new computer from the Ipod.
Is there a way to do this?

Unfortunately, unless you have a backup and can restore the iTunes library to the new computer, you are stuck with the current state of the iPod. This is one of those things that makes doing backups so important.
Unless your music is all purchased from iTunes (not from your own CD's that you imported into iTunes and then downloaded to the iPod), you will be able to re-download all your iTunes store music back to the iPod when you install iTunes on the new computer. When you first attach the iPod to the new computer and new iTunes the first time it will tell you that this iPod is synced with another iTunes library and let you initialize the iPod (which will erase everything on the iPod - so don't do this unless you don't care about the stuff on the iPod now).
I've seen 3rd party apps in the past that will let you copy music/content from iPod to computer and bypass iTunes, but not sure if they still exist as this was several years ago.
    good luck
