Duplicating Photos in iPhoto '08 is rough - any solutions?

Two problems: One is that duplicating photos in iPhoto doesn't always work. Usually when I highlight a photo and select "Duplicate" I get a new version of the photo. Sometimes it does nothing at all, and other times it take me out of the event that I'm viewing making it so that I have to go back in and find the photo (which takes time. Are there updates or work-arounds for these problems?
2 - This is the bigger one. I select a photo and choose "Edit in external editor", Photoshop opens with the photo that I'm editing right there. Beautiful! But then I make my edits and try to save it under a different name (Save As) -- Where did the photo go? Isn't there a way to get it to save back into the iPhoto library? Or do I have to save to my desktop and reimport it (which creates a new event, so I then have to drag back to the original event.... big hassle).
Any suggestions on either or both issues? Thanks very much.

There have been issues reported with duplicating photos in iPhoto - search the iPhoto forums for Duplicating
The bigger question is why you are doing lots of duplicates. Generally it is not necessary since iPhoto ALWAYS maintains the original and you can always revert to it if you need to - maybe you are making duplicates that are uncessary?

When you edit in an external editor you just save (not save as) and the photo goes back to iPhoto and iPhoto maintains the original and tracks the modified version and everything is cool - when you do a save as you break the chain and iPhoto no longer knows about your photo or how it relates to the photos that you started with - so if you do that you have to reimport the new photo into iPhoto (just as you would any other new photo) and iPhoto will now maintain it as an original and track any modifications you do to it (along with the one you started with which is a different original and maybe modified version)
So I think the answer to both questions may be a better understanding of how iPhoto works and your workflow

How can I avoid duplicating photos in iPhoto?

You can use one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when one library has been imported into another with iPhoto 8 and earlier.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.

Zoom in-out and rotation in trackpad doesn't work in iPhoto and Aperture. Any solution?

Sound like a trackpad problem and not an iPhoto one.  Have you asked in the forum dedicated to the Mac model you're using or is this an add on trackpad?

  • I have updated my iphone and all  data have gone including photos contacts and notes .is there any solution? I am about to syncope!

I have updated my iphone4 and all  data have gone including photos contacts and notes .is there any solution?

All data that was on your iPhone should be on your computer.
All photos that were transferred to your iPhone from your computer should remain on your computer and can be retransferred. Photos/videos captured by the iPhone can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera - especially before installing an iOS update. Re-transfer these photos from your computer as with any other photos available on your computer.
Contacts and notes are designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer, and there are some free email accounts that support syncing contacts and notes over the air.

  • I am unable to import photos into I Photo from my Kodak Z700  camera. any solutions?

I have tried over and over again to import photos from my Kodak Z700 camera intoI Photo.  I keep getting the essage that the format is incorrect.  Any Solutions?

There has been a problem between iPhoto and Koday EasyShare cameras for quite a while now, since Snow Leopard.  It appears to be something Apple can't fix so the problem lies with Kodak.  See the topic at the right under More Like This.
The workaround is to use a card reader with the memory card from the camera.

  • Help in duplicating photos in iPhoto

I cannot duplicate a photo unless I'm within the main iPhoto library (i.e., does not work within an album). When I then duplicate, my screen goes back to the entire library instead of those from which I selected, requiring me to reselect. It is not an impossible task, but takes time. Has this been upgraded? Is it a bug? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks.

Terence, thanks for your response. I tried what you suggested and it worked... somewhat. When I used "Events," the selected images did return without my having to reselect, although the return screen required me to scroll around to relocate the image. There have been occasions, perhaps with a different version of iPhoto, whereby the duplicated image returned side by side with its original. Do you have any thoughts on that? This may sound a bit fussy, but little quirks like this slow me up when I am working on a major order. Thanks again, Al

  • Following installation of iLife11, iPhoto died completely. Any solution known?

Following installation of iLife11, iPhoto died completely, not even available in finder! A solution proposal would be appreciated.

Well that would explain why iPhoto won't launch, no?
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

I had ordered a photo book print two years back. I want to reorder the same book again now. However, I have lost the album project/photos from iphoto.
Is there any way to see my print order history and reorder the same book for print ?

No.  Apple only keeps the pdf file for a book for 30 days.  Without the library and book project you won't be able to reorder the same book.
Even though the horse is out of the barn the following tutorial might be of help for future books, i.e. create a new library for each book): iP08 - Archiving an iPhoto Book for Editing and/or Ordering at a Later Date

  • How can I back up photos from iPhoto using terminal?

Can I backup my photos from iPhoto using terminal or any other way(to a portable hard drive) as I have turned my laptop on and it has came to a screen giving me the option to back up from time machine, reinstall IOS or clean my drives, but neither are working so I believe I am going to have to erase my whole hard drive and potentially get a new one, but my only problem is that I haven't backed up my iPhoto images before so is there anyway I can do this?

You are booted from Recovery Drive. Have you tried restarting so you boot normally?

  • IPhoto duplicating photos upon connecting iPhone

    Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.1
    iPhoto 9.6
    iPhone 4S iOS 8.1.2
Upon connecting my iPhone to my MacBook to import photos, iPhoto displays duplicates of every photo.
This problem manifests itself regularly (though not every time) and began after upgrading to OS X Yosemite.
Any thoughts on cause / solution?

    See this discussion:
iPhoto duplicating photos upon connecting iPhone
Are you shooting HDR or Burst photos?
If not, It seems to be a new bug, with no known clear solution.
The latest theory is, that dismounting the iPhone and mounting again will make the duplicates vanish from the import window.

  • IPhoto duplicated photos showing Originals and Modified folders?

Upon importing photos to iPhoto, many folders were duplicated. One folder has "Originals" and the other folder has the numbers you see in the iPhoto folder system such as "18" and "21." I understand that when you import photos, it places a copy in the originals folder. I"m assuming this is used when you use the "Revert to Originals" function. Why is iPhoto showing both copies? How can I turn this off? I'm assuming I don't want to delete one of these. This is not simply duplicates were downloaded.
    thanks!

    PostPunk:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It sounds like you imported a library into a new library when you upgraded to iPhoto 8 rather than let iPhoto 8 convert the older library to the new version. That method will import both the modified version along with the original as originals. If this is not what happened please describe how you went about importing the photos, where they came from, etc.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Is there any way to add text or arrows onto photos in iPhoto when creating a book?

I am creating a photo book (Album), in iPhoto, in Projects. There are some place where it would be helpful if I could draw an arrow on the Photo to indicate certain places. I also would like to add text onto a photo in the book. This is as well as typing in the 'text box' provided. It needs to be on the actual photo in the book. Is this possible? I am using Version 9.5.1 which i think is the latest and i am running on Maverick on my iMac.

There is no way to add anything to the face of a photo in iPhoto at all You will need an extenral editror for that kind of work. You can add text and arrows etc with Preview, already on your Mac or with apps like these:
    Seashore (free)
    The Gimp (free)
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    Pixelmator ($50 approx)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • IPhoto won't read any of my portrait photos, only the landscape ones. They only show up as black portraits and I already erased them off my memory card. Any idea how to retrieve them or fix the problem?

I am using a 16 GB Sandisk Extreme Pro SD Card with a Canon EOS 60D camera and my files are saved as .raw on the memory card. I imported all my photos into iPhoto and then clicked the 'delete photos', as I always do after I imported by pictures, but when I went through my pictures I saw some black rectangles. It appears that all my portrait-orientated photos are just black whereas my landscape photos are perfectly fine. My portrait potos did turn up on my camera screen when I checked them through as I took them but now they're gone. Any idea if this is a software problem with iPhoto, an error with my memory card or even my camera? I've experienced this problem a bunch of times and it's really starting to annoy me that I'm losing all my photos.

    What version of iPhoto?
Select one and rotate it. Then rotate it back. Does that make it appear?
A much better work flow is the keep the photos after importing.  Check the success the import, wait for at least one successful backup cycle then use you camera's format command to reformat the card
