I've currently got PSE 3.0, going to upgrade to PSE 6.0, but also looking for even better Dust and Scratch Removal than PSE 6.
Any suggestions ?

Yes, "Dust and Scratches" does work on PSE5. I've used this filter on the two pictures at: http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/cooper213/dustscratch.jpg
On the left is the original of a scan of a 40s snapshot. On the right is that image with one pass of the Dust and Scratches filter.
You can't just apply D&S without some experimenting with the Radius and Threshold. The higher the R & T, the more the noise is removed, but the more the image is blurred. I used a very low figure for both Radius and Threshold. I would not stop here with the editing process.
I'd use the Healing Brush tool to remove some of the remaining noise on the black coat. I'd do some sharpening, and possibly sharpen only the figures by creating a Selection so the clapboards on the house don't start to look wonky.

Abort/Exit 3rd party program

Hi!
I've developed a test system that flashes a device via a 3rd party flasher (hardware and software).
Sometimes the 3rd party program freezes or crashes for an unknown reason, can be hardware or software.
I communicate with the 3rd party program in a separate loop and uses the System Exec.vi to call the 3rd party program via its Command Prompt tool.
I am pretty sure, without actually having tested, that the rest of my application is responsive and running.
Question:
I could implement a timer function that after X milliseconds says "Hey! You havn't completed the flash sequence in the time I gave you, ABORT!'.
But... is there some way to kill that 3rd party program automatically when a timer indicates a problem? Without the user having to open the Task Manager and end the process manually.
Or maybe another way to solve the problem.

Funny story: I was working along side another developer that was having a simillar issue. Out of the blue the 3rd party flash programmer would just hang up. This is not desired in high volume automated production test systems. After a few days of banging on the problem they asked me for ideas. I immediately whent to the manufactures web-site saw they had a FAQ section and that FAQ#2 was "Is the xxx Device suitable for automated high volume systems?"
BINGO! one more mouse click and I found the answer. "No, this is not an anticipated use case for xxx device. Every once in a while the device becomes unresponsive requiring a system reboot to restore proper operation."
This is what I call "Other people funny" its only funny when it does not happen to you.

Removing dust and scratches?

I just had some of my parents' old home movies digitized (homemoviedepot.com) to Digital8 format, and as I write this I'm importing them into iMovie. Eventually they'll have a soundtrack applied and it'll move into iDVD.
However, since some of these movies are more than 45 years old there's a fair amount of dust and scratches and such from them. Home Movie Depot did a fantastic job at converting them to digital format (far better than the old VHS transfer that my sister had done ~12 years ago) but there's still room for improvement -- not only with the dust and scratches but also with color restoration.
What's the fastest/best/easiest way to clean this up? Is there a "De-Age Film" iMovie plugin somewhere that'll get me started?

Yes, all the time. But the rules regarding a still are quite different from the rules regarding video.

By comparing median values of the previous and following frames. Mathematically speaking, it's actually pretty darned easy to figure out if there's dust in a video frame or not. All you have to do is compare color and texture values from one or more preceeding and proceeding frames. If there's "blue" in a given range of ten frames, then there's "black" in a frame, then "blue" in the next ten frames, odds are that "black" section is dust. Have the computer interpolite the color and texture values for that region based on the frames immediately before and after it.

This is just a matter of opinion. IMO, removing excessive dust and debris from the frame is not robbing the film of its age. I'm not colorizing a b&w film; I'm restoring the color that was lost to age.
I mean, you could go even further back with that argument. Doesn't converting the film to a "sterile" DVD and watching it on a TV screen rob the film of its "old-time charm" of setting up a projector and video screen?
IMO, this is exactly the sort of thing that iMovie was made to do.

Upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro Update 1 and it killed all my 3rd party drivers

Hoping someone can help - my PC upgraded Windows 8.1 Pro (fresh install a few months ago) with the 'Update 1 patch' which was made available a few days ago. It was done via Windows Update - I let it do its thing for about 15 minutes, restart etc.
Once the machine restarted, I noticed the following:
- no network connection
- no sound
- no working camera
I went to the device manager and see a stack of 3rd-party devices with exclamation marks, all stating code 28 (the drivers for this device are not installed). I go to each device and try to update the drivers - it looks like its going to work and then
gives the error "The system cannot find the file specified".
I do some googling and find the setupapi.dev.log. The log for every device with a problem reads like this:

It seems like 'update 1' as crapped all over my driver store.
What can I do to fix this - I have tried a raft of things such as pnputil commands to add the driver INFs manually (they fail saying 'element not found'), but still I am stuck without sound, network and camera.
This will be the last time I let Microsoft update automatically install - it will now be 100% manual, and done after a few weeks to ensure there aren't bugs.

Problem using Dust and Scratches filter in Photoshop CS6

Using the 64-bit extended CS6 version under Win 8/64. Am I not using the filter correctly, or is this a limitation regarding its use?
I duplicate a layer and apply the filter. I then add a white mask and invert it to get black. I change the layer blending mode to either darken or lighten, depending on the requirements at hand. I use the paint brush to remove the spotting and it works. However, if I add a new layer and then go back to the Dust and Scratches layer, the paint brush further modify the layer. I need to create a new layer and start all over again.
I am finding that if I convert the layer for smart filter use, I cannot use the paint brush. The layer needs to be rasterized, again.

I am painting with a white brush - onto a black mask. The purpose is to only apply the Dust and Scratches filter to specific areas.
The brushing will apply the filtered effects when I create the layer, apply the filter, and apply the black mask. The brushing no longer works if I create a new layer and then return to the layer with the Dust and Scratches filter. The problem is similar, I think, to if one were applying an effect with the history brush, close the file, and reopen it. The history brush won't be helpful because the history is lost.. In this case of applying the filter to a layer with a mask, the history brush isn't used and I would have guessed that the layer would allow re-use of the filter and brush.

Dust and Scratches filter stopped working

beginning yesterday, when I select an area of a photo and attempt to use the 'dust and scratches' filter, Elements 11 jumps to the 'Hand Tool' and locks up. This is on a Windows 8 machine. Any ideas?

This problem is on my laptop running Vista ( Business) on Adobe 10.0 , for many years I did NOT have a problem with this . No forum Pages on this.
Also i would like to know how screen readers can better interact with PDF as my wife has difficultys on some email attachments on her laptop , again there seems no easy avenue for someone in her situation surfing websites and forums for Hours maybe ok ok for sighted people, but not if you are blind & use a screenreader. No Support Help from Adobe is available.

Handling dust and scratches in Aperture

Hi all,
I have been looking for some kind of tool within Aperture that might be able to help dealing with dust and scratches on scanned film.
For dust spots, the spot and patch tool seems to help, but for scratches and other fine blemishes that take the form of lines instead of circles, the spot and patch tool does not seem to be able to handle it.
Another thing that doesn't seem to be supported is the case where two blemishes are very close together.
Is there another tool inside Aperture that I should be using?
A round trip to photoshop unfortunately blows away any advantage you get by using the raw workflow.
Is there something obvious that I am missing?

No -- Aperture's spot and patch tools work on round things. You can't clone a big long scratch out of something like you can with Photoshop in using the clone tool.
No real way around that -- Aperture is a photo editor not a pixel editor (they're quite different things under the hood). You'll need to round trip to Photoshop for these kinds of things (hence the 4x or 5x file size increase you get... from using a pixel editor . I wouldn't say this "blows away" all of Aperture's advantages, but yes if you're retouching a few hundred old scratched photos it will be a pain. But Aperture's core strength is in workflow for shooting with a digital camera and sorting, keywording, and doing light to medium editing. It's not going to compete with Photoshop for heavy retouch work or stuff often started from scanning negatives.

PSE10 Dust and Scratch filter eliminates the correction achieved when I click OK

PSE10 using Windows 7 64bit system. When I use the Dust and Scratch filter, I can see the improvement in the photo (or the inset) , but when I click OK, it goes back to the way it was. This happens whether I use "Preview" or not. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Quit the editor, then restart it from the button in the organizer or welcome screen, or by double clicking the actual .exe file. However you do it, hold down ctrl+shift+alt as you start it. Keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

Running a 3rd Party Program

All,
I want to be able to launch and run a 3rd party program via LabView.
Launching the program via "System Exe.vi" is simple enough.
But now I want to programatically make all the button pushes. So instead of the user having to navigate the 3rd Party GUI, it would be done via Labview.
It sounds like I would need a dll and know the entry points but if I only had the exe is it still possible?

I did look at the plug-in page quickly. I noticed the free ones and the pay ones.
From using producing programs, some photo editing and some video editing programs: I'd rather use what is there and what is inside first. Then look at the extras. I am realizing how deep this can get. But if I bought PS or CS 5 or whatever: I would want to learn.
I know that some plug-ins, extras, etc are their own and are highly useful. I do understand that it can take longer but in some programs you can do what a plug-in can do though it may require more steps. I'd rather learn the program and then get the short-cuts. But again some are stand alone and highly uselful - these are what I am looking for and want to know about.
I didn't know there were so many books though, this is new information. I believe that I was told a while ago about a couple or that one comes out with a new release. I like to read and know the who, what, when, where, why and how: but most of my time should be in the program. Eg: I read my photo editing programs manuals. That was important and helped me. I need to know terms, language, some short-cuts/how-to, etc. But getting in there is way more important.
Any more information is great. Please keep it comming. I am not getting the program in the immediate future, it's the pricing issue right now and that it's way more important for me to use what I have as I am still learning big time. Plus I have to get on my camera a lot more and draw a bit more.

Automator - Loop through a text file and process data through a 3rd party software

Just stumbled on Automator the other day (I am a mac n00b) and would like to automate the processing of a text file, line-by-line, using a third party tool. I would like Automator to loop through the text file one line at a time, copy the string and keep as a variable. Next, place the variable data (copied string) into the text field of the 3rd party software for processing. Once the processing is complete, I would like Automator to fetch the next line/string for processing. I see items like "copy from clipboard" and "variables" within the menu but I am not finding much documentation on how to utilizle this tool. Just hear how potentially powerful it is.
The 3rd party software is not a brand name, just something made for me to process text. I may have to use mouse clicks or tabs + [return] to navigate with Automator. A term I heard on Bn Walldie's itunes video series was "scriptable software" for which I don't think this 3rd party app would be.

Good news and bad news...
The good news is that it should be entirely possible to automate your workflow.
The bad news is that it will be a nightmare to implement via Automator, if it's even possible.
Automator is, essentially a pretty interface on top of AppleScript/Apple Events, and with the pretty interface comes a certain stranglehold on features. Knowing how to boil rice might make you a cook, but understanding flavor profiles and ingredient combinations can make you a chef, and it's the same with AppleScript and Automator. Automator's good at getting you from points A to B but if there are any bumps in the road (e.g. the application you're using isn't scriptable) then it falls apart.
What I'm getting at is that your requirements are pretty simple to implement in AppleScript because you can get 'under the hood' and do exactly what you want, as opposed to Automator's restricted interface.
The tricky part is that if no one else can see this app it's going to be hard to tell you what to do.
I can give you the basics on reading a file and iterating through the lines of text in it, and I can show you how to 'type' text in any given application, but it may be up to you to put the pieces together.
Here's one way of reading a file and working through each line of text:
-- ask the user for a file:
set theFile to (choose file)
-- read the file contents:
set theFileContents to (read file theFile)
-- break out the lines/paragraphs of text:
set theLines to paragraphs of theFileContents
-- now iterate through those lines, one by one:
repeat with eachLine in theLines

Once you have a line of text (eachLine in the above example) you can 'type' that into another application via something like:

keystroke eachLine
end tell
end tell
Here the AppleScript is activating the application and using System Events to emulate typing the contents of the eachLine variable into the process. Put this inside your repeat loop and you're almost there.
