Dust in the speaker holes

Has anyone else noticed a lot of dust in the speaker holes in the new macbook pros? I found an example on the internet to show what it looks like:
http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2008/10/2008-macbookpro-review-2.ars/3

If you live in a dusty environment then you will find your computer gets dusty, W M R.
If this occurs you will find cleaning it is helpful.
That isn't a new Mac that you linked to the picture of, by the way (more than a year old), rather than a "new macbook pro".
I see that it seems to be surrounded by food for some reason. An apparently open packet of crisps straddling the older Apple keyboard on side and a jar of pickles or somesuch on the other! Clearly the reviewer was a bit of a food freak. Perhaps what the picture depicts is the residue of some now eaten Turkish Delight or some sort of foodstuff coated with a sugary substance? Some sort of white powder, anyway!
You don't say whether you are suffering from this problem yourself, or whether you are just curious. Regardless, I think we can assume that the computer in the photo was in the possession of someone who was a tad careless when it came to the possibilities of contamination of one kind or another.
I should also add that, despite visiting this forum pretty much daily for quite some time I am not aware of a single other query about the issue of dusty speaker grills on MBPs! I think we can assume that it is not a serious issue for the majority of owners, and that the photo you have selected comes from an untidy atypical user who likes to chuck his or her food around a bit more than is desirable in close proximity to any computer!

  • IPhone 6+ speaker holes got plugged up

Believe it or not, my iPhone 6+ got pushed against an Oreo cookie, and the speaker holes got plugged with frosting. I used a damp Qtip to wipe the frosting off, then, as sound level was still low, very gently put a damp wood toothpick in each hole, which helped a bit. How can I get the rest out, and restore speaker volume, without harming the phone?

It seems to happen. Not too many days ago there was a similar question about removing custard. You could try putting a vacuum against the grill and see if you can suck the remaining material out. You might not get it all but enough. Or if you have an Apple store nearby you could take it there (or phone) and ask them what can be done.

  • Poking a few holes in the speaker

Can poking a few holes in the speaker to make it louder hurt the phone…I have seen on the discussion boards that is a remedy…

Short answer is yes, it can.
Long answer is that the speaker is a piece of foam that moves air to make sound. By poking the holes in it you give it the ability to flex more, thus move more air. However, this also adds to the instability of the speaker increasing the chances of it damaging itself during the flex. If you poke holes that are too large or are too frequent the speaker will literally tear itself apart during the flex.

  • Dust in the grill

When I have my MBP on my desk and I look at the machine at a certain angle, I see what appears to be dust in the grill. I'm not sure if this some sort of optical illusion if you will, the small grill holes with the light striking it just right.
Anyways has anyone noticed any dust accumulating in the tiny grill holes?
I posted a picture here but given that it was taken by my iPhone (so its not high res) and the detail is lost somewhat the picture really doesn't do it justice.
Any suggestions on clearing that stuff out, short of dismantling the computer of course.

    Hi Michael,
Just a thought here on this topic; perhaps I am way off-base totally.
It does look like (from your photo, and from photos of my machine that I have here) that perhaps the holes in the grille directly above the speaker itself are differently shaded than the rest of the holes. You can see that there is an oval within the grille that is darker colored, not appearing to have any (or less) dust in it. That's where I think the actual speaker is located within the grille.
Now, perhaps the cut of the holes in the grille is slightly different in that section where the speaker is than within the rest of the grille? Either that, or the sound vibrations from the speaker has dislodged the dust in those holes close to the speaker?
In any case, the amount of dust is not uniform in each hole within the grille. That leads me to believe that perhaps this is not actually dust, but a difference in the way the holes are cut in the area close to the speaker itself and in the rest of the grille? This difference would not be apparent from the exterior unless viewing the MBP on the low angle that the picture is taken from.
Does anyone understand what I'm trying to say here? ha ha I admit, I have not articulated it very well and my brain is mush from studying so I'm not sure I can improve it.

  • How to clean the dust inside the screen of the iPod Touch?

    Hi everybody,
lately some dust entered inside the screen of my iPod Touch.
At first it looked like one or two pixels were gone bad, but it is just some annoying dust.
The problem is that I cannot figure out any way to remove it.
I tried a gentle blow from the connector hole but the result was worse.
Any idea on how to clean the screen inside?
I hope it is not necessary to go to an Apple Center and pay for the "cleaning service".
    Regards,
    Andrea

    It sounds safe to use
'Falcon's® "Professional" Dust-Off® "XL" compressed-gas is the perfect product for removing dust from your color transparencies before making scans or copy slides; it's also great for removing dust from cameras, lenses, computers and other electronic equipment. Each 12 oz. disposable can comes with its own trigger value and a 4.75" nozzle extension (a red tube) that allows you to place precise bursts of compressed air just where you want it.'
Check the directions on the back... also check the contents. Normally anything like that will inform you of contaminants harmful to delicate electrical devices.
If its just compressed air make sure you keep the can well back from the source.. and unplug the G5 (take it somewhere you don't mind dust.. there no point doing this in situe, just for it to suck it back in again!)
Also.. as mentioned.. keep the can upright (as the air is decompressed the can gets very cold)

  • IPhone 5 left side of the speaker blew out

Just recently, my iPhone 5 speakers sounds a bit distorted or something. It sounds like only one side is playing and not the other. it sounds like the speaker was blown out. anyone know any solutions? nothing silly, i know iPhone 5 only has one speaker, but only one side of the speaker is working? the other side is not playing music at all. Does this Have to Do with Hardware or the Software? Please help!!

Does it play normally with headphones connected (can you hear both the left & right channels)? If so, try connecting/disconnecting the heaphones from the device a few times. Also try rotating the headphone plug back and forth a few times. Sometimes, dust/lint will get lodged in the headphone jack and prevent the contacts inside from working properly. When the headphones are removed from the jack, contacts inside the jack enable the speaker. This could be where the problem lies.

  • IPod plays music through the speaker on the back

    Hi,
My new iPod nano 5th generation seems to play music through the back speaker for the camera and voiceover options. When i plug in my headphones, it will play through those, as well as the speaker, but even when I unplug the headphones, it plays through it still. This is annoying to the people around me to hear. Does anyone know how to fix it, i've gone through the settings on my iPod but I can't seem to figure how to turn it off and only have the music play through my headphones. Anybody have the same problem? How do I fix it?
Thanks so much for your help.

Is the speaker really on the back? I had been trying to figure out where the sound was coming out, and thought I had narrowed it down to the hole where the earplugs plug in. I tend to lay my iPod down on its back, and it doesn't seem to muffle the sound.
Cutie962, I don't know about sound in general through non-iPod earphones, but in order to use the radio, you need the right earphones, because the antenna is in the cord. I can't use the delivered ones, because either I just don't know how to use them or my ears are the wrong shape - they just fall out immediately. I was trying to figure out which ones Apple sells also have the antenna for the radio, but they don't seem to list that information. I kind of like the pink ones that hook over the ear, but it would be a waste if they won't work.

  • Games, incoming calls, texts and reminders don't play through the speaker

Have had my 4 a week and it's been perfect until today because none of the above play through my speaker, therefore I can't hear incoming calls, texts or reminders - or play games without wearing earphones. But when on a call, I can switch to speaker and it works - I just can't hear it ring.
All other apps play perfectly through the speaker as well as earphones, iPod, you tube, radio stations, etc.
    Nothing's changed in the settings.
Have tried the usual; blowing into the jack hole and plugging/unplugging really quickly.
The fact that some things do play via the speaker tells me it mustn't be hardware related (and that the phone isn't confused about whether or not the earphones are plugged in).
Has anyone else had this? Is there a fix?
Am going to call CPW to at least notify them in case it has to be replaced. But if I was to do a factory reset, would I just have to sync everything back via iTunes and then set up my email etc?
Would a visit to an Apple bar be a good idea? Am based in SE England and both bars are 90 mins away.
    Thanks

  • Are the speaker plates used for ventilation?

    Hi everyone,
last year I had a disastrous experience with my MacBook Pro: I spilled coffee over the keyboard; my MBP was completely defective, so I had to replace it. I am now trying not to let anything fluid near my computer, but that is sometimes impossible. So I bought a keyboard cover and tightly hold it in place with adhesive tape.
But there are still the speaker plates. Is it possible to again use adhesive tape to cover them completely? Or would that interfere with the ventilation system of the MBP?
Are there other, potentially dangerous, "holes" through which a fluid could enter the MBP?
I would be grateful for any answer!
    Best wishes

How can that be when you have already destroyed one MBP with liquid.  This should be a lesson learned on your part.  I am astonished.
Unfortunately, I have to sit in front of my MBP the whole day. Then there arises the problem of drinking ... I avoid open beverages (like e.g. coffee) -- so, I have indeed learned a lesson! ;-) But it is sometimes really hard to also avoid closed (bottled) beverages.
I have been given the advice to use a laptop stand, to rise my MBP over sea level. ;-) Do you think that measure would at least reduce my problem?
In any case, thanks for your input!

My ipod 5th gen won't let me adjust volume when headphones are plugged in, but when they are not I can adjust the volume on the speaker.  How do I fix this?

Try a hard reset of the Nano. To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
I assume you have double checked to make sure you are plugging the headset all the way in meaning the white part of the headset is flush with the body of the Nano?
