Durability Is Questionable - Moto X

This phone is amazing, but the durability they advertize is non-existent.  I had this phone for three weeks and loved it, but then one drop from my lap to a carpeted floor has rendered the touchscreen completely inoperable.  It dropped on it's side and the screen seems to have cracked on the inside.  Just a heads up that though this phone is amazing, I find it less durable than an iPhone which is pretty miserable IMO.
Still might be a worthwhile purchase maybe at $99, but certainly not $199 considering it only costs $230 to build.  I also bet you'll see a TON of refurb offers for $49 next spring/summer.
How's your Moto X reacted to small drops?

Sure, I'm just pointing out that the manufacturing cost of this phone is considerably lower than others in the product category.  That leads me to believe they'll be willing to knock it down to $99 in short order.

  • Durable subscriber question

    Hi,
              wls 8.1.4.
              Scenario: Durable subscriber (DS) connects to a jms distributed topic member T1.
              DS gets disconnected and has a backlog of messages.
              DS connects to jms distributed topic member T2 (on a different jms/managed server) (using the same client-id it had used when connecting to T1).
              Looks like the subscription starts afresh and the backlog (from T1) is lost.
              Is this the expected behavior. Any way we can make this DS reconnect carry forward the state (backlog) as well.
              Thanx,

    Examples that comes with the O'Reilly book on the subject can be found at http://examples.oreilly.com/javmesser
    In there you can find a couple of examples on durable subscriptions.

  • Durable subscribers questions

    Hello,
              I am building an application that has two WebLogic servers
              communicating certain information between them using JMS. I am using
              WebLogics implementation of JMS including destinations and messaging
              bridges.
              I am experiencing some problems.
              Server 1 takes files and puts them in a Stream Message and publishes
              them to a topic as shown here:
              Context context = new InitialContext();
              TopicConnectionFactory topicFactory = (TopicConnectionFactory)
              context.lookup(sourceDescriptor.getConnectionFactory());
              connection = topicFactory.createTopicConnection();
              session = connection.createTopicSession(false,
              Session.CLIENT_ACKNOWLEDGE);
              Topic topic = (Topic)
              context.lookup(sourceDescriptor.getTopicJNDIName());
              TopicPublisher publisher = session.createPublisher(topic);
              publisher.setDeliveryMode(DeliveryMode.PERSISTENT);
              StreamMessage message = session.createStreamMessage();
              for (int i = 0; i < files.length; i++)
              Loop through reading a set of files into the StreamMessage publishing
              each.
              publisher.publish(message);
              Topic config.xml
              <JMSTopic JNDIName="topic/topicName"
              Name="Topic Name" StoreEnabled="default"/>

              DestinationJNDIName="topic/topicName"
              DestinationType="Topic" Name="Topic Source Name"/>
              Messaging Bridge config.xml
              <MessagingBridge
              Name="The Bridge"
              QOSDegradationAllowed="true" QualityOfService="Duplicate-okay"
              SourceDestination="Topic Source Name"
              TargetDestination="Queue Destination Name" Targets="server1"/>
              Connection Factory
              <JMSConnectionFactory JNDIName="ConnectionFactory"
              Name="Server1 Connection Factory" Targets="server1"/>
              All settings in WebLogic are default for the configuration of this as
              far as I know.
              The bridge is using Duplicate Ok QOS at this point.
              This works like a charm as long as server which has the destination
              queue is up and running and has received messages in the past.
              The first problem is the first set of messesages are sent to the Queue
              on Server 2 but the MDB does not pick them up. I have left it running
              for an hour and these messages sit in the pending state for the
              monitoring of the Queue. In order to get this first set of messages
              to be processed I have to restart Server 2 at which point the initial
              messages are processed. Any subsequent messages are processed by the
              MDB immediately upon delivery. What is the cause of this and is there
              any way around having to restart after the first messages are received
              creating the file in the message store? Does this have anything to do
              with the fact that there is no file in the message store until the
              first messages are received and thus the MDB is not looking since
              there was nothing there on start up? This seems very odd....
              The second problem has to do with durability. I start Server 1 and it
              waits for a finish file and when it sees it it takes the files and
              puts them on the topic as described. As long as Server 2 is up and
              running at that time everything is fine. If However Server 2 is not
              running at that moment and is started at a later time then the
              messages seem to be lost. What could cause this? Is there any way I
              can visually see that the message is being held on Server 1? The
              bridge from this topic on Server 1 to the queue on Server 2 is
              configured on Sever 1 and you can see that it is working when Server 2
              is not running due to the connection refused messages the bridge
              throws. Is the bridge accepting the messages from the topic enough
              for the topic to decide it is done with them and delete them? Could
              the acknowledgement from the queue on another bridge for the same
              topic be confusing the topic and deleteing the message before all
              subscribers get it? This is a big issue since it seems that durabilty
              is only guarenteed when both servers are running and a message is
              created.
              Any help on this would be appreciated...If you wouldn't mind cutting
              and pasting any responses to my email as well it would be appreciated
              as I use google for groups and it has a long turn around.
              TIA...

    Hi Kartheek,
    Once we create a TOPIC in NWA.In durable subscribers tab subscription ID and Subscription name will be automatically created once you publish the message in to TOPIC.
    check in NWA-->jms server configuration-->durable subscribers.
    thanks

  • Topic with Durable Subscription Questions...

              Hello all,
              The scenario: WL 7.0 - sp2, a clustered environment. I have a JMS Topic which
              has one MsgBean that is Durable and one MsgBean that is non-durable consuming
              messages off this Topic. Both MsgBeans are deployed on all machines in the cluster,
              and the server (which contains the topic) is targetted to one machine.
              The issue that I am experiencing is that the DurableMsgBean can not connect to
              the jms topic, but the non-durable one gets its messages all the time.
              Any ideas/suggestions?
              C.

    Hi,
              The durable subscriber name is derived from the descriptor's ejb name,
              and only one consumer may attach to a particular durable subscription
              at a time. I've attached some notes that should help you out, please
              excuse the jumbled formatting.
              Let me know if this helps,
              Tom, BEA
              The durable subscription is uniquely identified within a cluster by a
              combination of "connection-id" and "subscription-id". Only one active
              connection may use a particular "connection-id" within a WebLogic cluster.
              The durable subscription id, which must be unique on its topic, comes from:
              1) <jms-client-id>MyClientID</jms-client-id>
              (the weblogic dtd)
              2) if (1) is not set then the client-id
              comes from the ejb name.
              The connection id comes from:
              1) The "ClientId" attribute configured on the WebLogic
              connection factory.
              This defaults to null. Note that if the ClientId is set on
              a connection
              factory, only one connection created by the factory
              may be active at a time.
              2) If (1) is not set, then, as with the subscriber-id,
              the connection-id is derived from jms-client-id descriptor attribute:
              <jms-client-id>MyClientID</jms-client-id>
              (the weblogic dtd)
              3) If (1) and (2) are not set, then, as with the subscriber-id,
              the connection-id is derived from the ejb name.
              Work-around:
              A) Create a custom connection-factory for each server:
              1) configure "JNDIName" to the same value across all servers
              ("myMDBCF" in this example)
              2) configure "ClientId" to a unique value per server
              3) enable "UserTransactionsEnabled"
              4) enable "XAConnectionFactoryEnabled"
              5) set "AcknowledgePolicy" to "ACKNOWLEDGE_PREVIOUS"
              6) target the CF at a single WebLogic server
              (Number 5 is required for non-transactional topic MDBs)
              B) In the MDB's weblogic-ejb-jar.xml descriptor, set the MDB's
              connection factory to the JNDI name of the custom connection factories
              configured in (A). Optionally, also specify the subscriber-id via the
              jms-client-id attribute.
              <weblogic-ejb-jar>
              <weblogic-enterprise-bean>
              <ejb-name>exampleBean</ejb-name>
              <message-driven-descriptor>
              <connection-factory-jndi-name>myMDBCF</connection-factory-jndi-name>
              <jms-client-id>myClientID</jms-client-id>
              </message-driven-descriptor>
              </weblogic-enterprise-bean>
              </weblogic-ejb-jar>
              C) Target the application at the same servers that have the custom
              connection factories targeted at them.
              Notes/Limitations:
              1) If the MDB is moved from one server to another, the MDB's
              corresponding connection-factory must be moved with it.
              2) This work-around will not work if the destination is not in the same
              cluster as the MDB. (The MDB can not use the local connection factory,
              which
              contains the connection-id, as connection factories do not work unless they
              are in the same cluster as the destination.)
              3) This work-around will not work for non-WebLogic JMS topics.

  • A question regarding Synchronous, Pub-Sub non-durable model

              Scenario:
              Non-durable, publish-subscribe, syncronous model.
              Publisher1 and Publisher2 both post messages to a Topic at the same time. How to
              design the non durable Subscribers that would be able to obtain both these messages
              in the same thread?
              e.g. if i in my program I create 2 subscribers, with selectors configured for the
              2 different messages...
              program start
              1. create sub1 using selector1 for topic1
              2. create sub2 using selector2 for topic1
              3. sub1.receive(timeout)
              4. sub2.receive(timeout)
              5. further processing using both the obtained messages
              6. program end.
              In the above case, if messages arrive at the same time in the topic, only sub1 will
              be able to get the message, as sub2 won't be active at that time.
              Is there anyway to acheive this considering Synchronous, Pub-Sub non-durable model
              is to be used?
              Many thanks...

              Thanks for the response.
              Is a subscriber active the moment it is created?
              e.g. objSub=tsession.createSubscriber(topic,strMessSelector,true);
              or it is said to be active when we call
              objSub.receive() (in case of synchronous subscriber)

  • Moto G purchasing question

    After losing my current phone, which I bought just this past summer on a two year contract, is it possible to transfer that contract and cellular service to a Moto G?  I was hoping to buy it as a cheap placeholder until my two year contract is up (don't want to pay the early termination fee), however, the Verizon website seemed to label it as prepaid.  Is there some sort of artificial restriction that is placed on the Moto G to prevent it from being activated on a postpaid plan?

    It's a prepaid phone. I believe you have to have it on pre-paid for 6 months before it can be transferred to post paid. Also remember even if you could use it, it's 3G only. Verizon has a  promo going on thru the 30th where you can upgrade early using their Edge plan.
    What is Early Edge Open Enrollment?
    Early Edge Open Enrollment is a limited-time option to participate in the Verizon Edge program. You can get your choice of the latest smartphone sooner than you would under a traditional 2-yr contract.
    If you’ve had your current phone since 11/13/13, you may be eligible to purchase a 4G LTE smartphone through the Verizon Edge program. You’ll pay for your phone in monthly payments.
    To be eligible for Early Edge, you must meet all the following:
    Be eligible for Verizon Edge
    Have had your phone since 11/13/13 or longer
    Return your phone in good working condition*
    The Early Edge Open Enrollment option will be available 2/13/14 - 4/30/14.

  • Moto G Prepaid Phone Question

    I am very interested in getting the Moto G by Motorola as my next phone.  I have always had contract phones so switching to a no contract phone is new to me.  On the Moto G page it says "This phone may only be used with Verizon Wireless Prepaid service for the first 6 months after activation."  I'm a bit confused on what this means.  Does it mean that this phone can only be used as a prepaid phone for 6 months, then you are forced to get into a contract?  'Cause that is really what it sounds like and that doesn't make sense to me.  Or does it mean that after 6 months, you have the option of having it as a prepaid phone or a contract phone?  If anyone could give me some insight on this, it would be very much appreciated.

    After six months on a prepaid plan, the phone is eligible to be activated on a postpaid account. It can be used on the prepaid plans for as long as you want.

  • IPod Touch screen durability question

    Hi there,
    I'm currently trying to decide between an 8GB iPod Nano and an 8GB iPod Touch and I was wondering if some of you could share information about the screen durability of your new iPod Touches.
    I love the iPod line of MP3 players, and after my last iPod died from rough handling I've decided that I want my next iPod to use flash memory, which limits me to the Nano and the Touch. I'm also very interested in watching video on my iPod since I have a 45 minute commute on a train every day.
    I have heard that the plastic over the screen on the Nano is similar to the plastic of the old iPods, and as such can be scratch-prone, but that the screen on the Touch is a much more scratch-resistant glass. How have the screens on your iPod Touches held up so far to regular use?
    Thanks!

    Even though the touch has a scratch resistance glass, it can still get scratched, I know someone here who posted way back managed to get their screen scratched, and a deep one too. it depends what you used and how hard it was hit, I'd still get a screen protector for it, I got the invisible shield for it and the touch still works, and it still senses my finger.
    If you plan on getting the touch, i'd get a 16 GB with just spending 100 buck more. But if your budget only limits you to get an 8 GB then get the 8 GB touch. One thing I like about touch, is yes, the wi-fi feature (I gotta say, it's awesome, you can view e-mails, surf the web, do anything on the web on the go), I like movies in Widescreen and you can watch movies in Widescreen view. I'd say get an iPod touch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Selling a Moto Droid question......

    If  I sell my Moto Droid can anyone buy it and activate it even tho I am still under contract? Would the phone be free and clear for whoever buys it?

    they'll have to have a data plan or i don't believe verizon will let them activate it. if they have the $29.99 plan (or are willing to add it) then you should be able to just go into the store and have them active it. if the phone will be disconnected and you have no past due balances or any other issues with vzn (and i'm assuming it's not stolen or been reported as lost), then you can advertise it as a moto droid with a "clean esn." this will let buyers know that they'll have no problems activating it. i think you can even get the esn # (either off the phone or from zvn) so a potetial buyer can verify with verizon that it's clean.

  • I have so many questions but I guess I can only ask a 4G one here-.

    Hello-
    I have a basic MOTO phone that was free when I signed up with Verizon 3 years ago and after I wanted internet access when I was traveling I purchased the Mifi2200.  Now, when I sign in it says I can have $30 for the New Every Two for the phone (I do not understand how I can get a decent phone for $30, but at least I have something since I hear they are getting rid of the New Every Two.  Moreover the MiFi 2200 account is due for the New Every Two and a product upgrade (whatever that means) too.  I heard the New Every Two amounts are going away so I better use them (They might have already gone away)
    In looking for a smartphone or an iPhone (I have never had either or text messaging or a phone that can hook up to the internet),  but my main questions here is about this 4G.  I will just spell the questions out and hopefully some should will feel sorry for a person like me who does not understand most of the techie stuff and really has a hard time using it.  But here are my questions.
    1. What is the difference between 4G and 4G LTE?
    2. Why are they selling 4G USB devices, phones, notebooks, etc. if the 4G (I will use 4G to mean both 4G and 4GLTE since I assume the 4G LTE is  a better service) network is in such a small area of the country besides every airport?  When I read about 4G devices to surf the internet, I keep reading posts that say if you have a 4G device and 4G is not available or you are traveling and going in and out of 4G areas, that the connection is dropped if you were hooked up with 4G and suddenly entered a 3G area without 4G.  This seems like a major hassle and I am wondering if this is true?
    3. If I purchase a 4G device will it automatically connect to the 4G network if it is available or do I have to know if it is available or not and connect a different way depending on if 4G or 3G is available?
    4. does anybody know (I have asked Verizon and have been told no, but I seem to get random answers for most questions I ask Verizon employees) if 4G phones are avalable and if so does the user have the same problem when they are on a call and go in and out of 4G/3G areas?  (as far as calls being dropped or can the device switch automatically without any trouble)?
    5. If you were interested in a 4G or 4G LTE device and you did not have 4G on your area would you wait until 4G is available in your area or would you go ahead and get the smartphone, data device, or whatever you need now and just use it and wait until the 4g network is up in your area?
    thanks a ton for any help.  I really appreciate it.  I am not sure of I should use the New Every Two for the MIFi2200 and get a 4G usb device for my macBook Pro and use my new Every Two and product upgrade for either a smartphone or an iphone and if you think I should get the iPhone should I get the one from Apple or the one from Verizon, or does it even matter?  I keep reading that Verizon's iPhone which uses something like CDME is nowhere near as good as ATT's service which can take talking on the phone and looking up something on the internet at the same time, and other things that I did not understand.
    If you would not recommend I get the iPhone, what are some of the good smart phones that have apps available and are relatively easy to use?
    (Not sure why but when I clicked "Post" the Message flashed and this appeared in red at the bottom; "Your post has been changed because invalid HTML was found in the message body. The invalid HTML has been removed.")

    OOOKAAAAYY;   Your devices are over my head. The smart guys, Verizon & others, should be on the job tomorrow -Monday and you'll get better feedback.
    I noticed that large parts of Salt Lake City are 4G.    Zero in on the coverage map   (refresh "4G data") and you'll see where you sit.
    The only person I know who stays connected while traveling (or tries to)  is Toughbook.    I just re-connect the best I can where ever I am.
    A little confusion:  The 4g network  -see map-  is "4G here,  3G everywhere else"
                                     The "old" usb760 3G network, though still in place, is 3G everywhere 4G nowhere.
                                      The hardware(s)  match two entirely different networks.   You've gotta buy all new hardware to go 4G.
                                      and, unless you want to pay for two plans, your old stuff is useless.   I can't whip out my old USB760 and connect with it anymore.  It's a Whole new game.   I'm committed.
    I like thePantech when I'm in 4G, but sucksfor me when I in the 3G hinterlands.   The other hardware choice is the LG VL600
    I don't know anything about the phones, but my earlier comment about Verizon rumors not helping comes largly from several discussions raging like this one.           Happy Hunting.

  • Questions on heat, hard drive, graphics 1.5GHz

    I am considering a new Powerbook 12 inch to replace the 15 inch TiBook I just traded in at Powermax -- stretching the budget to the current 15 is tough, especially when there still seem to be at least some firmware questions if not hardware -- and the small 12 is tempting. Whatever it is, it has to be a Mac, and due to monitor spanning, it has to be a Powerbook.
    So some questions.
    How is the 12 inch these days for heat? Obviously heavy hard drive activity (such as all the demos they run on it in the Apple Store) will heat up the left side wrist rest given where the hard drive is, but how is it for typing on in actual day-to-day use?
    Anyone tried the 100GB 5400RPM BTO? Of course the 80GB 5400 is standard, but is there any significant speed difference between the two (denser platters usually mean faster transfers).
    How about the Nvidia 5200 graphics card? Any bottlenecks I should be aware of compared to a Radeon 9550/9600/9700?
    And, any difference in durability compared to the 15?
    Lastly, how about the display? They seem a bit dim in the store, but they also seem like they have a jiggered stock profile. How about when you hardware profile it properly (I have a ColorVision Spyder2Pro)?

    As far as video chipsets go, a 5200 is not going to run with the ATi 9600 or better in terms of fps for the gpu, I'm not sure about the 9550. The 9600XT, and I'm using one in a desktop, roughly runs with the 5700 Ultra and a little behind the 5900 in nvidia's lineup. I'd say as far as notebook gpu's go, all those gpu's are dated and are in need of revising. The 5200 is a couple years old and so are the ATi gpu's, that is for desktops. But when you look @ PB specs, a 9700 128 MB video vs 64 MB FX5200, the 9700 is way ahead.

  • Questions about message logging and topic TTL

    We're in the final stages of testing our application. Basically a producer application is sending small, non-persistent messages once every 10 seconds and once every second to an auto-created topic. The consumer application(s) listening are then doing data display of this 1 second and 10 second data.
    Testing the client we noticed it complained of a single 10 second message not being received. We verified that the message was sent by the producer. My question is whether there is a logging setting on the IMQ server that could be used to log the receipt and delivery of every message, perhaps by JMSMessageID to a particular topic? The only idea we could think of is to use 'imqcmd metrics' to track the number of messages in/out, but this isn't as useful for us.
    Any ideas you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

    imqbrokerd does not support tracing at this level, so metrics is probably the best approach for now.
    If a subscriber is not getting a message it is usually because of one of the following:
    1. The message is expiring. If you are using message expiration make sure the clocks are synchronized between the clients and the server. imqbrokerd will log a message when it has expired messages.
    2. The subscriber was down when the message was produced (and it is not a durable subscriber).
    3. You have set a size limit on the destination or system wide that is resulting in messages being shedded as specified by the limit behavior.
    With non-persistent messages you can get an additional level of reliability by setting the following ConnectionFactory property to true:
    ConnectionConfiguration.imqAckOnProducethis adds a handshake between the server and client when a message is sent and provides a mechanism for imqbrokerd to propogate additional message production errors back to the client.

  • Apple noob ipad2? - many questions, can you help?

    hi,  i have many, many questions.  if you could answer at least a couple and let someone else answer others, i would be so grateful!  thank you!
    i'd like to get an ipad 2.  i'm very crippled, disabled, and desperately in need of a *good* tablet.  since i am very very poor, it will be nearly impossible for me to do this.  first of all, is there any way for someone like me to obtain a new ipad;  a contest, a charity, anything like that?  i hate to ask, but i'm nearly quadriplegic and will be completely at some point.  i've tried some cheap tablet pcs and they were all horrible and returned.  i cannot afford the $329 for the cheapest ipad 2, so i surely cannot afford one w/ more storage.  i need to know if ipads are equipped w/ removable storage, such as a micro or standard SD card.  are they?  i would have to get the cheapest ipad 2 which i believe has 16gb of storage.  i'd want to be able to store onto an SD (or other) media or i will eventually fill up the space.
    i do see that it has bluetooth.  can i transfer apple files to a pc via bluetooth?  is that possible since my old, old, defunct, barely functional pc is running win7?  any pc i'd transfer to would be MS windows.  i will always save in a windows compatible format.  i just do not know if i can transfer files from apple to pc, as well as if i can transfer via bluetooth from apple to pc?
    i'm concerned about having to pay for apps.  i live way below the poverty line and have no friends or family to assist w/ anything - not that i would dare ask!  i'm on my own and this would be a once in a lifetime purchase that would have to last me "forever".  i heard an ipad user say something about the first gen ipad becoming "obsolete" and that you cannot upgrade an ipad;  you have to buy a new one.  is that correct?  if i could get an ipad 2 (i'd *love* the retina display but cannot afford it - so just the standard ipad 2), will it be useless at some point - a few years from now?
    are there many *free* apps?  such as, can i install a Netflix app to watch on the tablet for free?  or listen to a free radio app?  or is there a cost for *every* app?  forgive me, i have limited use of my neck and cannot hold my head up or use my arms much, so this post is all i can do.  i cannot go searching through available apps.
    bc of my physical disabilities, i am desperately in need of something extremely lightweight that will last me a very long time.  in addition to the cost of apps, are there any other operating costs, other than my internet service, for which i need to be aware of before diving into All Things Apple?
    if there are any charities or foundations that assist people, disabled or not, in obtaining an ipad 2, please give me link(s) and/or info.  due to my disablities and financial situation, a very good tablet is my only option.  i cannot sit up vertically at all sometimes, or if i can, for only a limited time.  i cannot turn my head to view a monitor.  ergo, i need something that can be used in a very reclined position.  that rules out everything but tablets.
    i *think* that SIRI would be a good way to do things via voice recognition.  i'm not sure of "her" capabilities, however.  is there voice recognition accessibility built into iOS?  i cannot always use my arms, so i need to be able to speak to do communications.  some of my doctors *only* communicate via their secure email service.  they will not accept calls to the nurses at all.  this is a huge problem for someone that cannot look at the screen due to its position, or type the email.  i really need voice recognition so i can communicate!  if it's not built into iOS, is it an app?  what price?
    i would also need the smart cover and a keyboard.  i have to have the stand, as i am unable to hold the ipad up - remember that i am in a reclined position at all times.  i would likely put the ipad w/ the cover as a stand on my knees (bent and upward), and then need a keyboard on my abdomen.  are the keyboards wired or wireless?  if wired, how long is the cord?  i would need about 2.5-3' in length to do this.
    i have an HDTV that was a gift (THANKS!).  does the ipad 2 come w/ a standard HDMI or other connection cord to connect directly to the tv?  or does one need to purchase "apple tv" or some other type unit to view and use on the tv screen?  (in which case, a keyboard w/ cord would not work, would a wireless keyboard work about 8-10' away?).
    if my old printer works, i will have to connect it to the old pc - running windows.  will i still be able to print w/ airprint, even tho the printer is connected to a windows pc?  very much need ability to print, especially for medical and financial concerns.  do not have wifi printer and cannot afford one.  will it work?
    can i use my google account and its settings - will apple sync w/ chrome?
    how much is the warranty and for how long may i purchase it for?  I would want the longest one.  i was able to see that it said you can make 2 warranty claims.  is this correct?
    can i upgrade iOS?  is there a charge for it, as in windows?  can i use other programs such as photoscape (freeware vr of photoshop) or another browser (such as dolphin)?
    does it have GPS?  may i use it at no charge?  i'm homebound, so this is not a big issue, but if i survive the many major surgeries, i *hope* i can get out again!
    i really need some help.  i cannot communicate with people!  i'm new to apple and do not know anything about these things.  please forgive me for the very lengthy post and so many questions.  any and all information would be quite helpful!  please remember that i *cannot* go searching around sites to find this information.  this post alone has taken over 2 days to write.
    thank you again, and i appreciate your time!

    thank you so much IIP   glad to hear someone vouch for a refurb.  youre right, i cannot afford anything apple.  i was hoping to find a foundation that helps disabled ppl that need to communicate.  i really REALLY need to know if there's voice recognition in the iOS, or even a good free app....  idk.  as you said, i looked at refurbs and even the same model as the cheapest new ipad 2 was $400.  :/  only diff i could see *i think* was that it was wifi and cellular - and i only need wifi.  perhaps the reason the refurb was as much as the new w/ only wifi?
    prob w/ laptop pc - cannot use arms much, esp to pick up a laptop, and cannot carry one around.  even an ultrabook (which is a trademark) or other light weight is over 3lbs and i cannot do that.  i can barely do 8oz (for a drink).  ergo laptops are out.  ultras / light weights are way too expensive.  they also come w/ friggin win8.  the starting range of those are much higher than the starting range of ipad.
    i guess i'll have to look into a samsung galaxy 2 tablet, android, upgradeable, if i cannot find a way to get the ipad.  advantage of tablet pc over apple / ipad is big time w/ warranty.  so that is my 2nd choice, since the price just went down tonite actually at my WM.  (no lectures!  i have to buy there, cannot afford local biz's!)
    i'm using a laptop now, old one, borrowed, win xp.  i cannot move it at all.  it's soooo heavy!  i've not weighed it but would not be surprised if over 5lbs.  ergo my posts take forever to write and it's very hard for me as i cannot be in a reclining position to use it.  due to my spinal diseases, it's complicated.  i have to move around at least every 20-30min while awake, or 45-60min while trying to sleep.  not to be confused w/ mobility or ability to hold head upright/ at all, or use of arms.  spinal disease is entire spine now.  just found out that peachy news recently.
    so you see a laptop wont work.  i've spent months and months trying to find a laptop that i *could* use.  not possible.
    pro's of tablet pc:  less than 1/2 the price, and no q's asked, no charge, 2-3 yr drop/spill/anything accident or manufacturing defect.  will get one w/ android, upgradeable.  tons of free apps.
    cons:  much less performance, and nothing near the quality of ipad in any way.  even the cases are not as durable as ipad.  wont get anything w/ windows on it, so have to make sure it's an android.  many android models *do not* have VR (voice recognition) installed.  hard to find *free* *good* VR app.  have to use mSD card.  hard for someone w/ very limited use of arms and would have to mess around w/ that little tiny thing w/ messed up dexterity.
    pro's of ipad:  DURABLE, still unclear how long it'll last as far as upgrading iOS and available apps.  great OS and software/apps.  compatible in many ways w/ pc.  *better* features in all ways than tab pc.
    cons:  no idea if disability accessibility w/ VR installed or free app that is *free* and *good*.  price more than 2x as much as decent tablet pc.  warranty is crap.  i cannot afford it and it's only 1 yr and doesnt cover accidents.  have to buy more expensive compatible accessories like case/cover/kb.
    either way, i have to find help for purchase of either kind and accessories and prob good VR software/app.  at some point, i will be 100% quadriplegic and unable to communicate - that's an absolutey firm prognosis.  at this time i am 80% incapicated - meaning 80% of a 24hr period i am completely incapcitated.  i wanted to get VR set up on pc, but cannot sit, even in recliner, and look at monitor due to position of body and therefore having to turn head, hold weight of head on neck, and entire spine issues.  so i was going to set it up, as i thought i had no choice (which i wont have likely sooner than expected), and then i got laryngitis and had *no* voice at all for 35 - THIRTY FIVE!! - days!  been ~2+ mo now and it still goes out.  crazy!  advice:  if you lose your voice, SHUT UP or you'll never get it back.  i'm not kidding!
    so things arent working out well at all for awhile.  *shrugs*  such is life.
    this reply has taken me many trips (and hours) to the old laptop and i cannot hold my head up or use my arms anymore tonight.  so
    KING PENGUIN - i will have to read and reply to you tomorrow (USA).  sorry!
    thank you IIP!  tablet pc is back in my options.  that choice was just made a few hours ago when my "servant"  (lol, my bff, he's so sweet!) came by and went shopping for me so i could get some food!  yummy!  there are too many cons to tablet pc, but it appears, at this point, that it's going to be my only choice.
    k, my head's falling off!  i tell ppl i have a "dislocated head"  HAHA  and my mom thought i was serious.  :/
    THANK YOU!!!

  • Several questions - new to Creative Zen Touch - please help (ripping/accessori

    Hi, I just ordered my new Zen Touch 20gb online last night with a set of Sony earbuds (MDR-EX5LP). I'm pretty excited, get it this Friday.
    I just had a few questions in advance:
    A) Which programs are best for ripping, allow you to adjust the quality of the songs, and won't cause problems when burnt cds are ripped (saw a thread earlier that complained of bad quality when burnt cds were ripped to MP3 that worried me)?
    B) What different types of cables/accessories would you recommend for wiring the Creative up to a stereo? On CNet.com and various other sites, they talk about how the Creative sounds great through speakers, and I'm really excited to hook that up, but I don't know A) Which cable to buy that will work well with the Creative/have good sound quality, B) Where to plug it in - headphone jack? (no analog Line Out, right?)
    C) Has anyone had any experience with the remote? Is it pretty durable? I'm not going to plop down 50 plus shipping and handling, wait 2-3 weeks for the backorder, only to have it fall to bits in a few weeks.
    Thanks SO much! I appreciate any and all help. I'm new to Creative/Mp3 players as a whole, so forgive any ignorance/mistakes.

    I have used WMP0 exclusi'vely for ripping CDs. I rip WMAs at 28kbps, though you may want to go up to 92kbps if you can hear the difference (some people recommed ripping a song at both and deciding which is best). I sync all my CDs with WMP0 too, and have had no issues. One thing to caution you is to make sure your ID3 tags are correct before you sync up. What I mean by this is to make sure the album name, track titles, and artist names are to your liking. 90% it is not an issue, but sometimes, the titles have extra characters you may not wish to have. If you have more than one artist listed on a track, only the first one is loaded. So if you have, say: "EmmyLou Harris; Buddy Miller", the track is stored under artist Emmylou Harris only.</LI>
    Belkin sells this Dell DJ base that the ZT will fit into (there is another thread on that here). That seems like a nice option. You do go out of your headphone jack. Any chord that has the headphone jack on one end, and stereo RCA (red, white) jacks on the other end will do.</LI>
    See other threads about the FM remote. I read some concerns about their durability, but read for yourself and decide.</LI>
