Duplicating video and wasting storage space???

Question

Here is the scenerio:
I have numerous old family movie tapes, but I will just talk about one. On this tape there are 6 different events (birthday, science fair, playing outside, etc). I have purchased an external 500GB hard drive to store footage directly onto. This is where I am not sure of what to do.
I am going to capture the whole tape, say 10 GB (I know that is not the correct amount, but its just hypothetical) worth of footage into one FCE project. Now, if I take every event and move the clips into a new and seperate project for each event and save them, since FCE is non-distructive editing, have I just created six 10GB files taking up 60 GB of space?
My other option is to capture, stop, and recapture each event seperatly. That way each project is 2 GB or 1 GB, totaling up to the 10GB of the total tape. Very time consuming as I would have to sit and watch the whole tape multiplied by dozens and dozens of tapes.

No. FCP will reference the same original clip for each project. But instead of creating a new project for each event, you could just use a new Sequence for each event within the same project.
