Dust behind glass

I've noticed I have a nice little collection of white specks under my glass screen. Have others had this problem?
Can I use canned air to remove it?
Or should I just head into the apple store?

You can do forum search and find that others have indeed asked this very same question.
I don't remember seeing a fix, other than making an appointment at the Genius Bar to ask for replacement.

  • Macbook Pro 13 (mid-2009) dust behind glass

    Hi there,
I bought my MBP 13 just 2 weeks ago and while cleaning the glass panel today I discovered dust behind the glass. So there is dust between glass and LCD.
Is this normal? Should I be worried? Should I return my MBP? I mean if it is a common problem I might keep it...
    Best wishes.

No I did not personally upgrade the componments. I bought the standard 2.26 13" model with the extra ram and HD space, as a student I got it at a fair price. So it was already assembled when it got to me.

  • Keeping Thunderbolt Display Free of Smudges/Dust Behind Glass

    Hello,
My brother has an iMac and he's told me about an issue with air quality and the accumulation of dust/smudges behind the screen glass. From reading the manual that came with my Thunderbolt display I understand that this can be an issue for it as well.
I am in the city, in a high air pollution area. There is a lot of dust. I'd like to prevent this issue before it becomes a problem. Keeping the area surounding the display dust free is obvious but I'm still worried about it. I did not buy this display so it could have smudges behind glass in 2 years.
I think an air filter would be best. Something that is low profile. Anyone know of such a product or has something like this in place?

    Hi Clinton,
Thanks for the idea. I have been researching airfilters.. notably smaller desktop airfilters. I read on one of the other forums that the display issue concerns microscopic dust so I'm going to go for a HEPA type air filter, the types people with allergies use.
Incidentally I found one that runs off a the mac USB connector (not that it was on my wish list) but its small and doesn't look bad either. My only reservation is it is sold by a company I'm not familiar with. I can't find the manufacturer and so getting replacement filters down the road may be an issue.

  • Early 2011 MBP 17' - Dust behind glass

    Hey all,
I am normally OCD when keeping my electronics clean, and my MBP is no exception. That's why this is driving me NUTS! I was using my MBP to study at the library as per usual, and when I come home and turn it on, theres a splotch of dust or something that is behind the glass on the screen. It isn't directly on the LCD, as I can tell there is a degree of layering. It is on the opposite side of the glass, and is a total eye sore to look at.... I have no idea how this happened. Any chance Apple will help me on this? Or is there a DIY option that isn't too intrusive?

    Do a SMC reset:

    Run an Apple Hardware Test:

You may need to use OPTION D to start it.
Install iStat pro and open Activity Monitor.  Set Activity Monitor to show 'All Processes' and '%CPU' to display values from high to low.  Post images of the two such as these:

  • Dust behind glass panel

I have had Apple tech out 3 times to clean inside part of glass panel in 2 years. Somehow dust/smoke (we have wood stove for primary heat source) is getting sucked between the LCD and glass panel. I just got off the phone with Apple and they will NOT send tech out to clean it as before. I am under extended warranty so cannot do myself (even though I have watched tech removed glass panel with the suction cups) without getting into trouble with Apple over the warranty.
What do I do? I am professional photographer and need every bit of this 24 inch monitor to be CLEAN.
I am horribly upset at Apple for NOT fulfilling their end of the warranty.
Does anyone else STILL have this problem? Last time I looked here on the Mac forums, there were numerous posts and threads regarding this problem.
If you do have this problem, what do you do to correct it?

You can easily do that by yourself. The front glass is just held by magnets, I'd even consider it a servicable part since there are no screws and no warranty seals. Just pull it off, lay it face down on a towel or pillow, use a damp microfiber cloth and then finish with a dry one, put it back and eventually clean the outside. It's just a matter of five minutes.
And you are actually lucky ... others (like myself) had dirt get inside the LCD panel, which is a whole different league of difficulty to fix.

  • Dust behind screen on n96

my phone has been annoying me lately! the OS is fine, but there now seems to be a build up of dust behind my screen! its quite annoying in day light! im blowing my phone from all sides to see if it moves, but nothing, i sent it to the repairs center to get it sorted and to tighten my phone but they just sent it back with an update, ive emailed them to complain with no reply, so i guess i have to do it myself, the phone jus feels really loose when sliding or when its in the normal mode, is this common?
does any one have solutions to getting the dust removed?

It is thought that dust can get in via the ear piece.
May be get a CP-293 to slow the ingress down.

  • Some Dust behind the LCD

Hi, I seems to be having some dust behind my LCD. I cant clean it. But when I look at it from an angle, I cant see the dust, so I dont think is a dead pixel. Will apple help me clean it up? Or exchange for another screen? Its not like a lot of dust... just like 3 of them.... and its very irritating.
Do you guys think Apple will help me out?

My new MacBook Pro has the same issue... Fortunately it's pretty small (and off to the side), and since everything else is working well, I'm probably going to leave it alone for now...
This is indicative of some sloppy construction though...

  • Pearl has dust behind the screen

I dont know how it happened, but my pearl has dust behind the screen. Does anyone
know how to remove the screen so I can clean it.
    Thanks,
    Joe

Joe, If the phone is out of warrantee and/or do don't want to go through the enormous hassle of replacing your blackberry there is another alternative. I have done this several times myself but I would recommend that you be mechanically inclined. Although the surgery is very easy some blackberry models have retention clips that need to be pushed aside with a very smal screw driver like one you would buy for repairing sunglasses etc. I do not have a pearl so I am not much help giving you specifics about that particular phone..
Go to ebay and look for cellular phone repair tools. There are dozens of sellers, just look for a Torx kit. Inside the battery compartment you will find four torx screws that you will need to remove. Once they are removed the back of the phone pops off. Depending on your model the phones sometimes come apart in layers (like the 8700). So after the first layer you may need to remove more torx screws to get inside to the screen. Be careful when splitting the phone apart as small pieces will be loose inside like the volume and push to talk buttons. You will need to careful put these back in place when re-assembling the phone. Once the phone is split apart you should easily be able to clean the screen and the inside from dust. Just use an old tooth brush.
Although this whole procedure is not overly difficult for me, it is not for everyone. So please proceed with caution and under your own risk.
On another note this is the same procedure if your phone ever get water damage. I have a neighbor that thought it was hilarious to throw people into the pool during a drunkin haze (thankfully he stopped drinking...). Twice he did it to me with my phone still firmly attached to my waist. After doing a terrific impression of a Marlin trying to shake a fisherman's hook my phone still had water pouring from it and vibrating like crazy. I immediately took out the battery and took the phone completely apart. I then set all the parts EXCEPT THE LCD and the CLEAR PLASTIC WINDOW on a cookie sheet.  All you are trying to do is dry the electronics. Cell phones are all rated for fairly high temperatures  in case you were to leave it in the car on a hot summer afternoon. I then set the oven to preheat at 150 degrees. Once it was preheated I turned the oven off and let sit for a minute with the door cracked. Then I put the cookie sheet into the oven and closed the door. I let it sit until the oven had completely cooled down. Re-assembled the phone and presto it worked just fine until the next time he threw me in. If you want to be completely safe you can put the unassembled phone on your car dash which works as well. So long as there is little humidity and good amount of heat but not above 200 degrees.
    Good luck...

  • Dust behind screens.

I have dust behind screen for the second time, on both of my iMacs. First time it was just before expiration of warranty. Now, warranty is gone and I would need to pay several hundreds of EUR for replacement ? Any advise ?

If you still have the case numbers from your warranty, call Apple Customer Relations - 1-800-767-2275.  Ask politely & firmly that you want to be transferred to Customer Relations.  Tell them exactly what you stated in your post.  See what they can do for you.
    GOOD LUCK!
P.S.  Apple has a 90 day warranty on their repairs.  Are you pass that?

  • Dust behind screen - price if repaired?

Had my laptop for over 2 years. No applecare. Annoying dust behind screen. I have no Apple Stores near me, so unless you mail it to them I doubt I could have it fixed. But what would the cost be? Anyone know?

  • Dust behind display

I noticed a couple specs of dust behind the display. Any body else have this issue?

Yes, my 1st iPhone had a spec of dust right in the middle of the screen which bothered me when I was reading iBooks, etc.
My replacement also has a spec of dust, although VERY tiny and like 99% unnoticeable and it's at the very bottom edge of the phone. I'm keeping this one because I'm afraid of getting another one that has worst specs of dust.
Where are yours? Do they affect your every day use of the phone?

  • Dust behind display glass

My MacBookPro5,3 15" display has acquired dust speckles BEHIND the glass of the display. So is this common or normal?

I had to go through three 15" Macbook Pros before I got one that didn't have crap behind the screen. Good thing I brought it in before the 14 days, or else I'd be SOL (per Apple "Genius"). I'd bring it in ASAP before apple makes you keep it.
