Duplication in iCal

I am really sick of the duplication that occurs in iCal when I change something.
When I switched to iPhone from Blackberry, all my repetitive events were duplicated 2-3-4-5-6-7- times.  I finally got all that cleaned up but now switched from Snow Lepopard to Lion 10.7.4  Now, EVERYTHING is duplicated.  Most things twice but others mpre than that.  Even worse, if I change an item, it affects all of them.  Therefore, if I delete one entry of a pair, the other one disappears a moment later too!  I gtried moving items out of the way - to a later time - and they BOTH moved!!
Why can't Apple get this right, and what should I do??

i figured it out myself:  The problem is not Lion.  It is iCloud.  iCloud AND Mobile Me were both synchronizing to my desktop.  To fix it, go to Calendars at the top left of the iCal window (not in the toolbar) and uncheck all calendars under MobileMe.

  • Duplication of iCal events

I know I did this to myself, but the duplication of my iCal calendar entries on my iTouch is driving me crazy. Apparently, I am syncing with my MobileMe account (which is absolutely fine). It also appears that each time I plug my iTouch into my Macbook I am syncing with it too. The result is that I have double listings for each calendar event. I'm getting really confused.
How do I turn off the syncing with my Macbook on iCal entries when I plug in my iTouch? I'm perfectly happy letting MobileMe do its thing. I only want one listing for each entry.

I realized that there are two sets of updated calendars on my iTouch. One comes from syncing directly to the computer with a WiFi connection. One comes from syncing through mobile me. I just made sure that only one of these syncing sources was selected and the duplication stopped.

  • Help....duplications of ical events on iPhone and only syncing from mac to iPhone?

    Hi,
Has anyone got any suggestions for fixing this problem.....
My iPhone syncs with my Mac perfectly via iTunes apart from iCal, which is giving me real grief! iCal on my mac is in perfect order and syncs events to my phone but my phone has duplicate and triplicate events and even events in different states of being edited. The iphone doesnt sync events made in it back to the mac either.
It syncs contacts etc. fine, just not iCal events.
Is there an easy way of fixing this or even totally reseting iCal on the Mac and iPhone so it clears this up? (obviously, I need to keep my calendar events though)
I've tried replacing the info on the phone, reseting the phone, changing to iCloud syncing and back again and I even upgraded to the iPhone 5 (which I was going to do anyway )
I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.8, iCal 4.0.4, iTunes 11.0.2 and I was on an iPhone 4 and now iPhone 5. It's been happening for two months now and it's getting really frustrating!
Thanks for any help in advance

This fixed my problem - finally!!

  • More Torch sync errors with Mac iCal

I have read the thread at the bottom of my post below and am having the following sync problems with iCal
1 Duplication of iCal entries in the Torch calendar
2 iCal entries with the all-day box checked appear as all-day items in the Torch calendar, but not with the all-day box ticked there
3 iCal entries in the 8 different calendars there are all transferred to a single Torch calenda (which is what I want and expect), except for iCal entries from 1 April 2014 to the present day in one calendar only. How can I get these to transfer too?
4 I have successfully merged various Torch calendars and now have almost all the calendar entries in a single Torch calendar, the gmail calendar which is set as the calendar to which all new entries go, but is not set to sync wirelessly. However there seems to be another calendar on the Torch just called the default calendar with about 400 entries in it. I do not know how to merge the gmail calendar and the default calendar or even whether I need to or not as I do not know how to work out what the 400 entries are, as opposed to the 3000 or so entries in the gmail calendar.
I have tried the various options using Blackberry Destop Software 2.4 including "Syncing All events" and "Replace all calendar events on this Blackberry device".
Two further questions on those options:
Should "Sync all events" leave the events in iCal and the Torch Calendar absolutely identical?
Does or should "Replace all events on this Blackberry device" delete all existing events on the Blackberry and then faithfully copy all events from iCal to the Blackberry?
Experience suggests the answer is no to both questions, but I suspect the answer should be yes.
I would be most grateful for any and all help on this.
I have Mac OS 10.8.5 and a Torch 9800 with OS Version 6 with Bundle 3170

  • Every time I sync my iCal computer with my iPhone 4 or iPad, duplicate entries are generated on both systems. What am I doing wrong or how can I avoid the duplications?

Every time I sync my iCal on my computer through iTunes with my iPhone 4 or iPad, duplicate entries are generated on both systems. What am I doing wrong or how can I avoid the duplications? I have been doing this for several years and this problem is a more recent issue, like in the last 6 months. I have been deleting the duplicate entries, on both systems, but some duplicates reappear through "general" entries that are connected to the correct color for a Calendar, but not the name. I am going nuts and wasting tons of hours trying to get the 3 calendars to sync without generating duplicate entries.

Choose one of the Calenders on ONE of the computers OR the MobileMe as the Master / correct account.
The REINITAILISE the data of MobileMe within preferences on the computer defining the datatransfer correctly (in the advanced box of preferences). The synchronise iphone contacts and calender directly on-line to MobileMe.
I posted a question on this today, and gave my own reply !

  • ICal Duplication Problem

I don't know where the problem lies - but have been getting killed by calendar duplicates (iCal). I began with around 10 calendars in the left sidebar - and each of those have multiplied like rabbits - to between 50-100 each. Maybe more. (I may have as many as 4000 calendars!) Crazy. Have been trying to delete the dupes in iCal - but to get rid of them all could literally take days. Is there a quick and easy way to get rid of all these dupe calendars?? A step by step guide - plus a way to prevent this from happening in the future.
I am syncing with iPhone, MobileMe and my Mac laptop.
I do not want to get rid of all of them because I have data in some. But most are empty - and clearly need to get rid of those.
I also have some duplicates in birthdays.
I have used the Dupe Deleter - but it is not useful for actually getting rid of the extra calendars.
Would love to hear what solutions you have found to work best. Thanks.

I don't have an answer, but I feel I've at least identified the problem re: duplication of subscribed events in iCal.
Prior to the latest update subscribed calendars were not considered Mobile Me calendars. In order to to have the events update automatically from the "cloud" you would have your touch or phone sync only with mobile me and subscribe to the calendar you want on both your iCal and on your touch or phone.
Now it seems that even though you can't VIEW a subscribed calendar through mobile me, it is treating subscribed calendars as a mobile me calendar - so calendars are showing up twice - once as a subscription through mobile me, and a second time through your touch or phone subscriptions.
The problem? You must physically open iCal and update in order for your cloud to be updated, and your events to show up properly.
The bottom line - for now cancel your subscriptions on your phone or touch, and only sync with mobile me. That solves the duplications. But it creates more work for you.

  • Can I sync my ical on iCloud AND put on iMac without duplication

I want keep my iCal in sync with my other devices and so I use the Cloud.
but I also want to keep my calendar on my iMac without it disappearing
after few months.... Diary per se that I can look back to .. Years..
Can I make an event on my iMac and the iCloud without duplication?

    Hey!
    It works again!
I've looked into the LIBRARY of my IMac and delted all Caches of ICal.
But beware that you don't delete things, which are important, like your calenders.
Library - Calenders - Calender Sync Changes - I've only delted all things in this folder. (Also in the Trash)
    Then I've restarted my Computer.
In the folder Calenders are also all Calenders saved, don't delete them, cause, what you've deleted is away!
Delete only the Things in the folder: Calender Sync Changes

  • More iOS5/Mac ical duplication/deletion woes

    More iCal duplication/deletion woes.
The Product list won't let me check more than one product, so here's a summary: MacBook Pro (OS X 10.6.8); iPhone 4S (iOS 5); iPad 2 (iOS 5)
As it stands at the moment, my iPad has three copies of everything*; the iPhone some of some stuff and none of others; and the Mac, my mainstay, is missing almost everything.
I turned on iCloud on the phone and pad.  They synched and immediatly duplicated stuff.  When I hooked either of them to the Mac, it added that calendar.
    I turned iCloud off.
Then there followed several attempts to delete all on the phone and retrieve from the Mac, but it keeps erasing the events on the Mac.
I'm usually very good at troubleshooting these kinds of things, but I cannot figure out what the iPhone is picking up or not picking up, and which calendar takes precedence for any one event.  It's completely confusing.
The last thing I tried was deleting anything that had duplicates on the iPhone, double-checking to make sure the original event was on the Mac, then syncing the phone.  It promptly erased all my original events on the Mac.
I'm afraid to delete the iCloud account because it might erase the iPad, and it has the last remaining threads of my original calendar.
What gives, Apple?  We're not used to this level of Microsoftian cruft!

All gone.  Every single event from the past 10 years, vanished.  And I don't know why.

  • Switching from Entourage to ical, mail, and address book- duplications?

I am tired of the slowness of Entourage and was thinking of switching to all of the native mac programs. Any suggestions or comments on whether this is a good idea or not?
Also, will all of my information be duplicated. I have about 3 gigs of information and I don't want to needlessly store it if I don't need to. Can I get some advice on where to find and extract that information from the entourage program so I am not eating up disc space unnecessarily.
    Thank you.

Three weeks ago I switched from Entourage and Palm Desktop to Apple mail, address book and ical. It was a tad painful because I ended up with a lot of duplicates as I had email and some contact info in Entourage and several thousand contacts in Palm Desktop.
However after a couple of solid nights sorting out the duplicates all the contact info for each person is now in one place.
Word of warning though when you are checking address book entries make sure you keep backing up the changes (File - Backup address book) because for some inexplicable reason a couple of times all the entries in address book vanished.
Also the check for duplicates option in address book might be great for some but for me it created contacts that had their addresses and phone numbers duplicated several times.
After initial teething problems (getting used to the different programs) I am now pretty happy with the changeover. I am ecstatic to not be seeing the constant Entourage error message of 'your database is damaged and needs to be rebuilt' which entourage kept throwing at me (even after repeated rebuilds).
I have a Palm Treo and Address Book and iCal sync fine with that as well (after installing the conduit).
You'll also find in mail that you can't do as much snazzy formatting as you could with Entourage (ie numbered lists and bullet points) but hopefully Apple will address that in later updates. In the meantime if I'm desperate for formatting I write the email in rtf and paste it across complete with bluet points.
Sorry to drone on but wanted to give you some moral support.
Oh by the way the entourage data is stored in Home folder - Documents - Microsoft User Data - Office 2004 Identities - main identity - database (almost need a compass and flashlight to find it). To be on the safe side burn it to a dvd just in case and then trash it and all it's little friends (rules, lists, signatures and the other main identity folders.
    Good luck

  • Duplication of events in Entourage/iCal from syncing iPhone

Okay, I am sick to death of this..... I have all the latest software - Entourage 8, OS 10.5.5, iPhone 2.2.... When I sync, iCal is not smart enough to recognize that events in Entourage are the same events... and Entourage is the same way, so I have ended up with as few as three and as many as 35 of the same event on a given day. I have changed every setting I can find. Also, although I've told iCal to delete tasks & events over 30 days old, it's not doing it.... so the cycle is perpetuated and I end up with MORE of the same event on my calendar.
does anyone have any idea why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? And why in God's name won't iPhone just sync with Entourage without the middle man of iCal and Address Book?
    Thank you!

Okay, here is what I've found.
First thought two disclaimers: 1. I am no tech support person - by any means. 2. I'm not even sure if I can recall how I corrected this since I had to go back and forth in so many settings so many times (spending 80 minutes on the phone with a tech support buddy of mine).
    But, here goes:
iPhone has to use iCal to sync with Entourage. It's a work around, it *****, but that's the way it goes.
So open iCal and make sure that there is only one Entourage calendar that has been created (there should be a list of calendars with check boxes on the left side), if there are two or more, delete the extra ones (right click, choose delete). I think that if you look in Entourage preferences and under Sync Preferences ever clicked 'sync to iCal' off and then on again, you may have created a second Entourage calendar in the process. When I was doing this, I accidently deleted the original Entourage calendar that I had and the one left over was actually empty - which may have helped me in this process to start 'fresh' and perhaps stop the constant loop of repopulating events between iCal and Entourage.
Make sure that in Entourage preferences under Sync Preferences 'sync to address book' and 'sync to iCal' are both clicked on.
In iSync Preferences, I had to reset the sync history there and start all over again then hit sync on iTunes.
Leave iCal preferences alone. They should be fine.
If ever told there is a conflict in your syncing the calenders, choose Entourage over iCal for all (if this is an option - at first for me, it wasn't and only iCal and iSync were listed as options until eventually, somehow, one popped up with the options of both iCal and Entourage).
If/when given the option to use Entourage as the primary source, iCal as the primary source, or merge the two, choosing merge should allow you to either update your phone or Entourage and have it populate the other. Choosing 'entourage' will only allow you to update entourage and have your phone sync, but not the other way around.
The worst part of all this? I've found no work around to delete the extra events listed in Entourage. You still have to delete the new ones by hand, one by one, even if the above fix works.
I can unfortunately pretty much guarantee that I've missed several key points, verbatim language, or even a modicum of logical steps in the above, but again I was going back and forth so many times that I can't even begin to tell you how best to solve this in a linear manner. I'm hoping that this provides a little direction, maybe you post a follow-up question (or eight), and then I can provide a few more tidbits to hopefully get you back out of this miserable loop of re-populating events.
    Good luck!

  • IPhone / iCal Duplication

I've been noticing that every time I make an iCal entry in my iPhone, it get's duplicated and I end up with double entries. I have a MobileMe account and I sync with iTunes. Do I need to sync my calendars with iTunes and MobileMe?
    Thanks

    Jake,
The settings currently selected in iTunes for my iPhone are, sync all contacts, sync iCal calendars, sync notes and sync mail accounts.
I sync Contacts/Calendars/Web Browser through MobileMe, and I have no checkmarks under those headings in iTunes>>Devices>My iPhone>Info tab when I connect the iPhone. Everything remains synced no matter what device/web interface I use. As I wrote earlier, there is this statement under each heading: "Your calendars/bookmarks/contacts are being synced with MobileMe over the air. You can also choose to sync calendars with this computer." For those synced (calendars/bookmarks/contacts)
items, in recognition of that statement, I see no need to check any of the boxes.
I haven't selected anything in the "advanced" category.
As long as all your data remains in sync, I see no reason to use "Advanced." The statement at the bottom of "Advanced" heading says: During the next sync only, iTunes will replace the selected information on this iPhone with information from this computer. If you do not want to do that, do not select "Advanced."
    Does this sound correct?
It sounds like syncing is now working as you expect. If that is a true then your settings must be correct for your setup.
    ;~)

  • Duplication of events in iCal

Every event I create in iCal ends up duplicated. On my iPhone, one of the two is completely uneditable/undeletable. This problem arose long before I had an iPhone or any other online/cloud-based syncing, so it's not simply a phone-to-computer problem, I suspect.

The general approach at this time is to ask if you've checked for any problematic fonts (all languages) with Apple's Font Book (look in the Applications folder). Find and remove all duplicates also.
Start there to be sure all fonts that are in play come out with a clean bill of health.
Don't hesisate to perform wholesale deletion of old and/or little used fonts - be skeptical of anything that has come from Office 2008, including those related to an Equation Editor installation.
By all means be sure any 3rd party apps AND plug-ins are Snow Leopard compatible.
An additional measure is to clear the existing font caches:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/139383/2009/03/fontcacheclear.html
That said, 10.6.2 release notes have this to say about fonts:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3874
    Fonts fixes provided for:
    • an issue with font spacing
    • an issue in which some Fonts are missing
    • font duplication issues
    • an issue with some PostScript Type 1 fonts not working properly
    Good luck in any case.
