Dups, sharing problems and lost files on NAS drive

I have been trying ot set up a "shared library" on a network storage drive.  The process has been painful to say the least I have over 17k music files and 400+ audio books.
My first problem was creating duplicate files when pointing a new PC to iTunes media files. After trying multiple 3rd party software product unsucessfullly I finally bite the bullet and used the iTunes feature display duplicates feature.  Because I did not want to delete compliations and greatest hits dups I had to browse dups by album and manally sort through over 7,000 songs. Took me a week to complet but I did it. The larger problem I am now facing is lost files.
I sucessfully had both compurter pointed to the same media folder and everything was working great until I accidentally selected all of my file (yes 17,000+) and proceeded to delete them. I was trying to deleted all of the songs in a album that was duplicates... I caught my error only after a few secs but I am afraid the damage is done. The weird part is the songs are still in the library in iTunes but I now have close to 5,000 missing files icons and when I look for the files in the album folder, they are missing.  What is more irritating is not every song from every album is missing. so If I reimport from the original cd (I hope they are not too scratched) it creates dups of the file that are already there and I have go through and do a manual dup clean up again!!!
Anyone have a thought as to where the missing files are (they are not in the trash under deleted files).
Anyone know of a better way to share a large library between mutliple computers and iOS devices without haveing to have multiple copies to sync(i.e. Home sharing).
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

Hi Rajnish,
As you mentioned "quota limit", it is set via FSRM or specific function on NAS?
Meanwhile could you confirm the number 185GB is accurate? Sometimes a part of used space is just not calculated. You can confirm with checking the total space on NAS locally.
If the number is correct and quota is set via FSRM, check if it is the Disk Quota which not re-calculated the released space. Try to clear the Quota setting and reconfig with 300GB limitation and see if issue still exists.

  • File sharing problems and horror story (nearly)

I use Leopard on a MacBook Pro, a MacBook and a iMac G4 800 MHz (unsupported model).
I have on the iMac and the MacBook Pro many users (the same ont he two machines) and I always use Fast User Switching.
I have had very few problems with Leopard until now; I like it even if there are some glitches or some new features which are not my cup of tea (hierarchical menus missing from the dock, stacks useless when there are many items, FireWall impossibilities (?) to open specific ports, Back to my Mac working on a Lan but not from outside until now, problems with a few apps (Parallels networking erratic), ...
    Now about File Sharing.
Let say my main account is user1 (Administrator), and I have another user2 also administrator, plus user3, user4 standard users.
On the iMac I activate File Sharing.
On the MacBookPro, as user1, if I connect to the iMac Server (using afp://IPaddress_of_theiMac/) I do NOT get the dialog
"Enter your user name and password to access file server YYY
Connect to server as Guest or as Registered User"
but I directly get the dialog
"Select the volumes you want to mount on YYY"
From this, if I select user1 it mounts with full read/write permissions which is normal. It appears that I am connected with my Apple account user1&mac.com (same as mentionned in the Account panel of System Preferences).
On the other hand, if I try to connect to the user2 account, I only get limited access although in the File Sharing Preferences, user1/iMac is mentionned with full Read/Write preferences for the Home Folder of user2.
What is very surprising is that if I log on the MacBook Pro as user2, or user 3 or user4, then connect to the iMac, I first get the dialog to enter a user name and a password. This gives me access with the correct full permissions on user1/iMac or user2/iMac using the corresponding user name/password pair; this is the usual behaviour which is missing when trying to connect from user1/MacBook Pro.
    Now for the Horror Story!
Trying to understand what was going on with the permissions of the user2/iMac account, I logged in to the iMac as user1, went to the Users folder and from there had a look on the informations about user2 home folder. In the lower part of the pannel, Sharing & Permissions says "You have no access" (which is normal) and this is followed by a table where users and permissions are listed. It seems user1 has Read and Write access in contradiction with the preceding phrase...
Anyway, I tried to modify these authorizations for user2 by clicking on the lock of the Information pannel and entering name and password of the administrator. Didn't go farther than that. By mistake, I hit Command-Delete and user2 was GONE from the list AND NOT ONLY from the list in the Information window! Using Fast User Switching and going to user2, nothing left on the Desktop and NO Home anymore.
In the System Preferences/Accounts panel, user2 was still mentionned.
In the Users folder, no user2 folder anymore.
Using once again Fast User Switching, I logged as user2 and got by magic an all new Home. Nothing left in Documents, Library or other user1 folders. Standard settings for icons, dock, etc.
My first move has been to use a very recent backup to restore everything (Thank you Mike Bombich from Copy Cloner!).
Once everything was back to normal, I had a look at the Trash from user1 and guess what, the Home folder of user2 was there, complete.
So now I am left with two questions
why is it I do not have the same dialogs when connecting from all the accounts although as far as I can see, configurations are the same?
why is it possible, from an Information pannel to delete the account of another user?
    Thank you all for comments!

  • Help Required - Ran "Repair Permissions" and lost files

I was having a few unknown errors with my computer lately... (iBook G4, Purchased November, 2005) I was unable to print, OS 9 was not loading, and everything was really slow.
When looking around in my computer (Only been using a Mac as long as I have had this computer), I found the disk utility and figured that would be a good place to start. After running the "Repair Permissions", I was pleased to see my computer was running quicker, and my programs were opening properly.
    Now...The problem....
I used to have a fairly cluttered desktop...and as of a few weeks ago, I took everything, and put it into a new folder in the Hard Drive. After the Repair was finished, I found that particular folder was deleted. My Trash was still empty, and when searching for that folder, sub folders, and programs there, they were no where to be found. Also, it appears it was only this folder (It was called Main Directory if that helps at all) that was deleted.
I have noticed, that a few of the programs deleted do have files in the "Cache" folder....But I don't know what good that does me.
Any help in recovering these lost files would be greatly appreciated
PS. Yes....I have learned now not to poke around and run utilities that I don't know what they really do...at least without backing up my hard drive.

    I'm sorry.....I made a mistake...I got the computer 2004.

  • File sharing problem because of file permissions mistake?

    Hi,
    this is my prob:
Can't connect via personal file sharing from other macs to my G5 (10.4.3).
Everything is hooked up properly, a G4 and a G3 powerbook exchange data this way without probs in my network.
The G5 shows up under the network icon, connects, but as soon as I try to click on the now mounted server-icon of the G5 it stalls and at the same time the system preferences pane on the G5 turns off Personal file sharing by itself. Firewall is off anyway BTW.
Thinking around the prob, I came to the conclusion that file permissions might be the reason and I tried to make a file permission 'first aid' run ...
but 'first aid' wouldn't do anything but tell me 'can't repair ... no packets found' ... uh?
    Any ideas?
    Thx a million
    Alex
    iMac G5 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I'll tell you some, but certainly not all, of the things I have tried.
    1. I connected an iBook directly to the eMac without a hub or router involved. Same result.
    2. I can even network an old 8.6 6500 and I get the the disk icon on the desktop and then I get a disconnect. And the "file sharing" check box is unchecked.
    3. I have gone in to the network using name of computer, IP addresses and all that those other methods. Same result.
    4. I have trashed various permissions and repaired permissions both off the system drive and off of the installer DVD.
Networking is useful for me but not critical to what I do.
I have resorted to putting an icon for a folder on my G4 on the desktop of the eMac so that if I need a file my secretary drops it in there, I work or it and then she drags it out and replaces the file on the eMac. Sort of a step above a "sneaker network". I think that the next up-grade might just fix the problem. John

  • I stored all my music on laptop, but then had a problem and lost music. If I try to sync ipod with laptop, will I be able to re-install music on laptop, or am I likely to lose all of it?

Can anyone help me, the technophobe, please?
I have stored music onto my laptop, in i-tunes, and then used this to sync to my ipod.
Unfortunately, a while ago, I had a problem with the laptop and lost all my i-tunes info, music, etc, including some purchased TV series.
My question is - if I attach my ipod to the laptop, can I reload all the music from it onto the laptop, or am I likely to lose all the music off my ipod too?
I think it is an ipod touch, but I am not 100% sure on this - it's about 18 months old, is all I can tell you.
Thank you to anyone who can offer advice.

  • Recovery partition and lost files g7-2254er Win 8

    Hello! (sorry for my english)
My friend have HP g7-2254er COW24EA#ACB. Hi is loses laptop and after that Windows don't loaded corectly.
I'm try make recovery but not success.
After that I make factory recovey from boot time and Windows start again but I lost recovery with all fotos.
In Computer Managment - Disk Managment I see paritition 30Gb (Primary Partition) with 14Gb used spase but without any files inside.
How I can recovery user files?

    Hi Dragon76ua,
Welcome to the HP Community, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I see that you had some issues doing a recovery. The missing 16GB from the primary partition is for the Windows operating system and those files are typically hidden you that a user can't accident deleted something. I have included a link here on how to see a hidden drive in Disk Management.
If you don't see a hidden drive then you have lost your other partition and unfortunately your photos are gone. A computer expert MIGHT be able to find some but it would cost quite a bit.

Lost Files but only in name.  I changed name in Finder.  How do I correct?

Use the relink function to point the application to the new files.

  • Music Files on NAS drive

I recently moved all my music to a NAS drive which I access wirelessly from iTunes on my laptop.
My iTunes Folder location is still on my laptop, so the xml/itl files there simply refer to my NAS drive (via a network share, G:\) for all it's song paths. I have "Keep iTunes Music Folder organised" and "Copy files to iTunes Music Folder ..." both turned OFF.
This setup works fine, except that I have serious performance issues when adding new songs (that I put on the NAS) to the iTunes library. It takes about a minute PER SONG! Setting this up first time took all night, but it's still unacceptably slow to add new albums.
Now here's the odd thing: if I add songs from my local C: drive it STILL takes ages, and seems to be accessing the NAS quite alot, but why? If I add songs from my C: drive with the NAS turned off, it's much faster. So what is it doing accessing all the OTHER song files when I add to the library?
Incidentally, I also had to downgrade from iTunes 7 to 6 since the gapless determination loop took several hours to run when involving songs on my NAS drive.
What can I do to alleviate my problems ? Any guidance gratefully received.

I have a network storage device too and I've used it for a long time. I have the iTunes library files (the XML and ITL) on the PC with the library on the NAS device. I have two issues, one of which is a huge pain...
    1. I would like to place the XML/ITL files on the NAS drive too, but I see no option for doing that. If I want to use the iTunes library on my other PC then I first have to copy the XML/ITL files to that PC, and then copy them back again at the end. That is annoying to have to do.
    2. Recently my iPod Video 60Gb caught fire and burned out. I replaced it with an iPod Video 80Gb and also upgraded iTunes to v7. Now, although the 80Gb machine only has exactly the same content that the 60Gb one had, with 57Gb spare, it now takes 48 hours to sync whereas before it took around 20 mins. I'm guessing that this is a factor down to iTunes v7 and am thinking of re-installing iTunes v6. However, I noticed when I installed v7 that it said it was converting my library - does this mean that v6 would no longer work with my existing library?
    Kind Regards
    Steve

  • Nas drive does not recalculating space after deleting files on Nas Drive??

    Greetings to Respected expert,
Actually we have configure Window server 20082 Storage server. We have NAS drive configured which have 300GB quota limit. The actual data in the folder is 185 GB but it shows only 15 GB free and shows a warning .Please assist me why NAS server does not re-calculate
the space after deleting files or does not leave space. Pardon me if I am not able to clear you my problems.this is very urgent for me.

  • Cannot delete file on NAS Drive

    Hello,
I was creating a backup of the program VLC on my NAS drive. When copying the file to the drive, it gave an error (which I now cannot recall completely... something about cannot copy certain files). When I went to try and delete the corrupted file, it gave me error: "the operation cannot be completed because the item "lib" is in use". I've tried a lot to delete:
    -restart computer/NAS drive
-try to delete on another MAC
    -try to delete on Windows
-hold option delete, ****, command, etc.
Nothing seems to work. How can I delete this file? Thanks!

What your going to need to do is c boot and install OS X (10.6) from the disk, onto a blank external drive (format the drive first in Disk Utility: GUID OS X Extended (J))
Once 10.6 is installed, hold the option key and boot from the 10.6 external drive, go through setup with your same user name, and Software Update to 10.6.8
Then download and install DataRescue  ($99) onto the external 10.6 drive and attach another blank external GUID OS X extended formatted drive and run DataRescue to recover your files to that drive. There will be a lot.
Data Rescue will read the 1's and 0's of the files themselves regardless of what your partition map says, before they are overwritten.
After that's done, access the second external drive and pick though the files to recover.
Once you have gotten all your data, you need to install all your third party programs on the external drive from original sources and update. Then move your files you've recovered to it.
Once that' is all done, erase one drive and download Winclone, and clone the Bootcamp Windows to the empty drive.
Then use Disk Utility to Erase with Zero the entire internal drive of all partitions and everything. (select the drive makers name and size on the far left) Format GUID OS x Extended Journaled like always.
Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the 10.6.8 external drive to the internal drive, disconnect the external drive and boot from the internal drive and then install Lion on the internal drive. You can hold option key, click on Purchases to download Lion again.
Use Bootcamp to set up Windows partition, then follow Winclones directions to clone Windows back into the Bootcamp partition.

  • Thinking about storing my iPhoto and iTunes on a NAS Drive

    Hi,
I am thinking about buying a LaCie Network Space MAX NAS Drive and I just wanted to know if anyone else is using one and can provide some insights or advice. I have a the following set up:
    - Macbook pro
    - Macbook air
    - Apple TV
    - Airtport Extreme
    - 2 x iPhones
    - iPhoto album over 150Gb
    - iTunes library over 800Gb
I have been running the iPhoto and iTunes off a 1.5tb USB WD external hard drive attached to the Airport USB. It has been working but has been slow but a few days ago the drive became corrupt. I have been able to recover the data but I am now looking at other options for storing iPhoto and iTunes externally.
I can't help but think I am not the only person in this situation. I find managing these large data libraries really annoying and I think apple should be offering a better solution to this problem. I think most peoples' iTunes and iPhoto libraries are too big or getting too big to run on a portable computer's internal hard drive. Anyway that is my moan for this post.
Does anyone have any ideas on a good set up for this situation? And if you are using a LaCie Network Space MAX drive is it working for you?

Same exact problem in my case... thinking same Lacie Network Space could help...
    Any idea ?

  • Lost Files after Hard Drive Backup

    Hello there,
i lost all my files from the external hard drive after backup it. Is there any solution to recover the disappeared files on my macbook pro? Please give me some advise.
    Thank you very much!

Do you mean that the data was on the external hard drive (and only there), and then you reformatted that drive to have it in Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) format? Did you not read the warnings that the data would be erased? Is there an iPod or iOS device that holds some of this data? Time Machine? You can download your past purchases from the iTunes store, but the chances of recovering anything from a reformatted drive are slim to none.
Software such as this: http://www.freemacrecovery.net/how-to-unformat-mac-hard-drive-after-accidental-f ormatting may give an indication if there is data that can be recovered. Although the download is free you'll likely need to pay before you can actually recover data. I've no idea if this particular software is any good, or represents good value. You should make your own search.

  • Retrieving a lost file from iCloud drive

I was saving files from documents folder onto iCloud drive and deleted other files in iCloud drive in the process, which i need to get back. Is there a way to retrieve the file i had saved in iCloud drive which is now gone.  I don't have time machine set up, New laptop.

If you did not make a backup the files and you deleted them from iCloud Drive, they are gone, unless you did not yet empty the Tras on your Mac. Have you checked the Trash in the Dock?
If you deleted them completely, you can only try data recovery software like Disk Drill, but that will be expensive.
If you are syncing another Mac with iCloud, they documents may still be on this Mac, if it has not been connected to the Internet and the changes had not yet been synced to that Mac.

  • Documents and media files on separate drive

How do I set up my MacPro so my documents and media files (iTunes library, iPhoto library, Movies) are on a separate drive from my system/startup drive?

You can move the "Documents" folder to another drive. There is nothing special about any folders, but some applications may expect them to be in certain places, and might recreate them if they are not there. File locations are up to the individual applications. Usually you can set things in the preferences.
