During Upgrade - Keep Personal Files Only? or Nothing?

The help file for Windows 8 Setup says the keep personal files only will keep files under
\\user\ folder what will happen to folders in the root folder of C:\?.
Personal files.
Anything saved in the User folder is considered a personal file, like the Documents and Desktop folders.
What does it do with the other folders? (Leave, Delete or move to windows.old?)
If nothing is your choose does this move Root drive files to windows.old?
Nothing.
Delete everything and replace your current version with a copy of Windows 8. Your personal files will be moved to a windows.old folder.
What does it do with the other folders? (Leave, Delete or move to windows.old?)

  • Upgrade from Windows 7 pro to windows 8.1 pro I only get keep personal files only or nothing, I want to keep apps too

when trying to upgrade from windows 7 SP1 to 8.1 pro from the DVD while being in windows I only get an option to keep personal files only or keep nothing.
what do I have to do so I can do a upgrade and keep all the programs too ?
    thanks!
    Brandon Dillon

I think there might be a way that when you install win 8.1 on a system with existing windows it will copy the user profile to a spare partition and then format the C and the then install windows 8
If you do a rebuild on a Win 7 or Win 8 PC from a recovery partition, the software as standard now on the rebuild gives you the options of keeping your Data, even though it will wipe and reinstall everything as per factory settings.
So this is normal and to be expected.
To be honest I wouldn't even do this... I'd backup everything, install Win 8.1 from complete scratch, not keeping any data and then restore data as I needed it. I am apprehensive about it thinking it knows where all my data might be.... especially with how
some programs like to store stuff.
Of course this means everything to install again, but latest versions always good, a clean install

  • In my setup keep personal files can't appear......

in my windows 8setup keep personal files can't appear only appear nothing what can i do???.........

    Hi,
Could you give us more information for analysis?
When installing Windows 8.1, the option to keep “Windows settings, personal files and apps” requires that the Windows 8 system matches the system default UI language. In addition, The Windows 8 edition can only be upgraded to an equivalent or higher Windows
8.1 edition.  If the option to keep “Windows settings, personal files, and apps” does not appear on the “Choose what to keep” page in Windows setup, please check to make sure that  that you are installing the same language, and  that you are
using the ISO and product key that matches your currently installed Windows 8 edition.

  • Windows 8.1 installation Keep personal files option - does it delete files in drives other than c

i am installing windows 8.1 . I am not getting an option to select custom installation. Does this delete files in my drives other than C?
I want to install windows in c drive and want to keep the files in my D and E drives. What to do?

    Hi,
No matter which method do you use, it would not affect your D and E drive if you don't format them during your installation.
Which version of Windows was running on your computer now? "Upgrade" option is only available when a supported version of Windows is already running on the computer.
Please refer to the following table to check if you could keep some file:

  • Keeping some files ONLY on the external drive

I'm ashamed to say this, but I've never used a back-up utility before.
But I just bought my first HUGE external drive, a WD 2TB My Book Essential, so I'm ready to start being a responsible computer user.
But I want to keep my Pictures & Movies on the external drive ONLY.
So, if I run Time Machine, and then clear the pics & flicks off my internal drive, is that gonna cause problems with subsequent back-ups?
Please forgive me if it's a stupid question. Thanks in advance.

Yes, at least 600 GBs. It's because TM adds new data to the backup each hour it backs up. Over time the backup uses more and more disk space. As the drive fills up TM prunes away files you may have deleted from the internal drive to allow space for new backups. See,
About TM "Backup Drive is Full" Alert
TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.
By making the backup drive large enough you should be able to avoid the disk full problem. Trial and error has shown that making it at least twice the capacity of the internal drive allows for adequate space over time, although eventually you may find that you will run out of space anyway. You can minimize the problem by not backing up system files (this is a TM option,) virtualization software pseudo-drives, Microsoft User Data folder, other connected drives or volumes, for example, help to avoid excessive and unnecessary backup data.
For more information see User Tips for Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine.

  • Keep old files only on Time Machine, delete off main computer

How can I delete my backed up files which are currently in the "Time Machine" off my computer? I don't need them on the computer, only in Time Machine.
To be clearer, Im worried if I delete them off the computer, Time Machine will also delete them..and I need to keep them.
If this is not possible then I will no longer use Time Machine, but instead manually back up my files.
    Thanks in advance!!

That's correct: if you delete a file from your HD, Time Machine will eventually delete it's copy. It is not intended for long-term, archival storage.
If you think about it, it's actually been doing that for as long as you've run TM: it only keeps it's hourly backups for 24 hours, then deletes them, except for the first of the day, which becomes a daily backup. Those are kept for a month, then deleted, except one per week, which is kept as long as there's room.
If this is not possible then I will no longer use Time Machine, but instead manually back up my files.
That's an option, of course, but you'll lose the advantages of TM.
You might separately archive those files, to CDs, DVDs, another partition on your TM drive, or a separate drive, or via MobileMe's Backup app to iDisk, or something like Mozy to their server.
You could use one of the "clone" apps, such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to archive them to another disk or partition automatically. They're mostly used for bootable clones (identical copies of your HD), but can also be used to backup selected folders, with an option to archive changed or deleted versions. CCC is donationware, SD has a free version, but I think to do the archives you need the paid version at about $30. There are others, as well.

  • Bridge CS5 applies wrong white balance during thumbnail extraction (raw files only)

    Hello to all Adobe Wizards,
Hobbiest photographer here. I use a Canon T2i and I have been shooting raw with auto white balance.
After I upload the CR2 files to Bridge, Bridge begins thumbnail extraction. This is when the problem begins: I watch Bridge extracting thumbnail photo after photo, turning them into wrong white balance one by one. After Bridge is done, I open one of these photos in Camera Raw, it shows the photo in "custom white balance". I was able to change it back to "As Shot". But every photo in Bridge now has custom white balance and is difficult to view in Bridge. This screenshot shows what my Bridge looks like after thumbnail extraction....
Yesterday, just out of curiosity, I took some photos with different white balance settings on the camera. I uploaded them to Bridge and Bridge over-wrote all the white balance settings. I then imported the same photos (from the same files) to iPhoto, they show up with correct write balance. Please see the second screenshot.
The third screenshot shows a unedited photo I opened from Bridge to Camera Raw, and the same photo as it appears in iPhoto, both unedited.
Again, this only happens to CR2 files. All tif, jpeg files are fine.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    -Wolfie

    Any ideas?
First of all, shooting Raw has the benefit of changing the color temperature (Whit Balance) to what ever you like from whatever you shot in camera.
To me it seems you once have saved a custom white balance as default setting and this is been applied to every new file because you told Bridge to do so. The easiest way to get out of this is open a raw file in ACR and in the basic tab at the right side you see a small icon for sub menu (next to the word basic). Click on it and from the row choose 'Reset Camera Raw defaults' at the bottom.
Also decide whether you want to stay in 16 bit mode (as you are now as shown in the blue line under the preview). If you want to chance it back to 8 bit just click on that blue line and choose your options from that menu. You only have to do this once for the files from that same camera, ACR remembers the settings for you.
Using 16 bit mode has advantages when using critical color corrections (but then you also should change the color mode to ProPhoto in my opinion). The disadvantage is that 16 bit doubles the file size compared to 8 bit
Having set the ACR defaults should effect your thumbs immediately by building new thumbs and previews but if not you must choose purge cache for folder from the menu tools / cache/ purge cache for folder. Now the new settings will be applied.
It may take some time so let Bridge do its work properly before starting other jobs in Bridge (see the activity bar bottom left to check if Bridge is still caching).

  • Windows 8.1 to 8.1 enterprise upgrade; How to keep Keep Windows settings, personal files, and applications?

    Hi,
I am doing an upgrade for a customer from windows 8.1 to 8.1 enterprise via ISO,
according to Microsoft TMB, you can save settings, personal files, and applications doing the upgrade, see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj203353.aspx#EightOne
However, when I am trying to upgrade from 8.1 (same language, same architecture),
    I only get two options:
    1. Keep personal files.
    2. Nothing.
    (see screenshot).
Why is that? what am I doing wrong?

  • What is the best way to keep my personal files stored in iCloud separate from my work-related files?

What is the best way to keep my personal files stored in iCloud separate from my work-related files? It seems that I'm not allowed to link my iPad mini and my work iMac using two different accounts, so I'm wondering how to make my single personal account work for both, while keeping personal vs work files reasonably separated.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Is it possible for you to upgrade your account to iCloud Drive? That would mean, all Macs upgraded to Yosemite, and all mobile devices to iOS8?
See:  iCloud Drive FAQ and iCloud: About using iWork for iOS and iCloud
In iCloud Drive you could create two separate custom folders, one for work documents and one for private documents and organize your documents there.  Don't use the app specific folders (Keynote, Pages, Numbers, ...) , because you can only create one level of folders inside these folders.

The main error in this position is thinking ANY sized SSD can be "storage"
Any Macbook SSD should be idealized as a working platform computer system, containing all your applications, documents, and weekly-use necessary files; and all media files such as ‘big-data’ (music/PDF collections/video/pictures), unless directly needed in the near future, should be kept off the computer and on external storage USB or likewise bare hard drives.
You cant do what you want without removing the internal SSD
Officially, it is not possible for an end user to upgrade the storage in any Retina Display MacBook Pro model after purchase

  • How do I reinstall Yosemite while keeping my personal files & settings?

    Hi,
I am running Yosemite (10.10.2) on my 2013 Macbook Air and its in need of some love. Most notably, my Notes app has broken (it crashes on every attempt to open it) and my bluetooth has gone haywire (device detection and personal hotspot works when they feel like it), my display will randomly go black and is becoming an increasingly mysterious and lengthy process to get it back (normally just mashing keys and opening and closing the lid several times over). Thats just the half of it.
I want to say the mass majority of these issues began after signing myself up to receive all these alpha, beta, omega, apple tree pre-seed, under-cooked releases or whatever apple pushes down the pipeline. Needless to say, I feel its time to reinstall my OS though I am quickly discovering that this whole process was significantly easier in a Windows environment which seems really counter-intuitive considering well, this is Apple and things are just supposed to work like magical butter.
So I ended up reinstalling Yosemite through the Recovery Utility (CMD+R). It downloaded from the internet and installed. My personal files were kept intact but it didn't fix my Notes app as it still kept quitting unexpectedly when trying to launch it. So I opted to perform a clean install. I quickly realized this was a TERRIBLE idea as I was unable to recover important settings like my keychain passwords, my email accounts and so forth. Thankfully I made a time machine backup before attempting any of this so I am right back where I started (sort of).
    I need some help please.
My goal is to perform a clean install of Yosemite to rid myself of these OS oddities meanwhile keeping everything important. This includes, most notably:
my personal document, photo and music files
    my iTunes library
my iPhoto library (and more importantly, the settings, albums tags, image edits etc etc) that I've made over the years
    my keychain passwords
my email accounts (it took me almost an hour to setup and properly configure all 9 of my email accounts and i don't want to go through that again)
my calendar and events within it
Other settings I would like to keep, but am willing to sacrifice are:
    my iMessage history
    my applications
my user experience settings; things like the dock size and behaviour, track pad scroll speed etc etc etc. I'm on the fence with this one since I've plugged in so much sudo code into terminal trying to accomplish things in the past, that I fear theres some settings that shouldn't be restored.
So Apple community, what say thee; what is my best course of action?
    Thank you,
    -Brendon

Oh boy... throughout all of this i think I've really done a number. In trying to execute the instructions in the link you provided, I receive this error while trying to access my internet accounts panel under system preferences:
    "Preferences Error
Could not load Internet Accounts preference pane."
    What have I done lol...

  • Backing up personal files to Time capsule and then upgrading to Leopard

    Hi.
I recently bought the upgrade disks to Leopard from 10.4.11.
    i also bought Time capsule.
I was advised in the store to save all my personal files (photos, I tunes library, work) to time capsule, then perform a clean upgrade to Leopard, the replace all my personal files to my iMac, then doing the complete system back up to the time capsule.
I have managed to get the iMac talking to Timecapsule, I can print so this is all cool, but how do I save all my personal data to the timecapsule? I'm sorry if this is too daft a question, but I have tried seeing if there was an intuitive way of learning this on the Mac but as these files are so important, I really don't want to make a mistake that would lead to me losing everything.
    Many thanks in advance.
    M.

in the Finder use the Go command (top file menu) and in the window type afp://10.0.1.1 or whatever your TC ip address is, then you should be able to access that hard drive. you should use Airport Utility to assign a password to your TC hard drive.

  • File overwritten by upgrade tool EHPI during upgrade configuration step

    Hello,
During upgrade using EHPI the upgrade pauses with an error  that says to replace R3trans with a newer version into the EHPI/abap/exenew directory. After copying the file and continuing with the upgrade it pauses again with the same error.
I see in the log that after continuing that the upgrade kernel file is unpacked again and thus overwites the new R3trans file with an older version.
My solution has been to restart the upgrade and simultaneously copy the file multiple times with the cp command so that a new R3trans is in exenew directory after the extraction and before the check.
I know similar errors have occurrd in previous upgrades, migrations etc.
    Regards,
    Robert

You could always copy the new files over to exenew ahead of time  right at the start of the upgrade.
exenew is not looked at until the new exes are copied
