Duplicating real paint mixing

Hi,
I'm currently in a color theory class where we're using paints to create chromatic gray scales.  So basically, you mix complimentary colors to create a neutral/gray color.  For example, if you mix green paint and red paint, you will get a dark gray color.  How do you do this in Illustrator?  The only thing I could think of was opening the gradient window and choosing red for one side and green for the other.  This creates a nice gradient between the two complimentary colors.  However, the middle color created in Illustrator is NOT gray.  It's just a light color and when I mix real paints, it is a very dark gray color.  Also, are there any existing swatches that already do what I need?  I've searched all the swatches and haven't found it.  It seems like it would be the most basic color swatch and I'd think it would already exist somewhere.
The main reason I'm asking is that I'd like to do my color design in Illustrator before I actually use real paints.  Obviously, additive color is not the same as subtractive color, but I was hoping there was a way I could do this.
Thanks,
Jon

Positive…yes it displays a result by that is actually a blending condition not an overprint. The only way you can physically run an overprint on press with process colors is to run it twice or on an eight color press and I doubt you would get this result.
This is two different CMYK swatches one set to overprint. The intersecting shape is an average of the two colors not an overprint even if the lighter green was printed on press with a second se of CMYK inks that intersecting color is not happening.
If  you make the lighter green a spot color you can overprint it. And you would get something like this in actuality.
However you are correct in that if printed in CMYK as process the above would print fine but there would be no physical overprint.
So my point is the overprint is not intended for this type of blending and it is not going to give the result that might be desired.

  • PS 12; Still no paint mixing palette?

Wow, love the new brushes in CS5 and the new rotate canvas tool.  And the performance on a MacBook Pro with a Cintiq? = WOW!
BUT, (here it comes)... 21 years later, I'm still left wanting a paint-mixing palette.  I'm trying out the new demo and can't find one.  I can't believe Adobe would build all these nice new brushes, even a new blending/mixing brush, yet have no palette for mixing paint.
PS has been my primary tool since 1989, and I would love to abandon Fractal/Corel-Painter once-and-for-all.  I would also love to ditch the toggle-two-canvases kludge.  I like to work in full-screen mode which disallows two canvases (painting and mixing-palette) on screen simultaneously.  And I don't want to mix paint in a corner of my canvas.  A dedicated mixing palette is pretty fundamental, in my view.
Did I miss something?  (I searched Help, Support, and the Forums; no joy).  Or is this indeed a glaring oversight?
    Thanks,
    DR

PS 12 isn't a painting application. It lacks a lot.
Performance is not acceptable. With my intuos4 and the newest drivers, rotating the canvas or resizing brushed with the touch ring is not usable.
You slide along the ring and the canvas still is turning 10 seconds later. Jeeezz! If you work in full screen mode or just hit the tab key to hide the palettes, the problem goes away. But then you won't have access to the options bar for the brush settings. You'll have to switch back and forth. Did every anyone try this at Adobe? Heck, if I'd produce such low quality work, I'd have run out of customers before I started.

  • How do I blend like I'm using real paint in CS6?

I've just moved from Paint Tool SAI to Photoshop CS6 and am completely new to photoshop. In SAI the paint on the brush would blend together automatically with other paint on the canvas, distorting the paint on the canvas and changing its shape and colour like they were really mixing and interacting. However in Photoshop when I try to do this the two colours don't acknowledge each other at all even when on the same layer. I've tried to create a similar effect and have found turning down the flow partially gives what I want but doesn't give the mixing effect. I don't want to have to switch to a different tool like the smudge or mixer brush to get this effect as I just want the brush to mix the paints automatically like in SAI. Does any one know how I can have this kind of painting? Thank you!

  • How do I overlay two scanned photos of a real painting?

I'm a professional artist so I need really good photos of my work for promo and gallery applications.  My Brother gave me a really good Canon Scanner.  He told me I should try and scan my paintings, laying them on the scanner one way then the other (from top bottom and then side to side).  Once in the computer he said I should overlay them in photoshop (Elements 7) to minimize the glare from the brushstokes (It's oil paint).  I attempted it with the help of an old discussion on the forum (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/944267).  It worked but it's really blurry.  I've tried playing with the opacity levels but can't seem fix it.  Any suggestions would be very appreciated!
    Andrew

    Hi Neale,
Thanks for replying.  The painting was scanned at a resolution of 300 dpi both times.  I assume that's ample for this purpose?
Yes, one image shows glare in one direction and the other image another direction and I'm trying to blend the non-glare elements of both images.
Using a mask to paint in the non-glare elements is likely what I'll need to do.
Here are some screenshots of the scanned oil sketch that show how far I've gotten and the problem.
Above is a detail showing what I mean about the glare from the brush strokes.  In a good artist grade print you wouldn't see so much of the glare.
I've got a backround and a layer - one is the 'top to bottom scan' and one is the 'side to side scan'.
When I put the one layer over the other it's a blurry mess.  The only thing I can think of is that one scan is ever so slightly tilted causing it to distort.
Let me know what you think.  If it helps, the scanner is the 'Canon Canoscan 9000F Mark II'.
Sorry if I'm a bit of a newcomer at this.  I've had Photoshop Elements 7 for a while now but have only been using it for common purposes and I'd really like to learn how to take advantage of all the features and tricks it can do.
    Cheers,
    Andrew

  • Mixing Color with a simple Brush Tool

Ok, I know this i probably a very rookie mistake, and the solution might be around the corner, but I really can get it.
I would like to use two colors to create a new one (like using a real color palette, on a real painting), using only the Brush tool, finding a middle tone between them. I've seen this simple procedure on Youtube, but I can't replicate it.
    So I have two colors:
I sample from the bright-blu to lighten up the dark-blu and starting to find the first shade.
But as you can see below, it does not merge the two colors, creating a gradation, it only paint the bright-blu OVER the dark-one.
The same happens in reverse (if I paint with the dark-blu over the bright-one).
No matter how many time I paint over, in shorts I can only replace one color with the other one.
As shown on the video, I use a Hard Round Brush (not the Mixer Brush Tool), with 100% opacity and 50% flow.
    Any idea?
    Hanks in advance,
    Franz

    Thank you, Sudarshan.
Actually the first video explain what I'm trying to achive, but not how to do it.
As you can see, he doesn't use the Mixer Brush (widely covered in the second video), he uses a simple Brush tool. Painting with some yellow over red, he blends the two color and comes out with an orange. As simple as that.
In my case, when I paint with the bright-blue over the dark-blu, (as in the picture), bright-blu totally cover the dark-blu. Doesn't merge with it.
So you can get a middle tone of blu (as he got the orange)
So, I'm thinking I've might accidentaly selected (or de-selected) 'something' in one of the billions menus of Photoshop.

  • Why is the jazz genius mix titled "Classical Mix"?

I'm running iTunes 10.7.0.21 and everything seems fine. The only strange thing is that I have two Genius mixes, each titled "Classical Mix." One of these consists of obviously classical music from my music library, but the other consists obviously of jazz. There is no Genius mix called "Jazz Mix," so it looks like the jazz mix has somehow gotten titled "Classical Mix." I also have other mixes (Alt. Singer/Songwriter Mix, Indie Rock Mix, Chamber Pop Mix, etc.), but it's really strange that a mix that consists of Billie Holliday, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Horn, Miles Davis, etc. has a label of "Classical Mix." Meanwhile, the second "real" Classical Mix has Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi, etc. This is really strange.
Is there any way to retitle my Genius Mixes?  Is this a bug?  I look at my music by genre and I clearly have 120 albums that are labeled as "Jazz," so why does iTunes insist on calling this music a "Classical Mix"?
I've tried turning off Genius and turning it back on, but that does nothing. I've figured out which "Classical Mix" is really the jazz mix, so this is really a minor annoyance, but why doesn't this work correctly?
    Thanks.

The latter.  I just recorded a bass track as an audio track along with tracks for guitar, banjo, harmonica, etc.  (I bounce off line so playing along with the bounce is not possible.)  The thing is that the other instruments I play are all acoustic, so they go on their tracks through a mic. The bass is an electric bass guitar, and while I have an amp and could mic it, it just seemed easier to put it on a track by plugging it right into the preamp, which has an "instrument" input setting as an alternative to the "microphone" input setting.
What is so screwy about this is that the normalize function in the bounce window should make proportionate adjustments to all instruments.  At least that's what the owner's manual says it does.  But what it seemed to be doing is treating the directly input bass and the microphoned instruments seperately.  I usually record the bass track at a fairly high input so that I can clearly hear it in the headphones as I play over the previously recorded instruments and vocals.  Then I rely on the mixer to bring down the volume of the bass to a more reasonable level in the final mix.  But with the normalize function on in the bounce, the bass was still coming through in the bounce at the original input level or something very close to it.  That would be fine if the other instruments were properly jacked up as well so that the bounce sound like what I heard through the mixing board, only louder. But what I got was a mix with all of the all the other miced instruments sounding just like they did through the mixing board and the bass blasting away at the original recorded level notfwithstanding the volume reduction on the mixing board.  Very strange.  I assume this is a software bug, but now at least I have a reasonable work around.  Thanks again.

  • Painting Brush Issue

Ok I've been painting an image in Cs4 for some time but I took a break from it for a few weeks and I just came back to it, The issue I'm having is the way my brush presets are acting towards my brushes. I was using a Charcoal Brush which when messing with the presets works similar to a real paint brush in terms of the way the bristles show. This is sort of hard to explain but I'll try. My brush when I was using it, had like a dry brush effect; you could the see individual bristles depending on how much I messed with the brush shape dynamics, it could be thick like a loaded brush or it could be thin like a dry brush whatever. Now though when I try and recreate the brush when I go to the shape dynamics its not acting the way it was before. The brush wont thin out it takes on a splatter effect when I move the scattering slider and size jitter that never happened before and I cant get it to stop. Before the way those sliders would effect the brush is it would spread out the bristles now they just add a splatter on them and I cant change it.
^^^^^ That image is the brush before I mess with the presets. Normally I'd spread out the bristles but when I try I get the effect on the image below.
I know this is a bad explanation but I really cant figure out what I'm doing wrong I've reset the brushes I don't know how many times same with the presets I've messed with the opacity and flow but nothing is working. I wonder is there anyone who has an Idea of how I can possibly fix this? It's a problem because I need that effect from the brush in order to match the rest of the painting, Any help or advice would be appreciated, and again sorry for the bad explanation.

Yea I've tried both Size Jitter adds a splatter on it so I already have it at 0 and Pen Pressure just rounds out the edges which I don't mind but neither really have to do with the effect from before. I've tried to mimic the way I had the brush before going in and erasing some. The way it's working now is the top stroke and the way I had it is the bottom. Before the strokes where more spaced out, result of messing with the presets now if I mess with the they add a splatter to them.

  • PSE 9 - channel mixer

Is there a channel mixer or anything like it in PSE 9? I would love any info on this matter.
    Thanks so much.

Not really, the closest in pse9 is Enhance>Convert to Black and White.
If you want a real channel mixer, you could try Grant's Tools.

  • How to make fluid that looks like paint?

    hello
what is the best way to create paint-like fluid effect? i've tried to use Particular with aux emmision and Newton but it does not look like paint.
I want to have two effects - first - paint just flows through the screen and 2nd - paint come out of the small circle.

RedGiant People have lots of Particular presets to play with.  You'll probably never get a true photorealistic result in Particular, but here are some options:

The best way is to film real paint yourself!
Alternately, Footage Firm is selling some paint splash footage very cheap at the moment - About 20 HD clips for under 9 bucks, delivered.

  • Real Paintbrushes on Touch Screen

I'm considering an optical touch screen monitor for Windows 7 and CS4 (of course).  Has anyone used one yet?
If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B90_tqv-5vc
There are a number of optical multi-touch monitors and PCs out there that sense objects touching the screen using optical sensors and reflectors in the bezel around the edge.  It looks like ArtRage and Painter Essentials (as seen here) are able to sense the shape of a real paint brush touching the screen and create brush strokes accordingly.
Does anyone know if Photoshop does that as well?

I have used (and not used) a few different screen protectors on my Eris.  The first one (3-pack) i had was the one sold in the Verizon store when I bought my phone.  It worked pretty good but ended up peeling up in the corner.  I put on a new one from the pack and got all kinds of bubbles from dust and stuff and ruined it trying to fix it, and I don't remember what happened with the third one from the pack.  I next went with Zagg.  This one went on the phone really easy and looked pretty clean, but it was sticky to the touch and I didn't really like it.  It too ended peeling from the corner.  (I work in construction and keep my phone in my pocket so that may be the problem with peeling corners).  I next found a good deal on clarivue screen protectors online and ordered the mirror finish one.  While I loved the effect, it was very hard to see the screen in the sun and got very scratched up.  However the feel of that one was almost like using the phone naked.  I would probably go with a standard protector from that company next, but I have been rocking this bad boy bareback for 3-4 months now and, while there are some small scratches (again, I work in construction), its nothing major and normally I don't notice them.  So, to answer your question, I think any decent screen protector can be scratched with a key and the phone won't get hurt, and I'm sure most brands will have one that fits the Pro.  Check Best Buy or search online to find one that fits your needs.

  • Should I mix outside of garage band or inside

I would like to create some podcasts and I was thinking about using Garage Band to do it. My question is whether I should purchase a mixer and a compressor externally, and send nice sound into the computer, or are those same mixing tools and compressor inside Garage Band just as good?

Garageband's mixing is different in approach from a real mixer, and it doesn't do real-time mixing. I haven't used it for some years so I'm not familiar with the facilities in the present version. The best place to ask would be in the Garageband forum.

  • Audio Mixer Lagging Audio

    Hi All,
    I'm having a weird issue...
when i'm playing through the timeline and i affect a level in the audio mixer, regardless of codec, format, etc, the moment i let go of the level it causes the video to lag, then play without audio, then stop playing all together.
i'm running in safe rt, i'm not keyframing audio - just adjust levels for the entire track, i'm real time mixing only 8 channels, and am only playing with two mono tracks.
I haven't had this issue on my system or any other before but now it won't seem to go away.
    all help greatly appreciated!
    cheers.

Your profile lists an iMac in the first post and a PowerBook G4 in the second.
Neither of those machines could be described as optimized for real-time multitrack mixing.
So, which one are you working on?

  • How Do I Wrap Text Like the iOS Camera App?

Hello. I am in yearbook, and I have been challenged with designing the cover of the yearbook, and I have been having a few problems along the way. One of these problems is to wrap text. Specifically, I'm stuck on how I would wrap text like the iOS camera app on the bottom of the screen. The words seem like they are wrap around a 3D object to give it that effect, but I can't really tell. If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

The iPad is better for casual internet access then the iPod. All our kids have iPhones and they all use computers either Mac or PC for work and internet access.  When you have a Unix or Windows why would you want to touch an iOS device for work or serious internet access.  Apple mobile devices are convenient for casual use and grand kids don't get that dirty finger painting on them as they do using real paint. Nothing of real value is maintained on an iOS device.
Well...there's Photoshop Touch and Photoshop Mix as well as Lightroom Mobile. It could be argued that they're don't exactly mirror their desktop cousins, yes, but they weren't meant to be. They were meant as extensions to the desktop experience.  (e.g., Lightroom Mobile lets one work with the RAW images they have in their Lightroom desktop collections.)
The more powerful Windows tablets can run Photoshop desktop (like Photoshop CC) too.
