During boot process windows screen appears and then all goes blank

Sometimes when i switch on my laptop it displays the windows screen and then all goes blank. the hard drive light also stops flickering.
I have to switch on again. this can happen 2-3 times and then the laptop will start normally. No scan disk or error messages are displayed.
Also, even after i have logged on the screen goes blank and the system stops working altogether. i have to manually switch off and on again. Again, no scan disk or error message is displayed. i have run Toshiba diagnostics and all seems to be functioning well according to it.

Hi dude
Firstly it would be very nice to know what notebook model you have. Such info is mostly appreciated.
My first thought was a hardware malfunction. Maybe a something wrong with HDD. But in my opinion you should firstly check if the same would happen after OS recovery.
Try to recover the notebook with the delivered Toshiba recovery CD and check the notebook functionality after this procedure.
See you later ;)

I have two yahoo accounts and I know as they 'improved' their servers I had periodic outages. It'd work fine on my webmail on  my computer, webmail on the iPad, but not via the mail app. And it was stuff on their end. It may be a case of wait and see and you may need to eventually remove/readd the account on your iPhone.
When the issue is on their end, unfortunately there's not much for users to do beyond wait it out or find work arounds.

  • I downloaded 21 Jump Street for a road trip the other day, and it won't play. I click play and a black screen appears and then it says "could not load movie." I have tried rebooting it, and it won't load. Please help.

I can't figure out how to get this movie to play - I have another movie downloaded and I had no problems. Any tips?

Thanks for this mha007 - I can now open FF with a new profile. Can I copy my settings from the old profile or will this bring over the same problem, maybe a corrupt file. If it would bring the same problem, is there any way I can check which file is corrupt, apart from taking them over one by one?

  • Blinking horizontal cursor after BIOS screen during boot process

I have a brand new FM2-A75MA-E35 motherboard and installed it without issue. I am currently experiencing a problem where when I turn on the computer, the MSI BIOS screen appears and then goes to a horizontal blinking cursor in the top left of the screen.
The problem occurred after the following happened: while the computer was running, I opened the case to check the CPU fan - a (unknown) wire shifted, touched something on the motherboard (corner of the motherboard near the memory) and the computer shut off a few moments later. There are no beeps, no error information when booting the computer. I can access the BIOS settings, change settings, navigate through the menus, the BIOS recognizes the SATA hard drive and Blu-Ray player connected to the motherboard, USB devices connected, etc. The BIOS screen does not display the temperature for the CPU or Mainboard System.
I'm unsure what to do next to tell if the board is damaged or I can get this back to a working state.

  • MacBook Pro won't boot. Grey Screen appears, apple logo then nothing

I'm very frustrated. I was using my laptop and suddenly the rainbow wheel appears and it freezes. I tried to hard reboot it and when it restarted a grey screen appears and the apple logo shows up. I bought it used from a Micro Center and I believe it's out of warranty. What is going on and what are my options?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 3
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 4
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 7
Repeat Step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 8
This step applies only to older Macs (not current models) that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery. Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a boot failure. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. If you can't get to an Apple Store, go to another authorized service provider.

  • 15" i7 Macbook Pro from early 2011.takes the mac laptop two or three tries to boot successfully. It would turn on, show gray screen, shut down, turn on again, show gray screen, shutdown, and then turn on, show gray screen, before it can finally get

    Hello All,
I have a 15" i7 Macbook Pro from early 2011. The past few weeks, it has been getting increasingly difficult to get on my computer. It takes the mac laptop two or three tries to boot successfully. It would turn on, show gray screen, shut down, turn on again, show gray screen, shutdown, and then turn on, show gray screen, before it can finally get to the dark gray log-in screen. Even when I finally get logged in to start working, thinking it would be okay now, it shuts down randomly.
I've ruled out the possibility of a software problem because I've just done a clean re-install of Mac OS X Mavericks on my computer just yesterday.
I did upgrade the RAM recently, about a month and a half ago, from 4GB to 16GB, I went to the apple store four days after that upgrade to have them do a hardware test, and clean the inside of my laptop, which helped with previous heat issues. When they did the hardware test, the hardware was all registered as fine from their system.
I've tried resetting the SMC, PRAM, and doing the internet recovery hardware test, but to no avail. I thought I could at least find out what parts needed to be replaced from the hardware test but it seems that when the hardware test is almost finished, the computer just shuts down, So I am unable to see the results.
My computer is also having battery issues, under battery condition, it says "replace now," parts have been ordered, waiting for arrival. But if the battery health is low, it should still boot up fine, it would just hold a significantly less charge.
Could this be a hard drive issue?
Has anyone had similar symptoms and how was it resolved?
Does anyone know what I can do to alleviate this issue?
I haven't had time to take it to Apple because I'm currently taking a 21 credit semester academically. I'm an art and design student so my computer is basically the bane of my existence. Help! Any constructive advice is welcomed!
Thank you so much for your input!

  • How do i fix my ipod touch 4th gen when the apple logo appears and then a whit screen comes up and turns off and it wont charge and it wont connect to itunes

My ipod touch 4th gen is a having a few problems with charging and turning on, my ipod comes up with the  extremely low on power symbol and then i put it into my computer and it comes up with the charging symbol then it goes to the apple logo and then onto a blank white screen and then turns off and repeats that process i have tried various things including resetting my ipod trying to connect it to itunes but it doesnt come up with anything so i cant reset it on itunes and have tried various charging devices.

Tried it but it won't do anything all it does is make the screen do a very small flash of white and then continues doing the same thing appearing with apple logo then the white screen and off and keeps repeating that
I'm guessing the white small flash means it's been reset when I hold the 2 buttons down,
    Thanks for suggesting.

I tried to install yosemite yesterday and my computer goes through the whole installation process and then to a blank white screen.  I've rebooted, I've reinstalled several times and get the same result.  Two days wasted and I can't use my computer!!

I don't know if you've already resolved your problem, but I had the same thing, it took me 6 hours to fix it. I had the exact same as you, installed the update and then it went to a white screen. After trying start up holding down cmmd r or holding down the alt key to try to install it again, nothing worked, same result every time. Then an angel came to me here somewhere but I can't find it now to thank him. Start in safe mode, press shift once you hear the start up chime and hold it down until you hear it again. Installation completion box came up and it was working. turn off computer and start up again normally and all is well. Except my final cut pro x doesn't work with it, have to update that now too. same as when I updated to mavericks.
    Hope this helps.

I opened the task manager and noted that the process "firefox.exe" appears and desappear after 5 seconds. I tried to start mozilla in safe mode but the problem remains. The only way to use mozilla in my computer is restarting the windows in safe-mode. Last thing: i already tried to reinstall the program. Please help me!

    What kind of noise?
The only things I can think of that make noise are fans and disks. Fans usually will not cause the computer to shutdown as you describe. My guess is your disk drive died. I hope you made a backup prior to start the ungrade.
